LVM3: All about Chandrayaan-3 Launch Vehicle

Chandrayaan-3 will attempt to soft land on the moon's south pole on August 23 around 6:04 pm IST. The mission was launched on July 14.

Chandrayaan-3 consists of a lander, rover and propulsion module. It can’t travel to space on its own and needs to be attached to launch vehicles or rockets, like the LVM3 in this case.

Why has Chandrayaan-3 been integrated with LVM3?

Gentlemen's Singles at No. 1 Court
Expected time: 1:00 pm local time

The launch vehicle can carry up to 8 tonnes of payload to the lower earth orbit (LEO), which is about 200 km from the Earth's surface.

It is a three-stage launch vehicle, including two solid boosters (S200), the core liquid fuel-based stage (L110), and the cryogenic upper stage (C25).

ISRO renamed the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark-III as Launch Vehicle Mark-III in October last year. It was done to identify its task of placing satellites into a variety of orbits.

LVM3 made its debut in space in 2014 and then also carried Chandrayaan-2 in 2019.

In March this year, it placed 36 OneWeb satellites, weighing 6,000 kg in LEO. This was the second time that LVM3 made a commercial launch. The first one came in October 2022 when it delivered the OneWeb India-1 mission.

One of Ruskin Bond's best-known books, The Blue Umbrella, is set in the beautiful hills of Garhwal and perfectly captures life in a village.

This book is a collection of 30 beautiful short stories from Ruskin Bond. The simple, heart-warming and insightful stories will take you to the heavenly grounds of Dehradun and Mussoorie.

The Night Train at Deoli and Other Stories

This book narrates the stories of Rusty, a quiet, imaginative and sensitive boy who lives in his grandparents’ house in pre-independence Dehradun. The book follows the early childhood to early teens of Rusty.

This novella is about fate, history, and the human heart set during the 1857 Indian Rebellion. Ruth's father is assassinated by Indian rebels in the British magistrate's office, forming the plot of the story.

Three friends go on an enthralling and risky journey to the Pindari Glacier and find a hidden river there. This is said to be Ruskin Bond's debut novel for youngsters.

Ruskin Bond received the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for this work. It follows the exploits of Rusty, a young orphaned Anglo-Indian boy. He lives with Mr Harrison, his local guardian, and is uncomfortable with his harsh parenting tactics.

This is a classic story about friendship and personal development. It follows the story of Rusty when he finds his treasured room is no longer his. He travels to various residences and journeys through friendships while learning about himself.

This unique and weird improvisation of the game has rapidly gained immense popularity, with its videos spreading across the internet.

The word "Kabaddi" is derived from the Tamil word "kai-pidi," which means "hold hands." This signifies the essential element of the game, with a raider chanting "kabaddi" repeatedly while crossing into the opponent's territory, touching their players, and returning to his side, all in a single breath, without being tackled.

However, the new innovative twist of the classic game has brought a fresh and exciting element to the sport, drawing in a new wave of fans.

What is ‘Slap’ Kabaddi? Some rules differ from the classic Kabaddi

The primary difference between Slap Kabaddi and the traditional one is that, instead of tackling or evading opponents, players engage in intense and thrilling slapping contests. This shift in focus adds a new layer of thrill and strategy to the game, as players aim to outsmart their opponents while delivering well-timed and forceful slaps.

The traditional kabaddi format features teams of seven players each, but slap kabaddi is a one-on-one sport. This change allows for a more intimate and intense experience, where players showcase their individual skills, agility, and presence of mind.

Pakistan’s new sport has got the internet talking

On Wednesday, the BBC posted a video on its Instagram account of people playing slap kabaddi. The video led to contrasting opinions, with some finding the sport amusing and others deeming it to be in poor taste.

Haji Tassawur, a kabaddi player from Pakistan explained the rules of the game to BBC and said, “The match is between two individuals. One player scores the point by hitting, while the other player defends to erase that point. Punches are fouls. You can slap your opponent as many times as you want, the number of slaps is not an issue.”

When discussing the popularity of the sport in Pakistan, he said, "People have a preference for the variant of kabaddi that involves slapping, rather than the traditional form. They find great amusement in watching these games, cheering and clapping enthusiastically. The matches held in our area attract a large audience."

He also said, "When I step into the ring, my thoughts are focused on God, and I strive to prevent both myself and my opponent from getting injured. It is considered a defeat if either of us sustains injuries."

Is this even a sport?

