US elections 2024: The 2024 elections in the United States are scheduled to be held on November 5 (Tuesday), and the country is bracing up for one of the closest contests in its history between candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

The winner of this election will serve four years in the White House starting from their inauguration on 20 Jan 2025.

Approximately 244 million people are eligible to vote in the upcoming US presidential election next month. But how does the US vote? Here is a comprehensive guide on several eligibility requirements for the US presidential elections:

US elections 2024: Eligibility to vote in US

Voting in the US presidential elections is a fundamental right for all American citizens, but there are some specific eligibility criteria on age, citizenship and residency requirements:

1. Age Requirement

To vote in a US presidential election, you must be at least 18 years old on or before the election day. Some states allow 17-year-olds to vote in primary elections if they will turn 18 by the general election.

2. Citizenship Requirement

You must be a US citizen to vote in all federal elections, including the presidential election. This includes:

- Natural-born citizens: born in the US or born abroad to US citizen parents

- Naturalized citizens: those who became US citizens through the naturalization process

However, non-citizens, including permanent residents (green card holders), visa holders, or undocumented immigrants, are not eligible to vote in US presidential elections.

3. Residency Requirement

To vote, you must be a resident of the state where you're registered to vote. Each state sets its own rules for how long you must have lived in the state before you can vote. Some common rules include:

- A specific minimum period of residency (varies from 10 to 30 days before election day in most states)

- You must vote in the jurisdiction (city, county, precinct) where you reside.

- If you move to a new state, you will likely need to register to vote in that state and meet its residency requirements.

4. Registration Requirement

In most states, you must register to vote before election day. Some states allow same-day voter registration, while others have cut-off dates before the election.

Some states automatically register citizens when they interact with state agencies (like getting a driver's licence).

5. Other Requirements

Mental Competence: In some states, individuals who are declared mentally incompetent by a court are not eligible to vote.

Felony Convictions: Voting rights for convicted felons vary by state. Some states permanently bar felons from voting, while others restore voting rights after the sentence, parole, or probation completion.

6. Absentee and Early Voting

If you are a US citizen living abroad or unable to vote in person on a particular day of election (due to illness, disability, military service, etc.), you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot.

Similarly, many states offer early voting options to allow voters to cast their ballots before election day.

US elections: What is an exit poll?

An exit poll is a survey that determines how voters voted in an election and their reasons for doing so. It has two parts: early voting, which occurs in person in the weeks leading up to the election, and mail voting, which occurs on election day.

US election exit polls: What time do they come out?

Exit polls for the US presidential election will start to be reported after 5:00 pm ET. News organisations can release state-by-state information for all states but can't call a winner until all votes are counted in that state.

In battleground states, exit polls aren't used to predict outcomes until there are sufficient results.

What are the seven swing or battleground states in the US elections 2024?

The US elections have seven swing states, the ones that do not favour any one party over the other.

Arizona (Electoral Votes: 11)

Arizona has become a key battleground amid the national immigration and abortion access debates. The state recently saw heating debates over abortion access, highlighted by state Republicans' unsuccessful attempt to reinstate a near-total ban on abortions from 160 years ago.

Georgia (Electoral Votes: 16)

Georgia has a significant African-American population, making up about a third of its residents, which played a crucial role in Biden's victory in 2020. This demographic's support is believed to have been instrumental in flipping the state blue.

North Carolina (Electoral Votes: 16)

Since Harris took the lead on the Democratic ticket, polling in North Carolina has become more contested. This shift may influence Trump’s decision to hold his first outdoor rally there since the assassination attempt in July.

Pennsylvania (Electoral Votes: 19)

In the 2020 election, Pennsylvania played a key role in helping Joe Biden secure the presidency and reclaim the “blue wall.” Historically, Democratic candidates have had significant success in the state until Donald Trump's win in 2016.

Nevada (Electoral Votes: 6)

Despite having the fewest electoral votes among the seven swing states, Nevada remains crucial in presidential elections. Biden's 2020 victory was the fourth straight win for Democratic candidates in the Silver State.

Wisconsin (Electoral Votes: 10)

Analysts believe that third-party candidates could significantly influence outcomes in marginal states like Wisconsin, especially, as they campaign against the dominant two parties.

Michigan (Electoral votes: 15)

Michigan has largely leaned Democratic in recent decades, yet it has often served as a battleground. Alongside Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, it formed a “blue wall” for Biden in 2020.

