As torrential rains slammed the Indian state of Gujarat, the usual problem of crocodiles swimming in the residential areas of Vadodara emerged again.&nbsp;

The Vishwamitri River overflowed which led to these crocodiles entering residential neighbourhoods.&nbsp;

In such circumstances, a video went viral in which two men were seen carrying a crocodile comfortably in their lap. The men were carrying the reptile on a scooter and taking it to the forest department office.&nbsp;

The video was shared by a user @DixitGujarat on X (formerly Twitter). According to a report by the Indian Express, the men were volunteers of the Indian Medical Association (IMA).&nbsp;

A guest has sued a hotel in Las Vegas after he got stung by a scorpion on his testicles during his stay after the animal made it to his bed.&nbsp;

The man has said that the incident has left him with trauma and PTSD and his wife has complained that their sex life has changed drastically after the incident.&nbsp;

The man, who is a resident of Agora Hills, California, was staying at The Venetian post-Christmas last year when the stinging incident took place.

The 62-year-old Michael Farchi said that the scorpion allegedly crawled into his bed and inserted his stinger into his private part as he felt he was being stabbed by a “sharp glass or a knife.”

Farchi also took the images of the scorpion which stung him as evidence. Last week, he sued the hotel and claimed that he had suffered emotional trauma and PTSD because of the incident, as reported by 8 News Now in Las Vegas.

“I can also indicate, as you saw in the complaint, we’re also making a claim for loss of consortium for Mr. Farchi’s wife,” stated attorney Brian Virag, while referring to the claims of the victim's wife that their sex life deteriorated.&nbsp;

Beyond that, the hotel “owed a duty of care to Plaintiffs to provide a clean, safe, and sanitary room&nbsp;that was free of vermin, bed bugs, or similar things, including scorpions,” said the attorney in the Aug. 27 lawsuit.

<h2>Man claims hotel staff made fun of him after the incident</h2>

Farchi said that the luxury resort was aware of an “infestation of poisonous, deadly scorpions,” as per the suit.

“From our understanding, there was some ongoing construction at the time that this incident happened — just before the incident happened and the time the incident happened,” said Virag.

Farchi is waiting for a jury trial to make a decision over whether the hotel needs to compensate the man for the damages, pain, suffering and mental distress.

On December 2026, Farchi said he woke up after experiencing excruciating pain in his groin.

“I just felt like somebody stabbing me in my private area,” said Farchi, while speaking to 8 News Now. “It felt like a sharp glass or a knife," he added.

He claimed that he informed the hotel staff that he was “bitten by a scorpion on my groin/testicles.”

But he said that the hotel staff did not take him seriously and mocked him. “(They were) just holding their groin area and laughing about it. It was really embarrassing," he said.

A Chinese woman faked miscarriages and used forged medical papers to claim maternity insurance worth 66,200 yuan (US$9,300) in Shanghai. The weird incident has attracted massive attention on social media platforms.

A key part of the social insurance system of China is maternity indemnity.&nbsp;

The insurance is funded by employers and covers medical expenses which are related to childbirth and pregnancy and also provide women with financial support during maternity leave.

The 42-year-old woman works for a foreign company in Shanghai and earns more than 30,000 yuan (US$4,200) as monthly salary, reported Shanghai TV. The woman had studied telecommunications and computer science at university.

<h2>How did the woman start claiming fake maternity insurance?</h2>

When the woman was on maternity leave last December, she recalled how she successfully claimed insurance after she suffered a miscarriage two years ago. This incident inspired her to start faking.

With the help of computer software, the woman created false medical documents which included a discharge summary and a maternity certificate, in which she claimed that she had suffered a miscarriage in the hospital.

Shanghai Prosecutor Gong Xiaoting said that the online insurance application system of the country has been designed for convenience and can be exploited illegally by criminals with the help of photo-editing technology.

The woman submitted the online insurance claims twice using forged medical papers and received around 66,200 yuan in maternity benefits.

After every claim, the woman destroyed the related computer records and paper documents.

In 2024, she again made an attempt to use the same method and, with a fabricated miscarriage report applied for more than 40,000 yuan (US$5,600) maternity insurance money, however, her claim was rejected.

