The developments came to light after the party’s Central Governing Body(CGB) met at their headquarters in Chennai on Thursday evening.&nbsp;

WION has learnt that Haasan had asked members of his party’s Central Governing body to tender their resignations from the respective posts they held(not from the primary membership of the party), following which they obliged. This was ostensibly done because Haasan wanted to do some” soul-searching and make fundamental changes in the party”, after drawing a blank. &nbsp;

“He demanded the resignation and we complied. I think it is because of the defeat and the President decides to look into who is required in the Central governing body. He lost by a small margin, but he did win hearts. It was a wrong constituency selection, had he contested anywhere in Chennai he would’ve won hands down” CK Kumaravel a top entrepreneur, who was asked to resign from the CGB told Zee media.

Shortly after the meeting ended, Kamal’s party issued a statement saying that CGB members Dr R. Mahendran, Muruganandam, Maurya, Thangavelu, Umadevi, CK Kumaravel, Sekar and Suresh Iyer. However, it also added that Kamal Haasan himself would decide on accepting these resignations and the further course of action.&nbsp;

Among those who resigned is Dr R. Mahendran, who served as the Vice President of the fledgeling party. However, unlike the others, Mahendran himself had tendered his resignation (both from the VP post and primary membership) to Kamal Haasan. He also shared with the media, an 8-page letter he had written to Kamal Haasan, outlining the reasons for his decision to quit and a single-page letter written to the party cadre.&nbsp;

Mahendran’s letter to Haasan said that the actor had a non-democratic style of running the party and that Kamal had favoured some advisors and consultants whose services did not benefit the party in any manner. It alleges that Kamal’s party was being pushed to function as a fan club and that the veteran actor was being “managed and manipulated” by his advisors. “I had lost all hope for any semblance of change in how the party is being run over the past one and a half years” Mahendran had written, urging Kamal Haasan to look back at their journey.&nbsp;

“There was no discussion with the Governing body or EC after the poll rout, neither was any planned, but today Haasan comes and says that “this is my party” when the other members pleaded that this was our party. Stating the so-called restructuring of the party, he’s asked the others to resign, whereas I had prepared myself to leave the party, over the last month. It’s reactionary, this is the style of functioning I knew that he will continue to have.” Mahendran told Zee Media. Mahendran believes that if his exit changes the party, then it is his biggest service to the party.&nbsp;

The list of ministers released by the government does not include Chepauk MLA and Stalin’s son Udhayanidhi (who has been at the receiving end of criticism regarding blatant nepotism). It features only two women - Geetha Jeevan and Kayalvizhi Selvaraj.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, Stalin has urged his partymen and cadre to watch the swearing-in ceremony on television from their&nbsp;homes, given the pandemic surge.&nbsp;

In a statement, he said he had hoped for a swearing-in where he could take oath in the presence of their party cadre that led their party to victory, but now it has become impossible owing to the pandemic.&nbsp;

This is the sixth time that a DMK government will be sworn in to rule Tamil Nadu. DMK founder CN Annadurai was the first leader from the party to be elected chief minister in 1967.&nbsp;

Following the demise of Annadurai in 1969 due to cancer, M Karunanidhi took over the reins of the party and government. He was subsequently elected chief minister five times. MK Stalin will be taking over his father’s legacy and will be serving as chief minister of Tamil Nadu for th&nbsp;first time, in his nearly 50 years of political career.

The list of ministers largely consists of senior DMK leaders, successors of veteran leaders and includes only a few members of the younger generation.

An Indian Air Force C17 Globemaster transport aircraft carrying 35 tonnes of aid including 450 oxygen cylinders, each with a capacity of 46.6 litres, landed in Chennai&nbsp;airport on Tuesday morning.

The cylinders were donated by the British Oxygen Company (BOC) and were consigned to the Indian Red Cross Society in Chennai.&nbsp;

After the cargo was unloaded, the first C-17 took off by around 7:45 am. Chennai Airport authorities said that they had facilitated the smooth movement of the IAF aircraft.&nbsp;

Earlier, in the second phase, only those who were 45 and above were allowed to be vaccinated against coronavirus. Earlier this week, the Tamil Nadu government said that it had placed orders for 1.5crore vaccines via the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC). COVID-19: Tamil Nadu government extends ongoing lockdown until further notice

After a four-day search and rescue operation involving the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Navy assets, fishing boat Mercedes which set sail on April 6 was located around 370 km&nbsp;from Lakshadweep.

