The Kepler space telescope has been able to identify the majority of the exoplanets, which is more than 5,500 in total.

However, NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has been adding more alien worlds to the ever-increasing planetary catalogue of the cosmos.

With the help of statistical methods to look through large quantities of data of TESS, a group of scientists, headed by University of New South Wales' Ph.D. student Priyashkumar Mistry, discovered eight new exoplanets.

As per NASA, each one of these newly-discovered planets is a "super-Earth", which is a type of exoplanet that is bigger than Earth but smaller compared to Neptune.

Nearly 400 exoplanets have been confirmed by TESS to date, and 6,977 planets await confirmation. The nearby stars are observed by the satellite, and the dips and fluctuations in their brightness are noted.

If such dips are spotted, they indicate that something crossed between Earth and the star, which can be a new exoplanet.

"If this orbital motion ever comes between us and the star we will observe a dip in the brightness of that observed star. This is what we call a transit," said Mistry, while speaking to Space.com.

The Validation of Transiting Exoplanets using Statistical Tools (VaTEST) project was used by Mistry and his team for identifying anomalies, which helped in detecting the presence of exoplanets in the data of TESS.

Importance of statistical tools

Only the transiting exoplanets do not cause such dips, it can also be a result of a star orbiting another star (binary system) which may have generated a transit-like signal.

Mistry stated that the transit method only helps in getting the radius of an orbiting body. Generally, a method called radial velocity (RV) is used to understand the mass of a transiting object.

It can take a lot of time to detect the RV signal as astronomers keep on observing just one star, especially if the exoplanet has a long orbital period.

However, Mistry and his team were provided by VaTEST with another means to confirm if these transiting events were a result of orbiting exoplanets.

"The tool takes in the transit data and some inputs such as transit depth, period, TESS identifier, etc. Then based on that it starts fitting different models on the data and performs some probability calculations. And then finally it calculates False Positive Probability (FPP), if it turns out to be < 1% then we can validate that transit signal as a planetary transit," Mistry stated.

10 Ways In Which Delhi-NCR Can Get Rid Of Killer Smog

1. No Use Of Coal In Restaurants, Hotels

As per the report, nearly 9,000 hotels and restaurants in Delhi are using coal which is a major source of PM emissions and can cause lung disease, if inhaled by people.

The households are required to avoid the use of crop residue, coal, cow dung and wood for cooking and each of them needs access to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) which can reduce levels of PM 2.5, PM 10, and nitrogen oxides.

3. No Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Burning

The burning of municipal solid waste (MSW) like furniture, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, appliances, and batteries needs to be stopped.

4. Construction Materials Should Be Covered

The raw materials at the construction site need to be covered and water spray should be used to prevent suspension of sand and dust in the air. The construction materials should also be covered during on-road movement which can improve air quality by 50 per cent.

5. Use Of Windbreaker and Telescopic Chute

Water spray, windbreaker, and telescopic chute should be used during concrete batching, which refers to the process of mixing materials for forming concrete.

The report stated that more electric, hybrid and BS-VI vehicles will help in decreasing pollution. It added that Diesel Particulate Filter’s (DPF) use can also reduce emissions from diesel vehicles significantly.

7. De-SOx-ing And De-NOx-ing Systems At Power Plants

De-SOx-ing and De-NOx-ing systems need to be installed in large power plants and refineries in New Delhi which emit pollutants like sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

8. Vapour Recovery Systems at Petrol Pumps

Vapour recovery systems need to be installed at the petrol pumps which help in collecting the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that get dissipated during unloading and refuelling of petrol.

The report clearly emphasised the need to put a stop to the burning of crop residue in Haryana and Punjab. It suggested that the residue be used for feeding cattle, energy production and biogas generation.

Fly ash has become a major contributor to pollution in New Delhi. The report emphasised the need for the installation of windbreakers, plantations and water spraying to deal with the pollutants.

There are several ways in which home air can be purified without using any air purifiers. Here are a few tips:

Indoor plants work as natural air purifiers and are able to absorb pollutants and carbon dioxide while releasing oxygen.

Beeswax candles release negative ions which neutralise pollutants like odours, mould and dust and clean the air.

Nuts and seeds are a good source of fibre reduce the risk of blood clotting and improve the health of the human brain.

The diffusion of essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree helps in purifying the air and also leaves a pleasant fragrance.

Natural cleaning products like baking soda, lemon and vinegar effectively work as natural cleaning agents. By opting for such products, one also reduces the number of harmful chemicals which get released in the air.

The new government of Slovakia on Wednesday (Nov 8) cancelled the last military aid package worth €40.3 million ($43.07 million) to Ukraine which was finalised by the previous administration.

"The government doesn't approve the proposal for the donation of military equipment to Ukraine," stated the government, in a resolution which was adopted on Wednesday.

It had pledged earlier to stop arms deliveries to the war-torn country. Earlier, the government had decided to provide Ukraine with rockets and ammunition, however, incoming Prime Minister Robert Fico took a pledge to stop any military aid to Kyiv as it battles the Russian invasion.

The election was won by Fico's leftist SMER-SSD party on September 30 after which it formed a ruling coalition with the nationalist SNS and centre-left HLAS parties.

The government led by Fico rejected the package during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, as per the government's website. Slovakia stops shipments from army stores to Ukraine Fico had led a campaign in which he had criticised the Western nations for providing military support to Ukraine and pressing sanctions against Russia. He had also supported peace talks, which was also propagated by Hungary's leader Viktor Orban. However, it was rejected by Ukraine. The election was won by Fico's leftist SMER-SSD party on September 30 after which it formed a ruling coalition with the nationalist SNS and centre-left HLAS parties. WATCH | Russia-Ukraine war: 6 killed in Donetsk; Zelensky says, 'Deployed more air defence systems' | WION Fico repeatedly stated that the country will stop shipments from army stores to Ukraine, however, he recently clarified that the private business deals will remain unaffected. The country had staunchly supported Ukraine and military equipment which included the S-300 air defence system and MiG-29 jets were supplied by a previous centre-right government. Slovakia, which shares its eastern border with Ukraine, had provided military aid in 13 packages which were worth €671 million to Ukraine since Russia launched an attack on Ukraine in February 2022 before the appointment of Fico. The diplomats stated that army stocks have been depleted largely so a cancellation of official military aid is likely to have limited impact. (With inputs from agencies)