The strange thing about this twisted sport is that despite its popularity in Pakistan, no one seems to understand the entirety of its rules. All that is established is that the men involved should keep slapping each other either on the face or the chest until they tap out or until a victor is determined.

Watch | Videos of 'slap kabaddi' from Pakistan are going viral. But what is this sport?

An absolutely terrifying video surfaced online that shows a shark swimming casually around people on Florida’s Navarre Beach. In the 56-second clip, families can be seen enjoying at the American beach when a shark came near to the crowd by flapping its fins and tail near the shore. As soon as beachgoers noticed the shark, they run to seek shelter.

The video was shared on Twitter by WCCB reporter Kaitlin Wright. It was originally uploaded by Cristy Cox, who told Pensacola Journal, “It all happened so fast! A dolphin was actually side by side with the shark at first and then just disappeared.”

Watch | Shark casually swims with beachgoers in US, video goes viral

Covid-19 has transformed the way we used to live our lives; it has divided our timeline into pre- and post-Covid-19 eras. One thing that has changed drastically is our work culture. Working six days per week to five days per week, and working from home during the pandemic has made us all realise that work culture can be altered as per changing times and that nothing is rigid.

With major companies like Amazon, Disney, Salesforce, and Meta trying to call their employees back to office, the corporate world is grappling with a big question: Are we ever returning to the office five days a week?

A few companies already started a four-day work week for their employees, with increased working hours from 8 hours a day to 12 hours per day on working days.

A report published by Business Insider last year quoted Steven Roth, the chairman of Vornado, one of New York’s biggest private landlords, as saying that Mondays in the office are “touch-and-go” and Fridays are likely “dead forever”.

Meanwhile, a report from Placer.ai, a firm that tracks mobile-phone data from 800 sites across the US, found that those who come to the office are indeed more likely to do so in the middle of the week. They appear to be avoiding the workplace on Mondays and Fridays, according to the data.

No working Mondays and Fridays?

The Business Insider started a poll on LinkedIn, to see if people agreed with the stats. It asked in the poll, “Given the choice, do you go to the office on Mondays and Fridays?” with three options:

Yes, Mondays and Fridays

No, either Mondays or Fridays

No, neither day

As of Monday, just over 16,000 people had already responded, and the results validate Roth’s contention and the Placer.ai data. Though this was not a scientific method, of course, it provided an interesting insight into what people actually think.

A little less than half of the respondents said they wouldn't go to the office on Mondays and Fridays. Another 29 per cent said they would go either on Monday or Friday, but not both. And only 22 per cent said that given the choice they would go both Mondays and Fridays.

An academic administrator wrote on Insider’s LinkedIn post telling why he wants to work on Friday and Monday, “the commute is easier on both days because fewer people work those days, it's more peaceful in coffee shops as well."

And an academic based in the UK agreed on the ease of a Friday commute, "Love working Fridays ... nice and quiet and commute is easy. Also a sense of relaxation as the weekend approaches," he wrote. "Hate Monday working though, for the converse reasons."

Also Read | Watch | Videos of 'slap kabaddi' from Pakistan are going viral. But what is this sport? It asked in the poll, “Given the choice, do you go to the office on Mondays and Fridays?” with three options: Yes, Mondays and Fridays No, either Mondays or Fridays No, neither day As of Monday, just over 16,000 people had already responded, and the results validate Roth’s contention and the Placer.ai data. Though this was not a scientific method, of course, it provided an interesting insight into what people actually think. The instant-messaging app, WhatsApp started testing the option to send high-definition (HD) photos to beta testers using Android and iOS. Now, WhatsApp is testing the ability to send HD videos, which is only available to a select group of Android users in beta. Till now the Meta-owned platform allowed users to share videos in reduced or compressed sizes (data compression) for faster and better operations.

According to WABetaInfo, the platform is now launching a new feature, which will allow users to send high-definition (HD) videos.

WhatsApp high-quality videos: How does this feature work?

According to the report, WhatsApp will add a button to the drawing editor that would allow users to share high-quality movies while keeping video resolution settings. The platform would continue to use compressions, which implies that video quality will not be HD but will still be greater than the current level.

The report also claims that the platform will default to the normal setting, requiring users to actively select the high-quality option each time they share a video.

By default, WhatsApp compresses videos to standard quality. However, you can choose to send them in higher quality with the HD option, which slightly compresses the video. Although the HD version will not be the original quality, it will still provide a much better viewing experience. For instance, the standard quality is 416 x 880 pixels and 6.3MB, while the HD quality is 608 x 1296 pixels and 12MB.

