In a recent study, it has been revealed that when the Starship rocket of SpaceX exploded during its second flight on November 18, 2023, it led to the formation of a temporary 2,000-km wide hole in the atmosphere of the Earth.

The rocket had exploded just minutes after the launch when the Super Heavy booster of the rocket blew up at an altitude of 90 kilometres.

A few minutes later, another explosion occurred at an altitude of about 150 kilometres which involved the rocket's upper stage.

The research, which was published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, showed that these explosions disrupted the ionosphere, which is a region of the upper atmosphere that is located between 80 to 650 kilometres above the Earth.

As reported by Futurism, the study's lead author and atmospheric physicist at Russia’s Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics Yury Yasyukevich said that sound waves were produced by the explosions which neutralised nearby charged atoms and led to the "disappearance" of the electrons.

A high-intensity eruption occurred in the underwater volcano Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai on January 15, 2022, which led to a powerful tsunami throughout Tonga.

But this event also had another lasting effect which was the launch of high amounts of aerosol and water vapor plumes towards the sky. This was the largest underwater explosion to have ever been recorded by modern scientific instruments.

The scientists examined how the eruption of Volcano Hunga impacted the climate in the Southern Hemisphere in the next two years.

Here's how volcanic eruption impacted climate

The scientists discovered that there was a stronger cooling effect from volcanic aerosols reflecting sunlight into outer space after the eruption in comparison to the warming that happened because of heat getting trapped by the water vapours in the atmosphere.

However, by the end of 2023, more of the effects of the volcano had dissipated.

Satellite data was used by the researchers to examine how stratospheric aerosols, gases, and temperatures had changed after the eruption.

It was discovered that the Hunga eruption poured 150 metric megatons of water vapour into the stratosphere. This is a very high amount and has increased global levels of stratospheric water vapour by about 10 per cent.

In the tropical stratosphere, the massive water injection led to the cooling of temperatures by 4°C in March and April of 2022.

The temporary cooling led to the formation of a secondary circulation pattern because of which ozone levels started reducing throughout 2022.

The Hunga eruption also led to the release of 0.5 and 1.5 metric megatons of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere.

Sulfur dioxide produces sulfate aerosols which reflect sunlight and can lead to a reduction in surface radiative forcing or the difference between outgoing and incoming radiation.

This can also cause global cooling if enough amount of aerosol is loaded as was the case in the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo, during which 20 metric megatons of sulfur dioxide was released.

The Hunga aerosol load was not huge and had confined effects on the Southern Hemisphere in 2022 and 2023.

The European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has captured the intriguing but spooky 'smiley face'-shaped salt deposit on Mars, which has left the netizens stunned. According to the scientists, this salt deposit may have concealed the remnants of the last surviving life forms on Mars. Mars had vast lakes and rivers billions of years ago, which disappeared during a catastrophic global freeze. The researchers have proposed that this emoticon-shaped salt deposit may be harbouring hardy microbes. Also Read: Mars once had water but now it's barren. India to be part of 'groundbreaking' lunar nuclear plant set-up with Russia and China? Moscow says...

In a historic achievement, Chandrayaan-3 became the first lunar mission to have detected more than 250 seismic signatures from the south pole of the Moon, since the Apollo missions.

These 250 seismic signals included 50 unique signals that are likely to have links with moonquakes, which refer to the earthquake on the lunar soil.

This is the first time seismic data has been collected from the South Pole of the lunar surface and also the first time such an activity has been recorded since the Apollo missions.

According to the media reports, 250 seismic signatures have been detected by the Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA) aboard the Vikram Lander during its operational period from August 24 to September 4, 2023, between the coordinates of 69.37 degrees south and 32.32 degrees east.

However, the remaining 50 signals were classified as "uncorrelated" and the scientists were not able to draw a connection between them and any mission-related activities. This raised the possibility of these signals being produced from real moonquakes.

These findings related to the moonquakes were mentioned in a recent paper published in ICARUS, which is a famous scientific journal.

The study's results were published in Archeology Reports Online.

“The new archaeological evidence does not prove that the local story was true but instead demonstrates that the legend likely originated in Drumelzier itself, rather than being brought here by a wandering medieval storyteller who roped in various random sites in the vicinity,” said Toolis.

“Perhaps it originated as a folk memory, to be embellished over the centuries before it spread far and wide and changed out of almost all recognition," he explained.

The discovery helps “[to paint] a much darker picture” of the wise and revered Arthurian figure," said Toolist. “That of a rather pitiful fellow prone to uttering nonsensical riddles and bewildering prophecies, and kept prisoner by an obscure petty tyrant of a forgotten kingdom, before dying a gruesome death, the victim of royal intrigue," he added.

According to Toolis, who is GUARD Archaeology's CEO in Glasgow, such a grave structure in the region would have been “quite rare” for the period in which it may have existed. “It seems to be a remarkable coincidence that the one hillfort associated with this local legend dates to exactly the same time as the story is set,” he said. Watch: The King of Swaziland is marrying for the 16th time, his father had 125 wives The study's results were published in Archeology Reports Online.
The archaeologists stumbled upon the 26,000-year-old footprints of humans and animals after it was unearthed by the construction workers at the site which once was a unique settlement in the Ice Age.

The discovery was made during the construction of a housing development project in Madrid as the workers found footprints and stone artefacts dating back 26,000 years.

After this, the site was declared a BIC Asset of Cultural Interest and construction of the building was stopped to preserve history.

The archaeologists then began excavating the site in search of more relics. A team of 30 people, which included geologists, technicians, palaeontologists, and restorers, gathered and started working on the site.

Speaking to The Olive Press, project researcher Juan Sanguinos said that the archaeologists have been planning to ask the Madrid City Council to leave the place as an archaeological reserve for future investigation.

The ancient footprints were discovered by construction workers in the Mendez Alvaro district of Madrid which led to the excavation of the site.

In the excavation, one thing was clear that rhinoceros and herbivores had walked on this site 26,000 years ago.

After investigation, 26,000-year-old stone relics were also discovered by the archaeologists after which the site was identified as a Pleistocene settlement, which means from the Ice Age.

Upon survey of 2,000 square meters of area, it was also discovered that several rivers had merged in the paleosurface. Hence, animals and humans came to drink water here because of which their footprints were present here.
