In the latest move to shed away the colonial past of the Indian judiciary, the Supreme Court of India unveiled a new Lady Justice statue in its library. The new figurine had undergone major symbolic changes, including the removal of her blindfold, representing that the law is not blind.

Some welcomed this move, while others criticised it, questioning whether this move represents a break from impartiality.

If you look at the traditional figure of Lady Justice, it is represented with a blindfold, robe and sword. This has its deep roots in ancient Greek and Roman iconography.

In ancient Greece, the goddess Themis was often portrayed holding scales and a sword, symbolising divine law and justice. Similarly, in Roman mythology, the figurine of Lady Justice was inspired by Justitia, their goddess of justice.

In India, the same statute is used to symbolise equality before the law, ensuring that justice is served without any partiality or prejudice to wealth, status or influence. It is from the blindfold that Indian courts got the saying "Law is blind," when it comes to prejudices.

The sword represents the authority of the law and its double edge signifies that justice is capable of both protecting and punishing. The scales represented balance and fairness which emphasise that courts weigh both sides of an argument before delivering a judgement.

It was when India was under British rule that the Lady Justice became part of the Indian Judicial system. Since then, it has become an indispensable symbol of the judicial system.

Now, a major change was made to this symbol by removing the blindfold and also replacing the sword with the Indian Constitution. The Lady Justice statue has also seen a transformation in its attire- from western robes to traditional Indian sarees.

Netizens react to new Lady Justice statue

The new statue also drew mixed reactions on social media.

One user wrote, “The thing Lady Justice needs the most is a watch,” likely referring to delays in the Indian judicial system.

Another user pointed out that removing the blindfold reflected “tremendous self-awareness,” adding that the law in India is “anything but impartial.”

Another user argued, "It was never blind.... It meant law will not be bias on any caste, religion and gender before serving justice.”

Some even gave suggestions like, "Put blindfold on judge eyes for fair judgment."

However, many were disappointed by the mere optics. "Yet law has failed to provide justice in many cases going on from the past months and years. Blindfolded or not, hardly matters!" said one user.

Social media erupts after India's Supreme Court changes the look of Lady Justice statue

An unidentified firm fell prey to a North Korean cyber criminal who got hired as a remote IT worker and hacked the company's system, the BBC reported. The company which is based in the UK, US and Australia did not want to be named.

The company hired the North Korean technician online, who faked his employment history and personal details.

Once given access to the company’s computer network, the hacker downloaded sensitive data and sent a ransom demand.

This is the latest case in a series of such cyber crimes where a North Korean has been masked as western remote worker.

The firm allowed cyber responders from SecureWorks to report the hack to spread awareness and warn others. Secureworks said the IT worker, thought to be a man, was hired in the summer as a contractor. He used the firm’s remote working tools to log into the corporate network.

He then downloaded as much company data as possible as soon as he had gained access to internal systems. The man worked with the firm for four months and even collected his salary.

Researchers say this was likely redirected to North Korea in a complex laundering process to evade western sanctions on the country.

The Australian government lowered the age of criminal responsibility once again in the country’s Northern Territory (NT), which will include the imprisonment of children as young as 10.

Australian states and territories have been under pressure to raise the age from 10 to 14 just like other developed countries but the NT government deemed its decision necessary to reduce youth crime rates. Last year the government in NT became the first jurisdiction to lift the threshold to 12 years, but the new County Liberal Party (CLP) elected in August made a U-turn from the previous decision.

The CLP has argued that returning the age to 10 will ultimately protect children- despite doctors, human rights organisations and Indigenous groups saying otherwise.

Various organisations have cited evidence that the laws will not reduce crime and will disproportionately affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The NT already jails children at a rate 11 times higher than any other jurisdiction in the country, and almost all of them are Aboriginal.

Youth crime crisis in Australia

Australia has declared many places in the country are in the grip of a youth crime crisis. A series of violent incidents that happened this year even prompted several youth curfews in the NT city of Alice Springs.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said her government had been given a mandate after their landslide election victory, and that the change of age to 10 would allow courts to put young offenders through programmes designed to address the root causes of their crimes. Statistics show break-in and assault offences as the most common crimes.

"We have this obligation to the child who has been let down in several ways, over a long period," she told the parliament on Thursday.

"We make no apologies for delivering on our commitments to reduce crime for all Territorians," Finocchiaro added.

On the other hand, research both globally and in Australia has shown that imprisoning young children makes them more likely to offend and often has dire impacts on their health, education and employment.

Opposition Leader Selena Uibo, who is the first and only Aboriginal woman to head a major party in Australia, said it was a "dark day" for the territory.

