A semi-official news agency in Iran, Tasnim news agency, said Thursday that Iranian authorities have arrested Elham Afkari, the sister of a wrestler who was executed in 2020. They also accused her of colluding with a foreign-based Persian-language television channel.

The reported arrest came amid nationwide mass protests over the death of Mahsa Amini allegedly in the custody of the morality police in Iran over not wearing her veil properly.

Afkari was reportedly arrested on Thursday. She has been formally charged with communicating with and transmitting information to a London-based television broadcaster.

Reports mentioned that Afkari was also alleged to have had a large amount of foreign currency on her when she was detained. She was apparently trying to flee the country.

Responding to the arrest, Iran International tweeted that it "categorically denies" the Islamic republic's claims. It further noted that in addition to Afkari, the security forces had also detained her husband and three-year-old daughter. Saeed, the other brother confirmed it.

In a potential turning point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Moscow has ordered its military to withdraw from Ukraine's Kherson city. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday (November 8) that the troops will withdraw from the west bank of the Dnipro River amid Ukrainian attacks near the southern city of Kherson.

Speaking during a televised meeting with Russia's commander in Ukraine Sergei Surovikin, Shoigu asked to "begin to pull out troops". The defence minister's announcement can be deemed as Russia's most significant retreat in the eight-month-old war.

As quoted, the Russian general said, "We will save the lives of our soldiers and the fighting capacity of our units. Keeping them on the right (western) bank is futile. Some of them can be used on other fronts."

Shoigu responded: "I agree with your conclusions and proposals. Proceed with the withdrawal of troops and take all measures to transfer forces across the river."

Twitter has withdrawn the 'official' label just hours after it was rolled out, as the new boss of the social media giant, Elon Musk, said that he "killed" the feature that was visible on multiple Twitter handles of governments, politicians, officials and media houses across nations.

Musk also urged millions of users to note that Twitter will do lots of "dumb things" in the coming months. He said, "We will keep what works & change what doesn't."

For a brief period, Twitter came up with a new grey "official" label for certain accounts as part of its massive revamp after Musk's buyout of the company.

Earlier, Esther Crawford, who is a Twitter products executive, said that the new tag would include "government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures".

Stunning U-turn: Maverick Musk says 'killed' Twitter's 'official' label, just hours after rollout and hype

Researchers have unearthed and even translated an ancient ivory comb which apparently contains the oldest known sentence.

It's written in the Canaanite alphabet, a language of people of lands believed to have included parts of Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. It is also a language that spawned modern language systems, such as Arabic and Hebrew.

The ancient comb dates back to around 1700BCE and the inscription on it read: "May this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard!" The team of researchers said that it's a spell to eradicate beard lice.

The comb is basically telling the people to comb their hair and beards to get rid of lice, and after Israeli archaeologists found it at Tel Lachish in Israel, it seems the hair-related issues were since the bronze age.

Professor Yosef Garfinkel, from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said: "This is the first sentence ever found in the Canaanite language in Israel. This is a landmark in the history of the human ability to write."

Prof Garfinkel further said, "The inscription is very human. You have a comb and on the comb you have a wish to destroy lice on the hair and beard. Nowadays we have all these sprays and modern medicines and poisons. In the past they didn’t have those."

Notably, the comb was discovered in 2017 at the site in south-central Israel. The inscriptions were spotted by the team researcher in December last year and were deciphered by Semitic epigraphist Dr Daniel Vainstub.

In the Jerusalem Journal of Archaeology, the researcher noted that the letters spell out seven words that form the first completely deciphered sentence in a Canaanite dialect.

Professor Garfinkel explained: "There are Canaanites in Ugarit in Syria, but they write in a different script, not the alphabet that is used till today. The Canaanite cities are mentioned in Egyptian documents, the Amarna letters that were written in Akkadian, and in the Hebrew Bible. The comb inscription is direct evidence for the use of the alphabet in daily activities some 3,700 years ago."

Americans have voted in the midterm elections 2022 for members of the House of Representatives and Senate. During the midterm polls, the ballot majorly featured concerns ranging from abortion to the environment, from guns to sports betting, and even the legalisation of marijuana in some states.