US election 2024: When election results are expected?

In case Kamala Harris or Donald Trump win overwhelmingly, the result shall be clear within some hours. But in a tight competition, more time will elapse, and days or even weeks may pass.

In 2020, the result was called for Joe Biden four days after the November 3 ballot, after Pennsylvania’s result was confirmed. The state provided Biden with 20 Electoral College votes, taking him over the 270 required to win. In 2016, Hillary Clinton conceded to Trump the morning after the election.

A US woman is found guilty of second-degree murder of her boyfriend, after she allegedly left him zipped up in a suitcase to die in 2020, reported The Guardian.

Sarah Boone, 42, zipped her boyfriend Jorges Torres Jr. into a suitcase while playing hide-and-seek which led to Torres’ death due to suffocation. Boone told the Orange County sheriff’s office that she and her boyfriend were playing the game after consuming alcohol in February 2020.

As per Boone, her boyfriend Torres voluntarily got inside a suitcase and as they were joking, she zipped him in.

Later on, Boone alleged that Torres had abused her in the past. She decided to have a conversation with him while he was confined in the suitcase so that she could express her feelings, reported USA Today.

The video was aired in the courtroom and also featured Boone's boyfriend repeatedly saying that he couldn't breathe while she was laughing.

“That's what you do when you choke me” and “That's on you” were some of her responses as he kept calling for help.

Torres' autopsy report showed several injuries, including scratches on his back and neck, contusions to his shoulder, skull and forehead from blunt force trauma, as well as a cut near his busted lip, as per The Guardian report.

Delhi woke up to ‘very poor’ air quality on Monday (Oct 28), ahead of the Diwali week festivities. The national capital recorded a 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 264 at 6:00 am, though it was 90 points down from the previous day, still hazardous for health.

The air quality in the capital city for the last two days was worse than Monday; on October 28 the AQI had dropped vigorously due to lack of strong winds.

In Delhi’s Pitampura, the air quality index stood at 167 at 6:00 am, as shown by the data from the IQair website. In Defence Colony, the AQI was recorded at 324, indicating a rising trend in the pollution levels in the national capital.

The air quality is likely to get worse this week as Diwali celebrations will begin from Monday across the National Capital Region (NCR).

On Sunday, Delhi's air quality turned 'very poor' as calm winds prevented the dispersion of pollutants. Some areas in the national capital recorded 'severe' pollution levels.

Delhi's 24-hour average AQI was recorded at 355 at 4:00 pm as against 255 on Saturday, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed. Meanwhile, data from 37 of the city's 40 monitoring stations shared by the CPCB showed that three stations -- Bawana, Burari and Jahangirpuri -- recorded 'severe' air quality.

Tackling Delhi’s air quality

The upcoming winter season teamed up with Diwali festivities is a menace for the capital city’s already deteriorating air quality. To curb air pollution, the Delhi government has taken several steps including pushing for public transport, curbing dust pollution, and a firecracker ban during the festival season.

Another crucial action in this direction was to invoke the Centre’s emergency Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) when the air quality in Delhi-NCR is expected to decline in the winter months. At present, GRAP Stage II (when AQI is between 301 and 400) has been activated in Delhi by the Commission for Air Quality and Management (CAQM) since October 21.

In addition, all conventional firecrackers are banned in Delhi-NCR allowing only green crackers that do not use barium slats in their production, since 2020. However, due to the absence of distinction between a green cracker from a normal one, authorities have been imposing a blanket ban every winter since 2020.

What is the Ideal Time to Get Vitamin D From Sunlight

At this time, the sun is at its highest point, and UVB rays, which are responsible for vitamin D production, are strongest. For most people, adequate vitamin D levels are reached through regular incidental exposure to the sun.

Around 10-30 minutes of sun exposure is generally enough for most skin types, depending on skin tone, location, and time of year.

To produce vitamin D effectively, it's best to allow your skin to be exposed to sunlight without sunscreen for a short period.

Exposing larger areas of skin, such as arms, legs, or back, increases vitamin D synthesis. Even short bursts of exposure in these areas can help meet daily requirements.

Darker skin produces less vitamin D compared to lighter skin because it has more melanin. Older adults also tend to produce less vitamin D, so they may need more sun exposure to meet their needs.

Cyclone Dana updates: The Odisha coast is bracing for Cyclone Dana, which is expected to make landfall near the coastal state by October 25. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port on Friday.

