In a rarely-heard medical situation, an infection in the wisdom tooth of a 23-year-old girl turned deadly for her.&nbsp;

Caitlin Alsop suddenly started seeing a rash on her face time and again for some months which was a sign that something was not right with her body.

“I went to a couple of doctors but I didn’t really think there was anything going on and then I ended up with some flu-like symptoms,” said Alsop, while speaking to news.com.au.

The girl said that she started experiencing fever, sore ears and a sore&nbsp;throat. After some days, when she eventually felt better, she went to dinner with a friend.

While she was eating, it felt to her as if she had bitten her tongue and after a few hours passed, her tongue got swollen and she began to drool.

Alsop started facing difficulty in breathing and talking and was also not able to swallow the antihistamine - which is given for treating allergic reactions - after which she went to the hospital.

In the next 45 minutes, the doctors diagnosed her with anaphylaxis and administered her two shots of adrenaline.&nbsp;

However, her situation worsened and she started to fall in and out of consciousness. At the same time, a severe blue and red rash also developed on the upper half of the body.

<h2>Doctors try to resolve a 'medical mystery'</h2>

Alsop was shifted to Gold Coast University Hospital where she was referred to as a “medical mystery” because of her unique case.&nbsp;

The girl's tongue also started to blacken and the doctors discussed tracheostomy and necrotising fasciitis.

Eventually, the doctors performed an endotracheal intubation and shifted her to the intensive care unit.&nbsp;

She complained that her skin was severely burned after which an anaesthetist suspected that the girl was suffering from ludwig angina - in which a life-threatening cellulitis of the soft tissue develops on the&nbsp;floor of the mouth and neck.

The doctors carried out a CT scan of the affected area and eventually found the root cause of the problem which was her wisdom tooth that had been infected and almost killed her.

“I had no pain, no symptoms and this nearly killed me overnight. It’s absolutely crazy. I didn’t know that an infection could be so serious. Like so many young people, I had no idea an infection could lead to this. I was walking around and then I was literally burning from the inside out in the ICU as a medical mystery," the girl said.

After finding out the root cause, the doctors carried out an emergency surgery on the girl and extracted her wisdom tooth, which was also crushing her jugular vein.

The girl was in a coma for nine days. “I felt like a child when I woke up, because I was just so disorientated. I’ve had such strong drugs. I couldn’t really eat, couldn’t really talk, and it was just a very interesting journey," Alsop said.

A giant 'devil frog' existed around 70 million years ago on planet Earth and ate the baby&nbsp;dinosaurs, revealed a shocking study.&nbsp;

The 'devil frog' was as big as a beach ball and has been named as "Beelzebufo" - which is a combination of the Greek word "Beelzebub" meaning devil along with the toad's Latin word which is "bufo". This animal once existed in what is today known as Madagascar, as reported by IFL Science.

In 2008, a team of researchers from UCL and Stony Brook University discovered a fossil in Madagascar, after they believed that the Beelzebufo lived only in South America.

On the website of UCL, UCL Biosciences Professor Susan Evans said, "This frog, a relative of today's horned toads, would have been the size of a slightly squashed beach ball, with short legs and a big mouth."

"If it shared the aggressive temperament and 'sit-and-wait' ambush tactics of living horned toads, it would have been a formidable predator on small animals," he added.

"Its diet would most likely have consisted of insects and small vertebrates like lizards but it's not impossible that Beelzebufo might even have munched on hatchling or juvenile dinosaurs," the professor further explained.

<h2>How did researchers discover Beelzebufo feasted on baby dinos?</h2>

As per the reports, Beelzebufo existed on Earth around 65-70 million years ago and is most likely the largest frog to have ever lived on planet Earth. However, it then became extinct.

To understand if Beelzebufo actually feasted on baby dinos,&nbsp;a research team observed how strongly horned toads bit on a bar.

"Given that prey size is known to increase with body size in a variety of tetrapods and that Beelzebufo clearly had the ability to bite with considerable force, large individuals would have been able to prey upon a variety of contemporaneous taxa, including small/juvenile crocodiles and non-avian dinosaurs," discovered the study.

The researchers compared the strength of the bite and jaws of horned toads with the measurements of Beelzebufo which proved they did consume baby dinosaurs.

The influencer has now warned people to treat the commonly used cosmetic material polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as if it were a plague.

“I always dreamed of being a mother,”&nbsp;said the Brazilian influencer, while speaking to Need To Know.&nbsp;

Even though the infertility of Pamplona is not directly linked with the use of PMMA, her complications are most likely associated with its adverse reaction or improper application.&nbsp;

<h2>How PMMA landed the influencer hanging between life and death</h2>

It is said that the substance is able to migrate from the injection site and move to other parts of the body, like the pelvic area, and can affect the reproductive organs' functioning.

