The activity was carried out at sites in the Palk Bay area, which is a shallow water region between the southern Coast of India (Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district) and the neighbouring island nation, Sri Lanka.

Teams comprising of three Coast Guard divers and other divers from a private organization carried out nine hours of diving and clean-up activities, which led to recovery of multiple ghost nets. Ghost nets are basically abandoned or discarded fishing nets that are drifting in the ocean or are left entangled in rocky areas.

Announcing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies said that they were working towards creating the world's first geospatial imaging satellite featuring both SAR and Optical sensors.

Geospatial imagery refers to the broad spectrum of work that aims to measure and visually analyze the earth from up above and understand various changes, natural processes, environmental phenomena etc.&nbsp;

Under the terms of the agreement, Antaris will provide the SaaS technology platform required to design, simulate, build and manage the earth observation satellite from GalaxEye and its onboard Drishti sensor.

Ananth Technologies will provide AIT (Assembly, Integration and Test) services and manufacturing capabilities. XDLINX Labs, will be responsible for the design of the spacecraft bus and supply chain integration services.

According to the firms that have united for this venture, they intend to solve a legacy challenge for consumers of remote sensing data. "Typically, satellite constellation operators have deployed specialized satellites to capture specific types of data. Each image or data point is captured at a unique time from a unique location, making it difficult to correlate data from separate satellites.

The new multi-sensor satellite being developed under the MOU will capture, for the first time in history, both SAR data and optical data from the same satellite—improving the ability to correlate the data and its analytical utility. &nbsp;The resulting datasets will have tremendous value for environmental, insurance and defence applications" read their statement.&nbsp;

Indian and US firms unite to build satellite with both Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical sensors

Sri Lankan Navy said a joint operation with the Lankan Coast Guard led to the interception of an Indian boat and its five crew caught allegedly carrying Kerala Cannabis (434kgs)&nbsp;in the northwestern waters of the island nation. This operation carried out on Tuesday (September 13) evening&nbsp;also led to the apprehension of a Lankan fishing boat and five Lankan nationals who were allegedly connected with the smuggling attempt.&nbsp;

"SLCGS Suraksha engaged in this special operation inspected a suspicious Indian dhow in Sri Lankan waters west of the Kudiramalai Point, Puttalam through the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on 13th September. The inspection led to the recovery of about 434kg (wet weight) of Kerala cannabis in nine sacks and it prompted SLCGS Suraksha to seize the stock of narcotics with five Indian suspects aboard the dhow," read the statement from the Lankan Navy.&nbsp;

It added,&nbsp;SLCGS Suraksha also seized a local one-day fishing trawler with five Sri Lankans, on suspicion that the trawler had reached the sea area to transfer the consignment from the Indian dhow and bring them ashore.&nbsp;

The street value of the stock of Kerala cannabis seized in this operation is believed to be around USD 352,000.&nbsp;The intercepted Indian vessel, the contraband, and the 10 suspects are to be handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for legal proceedings and investigation.&nbsp;

The new global forum is dubbed 'Abu Dhabi Space Debate' and its maiden edition will be held in the eponymous city in December this year. The event is meant to offer a global forum for the space industry, nations, business leaders and policymakers to come together and address the issues facing growth and innovation in space.

The event gains importance given the pace at which many nations are venturing towards developing space capabilities and are witnessing a boom in the private aerospace sector. Hosted under the patronage of UAE president Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Abu Dhabi Space Debate is to take place on the 5th and 6th of December 2022.

According to Her Excellency Sarah Bint Yousif Al Amiri, Chair of the UAE Space Agency and the Abu Dhabi Space Debate Committee, the world is seeing a huge expansion in organisations developing space capabilities and potential, but that growth in the sector brings challenges, ranging from preservation of national interests through to the regulation of private sector players. "The Abu Dhabi Space Debate aims to create a global platform that will bring together a diverse and challenging audience and forge concrete progress in advancing international co-operation, standards and policy-setting for the space sector", she added.

The Emirates operates 19 Earth-orbiting satellites, whereas ten additional satellites are under development. With over 50 organisations and institutions and five research centres for space sciences, the Emirates has committed to long-term interplanetary exploration missions and the accelerated development of its emerging private sector space ecosystem.