The vessel with 11-crew that had set sail from Thengapattnam harbour in &nbsp;Kanyakumari, was on a 30-day voyage towards Kerala, when it was feared sunk around 597 nautical miles from Goa.&nbsp;

Tamil Nadu Fisheries authorities had alerted the Indian Coast Guard on&nbsp;April 24 about debris spotted by other fishing boats, raising suspicion of Mercedes having sunk. Following this, the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Center (MRCC) of the Indian Coast Guard, Mumbai activated the International Safety Net to alert merchant vessels transiting the region to look out for the said boat.&nbsp;

Simultaneously, ICGS Samudra Prahari was diverted for search, MRCC, Mumbai coordinated with the merchant vessel Maersk Horsburgh to join the search operation along with fishing boats operating in the area. As the reported position was in Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region, MRCC Karachi was also requested for assistance.&nbsp;

Considering the distance from the mainland, the Indian Navy carried out Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft. It was also learnt that the fishing boat was not carrying Automatic identification System (which transmits a vessel’s location) or any other transponder which could have assisted in early locating.&nbsp;

After four days of continuous search, amidst challenges posed by distance from mainland and weather, the missing boat was located around 200 miles (around 370 km) from Lakshadweep Islands. An ICG Dornier Aircraft located and corroborated the presence of the boat on Wednesday and MRCC Mumbai established contact via a satellite phone that the vessel was carrying.&nbsp;

In the interim, information was also received from Tamil Nadu fisheries authorities&nbsp;on the crew of fishing vessel Mercedes having called up home via satellite phone to indicate their safe condition.

AN ICG ship deployed near Lakshadweep was diverted to render medical and logistical assistance to the crew and the fishing boat. Under escort of ICG ship, the vessel is expected to return to its home port by May 3.&nbsp;

After a four-day search and rescue operation involving the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Navy assets, fishing boat Mercedes which set sail on April 6 was located around 370 km from Lakshadweep. The vessel with 11-crew that had set sail from Thengapattnam harbour in Kanyakumari, was on a 30-day voyage towards Kerala, when it was feared sunk around 597 nautical miles from Goa. Tamil Nadu Fisheries authorities had alerted the Indian Coast Guard on April 24 about debris spotted by other fishing boats, raising suspicion of Mercedes having sunk. Following this, the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Center (MRCC) of the Indian Coast Guard, Mumbai activated the International Safety Net to alert merchant vessels transiting the region to look out for the said boat. Simultaneously, ICGS Samudra Prahari was diverted for search, MRCC, Mumbai coordinated with the merchant vessel Maersk Horsburgh to join the search operation along with fishing boats operating in the area. As the reported position was in Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region, MRCC Karachi was also requested for assistance. Considering the distance from the mainland, the Indian Navy carried out Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft. It was also learnt that the fishing boat was not carrying Automatic identification System (which transmits a vessel’s location) or any other transponder which could have assisted in early locating. After four days of continuous search, amidst challenges posed by distance from mainland and weather, the missing boat was located around 200 miles (around 370 km) from Lakshadweep Islands. An ICG Dornier Aircraft located and corroborated the presence of the boat on Wednesday and MRCC Mumbai established contact via a satellite phone that the vessel was carrying. In the interim, information was also received from Tamil Nadu fisheries authorities on the crew of fishing vessel Mercedes having called up home via satellite phone to indicate their safe condition. AN ICG ship deployed near Lakshadweep was diverted to render medical and logistical assistance to the crew and the fishing boat. Under escort of ICG ship, the vessel is expected to return to its home port by May 3.

Not all patients who are sick need remdesivir, it is not going to prevent mortality, at the most it will only prevent the duration of your stay” he said.&nbsp;

He also added that the state government had procured enough drugs via the TNMSC and that those who needed the drugs must provide their personal, medical details, test positivity and clinical details at the TNMSC counter.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, amid rising cases in Chennai city, the Chennai Corporation Commissioner has sanctioned permissions for hotels and private hospitals to start private Covid Care centres, by just intimating the civic body.&nbsp; As on Tuesday, there are 0.108&nbsp;million (1.08 lakh) active cases in Tamil Nadu, of which 35,000 are in Chennai.&nbsp;

The Tamil Nadu government, with the consensus of all major political parties, has said that the Vedanta’s Sterlite plant in Tuticorin can service and operate their Oxygen plant for 4 months, using electricity provided by the state government. It has also added that based on the Covid-19 situation and the requirement of oxygen, this period may be extended.&nbsp;

