The prosecutor on Wednesday appealed to the court to sentence eight rugby players to life imprisonment in Argentina while they were being tried for allegedly killing a teenager three years ago outside a nightclub, an incident which left the nation shocked. After the attack, the authorities kept the defendants, aged between 21 and 23, in pre-trial detention.

Prosecutor Juan Manuel Davila while speaking in a court at Dolores, which is 220 kilometres (136 miles) south of Buenos Aires, said, "I ask that they be sentenced to life in prison as co-authors of doubly aggravated homicide" as the crime was not committed in self-defence and was "premeditated”.

An argument had broken out between two groups of people inside a nightclub located in the seaside resort of Villa Gesell on January 18, 2020, after which an 18-year-old law student, Fernando Baez, was attacked by the eight defendants.

The players who belonged to a provincial club in Zarate, which is north of Buenos Aires, beat Baez to death. The surveillance cameras caught the images of the attack.

"They formed a circle around (Baez). They all struck him and when they didn't, they stopped anyone coming to help him," Davila said.

The prosecutor said that, according to the witnesses, racist insults were shouted at the victim by the players as they beat him

Baez family lawyer Fernando Burlando concurred with the request made by the prosecution, saying it was "enough to sentence the defendants to life" behind bars.

As per the prosecution, the attackers preyed on Baez's "defencelessness, with no risk to the pack”.

Argentina: Prosecution seeks life imprisonment for eight rugby players in murder case

Ladakh, the cold desert of India, hidden in the lap of the Himalayas, has once again become a heated topic of discussion among environmentalists, climate enthusiasts and citizens after activist, innovator and engineer Sonam Wangchuk announced that he will be sitting on a five-day climate fast at the Khardung La Pass from January 26 to appeal the government to provide safeguard to the eco-fragile region.

The scientist-activist who inspired the Bollywood movie 3 idiots' fictional character Phunsukh Wangdu narrated to the world the dire environmental concerns Ladakh is facing and called on the government to fulfil the promise of including the Union territory in the Constitution's Sixth Schedule.

The Sixth Schedule that falls under Article 244 gives the provision for the formation of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs), which enjoy some administrative, judicial and legislative autonomy in the state. Almost 30 members constitute these ADCs and serve a tenure of five years during which they are free to make rules, laws and regulations regarding agriculture, water, forest, health, sanitation, land, village councils, social customs, marriage and divorce, inheritance, town- and village-level policing, mining, etc.

Wangchuk shared a video, "All is not well in Ladakh. Ladakh ki mann ki baat," in which he said that he will camp at Khardung La Pass, which is 18,000 feet above sea level and where the temperature is minus 40°Celsius.

Speaking to WION about the climate fast, Wangchuk said, "The first reason why I am sitting on the five-day climate fast is to appeal for Ladakh's inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and the second reason is that our glaciers and environment cannot be only protected by the government alone and so I appeal the people of India, and in fact the world, to join me and take the pledge to change their lifestyle because the emissions which we are causing is melting the Himalayan glaciers at a rapid speed and we face the fear of very little being left by the end of the century."

"I am appealing to the people of India, especially youth, to join me on January 26 in keeping one-day fast in solidarity with the Himalayas and the glaciers and I want one million people to pledge on that day to change their lifestyles while I sit for five days at 18,000 feet," he told WION, hoping to bring the world's attention to Ladakh and its fragile ecology.

Ladakh and its need for inclusion in Constitution's Sixth Schedule

In the 13-minute video shared by Wangchuk, the scientist had emphasised the need to save glaciers from industrial exploitation and in doing so, had reiterated the demands of locals living in Ladakh to include the Union territory in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard its ecosystem and environment and appealed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the issue.

He had underlined the fact that over 95 per cent of the population in Ladakh is tribal, which makes it eligible for inclusion in the sixth schedule. In the video, he states how the locals had presumed that Ladakh would be included in the Sixth Schedule after Article 370 was abrogated by the Indian government in 2019 and the government promised to ensure that the demand for the Sixth Schedule will be fulfilled.

"I am only appealing to the government to keep their promise. They must have seen all the hurdles when they announced that Ladakh will be considered under the Sixth Schedule. Law ministry, home ministry, and tribal ministry, all had proposed that Ladakh should get some similar safeguards, so I am sure they must have seen those. Ladakh becoming a Union territory is a recent development so I am sure as things change, amendments can be made and that's the beauty of democracy."

January 26 – climate fast or a celebration of the Constitution?

When Wangchuk was quizzed about choosing January 26, when the country celebrates Republic Day, to start the climate fast, he said, "Choosing January 26 was a conscious decision. I find our Constitution very evolved and feel that it does not only tolerate diversity but it promotes and protects diversity. Since the Sixth Schedule is aimed at protecting that diversity, so, I thought of celebrating the Constitution by reminding the leadership and the people of the risk at which these fragile regions, their culture and people stand presently."

Power of sun at minus 40° Celsius

Wangchuk said that sitting at a climate fast in Khardungla pass at minus 40° Celsius may appear difficult, but there are mountaineers out in the world who have faced much worse conditions and sustained themselves.

He joked that he will be just sitting there a "little hungry" and added that he does not aim to present the climate fast as just an emphasis on the climatic crisis the world is facing but wishes to demonstrate to the world the solutions to live in sync with nature.

'Need wisdom to foresee 50 years to save climate'

The scientist explained that the vision to foresee the future in the next 50 years is what is needed to save the environment. He said that democracy teaches people to remain short-sighted and plan for the next five years.