On the importance of international collaboration in space, Al Amiri said, "Our space programme has been built on collaboration, with partners in Europe, South Korea, the US, Japan and elsewhere. We have been keen to embrace international efforts to work together on common goals and objectives, and we’re committed to supporting efforts from the Artemis Accords to the United Nations Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities."

The maiden edition of the Abu Dhabi Space Debate is set to gather leaders and policymakers in the public and private space sector from around the globe, particularly from China, Europe, India, Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

UAE to host representation from India, US, China, Europe for 'Abu Dhabi Space Debate'

India's mightiest warship and first indigenous aircraft carrier is powered by engines assembled and tested by an Indian Aerospace company, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. In a statement, the company said that they had supplied four General Electric(GE) LM2500 Gas Turbines, after their assembly and testing at the HAL facility in the southern Indian metropolis of Bengaluru.&nbsp;

The General Electric engines, which are of American origin will power the 40,000-tonne carrier with 88 MW and a top speed of 28 knots. According to GE, their LM2500 series of engines have clocked more than 100 million operating hours.&nbsp;

HAL carried out critical activities toward the readiness of IAC for basin trials. &nbsp;HAL’s team was actively involved in the integration of the power plant to the IAC and was onboard IAC for all sea trials, the company said. HAL is an Indian government-run aerospace and defence company that is involved in the design and manufacture of fighter jets, helicopters, jet engines, marine gas turbine engines etc.&nbsp;

INS Vikrant was commissioned into the Navy on Friday, September 2, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Defence Minister, the Chief of Naval Staff and several top dignitaries. The event took place at the Cochin Shipyard, where the ship was built over the last decade.&nbsp;

The commissioning of the Vikrant marks a significant milestone for India, as the country will henceforth be able to defend its 7500-km-long coastline with two operational aircraft carriers - INS Vikramaditya(of Russian origin) and the Indigenously designed and built Vikrant. However, the Vikrant would require more than a year following its commissioning to be fully operational. Thus far, the ship's crucial systems and sub-systems have been tested during multiple phases of sea trials. However, in order for the ship to be fully combat-ready, there are several other components such as radars, weapons etc. to be integrated, tested and proven.

Built at a cost of Rs.20,000cr, the warship has a displacement of over 40,000tons(which is approximately eight times the weight of an average warship). The floating airfield is 262 meters long and 62 meters at its widest, the ship's flight deck is as vast as two football fields. The body of the ship or its hull has enough steel to erect more than three Eiffel towers, that’s about 21,000 tons of steel, specially developed by India’s Defence Research Development Organisation.

This Indian aerospace firm supplied the engines that power INS Vikrant

As on date, the US Mission in India has issued the highest-ever number of student VISAs. The US Embassy in New Delhi and four Consulates in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai prioritised the processing of 82,000 student visa applications from May to August this year. Indian start-up patents world's first 3-D printed, single-piece rocket engine

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently announced the successful test of a supersonic 'Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator' (IAD). The IAD was indigenously designed by ISRO's lead facility, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), and was realised by the Indian industry. WION spoke to Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, regarding the significance of this test; what went into the making, and the potential this technology holds.

Traditionally, rocket scientists think of ways and means to have their rockets travel faster and do so more efficiently. However, when it comes to performing interplanetary missions and recovering spent rocket stages(re-usability), it is crucial to slow down a rocket/spacecraft. The rocket stages that are re-entering earth's atmosphere travel at supersonic speeds and spacecraft entering other planets travel at hypersonic speeds.

The commonly used technology to slow down a descending spacecraft/rocket is the firing of a retro-rocket. Simply put, when a rocket is on the ground its engines are fired to lift it off and it functions like a typical rocket. In the case of re-entry, the rocket is travelling at high speeds owing to the energy added by its propulsion system and gravitational pull on its mass.&nbsp;

So, the same engines used for lift-off are fired again to slow it down to a suitable speed for landing. The IAD aims to do something similar without firing rocket engines. It just uses friction or aerodynamic drag.

"IAD is an inflatable structure made of kevlar fabric, coated with Polychloroprene. As the IAD is made of fabric, it can be packed into a small volume of 15litres and can be packed into the nosecone of RH300 rocket (which was used for the test). Once the test rocket reaches an altitude of about 84kilometre, the IAD is deployed and begins to slow down the rocket body(the component known as the payload part) as it undergoes atmospheric re-entry and finally splashes down in the sea" explained Dr Nair.

