In a strange incident, a Malaysian shaman was accused of carrying out abuse on children by performing a “blood kiss” ritual on them.

In the ritual, the shaman used to cut his tongue and then kiss the children while claiming that this ritual would cure their illness.

The ritual was carried out by the faith healer in a temple in Klang, Selangor, which is located on the west coast of Malaysia.

The shaman performed this ritual on various children who were brought to him for healing by their parents.

The temple documented the rituals by clicking its photographs which were later posted on social media. These images were circulated on the internet and ignited controversy.

Social media slams the shaman for such gory rituals

The netizens on social media slammed the parents for taking their children to the shaman and also accused him of child abuse. Some even called the behaviour unsanitary.

After the people had slammed the ritual online, the original posts were deleted by the temple, and its Facebook account has since been deactivated.

Speaking to China Press, Federation Of Taoist Associations Malaysia President Chen Hezhang said, “During the ‘blood kiss’ the child’s hands and feet appear to be restrained, and the child seems visibly uncomfortable, indicating they are not willingly accepting this method. Parents are advised against forcing their children to undergo such treatments – and excessive superstition."

While trying to defend his actions, the so-called shaman whose last name is Lin, said that he only intended to help the children and not harm them. He spoke about how divine intervention guides him.

“As a shaman, when a deity descends, it possesses my body and dictates the methods used to treat believers. As someone chosen by the deity, I must accept this role," he added.

Reacting to the social media, one netizen said, “The parents are the ones who need ‘treatment’ the most, not the child. Those superstitious parents should get their heads checked in a hospital instead of harming the next generation."

“If this can cure diseases, why do we still need doctors? Just kiss all the severely ill patients in the hospital. Start with the parents who brought their children there because they are clearly crazy,” another user said.

The world is set to receive the biggest meteor shower on Earth and NASA has suggested that Americans must leave the cities this weekend and travel to areas where they can witness the magic of the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak from the evening of Sunday and go on till Monday in which nearly 50 to 75 shooting stars will be visible every hour.

However, the US space agency has warned that the cosmic show might not be visible in its best form in the urban areas because of the light pollution.

NASA has suggested the skygazers move outside between 12 am and 5:30 am to witness the meteors which is expected to appear in the northeastern sky.

The peak period in a meteor shower generally occurs when the sky is dark with no moon which forms the perfect backdrop for such a cosmic event.

"Try to get to the darkest location you can. The darker it is where you are, the more meteors you will see streaking across the sky," wrote NASA, in its press release.

The Perseid meteor shower started on July 14 and will continue till September 1, however, the best viewing is this weekend.

NASA has given the annual meteor showers the nickname of the 'fireball champion' for creating the highest number of super bright meteors.

Here's the best way to watch Perseid meteor shower

For those wishing to watch the Perseid meteor shower, first one should find a place outside the city that has very little light pollution and a clear view of the sky.

To locate the meteor shower, the skygazers need to find the Perseus constellation which is the 24th largest constellation present in the sky. In the night sky, this constellation is located in the northern region.

After finding the dark sky location all one needs to do is look up at the stars. The meteors will appear the brightest when it is the darkest period of the night sky that is during the pre-dawn hours after the moon has set and the sun has not risen.

The Perseids meteors will appear in the Northeast where the constellation Perseus will rise after the sky gets dark.

The sky-gazers should avoid looking at their phones or any sources of white light when watching meteors because they will disturb their night vision. People should avoid using a telescope or binoculars to locate the Perseids.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat - who can be rightfully called India's shining armour in the Paris Olympics 2024 - stood at the cusp of making history when her dreams of winning a gold medal were shattered due to her disqualification for being overweight. After getting disqualified, Phogat announced her retirement as she said, "Mom, Wrestling has defeated me, I have lost. I lost…my courage is all broken, I don't have any more strength now".

This is not the first time that the athlete has faced a tough situation.

It was only last year when Phogat was leading an anti-sexual harassment demonstration against Indian politician and then president of the Indian wrestling federation Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Here's the story of the woman whose name will be emboldened in gold in the history of wrestling even without the gold medal.

Who is wrestler Vinesh Phogat?

Vinesh Phogat is an Indian wrestler who was carrying the Olympic story of hope which turned into a heartbreak after being disqualified from the final match in the women’s 50kg freestyle category on Wednesday (Aug 7).

She is a three-time Olympian from Haryana and the first Indian woman wrestler to clinch a gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

She has won multiple medals at the World Wrestling Championships and is the first Indian athlete to be nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards in 2019.

While participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Phogat emerged as the first international wrestler to have defeated reigning gold medalist and four times World Champion Yui Susaki in women's 50kg wrestling and also became India's first female wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Phogat was disqualified because she failed to weigh more than 50kg which was required for the competition on Wednesday morning (August 7), as stated by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

“Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning,” said the IOA, in a statement posted on X.

Feisty wrestler's struggle for justice on streets of India

Phogat became the face of the fierce protests led by the wrestlers against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who faced allegations of sexual misconduct and also raised the hot debate of #MeToo incidents in the world of sports in January 2023.

For weeks, Phogat along with other wrestlers camped in Delhi demanding an investigation against Singh, who was the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

They also wrote a letter to the head of the Indian Olympic Association demanding action on their complaints. When the country's sports ministry assured the athletes that an investigation would be carried out, they paused their protests.

