Pradeep John, who runs a popular weather page on Facebook, had also mentioned about the two hottest days in Chennai over a 200-year period coinciding with cyclones having moved away. He mentioned the patterns observed on May 31, 2003, and May 30, 1998, when the mercury soared to 44 degrees Celcius and 44.1 degrees Celcius respectively after the cyclones curved away to Burma.&nbsp;

He added that going by the current pattern, Chennai and adjoining districts are likely to record maximum temperatures of this season in the following week. &nbsp;

The information which has been sourced from their respective affidavits is tabulated on a free app that is available for download from the Android Play Store.&nbsp;

Generally one would have to sift through hundreds of individual PDF files from the Election commission site in order to have a look at the candidates’ affidavits, but this App displays information in a user-friendly manner in Tamil and English. A tap on the constituency will display the candidates and once a particular a candidate is selected his/her individual details will be shown.&nbsp;

The individual details include a photograph, the party’s name, candidates’ educational background, profession, assets and liabilities declared, details of pending criminal cases. The details mentioned on the App are as mentioned by the candidates on the self-attested affidavits. In order to distinguish between cases, the criminal cases and the politically motivated cases have been mentioned separately. &nbsp;

Speaking to WION, Jayaram Venkatesan, the Convener of Arappor Iyakkam said, heavyweight candidates from established parties are projected easily, but much is not known about their background. We hope the App will boost the confidence of the good candidates and put fear in the minds of those with a criminal background. This is a politically neutral App that gives equal chance to all candidates.

This App is the result of the efforts of over 200 volunteers who had been working overtime from March 26 until today’s launch, said Deepa Seshadri, State Body Member, Arappor Iyakkam. Our App does not require any personal information or registration for the users, it has been made to empower and educate the voters to choose wisely. With God’s blessings and people’s support, (we don’t know what result they will give) if the NDA front forms a government at the central level, they should first link all the rivers in the country, " he said.

Rajini also added that, if that (river-linking) alone is done half the poverty in the country can be eradicated, crores of people can be employed, farmers lives and condition can be improved. "Hence, I request them to implement it".&nbsp;

He, however, ended on a cautious note, and said, “Please don’t mistake me, this a very sensitive time (election season), I don’t wish to speak anything further.”

Rajinikanth who was to leave for Mumbai, where his latest film ‘Darbar’ is to go on floors from tomorrow, further recollected that he had been a long time supporter of the project to link India’s rivers.&nbsp;

“It was the dream of our Late Prime Minister AB Vajpayee. When he was the prime minister I had met him once and discussed with him about the same. While the attacks have gotten personal, the Chief Minister took it to an all new low while campaigning on Monday. The chief minister started by saying that he had information from senior DMK leaders and functionaries about why Karunanidhi was unable to speak during his final years.

He added that "If Karunanidhi is hale and healthy, Stalin can't become the leader of the DMK. The court said that the project requires a mega realignment as the proposed route would have an adverse effect on environment.

A special bench of Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Bhavani Subbarayan passed the order allowing a batch of petitions by 35 land owners and PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss.

With an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore, this infrastructure project had been a major political issue in the southern state that goes to polls on April 18.

The project had been facing stiff opposition from farmers and environmentalists.

The proposed 8-lane 277-km greenfield expressway was aimed at cutting down travel time between Chennai and Salem by a little over two hours and reducing the distance by around 68 kilometres. As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), it was meant to pass via five districts, namely Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem.

However, the project faced opposition from various groups on the grounds that the 7500 acres of land, which will be acquired for the project, includes agricultural land, villages, orchards, and reserve forests. Land acquisition and compensation for the same were major roadblocks. The protesters were also of the opinion that this project would not be necessary as there are three highways currently connecting the state's capital city with Salem.

While the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami was keen on having this project implemented, the opposition party DMK had stood with the protesters and also said that they were against its implementation. Interestingly, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss was among those who had earlier filed a case against the project. But despite their differences, the PMK in February joined hands with the AIAMDK-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu and will be contesting from seven seats.

Speaking to reporters after the verdict this morning, Advocate Kamaraj who represented the farmers said, "This verdict is for the farmers and the public and it would cause a setback for the state government."

Reacting to the verdict, while campaigning in his constituency Dharmapuri, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss said, "Though we are in an alliance with the AIADMK, we are against this project and support the cause of the farmers."

