The diplomatic relations between Russia and Estonia were downgraded on Monday after the latter's ambassador was ordered to leave Russia, as the country was accused of "total Russophobia".

As the Estonian ambassador was expelled, the Russian foreign ministry announced on Monday that the charge d’affaires will head the diplomatic mission of the country.

"The ambassador of the Estonian Republic will have to leave the Russian Federation on February 7," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the diplomatic representation of Estonia will also be downgraded from now.

According to the statement, the measure was adopted after the staff levels were reduced by Estonia at the Russian embassy in Tallinn.

The ministry added that the step was taken in retaliation for Estonia’s “new unfriendly step to radically reduce the size of the Russian Embassy in Tallinn.”

“In recent years, the Estonian leadership has purposefully destroyed the entire range of relations with Russia. Total Russophobia, the cultivation of hostility towards our country have been elevated by Tallinn to the rank of state policy,” read the statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry on Monday.

Earlier this month, the Estonian foreign ministry asked Russia to cut down the number of staff present in the embassy to eight diplomats and 15 technical, service and administrative staff members to “reach parity in embassy staff” by February 1.

The chances of China facing a major Covid-19 rebound in the coming next two or three months is unlikely as 80 per cent of the country's population has already been infected by the virus, said a senior government scientist on Saturday. The pandemic may spread widely and increase infections in a few areas due to people's mass movement during the country's ongoing Lunar New Year holiday season, however, China is less likely to face a second Covid wave in the near term, claimed China Centre for Disease Control and Prevention's chief epidemiologist Wu Zunyou on the Weibo social media platform.

Across China, millions of Chinese citizens have been travelling for holiday reunions after the Covid-19 curbs were recently eased, which raised fears of fresh Covid-19 outbreaks in the country's rural areas, which are not well-equipped to handle massive surge in infections.

The peak of the number of coronavirus patients admitted in emergency rooms, fever clinics and in critical conditions has already passed in China, said a National Health Commission official on Thursday.

As per the government data, around 60,000 Covid-19 patients have died in hospital till January 12, almost a month after the zero-Covid policy was abruptly scrapped by the Chinese government.

However, some experts stated that the figure given by the government is an undercount of the complete impact, as it fails to include many people who died at home, and because various doctors have accepted that they were discouraged from writing Covid-19 as the cause of death.

A man recently returned a book which was due in 1964, as per England's Dudley Library. A staff working in the library was left shocked when a guy submitted a book for return which was due in 1964. According to the report published in Metro News, pensioner David Hickman, aged 76, came to return the overdue book after 58 years and accrued staggering late fees of GBP 42,340.

England’s library waives staggering late fees for book returned after 58 years

Indian state Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the resting place of Ahom kingdom's royal families, 'Maidams', located in the Charaideo district of the state will be the sole nomination of India for UNESCO World Heritage Site's tag this year.

The dossier prepared on the ‘maidams’, also called “Assam’s Pyramids”, was selected by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi amongst the 52 heritage sites spread across the nation that are aiming at the coveted tag, said CM Sarma, while addressing the press conference.

The Union Ministry of Cultural Affairs “informed me of this momentous news and the nomination will be submitted to the UNESCO office in Paris tonight”, the chief minister said.

He added that the Ahom dynasty's mound burial system or ‘Maidams’ in Charaideo was listed for the first time in UNESCO’s World Heritage site's tentative list in April 2014, he said.

“It took nine years for the dossier to reach the nomination status from the tentative list and this was possible only due to the initiative of the prime minister,” Sarma stated.

In a major shake-up, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday removed a top minister Aryeh Deri who is also the leader of coalition partner from his nascent cabinet after the Supreme Court gave the ruling against the appointment recently. A statement from Netanyahu's office said the Israeli leader fired Interior and Health Minister Aryeh Deri, who the court decided could not serve as a cabinet minister because of a conviction last year over tax offenses. Netanyahu announced the firing at a meeting of his Cabinet, reported the AP news agency.

The court ruling came as Israel is mired in a dispute over the power of the judiciary.

"It is with a heavy heart, with great sorrow and with an extremely difficult feeling that I am forced to transfer you from your position as a minister in the government," Netanyahu said to Deri, who was given the interior and health portfolios even though he was convicted for tax evasion last year.

Netanyahu's far-right government wants to weaken the Supreme Court by limiting judicial oversight with the aim of granting more power to the politicians. Critics say the move upends Israel's system of checks and balances and imperils democratic fundamentals.

Deri's sacking is also expected to shake Netanyahu's coalition, a union buoyed by ultranationalist and ultra-Orthodox parties, including Deri's Shas, which is the third largest in the government, said the AP report.

Sri Lanka will hold the local council polls on March 9, the country’s election commission announced on Saturday, ending speculation that the election may be postponed again due to the prevailing economic crisis in the country. The local election was earlier postponed by six months as the country was gripped by unprecedented economic turmoil which triggered a political crisis and led to the ouster of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The officials of the election commission announced that the local polls for the 340 councils in the island nation will take place on March 9.

The opposition parties have been pressing for the local election, saying it will give people a chance to show displeasure over the government’s handling of the economic crisis.

The government, however, delayed the local polls and said the time is not suitable to hold the election given the ongoing economic crisis in the country.

The election process will reportedly cost Rs 10 billion which would put additional pressure on the already lean state finances.

The ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) controls a majority of councils after having won the last election held in 2018.

However, the party is in disarray since July when its leader and former President Rajapaksa was ousted in a popular uprising. It has suffered defections with members forming other electoral alliances.

After Rajapaksa’s ouster, Sri Lanka’s Parliament elected then-acting oresident and six-time former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new head of the State. He had the backing of the SLPP, the largest bloc in the 225-member parliament.

The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) is confident that they would win a majority of councils given the ruling party’s seeming unpopularity.