She again applied for maternity insurance money in February after the birth of her only child. This time the application was legitimate.

When her document was reviewed, the officials found she had filed five maternity insurance claims in a span of four years and there were various suspicious similarities in the documents. Her case was reported to the police.&nbsp;

The woman then turned herself in and gave back the entire fraudulently obtained money.

"As an older pregnant woman with poor health, I worried about medical costs. In desperation, I impulsively faked miscarriages to get the insurance money. I have already resigned from my job and I deeply regret what I have done," she said.&nbsp;

She was given one-and-a-half-year suspended jail term by the court on August 16 because of her voluntary confession.

In a first, the robot waiters have been introduced in a restaurant called Robot Cafe where they&nbsp;are carrying plates of meals on their inbuilt trays and serving them to the customers in Nairobi.

This is the first of its kind eatery in Nairobi and East Africa where robots are seen moving among the human waiters as mesmerised customers watch and click them while they serve food.

The restaurant had acquired these preprogrammed robots for the entertainment of the customers.&nbsp;

Cafe owner Mohammed Abbas said that he witnessed robot services in Asian and European countries and decided to make an investment in this technology.

"It was very expensive to import the robots," Abbas said but added that the investment has borne fruit since the restaurant is "often busy with curious customers" who are coming to the restaurant only to experience robot service.

"I can say it is something unique because here in our country Kenya, I have never seen a restaurant like this one so I think for me, it is a good idea from the owner of this restaurant," the owner said.

<h2>Can these robot waiters converse with customers?</h2>

The three robots introduced in the restaurant - Claire, R24 and Nadia - have not been completely programmed and hence are unable to have entire conversations with customers.&nbsp;

But these robots have the capability to say "Your order is ready, Welcome". The customers then are required to pick up their food from the tray and then press an exit button.

The waiters can command these robots using an application on an iPad.

In the operations of the cafe, human waiters are still required because they accept orders from customers who are not willing to place orders online.&nbsp;

Then, the waiters are supposed to place the food on the tray of the robot once it is ready and deliver only drinks to the customers in person.

The cafe's manager said that robots cannot replace human waiters as they cannot provide all services.

"At no point are the robots able to fully function in all the services that are supposed to be ongoing in the restaurant without the human touch," said manager John Kariuki.

"The robots are actually way too expensive for us to acquire, so if you are trying to save money, it is not going to work if you choose to go the robotic way," he added.

A new discovery in the mummified brains of residents who lived in 17th-century Italy has left scientists wondering if they were addicted to cocaine or perhaps were consuming its leaves to curb their hunger and thirst.

A new discovery in the mummified brains of residents who lived in 17th-century Italy has left scientists wondering if they were addicted to cocaine or perhaps were consuming its leaves to curb their hunger and thirst. In an unexpected find, the preserved mummified human brains of people have tested positive for cocaine, which has confirmed the use of the drug centuries before it became popular in Europe. The mummified brains were part of the Ca’Granda crypt which is a burial site close to a famous hospital of that time. The hospital Ospedale Maggiore was famous for treating the poor and disadvantaged people of Milan. The University of Milan's researchers conducted different studies on the remains discovered in the crypt and sought to determine what the day's medical treatments may have appeared like. Also Read: Ice melt reveals mummified body of American mountaineer who vanished in Peru 22 years ago In the latest study, which was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science, the scientists carried out toxicology tests on brain matter inside the skulls. Among two of the nine samples tested, the researchers discovered active components of Erythroxylum coca - the plant from which cocaine is derived. The traces of cocaine were found by University of Milan forensic toxicologist Gaia Giordano and her team after the archaeologists found the human remains while wearing protective equipment under the toxicologists' supervision and keeping them in sealed, sterilised jars. Here's why 17th-century poor Italians consumed cocaine Giordano and his team found benzoylecgonine in the brain samples, which hinted that the cocaine had passed from the bodies of the two people before they died. There was also the presence of hygrine - which is an alkaloid present in the leaves of the coca plant Erythroxylum - that confirmed that the people consumed drugs in its plant form. Watch: Peru's 'Alien Mummies' under fresh scrutiny "The molecules detected in these human remains derived from the chewing of coca leaves or from leaves brewed as a tea, consistent with the historical period," concluded the team. The coca, in its tea form, is a mild stimulant in comparison to a strong cup of coffee. The way the former hospital patients were buried also indicated that they were underprivileged, which further hinted that coca leaves were cheap in 1600s Milan. "The effects of the plant, including reduced hunger and thirst, as well as a sense of well-being, were known and controlled by the Spaniards and subsequently diffused to the rest of Europe," wrote the researchers, as they explained how Spanish ruled Milan at the time. However, the researchers were not able to rule out the possibility of coca leaves being administered as a medicine to the patients at the hospital, however, there were no records of the plant's medicinal use during the 1600s. A new breakthrough blood test has been invented by scientists for detecting brain cancer. This test churns faster results and is less invasive in comparison to a surgical biopsy.&nbsp;