Life has never been easy for 53-year old Ramanujam (alias) Radha, but she has chosen a tougher path for herself, a path that nobody from her community in Tamil Nadu has taken. She is the first transgender candidate from Tamil Nadu to be contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls. She is contesting as an independent and has been allotted the Computer Mouse symbol.&nbsp;

We caught up with her on her campaign trail, as she traversed the busy lanes of T.Nagar, the commercial hub that falls under the South Chennai Parliamentary constituency. She walks along with her friend Nila, casually chatting with passersby and curious onlookers and urging them to vote for a member of the third gender, that has been neglected and ignored by society.&nbsp;

Speaking fluently in English, Radha recalls that she is a proud post-graduate, with a BA in Economics and MA in English. However, her nomination papers mention only 12th standard as her qualification, as her college certificates were damaged during the 2015 Chennai Floods. Radha laments that despite their educational qualification, jobs are hard to find for a&nbsp;trans person. She makes ends meet by working as&nbsp;a cook and housemaid and is cheerful about her culinary skills.&nbsp;

"I can cook a variety of North Indian and South Indian dishes, but continental would be a little difficult as I haven’t had any formal training", she says with a smile. She is the first transgender candidate from Tamil Nadu to be contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls. She is contesting as an independent and has been allotted the Computer Mouse symbol. We caught up with her on her campaign trail, as she traversed the busy lanes of T.Nagar, the commercial hub that falls under the South Chennai Parliamentary constituency. She walks along with her friend Nila, casually chatting with passersby and curious onlookers and urging them to vote for a member of the third gender, that has been neglected and ignored by society. Speaking fluently in English, Radha recalls that she is a proud post-graduate, with a BA in Economics and MA in English. However, her nomination papers mention only 12th standard as her qualification, as her college certificates were damaged during the 2015 Chennai Floods. Radha laments that despite their educational qualification, jobs are hard to find for a trans person. She makes ends meet by working as a cook and housemaid and is cheerful about her culinary skills. "I can cook a variety of North Indian and South Indian dishes, but continental would be a little difficult as I haven’t had any formal training", she says with a smile. Enjoying loud music and partying is a pleasure for many, but for those in the neighbourhood, it may not be as enjoyable. If in case these neighbours are endangered species of wildlife, the effects of the blaring speakers could even lead to their death!&nbsp;

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust(MCBT) was established by Romulus and Zhai Whitaker in 1976 with the specific goal of securing breeding populations of the three species of Indian crocodile. Today Croc Bank is home to 17 species of crocodilians. It is also one of the largest reptile zoos in the world, spread over eight and a half acres of land and is home to over 2500 reptiles.

The MCBT lies on the picturesque East Coast Road and is located about 40 kms away from Chennai city. Since, mid-2018 the Croc Bank has had a new neighbour, Sheraton Grand Chennai Resort and Spa. The Crocodile bank trust claims that the resort is “built right against our wall”.

In a Facebook post shared yesterday, Padma Shri Romulus Whitaker, the founder of the Crocodile Bank shared details regarding the death of a Cuban Crocodile (Critically Endangered species in the World Conservation Union (IUCN) listing) on the night of 30th March, due to the stress caused by the blaring music played on the hotels lawns, despite many requests to lower the volume. It also mentions that “the Cuban crocodile enclosure is around 50 ft from the wall which divides the hotel from us and the powerful hi-fidelity speakers had been placed right next to it. The animal had been healthy, had fed recently, and had no injuries or history of sickness. This is a critical breeding group of one of the most endangered animals in the world: 1 male and 4 (now 3) females. Extremely lucky that it wasn’t the male who succumbed. We will now consider moving the group to another location, an expensive and difficult undertaking.”

Going by the earlier Facebook posts of the MCBT, problems began in February 2019, when the Crocodile Bank expressed anguish over what they called, “loud music with booming bass levels that triggers aberrant behaviour among the animals”. The statement also adds, “the decibel levels and timings consistently exceed the legal limits. On one particular day, our decibel readings (taken at the Croc Bank) ranged from 85 to 140. The legal daytime decibel level is 55 and post-6 pm, 45 (Pollution Prevention Act 2002). It was like a combo of war zone and earthquake. What are the long-term effects going to be on the zoo animals? The sound is a weapon, and I’m guessing that this auditory torture may well change their breeding and behaviour patterns.”

MCBT had also issued a clarification in February stating that “There was a meeting at the Crocodile Bank today which was attended by our trustees and the Sheraton Grand Hotel team, which included management and two sound technicians. As a starting point, they have assured us that they will comply with the legal regulations in terms of acceptable decibel limits and permitted timings. Additionally, they will take measures to control vibrations. Sheraton will also be appointing a sound consultant who will submit a report in 10 days recommending additional mitigatory methods which the hotel can take.”

However, the death of the endangered Cuban crocodile on March 30th has come as a shocker.

Hotel’s general manager Shibil Malik said, “We at Sheraton Grand Chennai are equally saddened and disturbed to hear of this unfortunate incident. We have continuously worked with the crocodile bank management and taken all possible measures to maintain the safety of the wildlife in the neighbourhood. Hence we do believe that the allegations are unfounded. The death could have been due to a number of natural or unnatural causes. Whilst as a company we are extremely sensitive to animal welfare we do deny these false accusations. We remain committed towards the environment and wildlife and to working with the crocodile bank to ensure the safety of the wildlife so we can all coexist.”