Pakistan: Violent protests erupt in Lahore over on-campus 'rape' of college student | Here's what happened

If someone’s story changes frequently or they can’t keep details straight, it’s often a sign that they are fabricating information or trying to remember their own lies.

Liars often avoid eye contact because they feel uncomfortable, though some may overcompensate by holding eye contact too long to seem sincere. The key is abnormal eye behaviour that differs from their usual demeanour.

Their words might say one thing, but their body tells a different story. For example, they may shake their head 'no' while verbally saying 'yes.' Watch for subtle signs like fidgeting, crossing arms or shifting feet.

Someone lying might provide either overly detailed information to convince you (making up extra parts of the story) or give vague responses to avoid being caught in a lie.

Liars may experience shifts in pitch, tone or speed of speech due to nervousness. They may stammer, clear their throat often, or speak in a higher-pitched voice when lying.

When someone is lying and feels cornered, they might get overly defensive or aggressive. They may lash out with accusations or attempt to turn the tables on you to divert suspicion.

6 Telltale Signs Someone is Lying to You

Water is vital for survival. Knowing how to locate water sources such as streams and rivers, and how to purify water (using methods like boiling, and filtration) is critical to avoid dehydration.

A shelter protects you from harsh weather conditions and helps maintain body heat. Simple shelters can be made from natural materials like branches, leaves, or snow, or with tarps and ropes if available.

Fire provides warmth, a way to cook food, purify water and signal for help. Learn different fire-starting methods, including using a lighter, matches, a fire starter, or even primitive methods like flint and steel.

Getting lost is common in survival situations. Learning to use natural navigation tools such as the sun, stars and landmarks, or reading a map and compass, can help you find your way back to safety.

In an emergency, knowing which plants are edible or medicinal can help sustain you. However, always be cautious of poisonous plants, and learn key plants in the area you frequent.

If you're lost or in distress, you'll need to alert rescuers to your location. Learn how to create visual signals like large fires, and ground symbols (SOS), or use mirrors, whistles, or radios to attract attention.

In survival situations, panic can lead to poor decisions. Staying calm, assessing your situation and maintaining a positive mindset increases your chances of surviving and making sound decisions.

7 Survival Skills Everyone Should Know

Why Do You Feel Tired All The Time, as per Science

Feeling tired all the time, or experiencing chronic fatigue, can stem from a variety of physiological, psychological and lifestyle factors. According to science, here are some common reasons:

Not getting enough sleep or poor-quality sleep, can lead to chronic fatigue. Conditions like insomnia, sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome can disrupt sleep cycles and leave you feeling tired despite spending enough time in bed.

Low levels of certain nutrients like iron (leading to anaemia), vitamin D, vitamin B12, and magnesium can cause fatigue. Inadequate water intake can also reduce energy levels, as water is essential for various body functions.

Surprisingly, a lack of physical activity can make you feel more tired. Regular exercise helps improve energy levels, endurance, and overall well-being.

Chronic stress and anxiety can drain your energy and disrupt sleep, leading to persistent fatigue. Fatigue is a common symptom of depression, where even simple daily tasks can feel exhausting.

Reduced heart function can lead to fatigue as the body isn’t getting enough oxygenated blood to maintain energy levels. Persistent infections, such as mononucleosis or post-viral fatigue, can also leave you feeling tired even after recovery.

Certain medications, such as antihistamines, antidepressants, or beta-blockers, can cause drowsiness or fatigue.

Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus cause chronic inflammation, which can contribute to fatigue by affecting energy levels and body systems.

7 Signs You're a People Pleaser, as per Psychology

People-pleasers often find it hard to decline requests or say no to others, even when it inconveniences them.

They constantly seek approval and validation from others, often at the expense of their own needs and desires.

They tend to avoid conflict and disagreements, sometimes by suppressing their own feelings or opinions.

People-pleasers often overcommit themselves to tasks or favours, feeling obligated to help or support others.

They may prioritize others' needs over their own, neglecting self-care or personal boundaries.

They often feel guilty when they assert themselves or prioritize their own needs.

People-pleasers tend to apologize frequently, even for things that are not their fault, to maintain harmony.

There’s one thing to be lonely, celebrating it in the name of the culture of a country in another, and this is what Japan’s Bocchi culture is all about. Bocchi, a Japanese slang expression for aloneness or loneliness have become quite famous in Japan for people to poke fun at themselves, express a sense of isolation, or a little of both.

Japan widely allows bocchi culture, which simply means living and eating alone. Some restaurants in the country are even designed for eating in silence. There are even various forms of entertainment that seek to replace real social connections with paid or virtual substitutes.