Pamplona said that she faced an adverse reaction to the material because it spread from her rear pelvic area and entered her reproductive organs when the doctors carried out a bioplasty on her a decade ago.&nbsp;

The influencer's surgeon, Dr. Carlos Rios, said that the medical mishap turned into a "matter of life or death.”

“The symptoms she exhibited were a direct consequence of this procedure. She was hanging by a thread," he said.

“The suffering is immense, and the pain of not being able to create life is something I never imagined facing,” the influencer said.

But her doctor said that things have been improving “with meditation, proper diet, supplementation and medication.”

“My limitations are severe, and I don’t know what the future holds,” the influencer stated sadly.

The scientists found dark particles, which ranged from dust-sized to approximately 3.5 cm long, along with some lighter particles and stones, with&nbsp;brighter material that formed veins and crusts in the samples of the asteroid.

“Analyses show Bennu is among the most chemically primitive materials known, similar in composition to the visible surface of the sun,” said OSIRIS-REx Sample Analysis Team member Associate Professor Nick Timms.

“This indicates Bennu has undergone different processes to the planets, and these processes changed the abundance of particular elements relative to the sun," he added.

In the analysis of the samples, the presence of various components were also confirmed, like hydrated phyllosilicates, which is a type of mineral that forms when water is present, and carbon-rich material.

“This means asteroids such as this may have played a key role in delivering water and the building blocks of life to Earth,” said Associate Professor Timms.

The scientists also found some unexpected components in the samples. “We were surprised to find magnesium-sodium phosphates, which further suggests Bennu experienced chemical environments which possibly involved water," said Associate Professor Timms.

Asteroid Bennu brought life and water to Earth, it existed before Solar System's origin: Study

Siberia has been hosting a massive hole called the “Gateway to Hell" which has grown triple in size in just 30 years, according to scientists.

The 200-acre wide and 300-foot deep hole is present in the Yana highlands of Siberia and is called the 'Batagaika Crater'.&nbsp;

It has now been observed that the hole has been expanding faster than expected because of climate change.&nbsp;

The hole, which is officially known as Batagay, is the second-oldest permafrost on Earth.

In the 1960S, the forest area was cleared and sunlight started reaching the ground of the hole and began warming it.&nbsp;

In a new study, the scientists have claimed that all blue-eyed people are descendants of one European who was living between 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.&nbsp;

Originally, humans had only brown eyes in various shades till a specific mutation led to a significant change.&nbsp;

<h2>Why do humans have blue eyes?</h2>

According to the scientists, the mutation is a gene known as HERC2 and it switches off OCA2, which is the gene which helps in determining how much brown pigment we produce.&nbsp;

This is the reason why our eyes turn blue.&nbsp;

The scientists then found out that every blue-eyed person has descended from the same person because all of them have the same mutation.

According to scientists, blue eyes are possessed by only 8 to 10 per cent of the population.

They added that sometimes eyes fail to fully develop in childhood which means that the brown pigment can come later and make blue-eyed children turn into brown eyes adults.

The team, which consists of a group from the University of Copenhagen, was able to discover a genetic mutation which happened 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The research was carried out by a team at the University of Copenhagen.

Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, who led the study,&nbsp;said, "Originally, we all had brown eyes. But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a ‘switch,’ which literally "turned off" the ability to produce brown eyes."

The P protein is involved in the production of melanin and it contains the OCA2 gene codes which have the pigment which determines the colour of hair, eyes, and skin.

The pigment does not create a blue colour but turns off the mechanism through which brown melanin pigment is produced and effectively "dilutes" brown eyes to blue.

A man&nbsp;who was discovered frozen in a cave nearly 50 years ago in Pennsylvania, United States has now been identified.

The Berks County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as 27-year-old Nicholas Paul Grubb who was from Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

For a long time, Grubb was known as the “Pinnacle Man" which is a moniker which referred to the Appalachian mountain peak where his body was found by two hikers on January 16, 1977.

When an autopsy of the dead body was carried out, the authorities had not found any foul play and ruled that he died because of a drug overdose, reported The New York Times.

However, the officials were not able to identify the body of Grubb from his appearance, dental information, belongings, fingerprints and clothing which were collected for examination and were later misplaced.&nbsp;

While speaking to the reporters, Berks County’s Coroner John Fielding said that “detectives from the state police and investigators from the coroner’s office” had revisited the case periodically in the last 15 years and compared his information “to no less than 10 missing persons through fingerprints and dental X-rays”.

Although the DNA samples of Grubb didn’t match any missing person cases, Pennsylvania State Police trooper Ian Keck in August 2024 found his missing fingerprints.
