The night sky from California to Texas was lit up a little extraordinarily last week when a mysterious and slow-moving fireball traversed through it, leaving people puzzled about its identity.

In the camera footage, which has been obtained by NBC 7, the lit ball of fire was spotted slowly moving across the sky and leaving behind a trail through its bring trail outside of San Diego over the home of Rebecca Woods who lives in San Marco

“Our camera is facing south and the object flew from west to east,” said Woods, while speaking to NBC 7.

China has various giant sinkholes and at the bottom of these mysterious pits are 'heavenly' forests filled with nutrient-rich plants which grow comparatively faster than the plants which grow on Earth's surface, according to a new study. As per the study, these mysterious plants at the bottom of the sinkhole use less amount of fundamental building blocks even though they grow at a faster speed. These sinkholes are known as "tiankeng", which means "heavenly pits" and are the ancient forests' few of the last remaining natural refuges. It is believed that these forests are likely to harbour unknown species, however, scientists have failed to understand how these plants are thriving at the bottom of the deep sinkholes. According to scientists, the ferns, nettles and laurels thrive inside tiankeng because of the huge amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Also Read: Researchers discover first deep-snouted tyrannosaur in Southern China Since these nutrients are available in abundance in these pits, the plants slurp them up with the hope to grow tall and ensure that most of the sunlight reaches their leaves, as per the study which was published in the Chinese Journal of Plant Ecology. "Plants can adapt to adverse environments by adjusting their nutrient content," wrote the researchers in the study. All about Tiankeng - China's "heavenly pit" Very little amount of sunlight reached the bottom of the pit in Mandarin. In the southwestern karst landscape of China, Tiankeng are 330-foot-deep (100 meters) holes. The plants which need shade and moisture are harboured in these deep pits, along with the species unique to the region, as per the study. "Due to the towering cliffs and steep terrain of the Tiankeng, it has been less disturbed by human activities," the researchers wrote. "Tiankeng are refuges for modern karst forest plants, including the Nepali hog plum (Choerospondias axillaris) and the Chinese rain bell (Strobilanthes cusia)," the researchers wrote. Watch: China slams US and Japan of 'falsely accusing' it of maritime threats The plants which grew inside these pits had lower carbon contents in comparison to those which grew outside but were filled with every other element measured by the researchers like potassium and calcium. It was also found that Tiankeng plants are able to absorb nutrients more readily in comparison to "conservative" surface plants since there are various nutrients in the shady depths of sinkholes, according to the study. "The soil nutritional status inside the Tiankeng forest is good," the researchers added and said that the plants have evolved in a way that they know how to make the best use of the resources available. In the world of science fiction, flying cars have long been a dominant feature as humans have wondered when they will become a part of our real life.

However, now with the invention and successful testing of flying taxis, flying cars do not appear as a dream but something that will soon turn into reality.

A flying taxi, which was powered by hydrogen, covered a record 561 miles (902km) when it flew over California.

This flying car has been created by Joby Aviation and has been fueled by hydrogen which means it does not produce any emissions apart from the water vapour.

Speaking about the flying car, founder and CEO of Joby JoeBen Bevirt said, "Imagine being able to fly from San Francisco to San Diego, Boston to Baltimore, or Nashville to New Orleans without the need to go to an airport and with no emissions except water. That world is closer than ever."

All about the flying taxi

The US military had partly funded the air taxi which is powered by six propellers that gave it the ability to take off as well as land vertically like a helicopter.

Once the taxi takes off, its propellers rotate from a vertical to a horizontal position that allows the taxi to fly ahead similar to a traditional fixed-wing aircraft.

The taxi's adaptable capacity allows it to accommodate four passengers at a speed of 200 miles per hour (322kmph) or when flying in urban areas.

It is not the first time such an aircraft has been flown but this aircraft is unique because it is hydrogen which powers these propellers.

This spacecraft is an original all-electric aircraft's modified version which has been designed by Joby and has covered 25,000 miles (40,000 km) of test flights.

