The intense solar wind streams which have been slamming the magnetic field of Earth - also known as the magnetosphere - have led to some major changes.

The solar winds have formed the sunward side of the magnetosphere which is called a bow shock and has stretched the magnetic field in the shape of a wind sock with a long tail on the nightside.

The solar wind went through dramatic changes and has altered the dynamics and structure of the magnetosphere.

Powerful CMEs disrupting Earth's magnetosphere

In an article published in Geophysical Research Letters, Li‐Jen Chen and his colleagues reported that there were unprecedented observations of a rare phenomenon which has been created during a coronal mass ejection (CME).

It was observed that CMEs move faster in comparison to the Alfvén speed, which is the speed at which vibrating magnetic field lines move across magnetized plasma that can vary with the plasma environment.

In 2023, a CME disrupted the normal configuration of the magnetosphere of Earth for nearly two hours.

The observations from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS) were analysed by the researchers.

The MMS spacecraft on April 24, 2023, observed that although the solar wind's streaming speed was fast, the Alfvén speed noticed amid strong CME was even faster. Generally, solar wind travels faster in comparison to Alfvén's speed.

This anomaly causes the bow shock in Earth to temporarily disappear and let the plasma and magnetic field from the Sun interact directly with the magnetosphere.

What did the CMEs do to Earth's wind sock tail?

It was observed by scientists that the wind sock tail of the Earth was replaced by structures called Alfvén wings which formed a connection between the magnetosphere of the Earth to the recently erupted region of the sun.

This connection worked like a highway which was transporting plasma between the Sun and the magnetosphere.

The unique CME event gave new insights into how the formation and evolution of the Alfvén wings took place, said the authors.

Sun's coronal mass ejection bombarded Earth, changed its magnetic field. Here's how

In a new study, the researchers have discovered that the world is not far away from the day when it will start experiencing apocalyptic weather events, which will eventually lead to doomsday.

The chain of catastrophic events is likely to start unfolding at any time in the next 6,000 years, as per the study.

A team of researchers from the Technical University of Munich and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research have analysed and forecasted the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is likely to collapse in the next decade and a half which will set the cycle of catastrophic climatic conditions.

The collapse is likely to redefine the weather and climate patterns of our planet and have far-reaching consequences on the ecosystems as well as human societies.

What is Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation?

Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is the essential system function which is similar to a colossal oceanic conveyor belt.

This system sends warm surface water from the southern hemisphere to the chilly areas of the North Atlantic. The saltier and colder water moves down the ocean floor and flows south.

This system prevents overheating in the Southern Hemisphere and stops the Northern Hemisphere from freezing but also spreads life-nourishing nutrients across the marine ecosystems.

According to climate experts, the AMOC will weaken because of the melting ice and increase in greenhouse gases. According to the earlier predictions from historical data, a collapse is likely to happen between 2025 and 2095.

However, as per the new study, because of too many uncertainties, such predictions are not reliable.

With the help of various data sets and analyses, the AMOC's tipping times ranged between 2050 to 8065, which has given the researchers a 6,000-year window.

How will the catastrophic climatic conditions begin on Earth?

After the collapse of AMOC, the Northern Hemisphere is expected to get colder and the temperatures across Europe will drop dramatically.

Arctic ice will move southwards and the southern coast of England will be enveloped by it within a century.

Earth has a weird volcano located in Tanzania which, while continuously erupting carbonatite lava, is also sinking inside the ground at a speed of 1.4 inches per annum in the last decade. The Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano is filled with magma which has been erupting beyond the ground hose but at the same time sinking for the past 10 years, according to a new study. The scientists believe that the volcano is sinking because of the deflating reservoir which is located just beneath the two craters of the volcano. Here's what the study says about Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano In the new research, it has been found that the ground near the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano - which is present along the active rift zone in East Africa - has been sinking at the rate of 1.4 inches (3.6 centimetres) every year between 2013 and 2023. Also Read: Researchers discover first deep-snouted tyrannosaur in Southern China This meant that the 9,718-foot-tall (2,962 meters) volcano shrank by nearly 1.2 feet (36 cm) during the study, which was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters on June 8. The data collected from two satellite systems, Sentinel-1 and Cosmo-SkyMed, was used by the researchers to produce maps which showed the changes taking place in the ground around Ol Doinyo Lengai through time. In the maps, a circular patch of ground was seen around the northern crater of the volcano, which indicated that it was "moving away from the satellite with a steady rate of displacement over time," said the researchers, in the study. Rare volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai boasts of extremely runny magma This volcano is the only one existing on Earth which has an actively erupting and extremely runny carbonatite magma. The magma is saturated with alkali elements, like calcium and sodium and is poor in silica. Volcanologist and associate professor at Denison University in Ohio Erik Klemetti, in a Wired article, wrote, "If you had to pick the most unique volcano on Earth, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better candidate than Tanzania's Ol Doinyo Lengai". The lava which is flowing from Ol Doinyo Lengai is "some of the strangest stuff you'll ever see," he said, adding that it is producing weird "garden hose" eruptions which will leave behind white stains. Watch: Europe: Footage shows explosive Mount Etna eruption In earlier research, it was said that the newly-blasted crater is likely to be subsiding, however, as per the new study, the crater's upper slopes have started sinking since 2013. As per the study, the likely cause for this sinking volcano was the deflating magma reservoir, which is located 3,300 feet (1,000 m) under the volcano. "The geometry and characteristics of the shallow magma plumbing system below Ol Doinyo Lengai remain elusive," wrote the researchers, in the study. There was a hint of a shallow reservoir in the previous studies. It is likely that this reservoir is connected to a bigger magma storage area of 9,900 feet (3,000 m) or is located deeper beneath the volcano, as per the study. (With inputs from agencies)