More than 100 microlitres of blood are required to carry out this novel 'liquid biopsy' and in an hour the method is able to detect biomarkers related to glioblastoma, which is the deadliest brain tumour.&nbsp;

The accuracy of this test is best in comparison to all other existent markers and tests for glioblastoma. According to the prototype's developers, the test has "near turn-key functionality".

A team of scientists from the United States and Australia made the breakthrough and the University of Notre Dame's scientists led the entire team.&nbsp;

The test has been based on sensing mutated blood biomarkers which are known as epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) and are overexpressed in a few kinds of cancers, like&nbsp;glioblastoma.

The scientists found these blood biomarkers present inside extracellular vesicles which are small packages filled with proteins, lipids, and genetic material which belong to their original cells.

"Extracellular vesicles or exosomes are unique nanoparticles secreted by cells,"&nbsp;said biomolecular engineer Hsueh-Chia Chang from Notre Dame.

"They are big – 10 to 50 times bigger than a molecule – and they have a weak charge. Our technology was specifically designed for these nanoparticles, using their features to our advantage," he added.

A supersensitive biochip was covered with an untreated sample of blood plasma by the researchers to detect the molecules which were released by cancerous tumour cells.

This chip has a tiny sensor which contains antibodies&nbsp;that get attracted to the exosomes carrying mutated EGFRs.

Once these EGFRs get attached to the biochip, a voltage change happens in the plasma solution which if leads to the creation of a high negative charge, indicates the presence of cancer.&nbsp;

<h2>How do scientists carry out the test to detect cancer in one hour?</h2>

In the experiments done, the clinical blood samples were taken from 10 healthy individuals and 20 patients suffering from glioblastoma and the biochip was tested using them.&nbsp;

For every test, one chip was used. The liquid biopsy was finally able to detect the cancer biomarkers with accuracy and also reflected a very low prognostic value, which hinted that the test is highly replicable.

"Our electrokinetic sensor allows us to do things other diagnostics cannot,"&nbsp;said biomolecular engineer Satyajyoti Senapati from Notre Dame.

"We can directly load blood without any pretreatment to isolate the extracellular vesicles because our sensor is not affected by other particles or molecules. It shows low noise and makes ours more sensitive for disease detection than other technologies," he added.&nbsp;

In a new study, the researchers have found that the workers who constructed the famous Giza pyramid complex in Egypt were poisoned by copper.&nbsp;

The study hints that while working on the necropolis, the labourers were most probably exposed to high amounts of copper which may have been the first example of metal contamination in the world.

The discovery of toxic copper in the ancient soil also hinted at the existence of a well-established tool-making industry during that time.

A team of geochemists from France’s Aix-Marseille Université started drilling into the ground in the 4,500-year-old port of Khufu harbour in 2019.&nbsp;

This is the oldest port ever known in the city and is close to the site where the pyramids of pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are present.

The samples collected were examined by the scientists using a technique called plasma-less spectrometry which helps measure the levels of copper as well as other metals like aluminum, iron, and titanium.

