7 Books That Will Make You Fall in Love With the Antagonist

Amy Dunne is manipulative and deeply flawed, but her intelligence and complex motivations make her an antagonist readers can’t help but be fascinated by. Her perspective and actions reveal a dark, yet irresistible charm.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

As Dorian descends into moral corruption, his beauty and charm mask the horrors of his soul. Wilde's writing makes Dorian both tragic and alluring, drawing readers to sympathize with his internal conflict.

Heathcliff is a tortured soul whose love for Catherine Earnshaw drives him to commit acts of cruelty. Despite his vengeful nature, many readers find his passionate and tormented personality captivating.

While Achilles is not a traditional villain, his arrogance and tragic flaws often make him the antagonist of his own story. His fierce love for Patroclus and ultimate downfall make readers empathise with his pain, despite his darker tendencies.

In this tale of superpowers and revenge, both Victor and Eli are anti-heroes with dark ambitions. Schwab's writing paints their rivalry in such a way that you find yourself rooting for both, even as they become increasingly dangerous.

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

Erik, the Phantom, is disfigured and filled with a sense of loneliness and longing for love. His tragic backstory and passion for Christine make him both terrifying and deeply sympathetic, stirring a conflicted sense of attraction.

Henry is cold, calculating, and morally ambiguous, yet his intellect and enigmatic presence pull readers in. His complex relationships with the other characters add layers of intrigue to his darker decisions.

7 Things Introverts Do That Seem Weird To Others

After a social event, introverts often crave solitude to recharge. To others, this might seem like they didn’t enjoy the event or don’t like socialising, but they need time to recover their energy.

Introverts tend to pause and think before they speak. This can make them seem distant or overly cautious, but they like to process their thoughts fully before sharing.

Activities like reading, walking alone, or leisurely in nature are introverts' go-to relaxation methods. Some might view this as antisocial behaviour, but it’s how they unwind.

Introverts often take on the role of the observer in groups, quietly watching and listening before contributing. This can be mistaken for disinterest, though they are often deeply engaged.

They might decline invitations more frequently than extroverts, which could be misinterpreted as them not wanting to spend time with others. However, introverts often have to carefully manage their social energy.

Many introverts find phone calls draining and prefer texting or other non-immediate forms of communication. Ignoring a call doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk; they may need to mentally prepare for it.

Introverts usually feel more comfortable in one-on-one or small group settings than in large groups. This preference might seem odd to those who thrive in big gatherings, but introverts value deeper connections.

Here are seven things introverts often do that may seem weird to others but are perfectly normal.

A couple from Australia’s Melbourne is facing the heat for causing floods in the city’s rail loop when they were identified in CCTV footage last week. The pair, being called an “amorous couple in a stairwell” was all over the Australian media, at the same time when Olivia Rodrigo was in the city for her concert.

Two stations, heavily packed with commuters, had to be evacuated, which caused significant delays for people travelling from the Olivia Rodrigo concert. Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations had to be evacuated late on Thursday evening, causing delays across the metropolitan rail network.

Initially, it was believed the incident was actually an act of vandalism, said Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister, Danny Pearson. Later on, after carefully examining the CCTV, it appears that “an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged a sprinkler,” Pearson told reporters outside parliament on Wednesday.

“There was extensive flooding. Metro will be investigating these matters further and police are investigating.”

“Perhaps a stairwell may not be an appropriate place to find yourself in after dinner.”

Police on Tuesday released the images of the couple - a man and a woman, who they said may be able to assist with their investigation into the incident, which the police term as offence of “criminal damage.”

Victoria Police said the offenders had fled the scene after the extensive flooding.

"The delays affected big crowds trying to get home from the Olivia Rodrigo concert at Rod Laver Arena," police said.

"At this stage, it is unclear if Miss Rodrigo planned to get home via train or limousine," they said at the time.

Chennai rain update: Incessant rains cause severe waterlogging across Chennai | Video

Few organisms produce blue pigments naturally. While many species have evolved pigments for green, yellow and red, true blue pigments are rare because of the chemical complexity required to produce them.

Many animals and plants that appear blue, such as butterflies and flowers, don’t have blue pigments. Instead, their colour comes from the microscopic structures that scatter light to reflect only blue wavelengths, called structural colouration.

Producing blue pigments is energetically expensive for living organisms. Evolution tends to favour easier and more energy-efficient methods, which is why organisms have developed other ways, like structural colouration, to appear blue.

The blue end of the light spectrum has shorter wavelengths, which are less commonly absorbed by biological materials, making it more difficult for natural substances to appear blue compared to longer wavelengths like reds and yellows.

In many environments, blue may not have been an advantageous colour for survival. Green, brown, and other earthy tones tend to provide better camouflage for many species, making blue less favoured in natural selection.

Why Blue Colour Is So Rare In Nature?

How to Make Wholegrain Brown Rice Cakes at Home

Making whole-grain brown rice cakes at home is simple and can be a healthy snack option. Here's a basic recipe for homemade brown rice cakes:

Cook 1 cup of brown rice with 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil, lower the heat and simmer for 40-45 minutes until soft and sticky. Let the rice cool completely so it is easy to handle.

Once the rice is cool, transfer it to a bowl. Season with sesame seeds or spices for added flavour. Mix the rice well so that it holds together.

Wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking. Take small amounts of the rice mixture and shape it into flat round cakes. If you want perfectly round cakes, you can use a cookie cutter or a small mould.

Place the shaped rice cakes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake them in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, then flip them over and bake until they become firm and slightly crispy.

Let the rice cakes cool down to harden further. Once cooled, they’ll be crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

In an endearing tale from India’s Kerala, a UAE-based billionaire came forward to help a woman from his native place. The Lulu Group chairman MA Yusuff Ali repaid the Rs 8 lakh loan of a Kerala woman, who was evicted from her house due to an unpaid loan.