Americans have voted in the midterm elections 2022 for members of the House of Representatives and Senate. During the midterm polls, the ballot majorly featured concerns ranging from abortion to the environment, from guns to sports betting, and even the legalisation of marijuana in some states. As per the partial results, Democrats have done better than expected as they avoided their worst fears of a 'Red Wave'. Meanwhile, Republicans hold out hope that they will retake both chambers of Congress. But the projected results show an interesting trend to highlight how some of the main referendums fared in the midterm polls in which the issues Democrats majorly cared were focused on abortion rights, while Republicans were concerned about inflation and the state of the economy. IN PICS | US midterm elections: Historic milestones marked by winning candidates in 2022 Marijuana Across the country, 19 of the 50 states and the US capital Washington DC have legalised the recreational use of marijuana for adults. Apart from that, the decriminalisation movement has been gaining strength. In the midterm polls, five states addressed the question including four conservative states. But the projected results appear to show a mixed night for marijuana on the ballot. Voters in Arkansas, North Dakota and South Dakota have rejected the measures. Meanwhile, the legalisation of marijuana won in Maryland and Missouri. Both states now bring the total where recreational use is allowed to 21. Abortion Abortion remained the hotly debated topic throughout the election process after the recent decision by Supreme Court. The court in June overturned the 1973 ruling enshrining abortion as a constitutional right, and left it up to individual US states to decide. In the midterm polls this year, abortion-related measures were on the ballot in six states. For the Kentucky Constitutional Amendment 2, 52.4% of voters said no to the 'No Right to Abortion'. An overwhelming 77.2% of voters said yes to Vermont Proposal 5, 'Constitutional Right to Reproductive Autonomy'. On the other hand, 56.7% of voters said yes to Michigan Proposal 3, 'Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom'. And 52.4% of voters said yes to Montana Legislative Referendum 131, Born-Alive Infants Regulation'. Around 65.0% of voters said yes to California Proposition 1, 'Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom'. The trends showed that a majority of people in the mentioned states have voted to uphold abortion rights. ALSO READ | Tight race makes life uncomfortable for Republicans and Donald Trump Gun control A rise in gun violence across the nation is a cause of major concern. In the midterm election, Iowa and Oregon addressed the controversial question of guns but with a twist. Iowa voters were asked to enshrine the "fundamental individual right" to "keep and bear arms" in the state constitution. Meanwhile, as per the measure on the ballot in Oregon, gun buyers must obtain a permit and ban sales of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Iowa voters moved to expand gun rights in their state with the approval of Amendment 1, which might strengthen gun rights. Meanwhile, Oregon voters have passed one of the country’s strictest gun control measures. Prison slavery Slavery is an ancient problem in America. It's been more than 150 years since the US constitution banned chattel slavery. But in the midterms 2022, the states addressed an exception to the 13th Amendment which allows for forced labour by prisoners. This question was on the ballot in five states. Alabama, Louisiana, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont voted to prohibit enslavement or involuntary servitude as punishment for crimes or payment of debts or fines. Voters in four states have approved ballot measures that will change their state constitutions to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude as punishment for crime, while those in a fifth state rejected a flawed version on the question. Notably, voters in four states have approved ballot measures, while a fifth state rejected a flawed version of the question. Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee and Vermont approved the measures that could curtail the use of prison labour. While Louisiana voters have rejected a ballot question. It asked the voter whether or not they supported an amendment to prohibit the use of involuntary servitude in jails. WATCH | US Midterm Elections and its global impact × Some Other measures In the midterm elections in 2022, climate change and the environment were overshadowed by other questions. In California, there was a proposal on the ballot to increase taxes on the state's wealthiest residents to help finance the shift to electric vehicles, but it got rejected. But voters in Massachusetts approved the measure. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

From marijuana to abortion: How did referendums fare in US midterm polls 2022?

Tens of thousands of supporters of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday gathered at the site in Wazirabad in Punjab province where an assassination attempt was made on the former prime minister last week as the party resumed its stalled long march to Islamabad in presence of its top leaders.

The 'Haqeeqi Azadi' (real freedom) march, demanding fresh general elections, was suspended following the attack on 70-year-old Khan on November 3.

Khan suffered bullet injuries in the right leg when two gunmen fired a volley of bullets at him and others standing on a container-mounted truck in the Wazirabad area, where he was leading the march.

He underwent surgery for bullet injuries at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital owned by his charitable organisation. He is advised to take rest for four to six weeks by doctors.
Addressing his supporters via a video, Khan alleged that the "plan" to assassinate him was made in September.

"This incident 'no, this planned assassination attempt', I want to clear that this plan was made in September," he claimed. "On September 24, I said in a public rally that this plan was formed and that they will blame a religious fanatic [for it]."

Khan, who is recovering from injuries, said that the people who wanted him dead had planned to pin his murder on a "religious fanatic".

"They planned that if a religious fanatic kills me, the responsibility from them will go away," he claimed.

Khan has blamed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal Naseer of hatching a plot to assassinate him.

He made a passionate appeal to Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to look into a series of matters to put the country's direction right during his speech.

"The nation is looking up to the CJP. Look as an ex-prime minister I cannot register an FIR regarding attack on me. Chief Justice of Pakistan, I want you to take action," he pleaded and urged him to take notice of journalist Arshad Sharif's murder, Senator Azam Swati's torture and non-registration of a case against suspects of attack on him.

Khan alleged that the investigation agencies are in the hands of thieves, a reference to the Sharif and Zardari families.

"Who can trust these army officers (like Maj-Gen Faisal Naseer and etc)," Khan said, adding that the nation has lost "complete trust in the institutions" and now all eyes are on the Supreme Court.

"Pakistan is going to become a banana republic as there is no rule of law (in the country), chief justice you will have to save the country. The country's future lies in your (CJP) hands,? Khan asserted.

Leading the march in the absence of Khan, former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi earlier said that the party chairman would soon join his supporters in the long march to Islamabad.

