The Rideau Canal Skateway, which is a 7.8-kilometre long (5-mile) stretch of frozen water and is an iconic tourist place as well as a mode of transport in the capital city of Canada, is likely to remain closed for the first time since it was built in 1971.

Ottawa is seeing unusually warm weather as temperatures soared as high as 10ºC (50ºF) which led to occasional puddles and cracks above the patch of ice, which usually remains strong to handle around 20,000 skaters a day.

“I’m devastated,” Barbara Hyde said, as she strolled along the canal’s sidewalk, where usually she would skate around 10 to 20 times in a normal season. “I can’t believe I’m not skating. It’s ridiculous,” she said.

The closure of the skating rink will deprive visitors and residents of a unique feature of one of the coldest capital cities in the world. The place not only brings tourism dollars during the Winterlude festival in February, but it is also a key part of the city’s fabric.

Ottawa Tourism’s spokesperson Jantine Van Kregten said, “As an Ottawan it’s sad; that’s the best word I can use. If you had asked me whether it was possible that we could go a winter without opening, I would not have believed it.”

With the closure of the frozen canal, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the organisers of the winter festival were forced to become creative. The ice dragon boat, the hockey matches and the annual curling were cancelled.

The Winterlude Triathlon, in which people usually skate, run for a combined 19 kilometres and cross-country ski switched their skis and snow shoes this year. Early in the festival, ice sculptures along Sparks Street were carved near Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office, however, they did not last long in the heat.

For the first time in 52 years, world’s longest skating rink to close due to global warming

As per the draft federal rules released on Wednesday, almond, soy, oat and other drinks that have been billing themselves as milk can continue using the term.

The officials of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued guidance which stated that plant-based beverages have not been pretending to be products from dairy animals – and that the US consumers don’t get confused by the difference.

For years, dairy producers have appealed to the FDA to crack down on plant-based drinks as well as other products which they allege have been masquerading as animal-based foods and creating confusion around the real meaning of the term “milk”.

As per the draft rules, the agency has recommended that beverage makers clearly label their products, like soy milk or cashew milk, as sourced from the plant.

The rules also appeal for voluntary extra nutrition labels to be clearly stated if the drinks contain lower levels of nutrients, like calcium, magnesium or vitamin D, compared to dairy milk. In a statement, FDA commissioner Robert Califf said that the new guidelines are aimed at providing clear nutrition information to consumers.

The draft rules will not apply to non-dairy products other than beverages like yoghurt. The National Milk Producers Federation, which is an industry trade group, appreciated the call for adding information about extra nutrition on drink labels, but added that it rejected the conclusion of the FDA that plant-based drinks can be termed as milk because it’s a “common and usual name”.

The Good Food Institute, which is a group that promotes plant-based products, raised objections against the extra labelling.

A new range of toys with mental and physical disabilities was unveiled by Lego which includes characters with missing limbs, Down’s syndrome and anxiety.
Lego Friends characters’ new collection is an attempt at reflecting diversity and “enable more children to feel represented during play”.

Not just mini figures are included in the range of Lego Friends, but also in a television series. The new generation of toys has been created to “celebrate diverse friendships in the modern world”, the firm said, as well as enhance the perspectives of children on physical disabilities, ethnicity and mental health.

The characters included in the new range have different skin tones and suffer various physical disabilities as well as vitiligo, which is an autoimmune disorder due to which there is a loss of pigment in the skin.

“The new sets and series will feature characters with limb difference, Down’s syndrome, anxiety, vitiligo, and a dog with a wheelchair,” the Danish company said in a statement.

Head of product for Lego Friends’ Tracie Chiarella said, “We understand that children want the characters they encounter to be more like the diverse personalities they meet in real life.”

Lego stated that its research shows around three-quarters of children feel a lack of toys with characters that represent them. It stated that around 80 per cent of children wish to have toys that look like them and reflect their personality.

