The authorities carrying out the UK Covid inquiry have not been able to access the WhatsApp messages that former prime minister Boris Johnson exchanged as he has apparently forgotten the password of his old mobile phone.

As per media reports, Johnson is not being able to recall the passcode which was set to unlock the device, which is believed to contain crucial Covid-era communications which he had with ministers. The former prime minister stopped using his old mobile phone in May 2021.

Johnson is unable to recall the passcode “with 100 per cent confidence”, according to a report published by The Times. The spokesman of the ex-Tory leader did not refute the report of him not being able to recall the code.

The experts are concerned that any attempts made to unlock the iPhone may lead to the device getting disabled and deletion of its data, which included important WhatsApp messages from the pandemic, the reports stated.

NASA's Perseverance rover's new findings have suggested that organic molecules, which are considered as a potential indicator of life, are present in great volume and diversity in the rocks at a locale on Mars, where there was the existence of a lake long ago.

The latest evidence was collected using an instrument called SHERLOC which is mounted on the robotic arm of the six-wheeled rover that enables to carry out the analysis of organic molecules and detailed mapping. Researchers have been reporting about the findings of SHERLOC from 10 places on two geological formations on the Jezero crater's floor.

The researchers collected evidence which indicated organic molecules' presence in multiple rock samples, including a few collected which are likely to return to Earth for future analysis. The researchers stated that the discovery of evidence of such organic molecules does not prove about the existence of life in the past or present on Mars, and added that non-biological processes appear as a more likely explanation.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Chandrayaan-3 mission from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 2:35 pm local time in its second attempt at soft landing on the surface of the moon. The journey to the moon will take around 40 days and the spacecraft is expected to land on the lunar surface by August 23.

If ISRO can successfully pull off this mission, India will join the exclusive list that has only three countries, the United States, the Soviet Union and China, which were able to make a soft landing on the Moon. In 2013, China emerged as the only country which succeeded in its first attempt with the Chang’e-3 mission.

Southeast Asian foreign ministers on Thursday reiterated condemnation of the ongoing violence in Myanmar, as an intensifying conflict there tests the unity of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Myanmar, one of the bloc's 10 members, has been beset by fighting since the military seized power in early 2021 before unleashing a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy opponents, prompting retaliatory attacks by a resistance movement and ethnic minority armies. "We strongly condemned the continued acts of violence, including air strikes, artillery shelling, and destruction of public facilities," ASEAN's top diplomats said in a joint communique released late on Thursday after an unexplained delay. ALSO READ | Crisis in Myanmar dominates talks at ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting Meeting chair Indonesia had on Wednesday urged the group's foreign ministers to remain united in tackling the escalating violence in Myanmar. Myanmar's military leaders have refused to implement a five-point peace plan, which calls for a halt to violence and inclusive dialogue and was agreed shortly after they mounted their coup, and Malaysia had called for stronger condemnation. The ministers also "urged all parties involved to take concrete action to immediately halt indiscriminate violence, denounce any escalation, and create a conducive environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and inclusive national dialogue." The ministers said they discussed the South China Sea, where several members have overlapping maritime claims with China, the region's increasingly powerful neighbour. China's top diplomat Wang Yi attended ASEAN-related meetings in Jakarta this week and also held bilateral talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The water level of river Yamuna in India's national capital New Delhi has been stable for the last three hours after it rose continuously for the past four days. At 1 pm and 2 pm local time on Thursday, the water level stood at 208.62 metres.

Earlier, India's Central Water Commission estimated that the level of River Yamuna can reach up to 208.75 metres between 3-5 pm on Thursday in the national capital New Delhi. At 7 am on Thursday, the river swelled up to 208.46 metres as an 'extreme flood alert' was issued in the capital city and flood water entered Delhi's ITO area.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to the Central government to intervene and ensure that the release of water from the Hathnikund barrage of Haryana is slowed which is leading to the Yamuna flooding.

Meanwhile, thousands of people who were staying in low-lying areas of the capital were shifted to safe places as a precautionary measure.

Yamuna water level crosses danger mark

After the capital city received heavy rain for several consecutive days, Yamuna's water level breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Since then, the water level has risen rapidly. However, as the intensity of the rain gradually weakened, Kejriwal on Monday stated that the city was facing no immediate flood threat.

The primary reason for the Yamuna flooding is believed to be the extreme rainfall that the capital received in a very short span of time. The Central Water Commission's official said that water which was released from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana reached Delhi in less time, in comparison to other occasions. This could have happened because of siltation and encroachment. Experts stated that the water passes through a constricted space which may have led to an increase in the speed of the water. The experts stated that if the city had received the same amount of rainfall over an expanse of a few days, it would not have led to such extreme situations.

Various areas affected by flooding

All the low-lying areas near Yamuna were affected as the flood water of the river entered the ring road on Wednesday. The river water had flooded Boat Club, Monastery Market, Neeli Chhatri Temple, Yamuna Bazar, Neem Karoli Gaushala, Vishwakarma colony, and the stretch between Majnu ka Tila and Wazirabad till Wednesday evening.

Parts of Mayur Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, Badarpur, Jamia Nagar, and Shaheen Bagh also stand at the risk of facing a flood-like situation if the water level continues to rise. Kashmiri Gate and ITO were also flooded because of the rise in the water level of Yamuna.

China unveils plans to land astronauts on the moon by 2030

According to new research, the colour of the Earth's oceans is changing because of climate breakdown. The report suggests that the deep blue sea is actually turning greener over time and added that climate change is also affecting areas in the low latitudes near the equator.

“The reason we care about this is not because we care about the colour, but because the colour is a reflection of the changes in the state of the ecosystem,” stated BB Cael, a scientist at the National Oceanography Centre at the University of Southampton and author of the study which was published in Nature.

Earlier research has focused on the changes in the ocean's greenness, using the verdant chlorophyll present in its plankton, to know more about the impacts of climate change. However, the team led by Cael has studied the observations recorded by NASA's Modis-Aqua satellite which is an exhaustive data repository and searched for patterns of change in the colours of the ocean using a fuller colour spectrum, which included red and blue.

“We do have changes in the colour that are significantly emerging in almost all of the ocean of the tropics or subtropics,” stated Cael. The changes have been noted in more than 56 per cent of the oceans across the world, which is an area more than all of the land spread on the globe.

In many areas there’s a clear “greening effect”, stated Cael, however, he added that there are also water bodies where the blue or red colourings are falling or rising.

“These are not ultra, massive ecosystem-destroying changes, they may be subtle,” stated Cael. “But this gives us an additional piece of evidence that human activity is likely affecting large parts of the global biosphere in a way that we haven’t been able to understand," he added.

A researcher of ocean productivity at Oregon State University, Michael J Behrenfeld, said that the study extensively documents another consequence of changing climate. However, it remains unclear how strong these changes are and what exactly is taking place inside the ocean which is causing them.
