In a shocking discovery, a Canadian man spotted a mysterious hole on the surface of the Earth while looking through Google Maps. Upon investigation of the never-known pit, it was found to be a massive crater created by an ancient meteor.

Here's how the stunning discovery of the crater was made

Canadian man Joel Lapointe was checking the locations close to Quebec's Côte-Nord region on Google Maps as he was planning to go on a camping trip.

However, his research of the place on Google Maps soon took a sharp turn when he discovered that there was a 'suspicious pit.'

Through the Google Maps application, the man was able to understand that this pit was fifteen kilometres in diameter.

However, the way the pit was curved appeared unnatural to the man.

Lapointe then saw a ring of mountains which was around eight kilometres in diameter and was surrounding the nearby Marsal Lake.

He gave his findings to expert researcher and French geophysicist Pierre Rochette who then found out that the pit is likely to be the site where an ancient meteor may have crashed.

"Looking at the topography, it's very suggestive of impact," said Rochette, while speaking to the CBC.

What's inside this mysterious crater on Earth?

The geophysicist tested the material samples found in the pit and discovered that zircon - the mineral which preserves microscopic damages caused by the impact of the meteor - was present.

Even though the evidence hinted that the crater was created by an ancient space rock, the experts have suggested that it is better to wait for the results of all the tests before reaching a final verdict.

Talking to CBC, Rochette said that if the pit is actually the meteor's crash site, then this discovery would be "major".

The findings left the Canadian man because he had never thought that the mysterious hole spotted on Google Maps could be a massive crater created by an ancient meteor.

Western University Earth Sciences professor Gary Osinksi said that the pit is a "strong contender" for being a crash site of a meteorite.

"It's quite easy with Google Earth these days to go on and find structures that a circular or semi-circular in origin. But nine times out of 10 they're not [craters}," Osinksi said.

Eerie 'mysterious hole' gets spotted on Earth through Google Maps, its secret is...

Archaeologists have remained puzzled regarding the origin of the iconic standing stones of Stonehenge for more than a hundred years.

The puzzle deepened when the scientists discovered that the altar stone's origin could not be traced back to Scotland but rather appeared to have come from Wales.

In the latest discovery, a new study has found that bluestone slab did not originate from Orkney as was earlier assumed.

"The mystery of where the stone came from is becoming clearer and clearer as we begin to rule out specific areas in north-east Scotland," said Professor Richard Bevins from Aberystwyth University, who is the lead author of the new study.

"This research is radically changing our thinking about the origins of the Altar Stone. It's thrilling to know that our chemical analysis and dating work is slowly unlocking this great mystery," he added.

Origin of Altar Stone

Scientists earlier believed that the smaller 'bluestones' of Stonehenge were brought to the Salisbury Plane from the Preseli Hills in Wales.

But the centre of focus of these bluestones was the Altar Stone, which was always unique.

"The Altar Stone is anomalous in many ways to both the bluestones and the sarsens at Stonehenge. Whilst, at six tonnes, it is nowhere near the size of the sarsens, it is substantially larger than the bluestones, with which it has previously been classed," said Professor Bevins.

It was assumed by the researchers that the strange stone came from the same area which was the origin of other bluestones.

However, the recent analysis of altar stone revealed it did not come from Wales. The researchers found it has remarkable similarity with the Old Red Sandstone which was in the Orcadian Basin in northeast Scotland.

But the latest study has suggested that the stone's origin was not Orkney, as was earlier thought.

"Orkney was a major cultural centre in Neolithic times, as indicated by its profusion of monuments and buildings dating from that time," said Professor Bevins, while speaking to MailOnline:

"There was clearly long-distance communication between these Neolithic communities. In addition, the geology of Orkney was right for a possible match to the Altar Stone. So Orkney seemed a logical place to investigate," he added.

Mystery of Stonehenge deepens as researchers say Altar Stone not from Orkney

In a joint study between NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) and the Hubble Space Telescope, it was observed that Mars may have lost its water because of the seasonal changes on the planet.

More than three billion years ago, the Red Planet was warm and wet and had large water bodies on its surface along with a thicker atmosphere. However, today Mars is barren, dry and cold. So, where exactly did the water disappear?

