A new report extensively documents the innovative ways through which Turkey extradites Uighurs. They first identify them, then send them to a third country and from there China can secure their extradition.

The Telegraph report found that several Uighurs were sent to Tajikistan - a country that readily complies when China files an extradition request.

According to one estimate, 50,000 Uighurs have sought refuge in Turkey. They are trying to evade repression in China but the Dragon’s long arm has now reached them.

WION spoke to Arslan Hidayat, a Uighur rights activist based in Istanbul. Hidayat has first-hand knowledge about these extraditions. Hidayat described the great lengths to which China can go to secure the return of Uighurs.

Hidayat said China hunts for Uighurs as they can expose the country's dictatorial repression.

Beijing sent a request to the Turkish government to extradite an Uighur earlier.&nbsp;

The extradition requested named one Enver Turdi. He had shared information about the Chinese government's abuses with the Western press. In 2015, the Chinese embassy in Turkey refused to issue him a passport. As a result, he couldn’t renew his temporary residence permit for Turkey. Two years later, Enver Turdi was placed in a deportation facility and interrogated by Turkish authorities.

Turkey and China had signed a draft extradition treaty in 2017 but the Turkish parliament hasn’t ratified it. Erdogan wants the Chinese to keep cutting the cheques. In 2010, China and Turkey had signed eight strategic cooperative pacts. It could increase their annual trade volumes to $100 billion this year.

Last year, China’s central bank made a $1 billion cash infusion into the Turkish economy with struggling banks receiving bailouts from China. Beijing has even sanctioned a $3.6 billion package for Turkey’s energy sector.

For these reasons, Erdogan won’t say anything about the Uighurs. The Turkish president is indebted to China just like the rest of the Muslim world.

The same countries which have been quick to slam poor Myanmar for its treatment of Rohingyas cannot find the courage to take on China over Uighurs.

Living in Xinjiang is a dystopian nightmare with extreme surveillance, detention and torture inside internment camps. China has been crushing Uighur Muslims forcing women to undergo sterilization. The Communist Party’s abuse of the Uighurs is outrageous but the Muslim world hasn’t said a word about it.

As a leader of the Muslim world, Riyadh has influence over the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation(OIC) which is the world’s second-largest inter-government organisation after the UN.

However, fifty-seven member states of the OIC haven’t found the courage to criticise China. Last year, 37 countries endorsed a statement of support at the United Nations over China's actions against the Uighurs with almost half of the signatories being Muslim nations.&nbsp;

The message was clear - Islamic nations chose China's money over China's Muslims. The so-called protectors of Muslim faith are simply following the money.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, acting chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: "The Houston consulate is the central node of the Communist Party's vast network of spies &amp; influence operations in the United States."

US State Department said that the consulate was ordered shut "in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans' private information."&nbsp;China hit back by ordering the closure of the US consulate in Chendulu while calling the US move "outrageous and unjustified move which will sabotage China-US relations."&nbsp;

Amid the row, the United States government indicted two Chinese nationals last week for computer hacking.&nbsp;

India on Monday lodged a strong protest with Pakistan High Commission over reports of attempts being made to convert a famous Gurudwara at Naulakha Bazaar in Lahore into a mosque, a spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

"A strong protest was lodged with the Pakistan High Commission today on the reported incident whereby Gurdwara "Shahidi Asthan", site of martyrdom of Bhai Taru Singh at Naulakha Bazaar in Lahore, Pakistan has been claimed as the place of Masjid Shahid Ganj and attempts are being made to convert it to a mosque," MEA Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said.

He said India expressed its concerns, in strongest terms, on the incident and called upon Pakistan to investigate the matter and take immediate remedial measures.

"Pakistan was also called upon to look after the safety, security, well-being of its minority communities including protection of their religious rights and cultural heritage," Srivastava said, responding to a query on the matter.

He said Gurdwara Shahidi Asthan Bhai Taru is a historical Gurdwara where Bhai Taru made supreme sacrifice in 1745. 
 
"The Gurdwara is a place of reverence and considered sacred by the Sikh community. This incident has been viewed with grave concern in India. There have been calls for justice for the minority Sikh community in Pakistan," he added.

Goa reported 258 new coronavirus cases taking the total number of cases in the state to 5119 including 1673 active cases. The death toll due to the virus in the state has risen to 36.

Amid the rising number of coronavirus cases, Mansukh Mandviya minister of state for chemicals and fertilizers said that three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores and four medical device parks will also be developed with a government grant of Rs 100 crores for one park.

Tedros asserted that "COVID-19 has changed our world" while emphasising that it has both brought "people, communities and nations together and driven them apart."

Tedros lauded the efforts of New Zealand, Thailand, Viet Nam, Cambodia and the Caribbean countries for preventing large-scale outbreaks and other countries - China, Canada, South Korea and Germany for bringing large outbreaks under control.

"The most fundamental ingredients for stopping this virus is determination, and the willingness to make hard choices to keep ourselves and each other safe," Tedros said.

Tedros asked people to follow social distancing, wash hands, avoid crowded places and wear masks in order to combat the virus.

"Almost 16 million cases have now been reported to WHO, and more than 640,000 deaths as the pandemic continues to accelerate. In the past 6 weeks, the total number of cases has roughly doubled, WHO chief informed.

China on Monday took control of the US consulate building after ordering the US staff to vacate in retaliation for China's ouster from the Houston consulate in Texas as tensions rose to a new level between the two powerful economies. The United States had accused the Chinese staff in Houston of espionage, as the Chinese hit back making a similar allegation on the US staff at Chengdu citing national security issues.

The US lowered its flag at 6:18 am on Monday as police barracked the area and stepped up security.

In a video message, the US embassy said: "The US consulate in Chengdu has been proudly promoting the mutual understanding between Americans and the people in Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan and Tibet since 1985. We will forever miss you."

Wenbin asserted that the US had taken "unilateral" and "provocative actions" by suddenly asking the Chinese side to close the consulate in Houston.&nbsp;

However, the Chinese foreign ministry said that it did not wish to see the "current situation of relations between China and the US" while adding that the "US bears the entire responsibility".

Wenbin urged the United States to "immediately correct its mistakes and create necessary conditions for the bilateral relations".