An unmanned submersible robot named 'Ran' has offered scientists a sneak peek into the mysterious and never-known world existing beneath the Antarctic ice shelves which have been melting in the wake of climate change.

The robot, which has cutting-edge sonar, spent 27 days travelling underneath the Dotson Ice Shelf which covers a wide expanse of 1000 kilometres and reveals the never-before-seen details regarding these icy expanses.

The Dotson Ice Shelf is an important place located in West Antarctica. They are not at all flat but have passive expanses of ice shelves which keep evolving.

They have thick bodies of glacial ice which are sustained by land-based glaciers. What makes these ice shelves unique is the fact that they float at the top of the sea and ice shelf cavities exist beneath them.

In its recent mission, Ran focused on one cavity which unravelled new secrets regarding the melting patterns and structures of the ice shelves.

The Dotson Ice Shelf also plays an important role in the overall stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet and how the sea levels will rise in future because of their size and location.

What's hidden beneath the ice sheets of Antarctica?

In the glacial exploration, it was found that the ice was melting faster where its base was eroded by strong underwater currents.

However, the scientists were left stunned after finding the irregularity of the base itself.

It was discovered that the surface beneath Antarctica is not smooth, but the underwater landscape is filled with peaks, valleys, plateaus and formations similar to sand dunes.

According to the team, these features are likely to have been formed by flowing water under the influence of rotation of the Earth.

Indian man constructs temple for 'Alien God', claims he spoke to aliens who will save world

The thin and elusive atmosphere of the Moon has puzzled astronomers for centuries.

There is a definite lack of breathable air on the satellite, however, it does have a thin film of atoms that are found skittering along its craggy surface.

In scientific terms, this is called an “exosphere” which is a tenuous atmosphere that has been a topic of intrigue for all astronomers since it was first found in the 1980s.

Also Read: Moon is going far away from the Earth. Will it disappear soon from night sky?

Assistant professor in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Nicole Nie said that unique insights have now been found in the atmosphere of the Moon.

The study was carried out by Nie along with her team at the University of Chicago and NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre.

Here's what scientists found about Moon's elusive atmosphere

The team of scientists in the research found that the atmosphere of the Moon has undergone a bombarding of the meteorites which has led to the phenomenon known as "impact vaporization."

In this process, the impact kicks up the lunar soil and leads to the vaporising materials which either escape to space or remain in a suspended position in the atmosphere of the moon which renews its exosphere.

"We give a definitive answer that meteorite impact vaporisation is the dominant process that creates the lunar atmosphere," said team leader Nicole Nie, an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in a statement.

"The moon is close to 4.5 billion years old, and through that time, the surface has been continuously bombarded by meteorites. We show that eventually, a thin atmosphere reaches a steady state because it's being continuously replenished by small impacts all over the moon," Nie said

"With impact vaporisation, most of the atoms would stay in the lunar atmosphere, whereas with ion sputtering, a lot of atoms would be ejected into space," she added.

Commenting on the study, lunar soils researcher at Cambridge University Justin Hu said, "The discovery of such a subtle effect is remarkable, thanks to the innovative idea of combining potassium and rubidium isotope measurements along with careful, quantitative modelling."

"This discovery goes beyond understanding the moon's history, as such processes could occur and might be more significant on other moons and asteroids, which are the focus of many planned return missions," he added.

Here's what scientists found about Moon's elusive atmosphere The team of scientists in the research found that the atmosphere of the Moon has undergone a bombarding of the meteorites which has led to the phenomenon known as "impact vaporization." In this process, the impact kicks up the lunar soil and leads to the vaporising materials which either escape to space or remain in a suspended position in the atmosphere of the moon which renews its exosphere. We show that eventually, a thin atmosphere reaches a steady state because it's being continuously replenished by small impacts all over the moon," Nie said "With impact vaporisation, most of the atoms would stay in the lunar atmosphere, whereas with ion sputtering, a lot of atoms would be ejected into space," she added. The Chinese netizens on the social media platforms were shocked when they found out about the “control freak” parents who landed in trouble after their adult daughter filed a complaint against them for installing a surveillance camera in her bedroom.