Unlikely, warn scientists who see longevity falling in areas known for centenarians

People in Japan, especially nature lovers seem to embrace the bocchi lifestyle with pride. But this strange amusing way to loneliness is the epidemic of loneliness affecting up to 40 per cent of Japanese people.

What is Japan’s bocchi culture?

The word bocchi is short for hitoribocchi, from hitori (one person) and bocchi, a word derived from another Japanese word houshi (Buddhist priest). While these origins seem to have some Zen connotations, the modern-day word has an essence that is a more pathetic kind of loneliness.

Bocchi can be used to express sadness about being alone, but it can also be used in a humorous, self-deprecating way. The word can be used with many other words to form humours expressions like bocchi meshi (eating alone), bocchi ramen (eating ramen alone) and similar foodie examples that are especially popular.

One popular example of bocchi’s more tongue-in-cheek usage is the term kuribocchi. The kuri is short for kurisumasu (Christmas).

In Japan, Christmas is not a day traditionally spent with family, but a romantic holiday similar to Valentine’s Day. So referring to oneself as kuribocchi is a way of highlighting that you are dateless or single on this day of love.

How does Japan enable bocchi lifestyle?

Japan’s loneliness is no joke. The number of lonely deaths in elderly people is a staggering 68,000 each year. To address these troubling statistics, the Japanese government appointed its first Minister of Loneliness in 2021. But, on the other hand, several aspects of Japanese culture and infrastructure support and enable a solitary way of life.

In Japanese cities, single people tend to live alone, including university students. Sharing a home with a friend or housemate is unusual in the country, and living with a partner before marriage is much less common. But loners in Japan are well-catered to in daily life, instead of being asked to share their lives with someone.

Most restaurant chains offer plenty of single-occupant counter seats, while private internet and manga cafe rooms are designed with individual customers in mind. The country’s infamous host and hostess bars also provide paid company in the absence of a genuine date.

Many forms of Japanese entertainment are also designed to appeal to lonely consumers. The Japanese idol industry encourages para-social relationships between artists and fans. Online games known as dating sims, in which the player aims to woo a virtual love interest, are popular for both men and women.

There’s one thing to be lonely, celebrating it in the name of the culture of a country in another, and this is what Japan’s Bocchi culture is all about. Also Read | Will you live beyond 100? Unlikely, warn scientists who see longevity falling in areas known for centenarians People in Japan, especially nature lovers seem to embrace the bocchi lifestyle with pride. Also Read | Therapy for children? Why early conversation around mental health is important One popular example of bocchi’s more tongue-in-cheek usage is the term kuribocchi. Also Read | What are ADHD and adult ADHD? Health care experts warn against self-diagnosis Most restaurant chains offer plenty of single-occupant counter seats, while private internet and manga cafe rooms are designed with individual customers in mind. It can be concluded that these trends might encourage isolation for individuals who aren’t otherwise socially outgoing. (With inputs from agencies)

Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna? Next Chief Justice of India to succeed CJI Chandrachud

The archaic Lady Justice statue in the Supreme Court of India has been replaced with a new one without a blindfold. The new statue has shed its blindfold, symbolising that law in India is not blind. The sword in one hand of the statue has also been replaced with the Constitution of India, as per Indian media reports.

The statue was commissioned at the orders of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to represent equality before the law.

For decades, the Lady Justice statue has been depicted as a woman wearing a white saree, her eyes blindfolded, holding a scale and a sword. The blindfold was meant to represent equality before the law, implying that justice should be delivered without regard to wealth, power, or status.

The scales represented balance and fairness, while the sword was meant to represent the power of the law.

With the new statue, however, an attempt is being made to shed the colonial legacy behind emphasising the message that law is not blind in new India. It now stands tall at the judges’ library in the Supreme Court.

Take a look at the new statue below:

As per top sources associated with the Chief Justice's office, quoted by NDTV, Justice Chandrachud believes that the law is not blind and sees everyone equally.

"Therefore, the Chief Justice said that the form of the Lady of Justice should be changed. He said the statue should have the Constitution in one hand and not a sword so that a message goes out to the country that she dispenses justice according to the Constitution. The sword symbolises violence, but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws," a source told the publication.

The only symbol retained in the new statute is that of the scales, to emphasise that the courts weigh both sides of an argument before delivering a judgement.

The Lady Justice is an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems. Its origin can be found in the Roman art known as Justitia, which is the personification of Justice in ancient Rome, equivalent to the Greek goddess Dike/Astraea.