Mysterious disappearance of Martian water

"There's only two places water can go," said John Clarke of the University of Boston, in a statement. "It can freeze into the ground, or the water molecules can break into atoms, and the atoms can escape from the top of the atmosphere into space," he added.

There is still plenty of water on Mars. It has been observed that vast reservoirs of water are locked deep underground at depths between 11.5 and 20 kilometres (7.1 and 12.4 miles).

The surface of Mars has sufficient water inside it which is the global equivalent layer (GEL) - refers to how deep a planet-wide ocean it can create.

Meanwhile, water-ice in small amounts is also locked inside the shallow permafrost and in the polar ice caps of Mars.

According to John Clarke and his team in the Center for Space Physics at Boston University, it is important to understand the fate of water on Mars for which it is important to track the escapee atoms.

Scientists, by measuring the number of hydrogen atoms going into space and the current escape rate, can trace water's history on the planet.

In the atmosphere of Mars, the sunlight is suspected to have dismantled the water molecules and divided them into two types of atoms - which are hydrogen and deuterium or “heavy hydrogen.”

Mars does not have a magnetic field, unlike Earth, because of which the solar wind directly interacts with the atmosphere.

Because of these interactions, light gases like hydrogen, get stripped from the atmosphere.

Setting an unbelievable Guinness World Record, traveller Indy Nelson visited every country in the world and also ended up getting detained on suspicion of being a spy in some of them.

He was able to navigate his way through various countries, like North Korea, and was also detained four times on suspicion of being a spy in Iran, Libya, Papua New Guinea, and Russia.

And now, after completing his travel, he holds the Guinness World Records title of being the man who has flown on the highest number of airlines.

Indy has boarded 170 unique airlines, most of which were during his 18-month trip to various countries, which he started in 2019, when he was 22.

The record was earlier held by a Japanese man named Ryuji Furusho, who had travelled on 156 airlines between 1996 and 2014.

How did Indy Nelson embark on a world trip?

Indy Nelson first thought of visiting every country on Earth while he was on a spring break trip to North Korea - which he found a “cool country”.

After graduating from college, the traveller took a loan of $80,000 and set off on his journey.

During his journey, he had various experiences, and even found himself in an active war zone.

Indy tried to avoid the conflict zones but he found Africa very difficult because of the volatile nature of some areas.

Indy was detained four times and was interrogated for a total of 24 hours.

The least favourite country of Indy was Comoros, which is a small group of islands off the southeastern coast of Africa. He loved Cambodia, on the other hand and enjoyed the “super friendly” locals.

He said that the way to deal with any kind of problem is to “think of it like a rollercoaster ride.”

“I’m small, 5 ft 4. I’ll bundle up into a little cocoon and put my feet into the back of the seat in front of me if no one’s there. I close my eyes and don’t get any headaches," he said.

In an incident similar to the Chinese spy balloons which were spotted flying over the United States last year, another strange-looking balloon was spotted by the residents flying in the sky of Denver.

The balloon was spotted flying over the Mile High City as the residents reported it to KDVR, a local news channel, which was the first one to announce the mysterious sighting on Friday (Sep 6).

As reported by The Hill, the station located the whitish-clear orb which was found to belong to the space exploration and technology company World View Enterprises and was released by its employee in northern Arizona last Saturday (Aug 30).

The balloon was launched by the company to study solar radiation in the stratosphere.

“This is a more sophisticated system that allows us to fly and navigate in the stratosphere for days, weeks and months at a time,” said the vice president of marketing and communications at World View, Phil Wocken, while speaking to the outlet.

The balloon, which was flying at 73,000 feet, more than 30,000 feet above the commercial airspace, has been “carrying a payload for NASA,” said Wocken.

This was one of the Stratollite balloons owned by the company which is similar to a weather balloon. However, it fails to pop when it flies at high altitudes.

The company, however, stated that the technology can be used for measuring different variables like tracking storm systems, wildfires and greenhouse gases.

On the basis of the trajectory, Wocken said that the balloon was spotted hanging around the Denver metro before the winds carried it southwest.

In a shocking incident, a Chinese man recently remained for three days with a cockroach lodged in his throat after inhaling it mistakenly while asleep.

The 58-year-old man visited the Hainan Medical University after suffering from yellow phlegm, constant cough and a weird odour in his mouth for three days, reported Chinese news portal Hi News.

