Here’s everything you need to know about sepsis.

What is medical condition sepsis?

Sepsis occurs when our immune system reacts extremely to an infection. It leads to extensive inflammation in the whole body that can result in tissue damage, organ failure and even death. However, sometimes our immune system stops fighting the infection and starts damaging our normal tissues and organs.

At the same time, an abnormal chain reaction in our clotting system can cause blood clots to form in our blood vessels. This reduces blood flow to the different organs of our body and can cause significant damage or even failure, according to Healthline.

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), sepsis is one of the most frequent causes of death worldwide. From data published in 2020, there were 48.9 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths worldwide, representing 20 per cent of all global deaths.

Sepsis can be caused by any type of infection, including bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. Common sources include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, abdominal infections, and bloodstream infections.

Symptoms

WHO considered sepsis a medical emergency and people who think they may have sepsis should take medical care right away. Symptoms of sepsis include:

High or low body temperature

Rapid heart rate

Rapid breathing

Confusion or disorientation

Severe pain or discomfort

Low urine output

Who is at risk?

Anyone affected by an infection, severe injury, or serious non-communicable disease can progress to sepsis, but vulnerable populations are at higher risk, including:

Older persons

Pregnant or recently pregnant women

Neonates

Hospitalised patients

Patients in intensive care units

People with weakened immune systems (for example, HIV, cancer)

People with chronic medical conditions (for example, kidney disease, cirrhosis)

Treatment

Treatment for sepsis is most effective when started early. Doctors look for concerning signs and use tests to diagnose sepsis. They will try to find the source of infection. Early use of antimicrobials to treat bacteria, parasites, fungi, or viruses is essential for improving treatment outcomes.

Low blood pressure is treated by intravenous fluids and sometimes medicines called vasopressors, which can increase blood pressure.

Antibiotic resistance can make treatment more difficult. In extreme cases, surgery is done to remove damaged tissue.

US elections 2024: The Instagram-famous pet squirrel Peanut was euthanised on November 1 by New York wildlife officials and this soon became a campaign talking point, two days ahead of the US presidential election.

From Republicans Donald Trump, and JD Vance to Elon Musk and other supporters of Trump, everyone started slamming the Democrats for the euthanasia of the squirrel.

Trump’s vice presidential pick Vance said on Sunday (Nov 3) that Trump was “fired up” about Peanut’s death. He said this during a campaign rally in North Carolina’s Sanford.

Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya celebrated its eighth edition of Deepotsav on Wednesday (Oct 30) ahead of Diwali, with over 2.5 million diyas (earthen lamps) lit together in the holy city.

The Deepotsav event was first-of-its kind that also set two Guinness World Records- the most people performing ‘aarti’ simultaneously and the largest display of oil lamps. It was also first such celebration since the Ram Temple consecration in January 2022.

The two records were set on 55 ghats, including Ram ki Paidi, on the banks of the Saryu River with over 2.5 million diyas lit together and 1,121 ‘vedacharyas’ (teachers of religious texts) performing ‘aarti’ simultaneously. The number of diyas were counted using drones.

The little girl was conceived through IVF after her parents had waited 15 years for a child.

As per the complaint, Dilip allegedly grabbed a curtain rod and began assaulting his wife first. When the child tried to intervene, he allegedly struck her in the face and head with an iron table.

Nightmares are one of the most prevalent sleeping disorders in the world, the frequency of which increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, as several reports show. Now, it might be possible to tame these horrifying dreams using non-invasive techniques to manipulate our emotions, a new study shows.

A study conducted on 36 patients diagnosed with a nightmare disorder showed that a combination of two simple therapies can help reduce the frequency of these bad dreams to a large extent. The study was originally published in a Current Biology paper.

"There is a relationship between the types of emotions experienced in dreams and our emotional well-being," psychiatrist Lampros Perogamvros of the Geneva University Hospitals and the University of Geneva in Switzerland explained in 2022 when the results of the study were published.

"Based on this observation, we had the idea that we could help people by manipulating emotions in their dreams."

Taming nightmares with music and some manipulation of emotions

Many people globally suffer from nightmares, which are not just a few bad dreams. Nightmares are also associated with poor sleep quality, which then can lead to other health issues.

One reason for nightmares is poor sleep which can also increase anxiety, which in turn can result in insomnia. Hence, nightmares shouldn’t be ignored and must be dealt with at an early stage.

The two non-invasive methods introduced in the study were- imagery rehearsal therapy (IMT) and targeted memory reactivation (TMR).

In IMT, patients were asked to rewrite their most harrowing and frequent nightmares to give them a happy ending on paper and then “rehearse” that written story in their head, in an attempt to overwrite the nightmare.

This method helped to reduce the frequency and severity of nightmares, but the treatment is not effective for all patients.

To boost this method’s effectiveness, scientists introduced another method called- targeted memory reactivation (TMR). Based on a 2010 experiment, in this method, certain sounds associated with a certain stimulus are played while people are sleeping. It was observed that TMR helped in boosting the memory of that stimulus.

After having the study's participants complete a dream and sleep diary for two weeks, the volunteers were all given a single IRT session.

Half of the group underwent a TMR session, creating a link between a positive version of their nightmares and a sound. The other half served as a control group, imagining a less horrific version of a nightmare without being exposed to positive sounds.

At the start of the study, the control group had, on average, 2.58 nightmares per week, and the TMR group had an average of 2.94 weekly nightmares. By the end of the study, the control group was down to 1.02 weekly nightmares, while the TMR group had dropped to just 0.19. Even more promising, the TMR group reported an increase in happy dreams.

At the three-month follow-up, nightmares had risen slightly in both groups, to 1.48 and 0.33 per week respectively. However, that is still an impressive reduction in the frequency of nightmares, the researchers said, suggesting that using TMR to support IRT results in a more effective treatment.