He added that the inflation of the IAD was carried out by compressed nitrogen gas stored in a gas bottle. Once the IAD falls into the sea, it is deflated by firing a pyro valve to prevent it from floating and thereby causing any harm to sea vehicles.&nbsp;

Notably, this is the first time that an IAD is designed specifically for spent stage recovery. The IAD has huge potential in a variety of space applications like recovery of spent stages of the rocket, landing payloads on Mars or Venus, and making space habitats for human space flight missions.

"This demonstration opens a gateway for cost effective spent stage recovery using the IAD technology. This technology can also be used in ISRO's future missions to Venus and Mars" said Dr S Somanath, Chairman ISRO, and Secretary DOS, who witnessed the successful launch.

Queried about the scalability of the IAD and the possibility of guided landings, Dr Nair said that it can be scaled up to recover even a spent rocket stage.&nbsp;

"It can be used to systematically decelerate a re-entering vehicle by gradually inflating the decelerator. As such, the IAD is not guided. For sea landing precise guidance is not a must. By suitably sizing the IAD, the need for a retro rocket can be avoided for spent stages of vehicle first stage, where energy of spent stage is comparatively less." said Dr Nair before adding that we are yet to do a scaled-up design.&nbsp;

On India's twin interest in Sri Lanka, he said that it was about stability in a civilisational neighbour and marginalising Chinese influence in the region. In this regard, he pointed out the presence of Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman in Washington DC, during Sri Lanka's IMF negotiations and India's generous aid that continues to flow towards the island nation.&nbsp;

"Japan and Sri Lanka have had a cordial relationship since 1952 and the former is a major creditor of the island nation. Japan provides grants, loan assistance, technical cooperation, support through UN agencies, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Japanese and International NGOs. Japan has always had a multipronged pronged line of action which includes promoting high-quality inclusive growth, development cooperation for inclusive growth, mitigating vulnerability and tsunami relief," Lt Gen Shankar (retd) said.

However, he cautions that India must not once again be seen as interfering in Lankan internal affairs, as was the case during the IPKF, LTTE period. He points out that this led to India's marginalisation and created space for China's foray into the island nation. He opines, that India’s opportunity lies in China’s economic slowdown, internal problems, and its preoccupation with Taiwan and USA.

Regarding other nations that have an influence over Sri Lanka, he said that USA and Pakistan have not been major creditors but have a role to play. "USA's nod will be necessary for the IMF bailout to come through and given the strategic convergence with India, the US will not lose this opportunity to strengthen the Indo-Pacific strategy. The US will attempt to counter China's influence, by working with India and Japan," he opined.&nbsp;

He also noted that Pakistan has always had good ties with Sri Lanka and was the main provider of arms during the LTTE period. Gen Shankar(retd) mentioned the recent docking of PNS Taimur, a Pakistani naval ship in Colombo and a Naval exercise between two countries as a good indicator of Pak-Lanka relations, despite various other detracting factors. He urged that India take precautions to ensure that Pakistani influence (at the behest of China) stays marginalised in Sri Lanka.

In light of Sri Lanka's foreign policy dilemma, Col R Hariharan(retd) a veteran Military Intelligence specialist who served the Indian Army said that the island nation is a strategic pivot in the Indo-Pacific. Elaborating on Sri Lanka's Geostrategic compulsions, he said that the country was midway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and had a favourable tropical climate.&nbsp;

On how Sri Lankans viewed India and China, he feels that the Lankan side would always think about India's reaction on any issue, as India is barely 29kms away (from certain points in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu), whereas China is more than 2000kms away. He pointed out that Sri Lanka is a strategic pivot whose foreign policy is guided by physical, and geographical factors and that Colombo is a good eavesdropping location.

India and Japan can unite to counter Chinese influence in Sri Lanka, say experts

ISRO PSLV to be entirely made by industry

The Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), the first interplanetary exploration undertaken by an Arab nation, has made first observations of a new type of proton aurora around Mars. The proton aurora captured on Mars by the Emirati Mars mission are comparable to the aurora that's visible near Earth's North Pole (Northern Lights). 
 