How did the doctor detect the cockroach?

Deputy Chief Physician of the Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine Department, Dr Lin Ling, was informed that the patient felt like something crawled inside his nostril while he was sleeping, after which the cough started. However, the doctor did not think much about it.

The man had earlier visited an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist who failed to find anything in the upper respiratory tract, which left Dr Ling more puzzled.

He then decided to carry out a chest CT scan of the man and found a shadow in the "posterior basal region of the right lower lobe," which indicated the lodging of a foreign item. He then suggested bronchoscopy to the patient.

How surgery to remove the cockroach was carried out?

The doctor performed a preoperative bronchoscopy to check for any “contraindications” after which the surgery was carried out the next day, during which Ling found that there was something that had wings in the bronchial tubes and was wrapped with phlegm, which was revealed it to be the cockroach.

"During the operation the next day, I clearly saw something with wings in the bronchus. The foreign body was wrapped in a lot of phlegm. After sucking out the surrounding phlegm, the foreign body was exposed. It was a cockroach. At the same time, the secretions around the cockroach were repeatedly washed until they were completely cleaned out. After the operation, the patient felt very relaxed and felt very good. The cough and yellow phlegm were reduced, and there was still a little bit of odour," said Dr Lin Ling, while speaking to Seehua.com.

After the surgery, the patient's condition improved but in a test, it was found that phlegm was infected with Clostridium perfringens, due to which he was administered targeted medication and expectorant. It took him five days to recover and get discharged from the hospital.

A company in China has been sued by its two colleagues for terminating their employment after they were found to be having an extra-marital affair and openly kissing each other in the working space.

The man, who has been identified as Liu, and the woman, who is known as Chen, were working in the same department of a pharmaceutical company in Sichuan province, southwestern China, as reported by City Locale.

Their extra-marital affair was revealed when the wife of Liu shared the couple's chat records with the tennis chat group and the general manager of the company in March 2020, which led to their subsequent termination.

In the messages, the couple was seen exchanging messages like “I love you” and “I want to look at you all the time”.

Here's how the company dealt with the adulterous couple

After the couple's affair was exposed, Liu applied for leave to “take care of family issues” and the husband of Chen confronted the couple in front of other colleagues.

However, the couple's affair continued and they were seen kissing each other again at work.

In October 2020, a female colleague asked Chen to stop her behaviour which turned into an argument.

A joint complaint letter was submitted to the general manager by seven colleagues the next day.

After this, the company fired Liu and Chen while stating that they “went off the rails and violated rules outlined in the employee handbook”.

The employees filed lawsuits against the company. In the lawsuit, Chen has demanded compensation of 26,000 yuan (US$3,700) and Liu asked for more than 230,000 yuan (US$32,000).

Chinese company fires two employees for having extramarital affair, kissing in office; gets sued

United States President Joe Biden's vacations have left Americans astonished, as the leader was seen on beaches almost as many days as he was in the office.

The 81-year-old commander-in-chief has taken 532 vacation days in a span of less than four years, which is almost 40 per cent of the 1,326 days he has remained in office.

An average American gets 11 days of vacation in a year, which means they will need to work approximately 48 years to accumulate 532 vacation days, according to data compiled by the Republican National Committee.

“The image of Biden fast asleep and lying flat on his back in his chair at the beach while America and the world are on fire will define the Biden presidency,” said Mark Paoletta, who was White House budget office's general counsel under former president Donald Trump.

“Inflation has been out of control; prices still way too high; our border overrun with millions of illegal aliens committing violent crimes on our citizens; the world in a perilous state; and all Biden wants to do is go on vacation and check out — for more than 530 days,” he added.

The RNC stated that Biden was having fun in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware last Saturday which was his “16th straight day on vacation.”

According to media reports, Biden has been maintaining a lower public profile since late July after withdrawing his candidacy from the presidential elections.

Biden breaks vacation records of all previous US presidents

Biden was on personal overnight trips away for all or part of 382 days of his first 957 days of presidency, which made him the most idle commander-in-chief of the United States, reported The New York Post.

Biden’s 40% out-of-office ratio has surpassed the record of former president Donald Trump, who used 26% of his presidency for going on personal trips.

Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama were on vacation for just 11% of their two-term presidencies and Jimmy Carter took off on 79 days, which was 5% of his single term in office.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said that Biden should do a favour to Americans by taking more time off.

The latest advertisement of a lip gloss stick created by a Chinese cosmetics brand is at the centre of a storm and has been called "vulgar" because it features a female model kneeling provocatively close to the image of the lip gloss - which is shaped like a penis.

The uproar started on September 2 when a blogger, who has more than 5 million followers and is known as "Bunny Class", slammed the latest promotional design and tactics of the company on Weibo and said that they were excessively “teasing”.

The advertisement was then significantly criticised for disrespecting women.

While speaking to the South China Morning Post, co-founder of Equality, a Beijing-based NGO focused on gender equality Feng Yuan said the company's marketing strategies exhibited a “male gaze”.

“Employing a male gaze that presents women as sexual objects for male pleasure will likely alienate women who have an increasing self-awareness. This approach often leads to feelings of disgust, anger, and resistance,” she said.

“From the perspective of online criticism, the effect has been counterproductive. The backlash reflects the sharp eyes and strong voices of young women today. They are asserting their autonomy by exercising their right to make choices as consumers,” Feng added.

Company faces backlash for 'absurd' naming of lip colours

The criticism further moved towards how the company has named its lip colours which had colloquial references to male and female genitalia.

“It’s quite difficult to envision a lip gloss for girls called ‘Kiss Little Juju’. While there is no direct translation for ‘juju’ in Chinese, it’s a homophone for ‘JJ’, isn’t it? So, the term essentially means ‘kissing penis’, right?” wrote one observer on social media.

Responding to the backlash, the company said, “The customer service team is currently unaware of the issues and will forward them to a specialist for verification.”

The netizens called the brand "disgusting" and said it has been disrespecting women.

“Who would buy this lipstick? If someone asks what the shade is called, how could you say ‘Kiss Little Juju’ with a straight face?,” said one person.

“I thought it was some kind of sex toy advertisement based on the photo,” wrote another user.

Chinese cosmetics brand faces severe criticism for ‘vulgar’ ad of penis-shaped lip gloss

Britain's former RAF engineer and his wife have become the first couple in the country to have signed up using a double suicide pod to die together.

The couple, Peter and Christine Scott, have been married for 46 years and took the decision to die in a suicide pod after 80-year-old Christine, who was earlier a nurse, was diagnosed with early-stage vascular dementia weeks ago.

The British couple has decided they will travel to Switzerland where they will end their lives in each other's arms by using the death capsule Sarco.

The couple informed their family members about their tragic decision after suffering in a failing NHS and losing their life savings and home in the process to pay burdening care costs. The couple's son and daughter have reluctantly agreed to their decision.

The couple have six grandchildren and they are now making their registrations with Swiss-based organisation The Last Resort which offers the service of assisted dying in Sarco. This novel death capsule was unveiled in July.

Inside the pod, once the process of dying is activated, air - which is filled with 21 per cent oxygen and 79 per cent nitrogen - gets replaced with 100 per cent nitrogen.

In the process, the occupant slowly becomes unconscious and eventually dies in less than 10 minutes.

It was created by Australian-born Philip Nitschke, who has been nicknamed Doctor Death. He said that the first suicide will happen soon.

Here's why the couple chose assisted dying

The Scotts have decided to wait till the machine's new twin model gets launched later this year.

In an interview from their home in the Suffolk village of Mellis, the couple spoke about their plans and hoped that it would build more pressure on campaigns calling for allowance of assisted dying in the United Kingdom.

"We have had long, happy, healthy, fulfilled lives but here we are in old age and it does not do nice things to you," Peter said.

"The idea of watching the slow degradation of Chris's mental abilities in parallel to my own physical decline is horrific to me. Obviously, I would care for her to the point I could not, but she has nursed enough people with dementia during her career to be adamant she wants to remain in control of herself and her life. Assisted dying gives her that opportunity and I would not want to go on living without her," he added.

"We understand other people may not share our feelings and we respect their position. What we want is the right to choose. I find it deeply depressing we can't do that here in the UK," the former RAF engineer said.

"Yet look at the alternative. The chances of getting prompt NHS treatment for the ailments of old age seem pretty remote so you end up trapped by infirmity and pain. I don't want to go into care, to be lying in bed dribbling and incontinent – I don't call that a life. Finally, the Government swoops in to take your savings and your house to pay for it all," he added.