According to a new report published by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), the algorithm of Facebook has automatically created more than 100 pages on the social media platform of US-designated terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

TTP started as the Google Transparency Project in 2016 and today it has expanded and covers various major tech companies. A non-profit watchdog created during the Reagan administration, the Capital Research Centre, has called TTP a left-leaning platform although the group does not claim to have any political bent.

According to TTP's report, 108 pages for Islamic State were created by Facebook, along with dozen of other pages belonging to other terrorist groups, which includes Al-Qaeda. The report further claimed that the platform automatically generated the terrorist group pages as users "checked in" to terrorist organisations or listed the groups in their profiles.

In its report, the Tech Transparency Project further claimed that these pages were generated by Facebook despite its policy banning Al-Qaeda and Islamic State and claims of its algorithm being trained to detect them.

Many of these automatically generated pages of terrorist groups have been on Facebook for years and posts filled with terrorist propaganda and imagery have been getting likes. The organisation stated that Facebook can be held responsible for these pages as the social media platform is not just hosting but actually creating them.

As per the TTP report, this process of automatic creation of terrorist pages is a result of a particular quirk. It stated that if a user lists a school, location or employer in their profile or a place is checked in by a user, then Facebook automatically creates a new page for the school, place or employer, if they don't have any existing one.

Previously, the police had claimed that it appeared that the 45-year-old Bulley had gone into the river adding that her disappearance did not appear suspicious. The body was discovered by the police about a mile from where she was last spotted in St Michael's small village on Wyre.

Jewels and two 16th-century sculptures belonging to French Renaissance art have been kept on display at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1908. Now, with an unusual agreement and modern technology, France will make precise 3D copies of these jewels and sculptures which will be installed in the French castle, which used to be the home of the originals long back.

The plan of creating an exact 3D copy of the original is the result of the rare partnership between the Met or the New York museum and the Dordogne department in southwestern France.

The statues, which are from the early 1500s and are the creation of an anonymous sculptor, represent scenes from the Bible entitled "Entombment of Christ" and "Pieta With Donors."

In the coming months, a tourism promotion agency based in Dordogne, Semitour will work along with the Atelier of Fac-Similes Perigord (AFSP) for making the replicas in the coming months.

For around 400 years, the originals were installed in the chapel of the Biron chateau in the Dordogne. The sprawling fortress which has been constructed on a strategic promontory comprises buildings from various eras and includes a dungeon which dates back to the 12th century.

Dordogne president Germinal Peiro, while visiting the Met, said that the chateau, which has suffered damages and was rebuilt across the centuries, has belonged to the Dordogne department since 1978. He added that the fortress was declared a historic monument by the department.

Met's medieval art curator C Griffith Mann and Perigord atelier's head Francis Rigenbach explained that the artisans will use 3D scanners to create digital images of the sculptures, without moving or disturbing the originals.

"By making a digital 'cast', we can employ non-invasive techniques" to create identical copies, said Rigenbach. Rigenbach added that the replicas will cost around $375,000 and will be placed in their original spots in the Biron chapel.

China on Monday lashed out at the United States saying that Washington made "false" claims about Beijing being on the brink of supplying arms and ammunition to Russia to support its war against Ukraine.

"It is the United States and not China that is endlessly shipping weapons to the battlefield," said China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, while speaking about the US claims.

"We urge the United States to earnestly reflect on its own actions, and do more to alleviate the situation, promote peace and dialogue, and stop shifting blame and spreading false information," he added.

The statement of the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in an interview with CBS, said that China was "considering providing lethal support" to Moscow ranging "from ammunition to the weapons themselves".

Similar comments were made by him in a series of interviews from Germany, where he took part in the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

The accusations of Blinken came in the wake of the straining relationship between the two nations after Washington shot down what it claimed to be a Chinese spy balloon.

Concerns have been raised about China's deepening ties with Russia even after the conflict but Wang Yi maintained that Beijing was only playing a constructive role, and firmly supported the idea of dialogue to resolve conflict.

"We do not accept the United States' finger-pointing on China-Russia relations, let alone coercion and pressure. China's direction on the Ukraine issue can be summed up in one phrase, which is urging peace and promoting dialogue," said spokesman Wang Wenbin.
