A 40 metres (130 feet) long "super sewer" is being constructed in London, which is likely to end the pollution blight of the River Thames. For seven years, the construction workers have been creating the biggest-ever upgrade to the 19th-century sewers of the city, AFP reported.

The existing sewage network of London dates back to the second half of the 1800s when it was built in response to the infamous "Great Stink" and was designed by civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette.

In the year 1858, a combination of a sewerage system which emptied straight into the River Thames and increasing temperatures resulted in London getting engulfed in a cloud of putrid air. The unbearable stench forced the construction of the sewerage system that is currently being used.

However, in recent decades, the growing population of London has led to the overflowing of the sewerage system and led to a flow of raw sewage once again into the river.

Bazalgette's network, which is considered an engineering wonder of the 19th century, used the same pipes for transporting rainwater and sewage, which results in effluent often spilling because of lack of capacity.

Mushrooming population accelerating sewage issues

Taylor Geall, who works at construction firm Tideway which is carrying out the project, speaking to AFP said, "Any time it rains, even a light drizzle, the sewers fill up and pour directly into the river. At the moment, in an average year 40 million tonnes of sewage spills into the Thames completely untreated.”

Even though the old brick-lined sewers, which were constructed between 1859 and 1875, are still in "pristine condition" they are just not big enough in size. "The issue is capacity," Geall added.

The officials had constructed the network when the population of London was just four million compared to today's nine million. Since the size of the population is bound to swell, the need for an upgrade worth £4.3-billion ($5.6-billion) has become critical.

London to soon get its new 'super sewer' which will end Thames pollution blight

Fifty-one of 71 people on a Bangladeshi airliner died when it crashed at the Nepalese capital's airport.

Eggs are considered a strong superfood, however, when combined with bell pepper, which is another fat-burning ingredient, they can make you lose weight very quickly. Peppers burn the stored fat and help in converting carbs into fuel.

Carrots have around 10 per cent of carbs and are made up of simple sugars, fibre and starch. Tahini, which is also called sesame butter, is rich in calcium and helps in reducing appetite and calorie intake, which eventually helps in losing weight.

Figs can be seen as a healthy replacement for unhealthy snacks because they do not contain fats at all and have few calories. They are rich in antioxidants and help in decreasing cell-damaging free radicals in your body. A combination of figs and Brazil nuts helps in weight loss by making one feel fuller.

Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, 89, too is out of the poll race. He has expressed dissent over the way former Congress leaders are switching to the BJP.

People consuming pulses in their calorie-restricted diet tend to lose more weight compared to those who have the same amount of calories but do not consume as many legumes. Anti-inflammatory tomatoes help in maintaining leptin resistance and losing weight.

Pineapple is high in water content and low in calories which makes it a healthy and ideal weight-loss snack. Pineapples contain a lot of fibre which helps in normal food passage and stimulates the release of digestive juices that help in food dissolution. Lime has many essential nutrients that help in the reduction of food consumption and body weight.

A magical drink, green tea helps in the burning of belly fat and weight loss. It is filled with antioxidants and also contains many catechins that help the liver convert fat into energy by pushing fat cells to release fat. Adding lemon to green tea can help one feel fuller and lose more weight.

More than 100 people were locked inside the former house of famed British mystery writer Agatha Christie for several hours in the English countryside on Friday.

In a series of mysterious occurrences, which seemed to have been lifted straight from the pages of one of the mystery novels of Christie, the group of tourists was trapped inside the house after a tree was knocked down by stormy weather which led to blockage of the road leading down to the property located in the county of Devon, southwest England.

In a rare astronomical accident, a meteorite hit a woman while she was busy enjoying her coffee with a friend in France.

The incredibly rare occurrence was reported from the village of Alsace located in eastern France. According to a report published by the French newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (DNA), the woman was sitting outside on a terrace and chatting with her friend when a mysterious pebble struck her in the ribs on July 6.