Peter said that he is going through all the paperwork currently which is required for the application. However, he is worried about Christine's application because it is difficult to get permission for assisted suicide for dementia.

While speaking to The Daily Mail, Dr Nitschke said that the couple's suicide pod is ready for launch. "The capsule for two people works exactly the same as the single Sarco but there is only one button so they will decide between them who will push it. Then they'll be able to hold each other and one of them will push the button," he said.

Inside the pod, a camera has been installed which will record their final moments before death.

Recently, scientists were caught off guard when an undetected asteroid crashed into the atmosphere of Earth on Wednesday (Sep 4) and burned in space.

The astronomers spotted the asteroid just eight hours before it turned into a fireball above the Philippines.

However, asteroid 2024 RW1 - which crashed into the atmosphere of the Earth - was too small to cause any damage.

But its late detection and crash into the atmosphere of Earth reminded experts of the dangers which have been lurking in the solar system.

Here are six asteroids which carry the risk of crashing into Earth

The experts have warned that from 'Valentine's Day asteroid' to other space rocks, six asteroids stand a chance of smashing into the Earth. These asteroids are:

1. Bennu
Diameter: 1,574 ft
Chances of collision: 1/2,700 on September 24, 2182
2. 1950 DA
Diameter: 6,561 ft
Chances of collision: 1/34,500 on March 16, 2880
3. 2023 TL4
Diameter: 1,083 ft
Chances of collision: 1/181,000 on October 10, 2119
4. 2007 FT3
Diameter: 2,165 ft
Chances of collision: 1/11.5 million on October 5, 2024
5. 2023 DW
Diameter: 166 ft
Chances of collision: 1/1,584 on February 14, 2046
6. 1979 XB
Diameter: 2,165 ft
Chances of collision: 1/1.8 million on December 14, 2113

How dangerous can be the collision of the asteroid into Earth?

The collision of asteroids into Earth is not an uncommon event. According to NASA, nearly 48.5 tonnes of meteoric material falls on Earth every day.

However, a lot of them just burn up in the atmosphere and produce flashing lights that are recognised as shooting stars.

The space rocks which are big enough to punch through the atmosphere and collide with Earth are rare and do not come inside the orbit of Earth.

It is very well known how a six-mile-wide (9.65km) asteroid crashed into the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico 66 million years ago and led to the extinction of dinosaurs as well as created a 115-mile (185km) wide crater.

However, the Earth is safe as for now and faces very little asteroid threat.

Speaking to MailOnline, senior public astronomy officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich Dr Greg Brown said, "As of today, there are no known asteroids that are both large enough to be of concern and have a sizeable chance to impact the Earth."

According to the experts, if asteroids hit Earth anytime soon they are most likely going to fall over the ocean or over the remote regions.

The space rocks which are big enough to punch through the atmosphere and collide with Earth are rare and do not come inside the orbit of Earth. Watch: China's plan: Nuclear warheads for asteroid defence It is very well known how a six-mile-wide (9.65km) asteroid crashed into the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico 66 million years ago and led to the extinction of dinosaurs as well as created a 115-mile (185km) wide crater. However, the Earth is safe as for now and faces very little asteroid threat. Speaking to MailOnline, senior public astronomy officer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich Dr Greg Brown said, "As of today, there are no known asteroids that are both large enough to be of concern and have a sizeable chance to impact the Earth." According to the experts, if asteroids hit Earth anytime soon they are most likely going to fall over the ocean or over the remote regions. (With inputs from agencies)

A common concern of all those investing their hard-earned money to earn some good interest amount is the taxes that will be levied on them.

First, let's understand how taxes are charged on the interest we earn over the investments made in different instruments.

According to the tax system in India, the Long Term Capital Gain (LTCG) tax of 12.5% is charged when the asset is sold after 24 months and the profit earned is more than Rs. 1.25 lakh in a fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the Short Term Capital Gain (STCG) of 20% is charged when the asset is sold in less than 12 months.

In the case of fixed deposits, the tax on the interest earned is calculated on the basis of the income tax slab.

Those who fall under the 30% tax slab, will pay 30% income tax and 4% cess on the interest earned.