However, because very little action was taken on the issue, Phogat and the other wrestlers again took to the streets and demanded justice. The protests at a few occasions turned violent with police dragging Phogat, her sister Sangeeta Phogat, and wrestler Sakshi Malik out from the demonstration site.

The wrestlers also took the extreme step of throwing their Olympic medals into the Ganges River in Haridwar as a mark of protest.

“These medals decorating our necks no longer mean anything,” said the athletes, in a statement, adding, “What is the point of life when you compromise on dignity?”

Finally, the wrestlers saw a ray of hope when Singh was charged with assault, stalking and sexual harassment by the Delhi police.

On August 7, Phogat's long-cherished dream of winning an Olympic medal after 12 years of struggle and two failed attempts had an unexpected turn. But sinking in despair and accepting defeat is just not in the nature of this Olympian.

Archaeologists have made a stunning discovery of what is being understood as the oldest calendar to have existed on Earth. The calendar is etched in a 12,000-year-old stone pillar which was found by archaeologists at the Gobekli Tepe site in Turkey and is likely to rewrite the timeline of human civilization. According to this discovered timekeeping system, the ancient humans were following accurate ways to keep a tab of passing time before it started getting documented in Ancient Greece in 150 BC. Carving on the tablet tells tale of comet strike and ice age The researchers also discovered that the carving on the tablet depicts a comet strike which led to a mini ice age of 1,200 years. The University of Edinburgh's researchers counted 365 days of 12 lunar months along with 11 additional days as they suspected that every 'V' marking on the pillar represented one day. Also Read: Archaeologists unseal 2000-year-old mummy discovered in Italy's 'Tomb of Cerberus' According to the experts, the memorialised event was the defining moment which forced the ancient people to switch to permanent settlements from leading hunter-gatherer lifestyles. Head of the research and University of Edinburgh School of Engineering's Dr Martin Sweatman said, "It appears the inhabitants of Göbekli Tepe were keen observers of the sky, which is to be expected given their world had been devastated by a comet strike." "This event might have triggered civilization by initiating a new religion and by motivating developments in agriculture to cope with the cold climate," he added. "Possibly, their attempts to record what they saw are the first steps towards the development of writing millennia later," Sweatman added. All about Gobekli Tepe site The Gobekli Tepe site is the world's oldest man-made structure discovered so far. Humans constructed it between 9,600 and 8,200 BC and the site predates Stonehenge by more than 6,000 years. A marriage took a dark and ugly turn in China when a wife decided to remove the life-support system of her dying husband in revenge for his infidelity.

The incident took place in Liaoning province in northeastern China where a 38-year-old man was living with his lover even though he was still married.

His extramarital affair was exposed when the man suffered a cerebral haemorrhage at his lover's house and she rushed him to the hospital for an emergency treatment, as reported by NetEase News.

After the man was admitted to the intensive care unit, the doctors looked out for the lover to get her consent for surgery, however, she had left the hospital.

After this another woman came to the hospital and informed the doctors that she was the man's wife.

The wife was informed by the doctor that the condition of her husband was critical and he was in a coma. She was also told that the man had a very low chance of surviving the operation.

The wife was informed that the current medical equipment will be able to sustain him temporarily and he will require surgery, the cost of which is very high.

The wife informed the doctors that she was aware of her husband's extramarital affair and that he had no feelings for her and also did not provide any financial support. She further accepted that she also had no feelings for him.

The scientists stumbled upon the fossils of early human species which were only around 3 and a half feet (1.07 metres) tall and hence were given the nickname “hobbits.”

This discovery was made 20 years ago. However, a new study has now claimed that the ancestors of the hobbits were shorter in height.

“We did not expect that we would find smaller individuals from such an old site,” said the lead author of the study Yousuke Kaifu a professor at the University of Tokyo, while reacting to the find in an email to the Associated Press.

The original fossils of the hobbit date back to between 60,000 and 100,000 years ago. The scientists excavated the new fossils at the site known as Mata Menge, which is at a distance of 45 miles from the cave where the first remains of the hobbit were discovered.

The researchers suspected that the early humans may have been shorter in comparison to the hobbits in 2019 after they discovered a jawbone and teeth from the new site.

After further analysis, it was discovered that the teeth and tiny arm bone fragment suggested that the ancestors of humans were only 2.4 inches (6 centimetres) shorter and existed 700,000 years ago.

“They’ve convincingly shown that these were very small individuals," Dean Falk, an evolutionary anthropologist at Florida State University, who was not involved with the research, told AP.

The 700,000-year-old fossilised remains were said to belong to Homo floresiensis, which was an extinct species of very small humans that once lived in Flores, an island in the south of Indonesia, as per a study published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday (August 6).

"Acquiring a large body and large brain and becoming clever is not necessarily our destiny," said lead author Kaifu, while speaking to Live Science.

"Depending on the natural environment, there were diverse ways of evolution not only for animals in general but also for humans," he added.

"The Mata Menge fossils we report here showed that the extremely small body size of Homo floresiensis evolved within the first 300,000 years of their history on the island … and then after that, the small body size was maintained for more than 600,000 years. Why this happened is another difficult question," he said.

"We tend to think that humans are special among animals. But the evidence from Flores indicates that we humans are, like other animals, also under control of natural selection and could evolve toward unexpected directions," Kaifu added.