"We do things that may benefit us in five years, without realising that it may become a reason for regret in 50 years. So, democracy teaches us to be clever but not wise. What you need is wisdom for decades rather than cleverness for five years and that's why I think people like me need to raise our voices to remind people and the governments that don't do just quick fixes in five years, think of five decades or more."

"We need wisdom more than cleverness," Wangchuk said as he prepared to give the world the message to save nature and biodiversity for a better and hopeful future for generations to come.

The Doomsday Clock, which the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists had created as an indicator to understand how close the world has reached to the apocalypse, may reach closer to midnight in 2023, said an expert on the existential threat.

Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge's senior research associate Paul Ingram on Monday said that climate change and the threat of nuclear war will act as factors in pushing the arms of the clock towards the time which is symbolic to "doom".

Ingram, who doesn't belong to the group of scientists who will decide the clock's position, said that if a nuclear war breaks out in the world, billions of people will be killed because of its effects on the climate, as it would lead to starvation and disasters.

"It's not just a risk of the detonations, the blasts, the radiation, which everybody is aware of, but it's the global climatic effects that are likely to kill the most people from a nuclear war, probably in the billions," he stated.

Ingram said that however, said that there is still hope amid the concern of disaster looming upon the world.

"I think as the threats get larger and that we become more aware and we understand them better, there is hope. I think there is a growing awareness, I detect, that business as usual is just not an option,” Ingram said.

On Tuesday, the atomic scientists will make an announcement about the doomsday clock, whether its timing will change to 10:00 am (1500 GMT).

Doomsday clock may tick closer to midnight, as experts warn of nuclear war

Islamist fighters set off a bomb then stormed a government building in Somalia's capital on Sunday, killing at least five civilians, the ministry of information said.

Attackers from the al Shabaab group charged into the block that houses the office of Mogadishu's mayor around noon and got caught in a firefight with security forces, the ministry and witnesses said.

Security killed six of the militants and cleared the area by about 6pm local time, the ministry said on its Facebook page.

Al Shabaab has stepped up attacks in a show of resilience since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government launched an offensive against the al Qaeda-linked group in August.

"We were in the office and we were deafened by a blast. We ran out. Gunfire followed," Farah Abdullahi, who works in the mayor's office, told Reuters.

Abdikadir Abdirahman, director of Aamin Ambulance Services, gave a higher estimate of the death count, saying it had transported the bodies of eight civilian victims.

At least another 16 people were injured in the attack, he added.

The mayor's office is in the local government headquarters building in a well-guarded area of Mogadishu.

Roads in the area have concrete barriers and multiple roadblocks. The building is about 1.5 km (1 mile) away from Villa Somalia, the president's office.

Al Shabaab said in a statement its suicide bombers struck, "then foot fighters entered the building after killing the building guards".

The movement, which has been fighting the government since 2006 and seeking to impose its own interpretation of Islamic law, frequently carries out bombings and gun attacks across the country.

In a sign the government was expanding its offensive against the group into the country's south, state TV for Jubbaland, one of the country's semi-autonomous states, reported on Sunday that regional and Somalia federal forces had launched attacks on al Shabaab and taken control of the town of Janay Abdale from the militants.

On Monday, the French government took a step ahead with the widely-debated pensions reform plan, which would increase the retirement age to 64, stating that the top priority must be balancing the system's books.

After the legislation was tabled in the cabinet meeting, which was the last step before it goes for parliamentary debate, Labour Minister Olivier Dussopt said, “Going back on this point (of the age increase) would be giving up on getting the system back in balance.”

The bill would gradually increase the age of retirement from 62 years to 64 years by 2030 and will also increase the minimum years of service people must give to become eligible for a full pension from 42 years to 43 years.

Dussopt stated that the government "disagrees with trade unions", who had led the massive protests and strikes on Thursday in which around 1.1 million people participated to raise their voices against pension reform.

The unions are now planning a fresh strike on January 31 as they have warned that they are ready to step up their actions if the government fails to relent.

On Monday, the French government took a step ahead with the widely-debated pensions reform plan, which would increase the retirement age to 64, stating that the top priority must be balancing the system's books. After the legislation was tabled in the cabinet meeting, which was the last step before it goes for parliamentary debate, Labour Minister Olivier Dussopt said, “Going back on this point (of the age increase) would be giving up on getting the system back in balance.” ALSO READ | Nationwide strike kicks off in France over pension reforms The bill would gradually increase the age of retirement from 62 years to 64 years by 2030 and will also increase the minimum years of service people must give to become eligible for a full pension from 42 years to 43 years. Dussopt stated that amendments that "improve the text without giving up on getting back to balancing the books by 2030, nor the fundamentals of the reform" will be accepted by the government. The river has been kept stocked with many fishes by the authorities who believe that this will help in attracting dolphins to the river.

Three female journalists have been arrested by Iranian authorities in the last two days, stated the local media on Monday, amid continued protests against the government after the death of Mahsa Amini in judicial custody.

Violent protests have gripped Iran since the 22-year-old Iranian Kurd died on September 16 after she was arrested by the morality police for failing to follow the strict dress code for women in the country.

The authorities stated that hundreds of citizens, which includes security officials, have lost their lives and thousands of people have been arrested in what they call “riots” triggered by the “enemies” of the Islamic republic.

"In the past 48 hours, at least three female journalists, namely Melika Hashemi, Saideh Shafiei and Mehrnoush Zarei, have been arrested in Tehran," stated Tehran journalists' union as quoted by reformist newspaper Etemad.

The paper stated that the officials have transferred three journalists to Evin prison where many people who were arrested earlier in connection with the protests have been locked.

According to the estimates, since the unrest triggered in Israel four months ago, 80 journalists have been so far arrested. The officials gave no reasons for the latest arrests of journalists.