The met department also said that the landfall process will start from the night of October 24 and will continue till the next day. The maximum speed during the landfall is expected to be around 120 kmph, IMD Mrutunjay Mohapatra said. Landfall is a gradual process which usually takes around 5-6 hours, he said further.

Meanwhile, more than 1.14 lakh people in West Bengal have already been moved to shelters as a precautionary measure.

Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who reviewed the state government's preparedness, said only 30 per cent of the people, or around 3-4 lakh people living in the identified ‘danger zone’, have been evacuated by Wednesday evening.

"The remaining people will be brought to safety by 11 am on Thursday," he said.

While asserting that the state is fully prepared to face the calamity, Majhi assured the people that they are in "safe hands".

"Do not panic and stay safe. You (people) are in safe hands," he said, adding that all arrangements have been made for the people at the cyclone shelters.

The new Lady Justice statue which among other changes does not feature blindfold inside the library of the Supreme Court of India didn’t sit well with the SC Bar Association (SCBA). The association has since questioned the rationale behind the changes made to the statute.

The SCBA passed a resolution against the changes made to the apex court’s emblem and the Lady Justice statue without consulting its members.

The new Lady Justice statue which was unveiled recently, was without the blindfold and the sword in hand of the traditional statue was replaced with the Indian constitution book.

If you look at the traditional figure of Lady Justice, it is represented with a blindfold, robe and sword. This has its deep roots in ancient Greek and Roman iconography.

However, the new statue is being seen as an attempt to leave the colonial legacy behind while underlining the message that the law is not blind in new India.

“It is observed by the Executive Committee of Supreme Court Bar Association that recently some radical changes have been brought in by the Supreme Court unilaterally like a change of its emblem, change in the statue of Lady Justice without consultation with the Bar. We are equal stakeholders in the administration of justice but these changes when proposed, were never brought to our attention. We are clueless on the rationale behind these changes,” the resolution reads.

The SCBA also objected to the proposed museum in the erstwhile judges’ library, claiming that it had previously requested a cafe-cum-lounge for its members, as the current cafeteria is inadequate to meet their needs.

“Now a museum has apparently been proposed in the erstwhile Judges Library whereas we had demanded a Library, Cafe cum Lounge for the members of the Bar as the present cafeteria is inadequate to cater to the needs of the members of the Bar. We are concerned that despite our objection raised against the proposed Museum in the erstwhile Judges library, work has started for the museum,” SCBA added in the resolution.

Norway is planning to increase the minimum age limit of using social media to 15 in a bid to safeguard children from the “power of the algorithms”, said the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on Wednesday (Oct 23).

The latest move is part of the Norwegian government’s campaign against tech giants, as it targets them for “pitting against small children’s brains.”

Gahr Store said on Wednesday that it will be “an uphill battle” for the government to go against these tech companies but politicians must intervene to protect children. The Labour leader further blamed social media platforms for misusing users’ data and making them “single-minded and pacified”.

The Scandinavian country already has a minimum age limit of 13 in place. Despite this, more than half of nine-year-olds, 58 per cent of 10-year-olds and 72 per cent of 11-year-olds are on social media, according to research by the Norwegian media authority.

The government will now enforce new age restrictions for children, amending the Personal Data Act, so that users must be 15 years old to agree that the platform can handle their personal data. An age verification barrier on social media will also be developed, as per reports.

“It sends quite a strong signal,” the prime minister told the newspaper VG on Wednesday. “Children must be protected from harmful content on social media.”

How to Identify Real Paneer From Synthetic One: 5 Simple Ways

Real paneer has a soft, crumbly texture when pressed, and breaks apart easily. Synthetic paneer may feel rubbery or excessively firm, bouncing back when pressed instead of crumbling.

Real paneer has a mild, fresh, and slightly milky aroma. On the other hand, synthetic paneer often has an unnatural or slightly chemical smell, sometimes resembling plastic.

Real paneer is typically off-white or cream-coloured, indicating natural milk fats. However, synthetic paneer may appear unnaturally white or too bright, which can be a sign of additives or bleaching agents.

Real paneer has a clean, fresh, and mildly milky flavour. But synthetic paneer might taste bland, have a soapy aftertaste, or lack the rich creaminess of genuine paneer.

When placed in hot water, the real paneer remains intact and softens slightly. But synthetic paneer may either break apart or remain overly firm and rubbery, indicating adulteration.