Leaving out electric systems or fossil fuels, Joby chose a hydrogen-electric power system for providing clean energy over longer flights.

The batteries of the craft have been replaced with a fuel cell which can hold nearly 40kg (88 lbs) of liquid hydrogen that can be converted into heat, electricity and water vapour in flight.

After the flight covered 523 miles, the company said that it still had 10 per cent of its fuel left.

NASA has issued warning after they spotted a 150-foot (46-metre) asteroid named 2024 NS1, hurtling towards Earth at a threatening speed of 27,274 km/h.

The asteroid, which is almost the size of an aeroplane, will make its closest approach to Earth on August 2 at 00:05 UTC (5:35 IST).

Asteroid 2024 NS1 has been classified as an Apollo asteroid, which is part of a group of near-Earth objects (NEOs) whose orbits cross the path of the Earth.

Even though many of the NEOs don't come very near to Earth, some of them do come at a scary distance and get tagged as potentially hazardous asteroids which need more attention.

A research team from the Southern Methodist University (SMU) have discovered rocks and fossils in Angola which speak about how South America and Africa tore apart nearly 140 million years ago and led to the formation of the South Atlantic Ocean.

The team found the rocks and fossils which belonged to the long-extinct marine reptiles in Angola.

It is not new information that the eastern coast of South America and the western coast of Africa once were co-joined in the supercontinent Gondwana, which had drifted from the larger landmass of Pangea.

According to the research team, the southern coast of Angola is filled with the most complete geological record of the breaking of the two continents and the coming up of the South Atlantic Ocean.

“Before this, there was not a place known to go and see the rocks on the surface that really reflected the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean, because they’re now in the ocean or eroded away,” he added.

Here's what the rocks from Angola tell about the breaking of the continent

Nearly 140 million years ago, Africa and South America started breaking off which caused gashes on the crust of the Earth and led to the opening up of the rifts along the pre-existing weaknesses.

The tectonic plates beneath Africa and South America moved apart which led to magma from the mantle of Earth rising to the surface and forming a new oceanic crust while pushing the continents in opposite directions.

The gap between the two newly-formed continents was eventually filled with the South Atlantic Ocean.

“It’s one thing for a geophysicist to be able to look at seismic data and make inferences from that. It’s quite another thing to be able to take a school field trip out to the rock formations, or outcrops, and say this is when the lava was spreading from eastern South America. Or this was when it was a continuous land," said study co-author Michael J. Polcyn.

Telegram's founder and Chief Executive Officer Pavel Durov made a shocking revelation as he claimed he has more than "100 biological kids".

Taking to the messaging application, the CEO shared about his biological kids and the plan ahead with his 5.7 million subscribers.

"I was just told that I have over 100 biological kids. How is this possible for a guy who has never been married and prefers to live alone?" Durov said.

He explained that nearly 15 years ago, a friend came to him with a "weird request".

"He said that he and his wife couldn't have kids due to a fertility issue and asked me to donate sperm at a clinic for them to have a baby. I laughed my ass off before realizing he was dead serious," the Telegram founder said.

He said that the head of the clinic told him that "high-quality donor material" was in short supply. The doctor further said that it was Durov's "civic duty to donate more sperm to anonymously help more couples."

"This sounded crazy enough to get me to sign up for sperm donation. Fast forward to 2024, my past donating activity has helped over a hundred couples in 12 countries to have kids. Moreover, many years after I stopped being a donor, at least one IVF clinic still has my frozen sperm available for anonymous use by families who want to have kids," he said.

Entrepreneur Pavel Durov speaks about the plan ahead

The 39-year-old entrepreneur said that he has now made plans to open-source his DNA which will help his biological children find each other.

Speaking about the importance of healthy sperm, Durov said that he is proud that he did his duty.

"Of course, there are risks, but I don't regret having been a donor. The shortage of healthy sperm has become an increasingly serious issue worldwide, and I'm proud that I did my part to help alleviate it. I also want to help destigmatize the whole notion of sperm donation and incentivize more healthy men to do it, so that families struggling to have kids can enjoy more options. Defy convention - redefine the norm," the CEO wrote on Telegram.