This decision to permit the plant’s operation comes with several conditions - no other unit within the plant will be allowed to operate, electricity will be suspended after the stipulated period and copper or other products cannot be manufactured during these four months. Also, Sterlite will not be permitted to use its power generation unit.&nbsp;

In terms of security arrangements and confidence-building among the local population, the government has said that a team under the leadership of the district collector and police officials, along with government experts in oxygen manufacturing, local people, anti-Sterlite protestors, NGOs, and environmental experts will be deciding and monitoring oxygen production at the plant.&nbsp;

Addressing fellow political leaders at the all-party meeting, Chief Minister Palaniswami said that Vedanta had approached the Supreme Court, seeking permission to maintain its valuable assets in the Smelter plant and produce 1,050 tonne of oxygen, which can be supplied free to the nearby hospitals and other states.&nbsp;

For most people the lockdown year 2020, was all about adjusting to a new normal, but for 22-year old Nethra Kumanan, it was all about slogging twice as hard, with the same consistency every single day in Gran Canaria, Spain. Backed by a team of international experts and her very supportive parents, Nethra is gearing up for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, as the first Indian woman sailor to make it to the highest level of the competitive sport. She is competing in the Laser Radial class, where sailors single-handedly handle the boat and navigate the ocean, covering the shortest distance in the fastest possible way.&nbsp;

Her foray into the sport happened when their Chennai-based family put the two siblings - Nethra and her younger brother to every single summer camp under the sun, more than a decade ago. Singing, Bharatnatyam, arts &amp; crafts, tennis, basketball, skating and kalarippayattu were the myriad list of things they tried, but eventually, it was sailing at the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association near the Chennai Port that caught the then kids’ fancy.&nbsp;

What began as an intense weekend sport for Nethra and her brother clearly proved to be much more, as she won the Nationals in 2013, following which her then-coach Pete recognized her potential to make it to the Asian games. Since then, there’s been no looking back. Nethra has represented India at the Asian Games 2014 and 2018, won a medal at the World Championships and now even qualified for the Olympics. After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, she started bridging the gap, improvising her technique and skills.

It was at the 2015 World Championship in Oman that she got to meet her current coach and two-time Olympian Tamas Eszes, under whom she has been training for the last one and half years.&nbsp;

On the expectations from Nethra at Tokyo this year, Tamas says that this is the beginning of her journey, as going to Tokyo and competing itself is a big step at the age of 22. “You have to compete in two or three Olympic Games to perform. A top 15 finish out of the 44 contestants is a good target. But the next Olympics is just 3 years away and we are expecting good results for 2024”, Tamas added.&nbsp;

Asked when what got her so deeply involved in sailing, Nethra says that she loves sailing for how it is a very complex sport that is all about decision making rather than a contest between strongest, fastest and toughest contenders. “The weather conditions are different every day and it’s about calculated and instant decision making. It is intelligence that works here, not aggression. For me, sailing is a certain amount of freedom that cannot be described in words”, she says hoping that many more people take up the lesser-known sport in India.

“I was around 12 years of age when I started sailing and the Tamil Nadu sailing club that I sailed with was extremely supportive and my father has been the greatest pillar of support, along with the sailing community and the sports authority,” Nethra told Zee Media when asked about the support and backing she received as an athlete in an expensive sport.&nbsp;

While Nethra has become the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics, it must be noted that 9 Indian men have also made it so far. Regarding the measures taken to ensure inclusivity in the male-dominated(in India) sport, Capt. Jitendra Dixit says that currently the ratio of women and men sailors is about 30-70, whereas they target to achieve a 40-60 by end of 2021. “Our aim is to get girls participation at 50% in sailing, as mandated by the IOC to all national authorities. Since sailing is very expensive, we have also waived off region and entry fee for girls” he told Zee Media.

However, sailing has remained largely a government-funded sport in India, with hardly any corporate sponsors. Officials say that the budgeting from the sports ministry has increased by 60-70% over the last few years, in addition to schemes like the Target Olympic podium scheme (TOPS) where sailors qualifying for Olympics are provided funds for foreign training, equipment, coaches and personal staff.&nbsp;

For Nethra’s father who has been always by her side, his biggest hope is that she does well and performs to her own satisfaction. “Whatever she wants, I hope she does that”, Kumanan smiles, as Nethra adds how much she is looking forward to her maiden Olympics.&nbsp;