“I heard a big 'Poom' coming from the roof next to us. In the second that followed, I felt a shock on the ribs. I thought it was an animal, a bat!” said the woman, while speaking to the news outlet. “We thought it was a piece of cement, the one we apply to the ridge tiles. Wagner group's fighters have reached Belarus from Russia, confirmed Ukrainian and Polish officials on Saturday, one day after Minsk stated that the mercenaries were training the soldiers of the country in the southeast of the capital. "Wagner is in Belarus," said Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian border agency, shared in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. He stated that the officials have observed in Belarus the movement of "separate groups" from Russia. Since Tuesday, some Wagner fighters were already present in Belarus, two sources close to the fighters confirmed to news agency Reuters. A video was released by the Belarusian defence ministry on Friday which showed what it stated were Wagner fighters providing training to Belarusian soldiers at a military range which was located close to the town of Osipovichi. Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was not seen in public since he departed from the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on June 24. Poland's Deputy Minister Co-ordinator of Special Services Stanislaw Zaryn stated that the presence of Wagner fighters in Belarus has also been confirmed by Wagner fighters. "There may be several hundred of them at the moment," stated Zaryn on Twitter. This month, Poland stated that it was bolstering its border with Belarus to prevent any potential threats. At least 60 vehicles enter Belarus Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who did not make his own troops available to Russia, permitted Moscow to use its territory to launch its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since this, Belarus has allowed its country to be used as a base for Russian nuclear weapons. Millions battle record heatwaves as temperatures dangerously soar in US, Europe

The UK Health Security Agency warned that London is standing at risk of a major measles outbreak which could result in tens of thousands getting hospitalised.

The UKHSA's fresh analysis suggests that since there has been an improvement in MMR vaccination rates, an outbreak of between 40,000 and 160,0000 cases can be experienced by the capital. Experts warned that an outbreak of this scale can cause dozens of deaths and thousands getting hospitalised.

UKHSA consultant epidemiologist Dr Vanessa Saliba said, “Measles can be a serious infection that can lead to complications, especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems. Due to longstanding suboptimal vaccine uptake there is now a very real risk of seeing big outbreaks in London.”

The official data published on Friday revealed that there is a steady rise in measles cases this year which indicates a resurgence of the illness. This year, between June 30 and January 1, there were 128 cases of measles reported, in comparison to 54 cases that came up in the whole of 2022, with 66 per cent of them being detected in London, although cases have been reported from all regions.

People likely to suffer complications due to measles

Measles can cause severe illness, with an estimated 20-40 per cent of children getting hospitalised, as per the UKHSA. According to the estimates of the US Centre for Disease Control, one to two in 1,000 children infected will lose their life from measles and a larger number of people will suffer serious complications, which will include deafness and intellectual disabilities.

“UKHSA is right to be worried about this,” stated Prof Paul Hunter, professor in medicine at the University of East Anglia, adding that an outbreak of the estimated scale would lead to “dozens of deaths”.

US battles dramatic heatwave

The United States is braving a dangerous weekslong heat wave as a heat dome intensifies, reaching peak strength in various parts of the western provinces. Because of the formidability, the National Weather Service in Phoenix has called the heat dome “one of the strongest high-pressure systems this region has ever seen.”

As the heatwave intensifies at the weekend, around 100 heat records can be broken in a day, adding to more than 1,000 high-temperature records which have already been crossed in the US since June. More than 90 million people have been under heat alerts after the expansion of heat dome in places like California, which is now facing its first extreme heat wave of the year.

Even Antarctica has not been able to escape the effects of El Nino where it's hot even in winters. According to the seasons, sea ice expands and shrinks and currently the ice in Antarctica is growing, but at a very slow pace as seen since satellite observation started in the 1970s.

Southern Europe, parts of US face intense heatwaves as temperatures soar even in Antarctica

South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol made a sudden and unannounced visit to Ukraine on Sunday where he went to the town of Bucha, before a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his office stated.

"The president first toured the Bucha city massacre site near the capital Kyiv and the city of Irpin, where missile attacks were concentrated on civilian residential areas," his office stated.

"President Yoon will visit a memorial for the war dead to lay a wreath, and hold a summit meeting with President Zelensky," it said in a statement.

However, South Korea has a long-standing policy of not giving weapons to zones which are involved in conflict, because of which the repeated requests from the United States, European allies and also Ukraine for arms have remained stuck.
The meeting of Yoon with Zelensky, who has previously appealed to Seoul to consider providing weapons directly to Kyiv, is likely to focus on the supply of aid by South Korea to the country.

Seoul, which has been technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea, has been producing large volumes of NATO-compatible weaponry, which includes highly sought-after shell ammunition, tanks and howitzers.

Seoul has stated that it can reconsider its policy of not providing lethal aid, as Yoon had earlier this year stated that Russia's large-scale attack on civilians could tip the balance.