The story of the parents spying on their daughter emerged when the 20-year-old woman reached out to the Beijing police station for help on July 26.

The police officers were informed by the second-year university student that she had run away from her home because she “wanted freedom”.

The woman complained that a surveillance camera was installed by her parents in her bedroom and added that the couple would also beat her up and throw her mobile phone when she made any mistakes.

She added that because of their violent parenting she has been suffering from trauma. The 20-year-old said that she wished to find some part-time jobs in Beijing, save money and live independently without her parents.

The woman said that she went to the police because she feared that her parents would file a missing complaint for her and “make a scene” so she wanted the police to be informed about the situation beforehand.

Police officer Zhang Chuanbin comforted the 20-year-old and agreed that the behaviour of her parents was wrong. He then reached out to the parents and said that they should give their daughter some space and respect her privacy.

Beijing police later added that the girl's parents agreed to remove the spy camera and the student went back to her home.

Here's how netizens reacted to the incident

The behaviour of the parents was widely criticised on social media.

“So horrible. Having no private space at all despite being 20,” said a person on Weibo.
“Children are independent individuals, not parents’ belongings – some Chinese parents should keep this in mind,” wrote another.

“Even a prison respects people’s privacy more than this,” commented a third user. “She was brave to fight back, and wise to go to the police to avoid trouble,” wrote a fourth user.

A team of Swiss researchers have proposed using an autonomous, robotic hydraulic excavator for building a dry stone wall which will work as a blast shield and protect the launch pad on the moon.

The excavator will be using the in situ materials and the rocks from the lunar surface will be collected for making the ringed wall, which will have a radius of between 50 and 100 metres.

The scientists don't plan to adopt the costly practice of transferring the building material from Earth to the moon.

"The robot would be used to both collect the boulders as well as to construct the wall," said study lead author Jonas Walther, while speaking to Space.com.

The research was conducted by Walther for his master's thesis at ETH Zürich. Walther is now working with the Swiss company Venturi Lab which has been working with other companies on lunar rover design.

Lunar infrastructure - a quintessential step for humans in future?

According to scientists, the lunar infrastructure will be required if humans someday permanently settle on the moon to protect them from the exhaust and debris from rockets which are landing or taking off.

Gas, small particles and dust from rocket exhaust can prove to be hazardous, which was demonstrated when the Surveyor 3 probe was brought back by the Apollo 12 crew from the Oceanus Procellarum and the scientists found that it suffered damage by dust blown away by the Lunar Module Intrepid.

The scientists also fear that the rocket exhaust from SpaceX's giant Starship vehicle - through which astronauts will be sent on NASA's Artemis 3 mission - will harm the lunar environment in the area of hundreds of metres and extend it into kilometres.

Hence, they feel there is a need to set up a blast shield to protect any future ground infrastructure.

"Some dry stone walls on Earth have endured for thousands of years," said Walther, while speaking about how strong it is.

However, scientists feel that such shields won't have to last on the lunar surface for a very long time and the vastly reduced weathering on the moon means that the wall will only have to resist the blasts of rockets taking off or landing.

According to the estimate of the weather team, the blast shield will have to face pressure from gases released by SpaceX's Starship rockets, which will be 1,135 Pascals.

The skies will witness a rare celestial event on August 14 when Mars and Jupiter will align with each other in conjunction.

In the breathtaking event, the two planets will be only a third of a degree apart, which is less than the width of a full Moon, according to NASA.

No special equipment will be required for the observers to see both Mars and Jupiter in the eastern direction for nearly an hour before sunrise on August 14.

At the end of the sunrise, the conjunction of Jupiter and Mars will be joined by the Moon, which will appear next to Jupiter and above Mars, adding to the celestial spectacle. This conjunction will also be visible on August 27 for an hour before sunrise.

Why does a planetary conjunction occur?

A planetary conjunction happens in the sky when two planets get positioned very closely from the perspective of Earth. This occurs because the planets align along the same line of sight, even though they are at a distance of millions of kilometres in space.

From the viewpoint of astronomical events, August has been an important day. The Perseid meteor shower is likely to peak on August 11 and allow viewers to see around 50 to 70 meteors per hour.

No special equipment will be required for the observers to see both Mars and Jupiter in the eastern direction for nearly an hour before sunrise on August 14. Also Read: Are we alone in the cosmos? NASA chief says a trillion Earth-like planets are out there At the end of the sunrise, the conjunction of Jupiter and Mars will be joined by the Moon, which will appear next to Jupiter and above Mars, adding to the celestial spectacle. Watch: Mercury's Diamonds: What lies beneath the planet's crust? Generally, the Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August after emerging from the constellation Perseus. NASA said that the origin of the Perseid meteors lies in the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle - which completes one orbit of the Sun every 133 years. When Earth crosses the debris trail, the rocks strike the atmosphere of the planet and a meteor shower happens. (With inputs from agencies)