"Today I want to give a clear message that the convoy of PTI is on the move. If you want to create a Pakistan of a new ideology, then you have to accompany Imran Khan," Qureshi, flanked by other party leaders including Hammad Azhar, Faisal Javed, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry among others, told marchers in Wazirabad, some 150 kms from Lahore.

Faisal Javed was among those injured in the attack on Khan.

Qureshi said that despite an assassination attempt on Khan, his party didn't bow or give up on its struggle for freedom.

"Today, we had the option to either stand behind the bullet proof glass or in front of it... And we have chosen the latter...We have decided to look you in the eye. We have decided to tell you that PTI didn't bow and will never do it ...No matter what comes," Qureshi told supporters.

Senior party leader Asad Umar said that no one could scare Khan or his followers.

"Exactly a week from today, an attempt was made to take Imran Khan's life...But let me tell you today, it was not an attempt to take one man's life, it was an attempt to silence the nation's voice," he said.

The long march resumed with prayers for those killed and injured in the shooting.

More than 20,000 policemen have been deployed at the march to provide protection to the protesters.

"Special security arrangements have been made to secure the container of the top leadership of the PTI," senior leader and Punjab minister Bashrat Raja told PTI on Thursday.

On Sunday, Khan had announced resumption of the long march on Tuesday but later the party changed the decision and rescheduled it for Thursday. He would join the long march in Rawalpindi when it reaches there in 10 to 14 days.

During a meeting presided by Khan at his Lahore residence on Wednesday, it was decided that the "Haqeeqi Azadi" march would move towards Rawalpindi from the spot following a public gathering.

The federal government has not yet granted permission to PTI to hold its rally in Islamabad.

A three-member probe panel would be formed on Thursday, which will provide details of the investigation done by local police to the joint investigation team.

One person was killed and 11 others, including Khan, were injured in the attack during the long march.

The PML-N-led government says Khan's long march to Islamabad is aimed at appointing an army chief of his own choice. Incumbent Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa is retiring later this month.

Meanwhile, Khan's sons Qasim Khan and Suleman Khan arrived in Lahore on Thursday from the United Kingdom to meet their father.

They were received by the PTI leaders at the Lahore airport. The party said they were eager to see their father in the wake of assassination attempt on him last week.

The cricketer-turned-politician, who was ousted as prime minister in april this year after a no-confidence motion was passed in the National Assembly, is seeking fresh general elections in Pakistan.

However, the federal government led by Prime Minister Sharif is opposed to holding elections now. The term of the current National Assembly will end in August 2023.

The political turmoil in Pakistan comes as it reels from the economic crisis and the effects of devastating floods.

France will suspend the plan to welcome 3,500 refugees currently in Italy after Rome's refusal to let a charity ship disembark 234 migrants rescued at sea, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Thursday.

France has agreed to evacuate only four passengers out of more than 200 passengers onboard the Ocean Viking rescue ship. Citing health reasons, following the tense exchanges with Italy on which country should allow the boat to dock, France has finally taken a decision over the issue.

European Union might slap Facebook with charges as the bloc's antitrust enforcers are all set to prepare a case against the social media giant, over the anti-competitive abuses on its marketplace platform, media outlet POLITICO reported citing sources.

The antitrust regulators are apparently drawing up charges against Meta over its use of customer data and the tying of classified advertisements service known as Marketplace, the sources mentioned.

Facebook Marketplace, which is Meta's classified ads business, was launched in 2016. It is used in 70 countries to buy and sell items.

Man throws eggs at King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla: Video

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, slammed as "farcical" the First Information Report (FIR) that was filed by the Punjab province in the case regarding the assassination bid on him.

Taking to his official Twitter account, Khan wrote that on the issue of the FIR, his lawyers will give the position of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

"All my life I dreamt of seeing my country as a prospering welfare state & my struggle throughout has been to make this dream a reality for my nation. Today the nation has awakened, understood & risen," he added.

"In support of my message of justice, freedom & national sovereignty. When we are so close to our goal no fear or threat of death can stop my struggle. Our peaceful.protests & dialogue are only for Pakistan's Haqeeqi Azadi".

Last week, the former Pakistan PM escaped what his supporters called a bid on his life, when he was shot in the leg two to three times at a political rally.

The FIR was registered on Monday after the country's apex court issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Punjab police to so. The Supreme Court issued the order to the IG of Punjab Police, Faisal Shahkar, to file the FIR of the gun attack and to submit a report within 24 hours.

The prime suspect Naveed was arrested on the spot and has been named in the case registered under various charges. However, PTI leaders rejected the FIR, terming it a "mockery of the law and the top court's order."

Pakistan-based media outlets quoted former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry as saying that if the FIR doesn`t include the three accused named by Imran Khan, then it is not more than a piece of paper.

"For the future of Pakistan the doors of PTI are open to all democratic loving forces to join our struggle for Justice, rule of law & freedom from foreign subservience - our goal of Haqeeqi Azadi," Khan tweeted.