In the genomes of the human body, some of the zombie viruses - which have been handed over from foreign DNA and passed to humans through generations - remain hidden and unnoticed.

It was believed for a long time that they were inactive, but recent studies have suggested that these sequences of genes have the capability of wreaking havoc.

The researchers, headed by University of Colorado bioinformatician Atma Ivancevic, discovered that cancers can make use of some of these zombie virus parts for their growth.

Genome biologist and senior author Edward Chuong said, "Our study shows that diseases today can be significantly influenced by these ancient viral infections that until recently very few researchers were paying attention to."

These ancient genes, which were earlier dismissed as 'junk' DNA, are snippets of virus leftovers called endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) which are important for the existence of mammals because they spurred the evolution of the placenta.

However, not everything about ERVs is helping in the existence of humans.

"We know that cancer cells express a lot of genes that are not supposed to be on, but no one really knows what is turning them on. It turns out many of the switches turning them on are derived from these ancient viruses," said Chuong.

How did the researchers find that ancient genes are pushing cancer?

The datasets on the epigenomes of 21 types of cancer were analysed by Ivancevic and her team, who stumbled upon a particular family of ERV called long terminal repeat 10 (LTR10) which was found to be active at very high levels. The researchers found that our primate ancestors were infected by the original virus around 30 million years ago.

The researchers carried out a functional study on a cell line of colorectal cancer tissues in which it was found that the expression of genes was regulated by LTR10 with established roles in the generation of tumours.

The undead LTR10 genes were taken out of action in human colorectal tumour cells and in mice, the genes which are known to lead to the growth of cancer, including XRCC4, were deactivated.

Ivancevic and his team found that LTR10 works as an epigenetic switch to control these genes. It was also discovered that cancer has been using this discarded virus to change patterns of gene expression in tumours.

The researchers said these zombie viruses are likely to come back to life when human defences break down and lead to health problems.

Comet C/2023 A3 or Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, which has been given the title of ‘comet of the century' is set to come very close to Earth in autumn 2024.

When it approaches the Earth, it is likely to have a bright, beautiful and long tail as it passes by the Sun at a distance which is similar to the orbit of Mercury. During this time, the ice over the comet will evaporate, a large amount of dust will cover it and it will have the brightest tail.

A rare canvas of rock art has been discovered hidden in the caves of Colombia's Amazon forest which tells us a different tale of early settlers.

The canvas of human history was found in the wilderness of the forest by an international team of researchers from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Universidad de Antioquia and the University of Exeter.

The cave is located in the Serranía de la Lindosa, Cerro Azul which is a tabletop hill near the Guayabero River and has been an important part of the early humans who were in the Amazon.

On this hill are hidden multiple rock arts which serve as a testament to the beliefs and lives of the early settlers of the region.

Associate Professor in Exeter’s Department of Archaeology and History Dr Mark Robinson said, “These rock art sites include the earliest evidence of humans in western Amazonia, dating back 12,500 years ago. As such, the art is an amazing insight into how these first settlers understood their place in the world and how they formed relationships with animals.”

The detailed study of animal remains found in the excavations was carried out by the team and the artistic depictions were analysed which revealed an intriguing discrepancy.

Although the remains of the animal suggested that humans lived on various animals like mammals, reptiles, and even fish, it looked like the artists were not just painting the animals served on the dinner table.

The researchers observed that the images of animals and humans suggested some species were revered and said to possess supernatural connections, which may have given birth to complex rituals.

Dr. Javier Aceituno, who is from Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, said, “The Indigenous people of Cerro Azul and the surrounding lands hunted and depicted a diverse array of animals from different ecologies – from aquatic fish to arboreal monkeys; terrestrial deer to aerial birds, both nocturnal and diurnal."

He added, “They had intimate knowledge of the various habitats in the region and possessed the relevant skills to hunt animals and harvest plants from each, as part of a broad subsistence strategy.”
