7 Countries You Probably Didn’t Know Exist

A small potato-shaped island located in South Pacific, Nauru was once a colony of the German Empire and was called Pleasant Island. More than 10,000 people live on this 8.1 square mile island.

This African island nation lies between Madagascar and Mozambique. The archipelago was created at the crossroads of various civilisations and is known for its history and diverse culture.

A country, which is spread over an area of 10 square miles, Tuvalu is the world’s fourth smallest country. This Polynesian nation, located midway between Australia and Hawaii, has three reef islands and six true atolls.

This country is a cluster of 33 tiny islands located in the central Pacific Ocean. When combined, the total area is around the size of New York City, however, the islands are spread out in such a way that it takes six hours to fly from the first island to the last.

Abkhazia has all the characteristics that can define it as a country – borders, functioning government, ethnic population, national bank, own passports and military. However, it is looked upon as Georgia’s province, a country from which it fought for independence during the early 90s.

Guinea-Bissau is a country which very less people know about, and remains shadowed by its larger and more popular West African neighbour, Guinea. In 1973, after declaring its independence, the name of its capital, Bissau, was included in the name of the country to avoid confusion with Guinea.

An island archipelago, with active volcanoes, beautiful scenery and uncommon Melanesian culture, Vanuatu is located west of Fiji. The country has 13 larger islands and 70 smaller ones. Since it has a volcanic origin, the islands are mountainous and have rain forests.

A tinge of red and pink hue has been observed in the snow by the people residing in Utah, which in turn is making the mountains appear colourful. This natural phenomenon, which is making the mountains look pretty has been nicknamed “watermelon snow”.

What is watermelon snow?

According to experts, this natural phenomenon occurs normally across all mountainous locations in the world. One may feel that the colour of snow is actually changing, however, the colourful hue is a result of the green algae bloom which thrives in cold, snowy environments, as per Scott Hotaling, an assistant professor at Utah State University’s watershed sciences department.

ALSO READ | Bamboo could be a game changer in renewable energy. Here's how

The species of algae which is making Utah's snow colourful is called Chlamydomonas nivalis.

Hotaling said that although the snow appears red in Utah, which is the most common colour that appears in the phenomenon, there are different types of algae which live on snow and ice and can turn the usually white frozen precipitation into various types of colours like purple, green and orange.

“(The algae is) normally in this kind of dormant cyst form, and when there’s enough meltwater in the snowpack and enough nutrients, like during spring, that cyst form is triggered out of dormancy,” Hotaling said while speaking to CNN.

“It has this little flagella that can swim through the snowpack to the surface, (where it) experiences a lot of solar radiation and it blooms. That bloom is a sign of the algae’s reproductive stage, during which there’s a secondary pigment that’s created which darkens the algae’s cells, he added.

This pigment blocks the ultraviolet rays which protect the cells of algae from solar radiation.

Here's how The species of algae which is making Utah's snow colourful is called Chlamydomonas nivalis.
The spectre of extreme weather, agricultural disruption and economic crisis is being raised across the globe by the return of the climatic phenomenon “El Nino”. However, experts have warned that El Nino's fierce heat may be carrying a resurgence of tropical diseases.

In a press conference, the World Health Organisation (WHO) sounded the alarm as Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the weather phenomenon is likely to increase the spread of dengue and other arboviruses like chikungunya and Zika.

Ghebreyesus said that the WHO has been making preparations to tackle the increase in the spread of viral diseases like Zika, chikungunya and dengue, as there is a "very high probability" of transmission of such diseases.

“WHO is preparing for the very high probability that 2023 and 2024 will be marked by an El Nino event, which could increase transmission of dengue and other so-called arboviruses such as Zika and chikungunya. The effects of climate change are also fuelling mosquito breeding and the spread of these diseases,” he stated.

Speaking about how the organisation is going to tackle the threat, Ghebreyesus said, “To respond to this threat, WHO last year established a global arbovirus initiative, which aims to strengthen the world’s ability to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks of these diseases. Many of the same capacities that countries established for COVID-19 can also be leveraged for dengue and other diseases. And many of the actions that can prevent dengue are the same actions that can help prevent so many other diseases - including climate action.”

Meanwhile, in the last three years, the highest number of dengue cases have been reported in Thailand with 19,503 cases reported by local health authorities in 2023.
ALSO READ | Financial Institutions on high alert as El Nino poses risk to farm loans, says report “WHO is preparing for the very high probability that 2023 and 2024 will be marked by an El Nino event, which could increase transmission of dengue and other so-called arboviruses such as Zika and chikungunya. And many of the actions that can prevent dengue are the same actions that can help prevent so many other diseases - including climate action.” How El Nino is increasing risk of viruses Mosquitoes, which transmit such viruses tend to multiply in the warmer weather which the El Nino effect is set to bring in various parts of the world. WATCH | China, and El Nino: An emerging food, water and power crisis? There has already been an increase in tropical diseases in regions from South America to Asia. A state of emergency has been declared in Peru due to its worst recorded dengue outbreak, as almost 150,000 suspected cases have been reported so far. The WHO stated that the increasing infections are placing a "heavy burden" on the health system of the country. Meanwhile, in the last three years, the highest number of dengue cases have been reported in Thailand with 19,503 cases reported by local health authorities in 2023. According to WHO, cases have also been on the rise in Cambodia and Malaysia while authorities in Singapore warned earlier about the potential for an increase in cases between June and October. 'This is treason': Putin appeals for 'unity', calls Wagner mutiny 'deadly threat' to Russia

As per official data, the government authorities have seized millions of illegal and harmful vapes in the last three years, as experts warn that this is the “tip of the iceberg” and a “tsunami” of such products is actually flooding the UK markets.

As per reports accessed by 125 local authorities, officials have confiscated more than 2.5 million illicit e-cigarettes since the start of 2020. According to the figures, trading standards at Hillingdon Borough Council had seized 1,352,063 illicit e-cigarettes in west London.

The e-cigarettes are not in compliance with the legal regulations of the UK and have high levels of nicotine concentration, contain banned ingredients or carry the chance of having oversized tanks for nicotine liquid. In the previous analysis, it was found that illicit vapes contain high levels of lead, nickel and chromium.