In simple terms, the Nothern lights occur on earth because of the Solar Wind getting attracted by Earth's magnetic field and eventually colliding with atoms in the atmosphere.&nbsp;

According to the UAE Space Agency, this new patchy type of Martian proton aurora is formed when the high-speed solar wind directly impacts Mars’ dayside upper atmosphere and emits ultraviolet light as it slows down. The discovery of the aurora was made in snapshots of the dayside disk obtained by the Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), which observes the planet’s upper atmosphere and exosphere, scanning for variability in atmospheric composition and atmospheric escape to space.&nbsp;

“We’ve seen emissions at these wavelengths before, thanks to proton aurora studies by NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission, but these EMM EMUS images represent the first time we’ve had a global view of spatial variability in proton aurora at Mars, and the first time we’ve been able to unambiguously observe this patchy structure,” said EMM science team member&nbsp;Mike Chaffin.&nbsp;

“We know that these wavelengths are only emitted by the Hydrogen atom, which tells us that super energetic Hydrogen atoms must be present in the atmosphere in order to produce the auroral emission. The aurora manifests as bright regions scattered across the dayside of the planet in two ultraviolet wavelengths associated with the Hydrogen atom. Under normal conditions, the dayside disk of the planet at these wavelengths is uniform, and the planetary brightness results from Hydrogen atoms scattering sunlight. When the aurora occurs, small regions of the planet become much brighter at these wavelengths, signifying intense localized energy deposition in the atmosphere.

EMM's Science Lead Hessa Al Matroushi opines that the latest discovery adds a new kind of event to the long list of those currently being studied by EMM and challenges the scientific community's existing views of how the proton aurora on Mars’ dayside are formed.&nbsp;

“The EMM Hope probe has so far uncovered many unexpected phenomena that extend our understanding of Mars’ atmospheric and magnetospheric dynamics. These new observations, combined with MAVEN data, have lifted the lid on entirely new possibilities for scientific research" it was added.&nbsp;

Martian proton auroras were originally discovered by NASA's MAVEN and subsequently found in data from ESA’s Mars Express mission, but most of these previous observations show uniform auroral emission across the dayside of the planet. However, the latest observations by UAE's Mars Mission is able to unambiguously reveal small-scale spatial structure. Scientists from both teams now believe the patchy aurora can only be produced by plasma turbulence in the space surrounding Mars.&nbsp;

“Whether we’ll see anything as spectacular as what we’ve already got is anyone’s guess, but I’m hopeful. Hope continues to far exceed our expectations for scientific discovery, and I can’t wait to see what we learn next.” said Chaffin.

The Emirates Mars Mission is the culmination of a knowledge transfer and development effort that started in 2006. The process saw Emirati engineers working with global partners to develop UAE’s spacecraft design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Known as 'Hope', the probe is a fully autonomous spacecraft, carrying three instruments to measure Mars’ atmosphere. Weighing some 1,350 kg, and approximately the size of a small SUV, the spacecraft was designed and developed by MBRSC engineers working with academic partners, including those at the University of Colorado, Boulder; Arizona State University and the University of California, Berkeley.

The Emirates Mars Mission is studying the Martian atmosphere and the relationship between the upper layer and lower regions. The Hope Probe’s historic arrival at the Red Planet coincided with a year of celebrations to mark the UAE’s Golden Jubilee in 2021.

The proton aurora captured on Mars by the Emirati Mars mission are comparable to the aurora that's visible near Earth's North Pole (Northern Lights). In simple terms, the Nothern lights occur on earth because of the Solar Wind getting attracted by Earth's magnetic field and eventually colliding with atoms in the atmosphere. According to the UAE Space Agency, this new patchy type of Martian proton aurora is formed when the high-speed solar wind directly impacts Mars’ dayside upper atmosphere and emits ultraviolet light as it slows down. The discovery of the aurora was made in snapshots of the dayside disk obtained by the Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), which observes the planet’s upper atmosphere and exosphere, scanning for variability in atmospheric composition and atmospheric escape to space. “We’ve seen emissions at these wavelengths before, thanks to proton aurora studies by NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission, but these EMM EMUS images represent the first time we’ve had a global view of spatial variability in proton aurora at Mars, and the first time we’ve been able to unambiguously observe this patchy structure,” said EMM science team member Mike Chaffin. “We know that these wavelengths are only emitted by the Hydrogen atom, which tells us that super energetic Hydrogen atoms must be present in the atmosphere in order to produce the auroral emission.
