Hundreds of violent protesters stormed and ransacked the official residence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the leader fled to India in the hope of asylum on Monday (August 5). The protesters, in defiance to the military curfew imposed in the capital, walked into Gono Bhaban Palace and vandalised furniture, glass door panels, books and other items and expressed their anger against civil service job quotas recently announced by the government. Bangladesh saw visuals similar to what happened in their neighbouring country, Sri Lanka after its leader, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled from the country and the protesters swarmed inside the presidential palace to loot any valuable item lying in the country's most powerful house. The protesters also rampaged through symbols of Hasina's rule, including the busts of her father, the creator of Bangladesh, the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Scientists are stunned to find an iceberg - which is twice as big as Greater London - continuously spinning on one spot for the last eight months near Antarctica.

The world's largest iceberg A23a was caught in a massive rotating cylinder of water, which is called as Taylor Column, in December and since then has been rotating at nearly 15 degrees a day.

Because of this constant rotation, the massive frozen block has stopped from melting and fragmenting, said the scientists, while speaking to BBC and added that A23a has the chances of getting trapped in the vortex for years.

Bangladesh on August 5 saw a dramatic and unforeseen end of Sheikh Hasina's 20-year rule when the prime minister fled from the capital Dhaka to a "safer place" in a military chopper. Across the border, as Hasina landed in Agartala in India's Tripura state, celebratory jubilation took over Bangladesh as angry protesters stormed inside her Gono Bhaban Palace, vandalised furniture, glass door panels, books and other items and expressed their anger against civil service job quotas recently announced by the government.

Hasina again came to power in 2024 in what the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) denounced as a "dummy election". Before ensuring that she climbs the throne this time, Hasina fiercely appealed to her party leaders, “The hands that would be raised against us have to be broken.” On August 5, 2024, the hands that rose against Hasina's opposition-less democratic rule went beyond a visible count. These hands, on the back of the country's army, have now taken the power back in their grip to restore democracy - an initiative once vowed by Hasina herself.

Saturn kicks out a comet outside our solar system at a scary speed of 6,700 mph. Here's how

NASA issued a sudden warning after a massive 410-foot asteroid '2024 OC' was spotted hurtling towards Earth at a scary speed on August 4 (Sunday) to make its closest approach at 16:10 UTC.

The asteroid, which is as big as a large building, will fly by Earth at a dangerous speed of 35,986 km/h. Asteroid 2024 OC is part of the Apollo asteroids which have been making their closest approach to Earth recently.

These asteroids are near-Earth objects (NEOs) and have orbits that cross the path of the Earth. Although most NEOs do not carry the risk of impact, some of them are considered potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) and need closer monitoring.

The asteroids which are larger than about 460 feet (140 metres) and have orbits which bring them at a distance of 7.5 million kilometres from the orbit of the Earth are considered as potentially hazardous.

NASA is now running on a critical deadline of 19 days to bring back astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the ISS who are stuck in space because their Boeing Starliner spacecraft has encountered some technical issues.

There have been malfunctions in the thruster and helium system because of which their return has been delayed and now the 19-day deadline has emerged because the Crew-9 mission nears.

The engineers have been tirelessly working to resolve the issues along with considering the potential alternatives, including a SpaceX Dragon capsule, to ensure the safe return of the astronauts amidst a challenging mission.

The Starliner had docked at the ISS on June 13, 2024, and was earlier scheduled to make a comeback to Earth after completing a week-long mission.

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on June 5, 2024, in Florida.

How did the Starliner get stuck in space?

The aim of the mission was to test the Starliner in their first manned flight, which is a major milestone for the commercial crew programme of Boeing.

The spacecraft was able to dock with the ISS successfully, however, as it approached, five of its 28 thrusters had shut down unexpectedly.

Also, the engineers found five small helium leaks in the service module of the spacecraft. Because of these issues, the Starliner was not able to safely undock and return to Earth.

NASA and Boeing's engineers are now working continuously to solve the issues with the Starliner.

NASA’s commercial crew program manager, Steve Stich, said that they have not yet determined a return timeline for Williams and Wilmore.

The thrusters and helium systems of the spacecraft are important for its safe re-entry into the atmosphere of the Earth and any malfunction can pose a significant risk to the safety of the astronauts.

Why is NASA facing the deadline and how it is complicating astronauts' rescue?

The rescue mission of the astronauts is facing a complication because the upcoming Crew-9 mission needs the docking ports at the ISS which is currently accommodated by the Starliner.

The Crew-9 mission will be launched on August 18, 2024 and will transport NASA astronauts Zena Cardman, Nick Hague, and Stephanie Wilson, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, to the ISS through a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

The Crew-9's arrival has added urgency to the situation as the docking port needs to be cleared for which the Starliner needs to be moved.