<h2>What did copper contamination hint at?</h2>

In a new study, the same team - after using carbon dating - reported that the copper contamination probably started around 3265 BCE which meant that the humans had occupied the area 200 years earlier than previously believed.&nbsp;

After 750 years, the contamination peaked and eventually disappeared around 1000 BCE. The levels of copper were “5 to 6 times higher than the natural background,” said Alain Véron, a faculty member at France’s Aix-Marseille University who worked on the study, while speaking to Eos.

Workers who built Egypt's famous Giza pyramid complex were poisoned. Here's why

In a breakthrough study, the scientists have now hinted that the beginning of the universe may not have started from the Big Bang.

As per the new theory of cosmology, the universe may have "bounced" from the phase of contraction to that of expansion and vice versa.&nbsp;

In a recent study, scientists suggested that the dark matter was most probably composed of black holes when the universe was transiting from its last contraction to the ongoing expansion phase, which took place before the Big Bang.&nbsp;

This scenario of the generation of dark matter can be formed by future gravitational wave observatories, which can detect the gravitational waves generated during the process of black hole formation if the hypothesis is correct.

The cosmic microwave background and the stellar movements in galaxies have indicated that dark matter is present in 80 per cent of all matter in the universe. However, scientists have still not been able to understand what the dark matter is made of.

<h2>Here's what the universe was like before the Big Bang</h2>

The researchers, in a new study, explored the scenario when dark matter was filled with primordial black holes which were formed because of density fluctuations that occurred during the last contraction phase of the universe.&nbsp;

It was observed that during this bouncing cosmology, the universe most likely contracted and became 50 orders of magnitude smaller than its present size. It also hinted at the presence of dark matter and black holes in the universe which existed before the Big Bang.

"Small&nbsp;primordial black holes&nbsp;can be produced during the very early stages of the universe, and if they are not too small, their decay due to Hawking radiation [a hypothetical phenomenon of black holes emitting particles due to quantum effects] will not be efficient enough to get rid of them, so they would still be around now,"&nbsp;said Patrick Peter, director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), who was not involved in the study, while speaking to Live Science.

"Weighing more or less the mass of an&nbsp;asteroid, they could contribute to dark matter, or even solve this issue altogether," he added.&nbsp;

"This work is important in the sense that it provides a natural way of forming small yet still present black holes forming dark matter in a framework which is not the usual one based on inflation," Peter stated.&nbsp;

A new trend of real-life running in Cambodia’s historic Angkor Wat and other temples has gone viral, inspired by the popular video game 'Temple Run'. This has left conservationists concerned about the place.&nbsp;

Conservationists&nbsp;have said that such running is denigrating the almost 900-year-old sculptures and also increasing the risk of irreparable damage.

People have been sharing their videos of running down narrow stone pathways, with sounds from the&nbsp;Temple Run video game overlapping the video, across TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and other social media platforms.

Some of these videos have got more than two million views.&nbsp;

<h2>Conservationists not happy with people running in temples&nbsp;</h2>

Expressing concern over the growing trend, conservationist Simon Warrack said that the nearly millennia-old ruins at Angkor can face potential damage and added that this also portrays cultural and religious insensitivities.&nbsp;

“You wouldn’t run through St Peters in Rome or any Western church, so why is it OK to do it in Cambodia?” Warrack said, as reported by the South China Morning Post.&nbsp;

“It’s not just potential damage to the stones by people bumping into them and falling or knocking things over – which is real – but it’s also damage to the spiritual and cultural value of the temples," he added.

Warrack said he has discussed the issue with Cambodian counterparts and officials who look after the complex.&nbsp;

“Angkor Wat is still deeply revered by the people. Every stone is considered to contain the spirits of the ancestors," he said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Cambodia country director of the World Monuments Fund Ginevra Boatto said, “While the trend has temporarily boosted online interest in Angkor, it’s essential to promote safe access, educational visitation, and respect for the local religious, spiritual and social significance of the sites.

She added that trends of the new visitors should be “carefully managed to prevent any negative impact."&nbsp;

Hans Leisen, who once headed a German government-funded conservation project, said, “It’s nonsense. If you’re running through the temple, you will not see the beauty of the carvings. And if you fall or stumble, you’ll touch a wall to stabilise yourself and endanger the fragile carvings.”