Ali not only repaid the entire loan amount but also instructed his team back in India to offer her Rs 10 lakh. The story of Sandhya being thrown off her house made local news and moved thousands of people who could identify her plight. It was then, that the story reached Lulu Group’s chairman and he provided Sandhya with assistance.

According to local media, Sandhya and her husband took a loan from a private institution in 2019 for the construction of their home in North Paravur, Kerala. The couple took a loan of Rs 4 lakh from Manappuram Finance, a Kerala-based Non Banking Finance Company (NBFC).

However, in 2021, things didn’t go well between Sandhya and her husband, and the latter left her and their two children. The repayment of the loan stopped thereafter. Gradually, the loan amount spiralled to nearly Rs 8 lakh with interest.

Manappuram Finance started foreclosure proceedings after the repayments stopped. The NBFC said that Sandhya had been given four warnings after loan repayments stopped three years ago.

Recently, when Sandhya returned to her home, she was shell-shocked to find that NBFC officials had entered her house and replaced her locks, officially evicting her and her two children. They did not even allow Sanhdya to take their belongings from inside the house.

The plight of Sandhya and her children, stranded on the road sparked outrage among locals. Her story was soon picked up by local media and reached MA Yusuff Ali, the chairman of Lulu Group, who immediately stepped in to help the family.

According to One India, Yusuff Ali instructed his team to repay the loan and it was due to his intervention that the keys to Sandhya’s house were returned.

Lulu Group's media coordinator Swaraj handed over the keys to Sandhya and also provided her with Rs 10 lakh to start a fixed deposit.

Sandhya expressed her gratitude to the billionaire, saying that she and her children would have been in a dire state had it not been for Yusuff Ali.

Prague, the Czech capital, has banned night-time pub crawls organised by travel agencies in a bid to attract "more cultured" tourists. The city councillors took this decision on October 14 to keep noisy travellers, mostly from Britain, away from the capital city.

Prague deputy mayor Zdenek Hrib told reporters on Monday that organised night-time pub crawls would now be banned.

"It will not be possible to have guided tours between 10 pm and 6 am," he added.

Jiri Pospisil, another deputy mayor, said Prague city hall was "seeking a more cultured, wealthier tourist … not one who comes for a short time only to get drunk."

Cheap beer and thirsty crowds

Prague, a city of 1.3 million people, has for a long time been popular for noisy stag parties and pub crawlers, attracting foreign beer lovers each year. These tourists have helped the Czech Republic keep its position as the world’s thirstiest nation.

As per 2023 data, 128 litres of beer was drunk per head of population in the country, despite a steady decline in footfall since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

In the Czech Republic, beer is still cheaper than water in some restaurants, and many pubs in the UNESCO-listed historic centre offer the renowned local lager for less than €3 a pint.

Vaclav Starek, the head of the Czech Association of Hotels and Restaurants, hailed the city hall’s decision.

“Trips to the centre in search of beer have been a problem for local people and for other tourists too,” he told AFP. “I don’t think this will hurt our sales. Nobody will be banned from going to a pub but these nightly organised pub crawls … are nothing we would need.”

Not the first European city with such a ban

Prague is not the first European capital to discourage a certain type of tourists from visiting. Last year, Amsterdam launched an ad campaign of “stay away” specifically aimed at young British men that triggered when people in Britain enter terms into search engines such as "stag party Amsterdam", "cheap hotel Amsterdam" and "pub crawl Amsterdam".

The ads describe the risks and consequences of excessive alcohol and drug taking: fines, a criminal record, hospitalisation and permanent health damage.

Other European cities have also introduced such measures to deter mass tourism. Like Venice, which limited its tour group sizes and banned loudspeakers, and Barcelona, which has said it will ban apartment rentals to tourists by 2028.

October’s full moon is going to be a special one, especially for all Selenophiles it will be a treat to the eyes. The full moon event for this month is due on October 17 and is also known as Hunter’s Moon. What makes this moon stand out is its appearance, which will be closer than any other moon this year.

Hunter’s moon also happens to be the largest supermoon, and this time it will be bigger and brighter than an average moon. This will be the third of four consecutive supermoons (and the brightest by a tiny margin), confirms NASA.

A supermoon is when the Moon appears bigger than usual. This occurs because the Moon's orbit around Earth isn't a perfect circle: it's an elliptical or egg-shaped orbit.

The Moon doesn't change size, it just looks bigger when is closer.

October’s full moon: Time, date and more

October’s full moon will make its appearance on Thursday morning (Oct 17) at 7:26 am EDT. This will be late Wednesday night for the International Date Line (IDL) West time zone and early Friday morning from New Zealand Time eastwards to the IDL.

In India, the full moon will appear at 4:26 am IST on Thursday morning. The moon will appear for about three days around this time, from Tuesday evening through Friday morning.

Why is it called Hunter’s Moon?

The full moon of each month has a unique name that differentiates it from other moons; likewise, October’s full moon has the name of Hunter’s moon.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the month of October is considered the best time to hunt with leaves falling off and the deer fattened. Since the harvesters have reaped fields, hunters can easily see the animals that have come out to glean.

The Maine Farmer's Almanac first published Native American names for the full Moons in the 1930s. Over time these names have become widely known and used.

What’s so special about this full moon?

This celestial phenomenon symbolizes the change of seasons. Historically, this time of year marked the period when tribes would stock up on meat for the approaching winter. The name Hunter’s Moon also reflects the practice of hunting and gathering during this season.

For Hindus, this is Sharad Purnima, also known as Kumara Purnima, Kojagari Purnima, Navanna Purnima Kojagrat Purnima, or Kaumudi Purnima. This is a harvest festival celebrated in a variety of ways.