When sending videos on WhatsApp, the default video quality will likely remain SD. To send videos in HD, you will need to manually select the HD option, just like when sending HD photos.

“HD quality is clearer. The standard quality uses less storage space and is faster to send,” reads the description while sending videos on WhatsApp.

When is the new feature rolling out?

This functionality is now being rolled out to a small group of beta users who have downloaded Android version 2.23.14.10 from the Google PlayStore. However, with the next update, the feature is expected to be made available to all users.

Odisha train tragedy: Centre compromised on safety, alleges Congress

In the past decade, drones have revolutionised almost every space, from military aviation to commercial uses like photography and videography. Their shortcomings, like any other machine, followed by better-updated versions, made the use of drones inevitable in the near future. One such drawback in the usage of drones was that they can tolerate only a certain temperature, rendering them unsuitable for use in several operations, particularly hazardous ones where it would have been very useful and helped save lives and valuable material.

Suppose a building is on fire, with flames coming out of the windows and doors. As the firefighters arrive at the scene, no one knows who is left inside, the layout of the building, the availability of emergency exists and which areas are still safe. To go inside a building with a huge fire can even put firefighters at risk. In such cases, a drone can be of great functionality provided it can withstand extremely high temperatures.

Under a joint project, the Imperial College London and Empa, the material science unit of Swiss Federal Laboratories, have developed a remotely controlled flyer that is capable of enduring the temperatures of a gas flame, simulating the conditions of a forest fire or building-based disaster.

FireDrone: Helping hand of firefighters?

The prototype drone, called FireDrone, could be flown into burning buildings or woodland to assess the hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones. The data would then be sent to first responders to help them in emergency response.

Principal Investigator Professor Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London and Head of the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics at Empa, said: “Until they enter the danger zone, firefighters can’t be certain of what or who they’ll find, and what challenges they’ll encounter.

“FireDrone could be sent in ahead to gather crucial information – noting trapped people, building layouts, unexpected hazards – so that responders can prepare accordingly to keep themselves safe and potentially save more lives."

Nature-inspired FireDrones

In the past, drones have been used in firefighting to take aerial footage, host dire hoses up skyscrapers, or drop fire retardants in remote areas to slow the spread of wildfires. However, current drones developed for firefighting are unable to fly much closer to burning material as their frames start to melt and their electronics fail.

To find a solution to this problem, researchers looked to nature for inspiration to devise a means of maintaining a functioning internal temperature in extreme conditions.

“Deploying robots in extreme environments provides great benefits to reducing risks to human lives, and who better to look to than animals that have evolved their own ways of adapting to these extremes using inspiration from how animals keep cool in the heat,” said Kovac.

Animals like penguins, arctic foxes, and spittlebugs, which live in extreme temperatures, have appropriate layers of fat and fur. Some animals even produce their own layers of thermo-regulating material that allow them to thrive in extreme conditions.

To create a fire-resistant drone, researchers use the same concept and created a protective structural shell made of lightweight, thermally super-insulating materials like glass fibres and polyimide aerogel. They also coated this with super-reflecting aluminium to reflect heat.

Within the protective exoskeleton, the researchers placed temperature-sensitive components, such as regular and infrared cameras, CO2 sensors, video transmitters, flight controllers, batteries, and radio receivers. They also used the release and evaporation of gas from the CO2 sensors to build a cooling system to keep temperatures down.

Pilot flight of FireDrone

The researchers flew the drone in temperature-controlled chambers before exposing it to open flames at a firefighter training facility, showing that it could tolerate temperatures of up to 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes.

Cold temperatures can be just as punishing for electronics, so the team took to a glacier tunnel in Switzerland to test performance in an icy environment. The insulation kept the extreme cold from penetrating the components, while the heat generated by the whirring motors and electronics kept the batteries within their operating range.

The tests confirmed FireDrone’s potential to withstand dangerously hot and cold situations, but it is just a prototype so far. Before the drone can zoom into burning buildings, and search freezing crevasses for injured ice climbers, the team hopes to improve its versatility and equip it with additional sensors so it can feed more essential information back.

“The application of drones is often limited by environmental factors like temperature. We demonstrate a way to overcome this and are convinced our findings will help to unleash the future power of drones for extreme environments,” said Kovac.
