Israel’s Western allies fear it could be walking into a trap in Gaza as Hamas and its backers seek a wider conflict. On record, Hezbollah says that it is backing Hamas, but is not linked to the October 7th terror attack on Israel. Inside Gaza, the Israeli military said it had come under attack several times from Hamas "tunnel shafts and military compounds" as it pushes on with its offensive. Israel-Hamas war: How is Hamas trapping Israel?

Amid the escalating war between Israel and Hamas which has pushed the Gaza Strip into a deepening humanitarian crisis, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a telephonic conversation with his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen on Saturday (Oct 4).

In the conversation, Jaishankar reaffirmed the commitment of India to "countering terrorism, observance of international humanitarian law and for a two-state solution".

"Spoke this afternoon with FM Eli Choen of Israel. Appreciated his sharing the Israeli assessment of the current situation. Reiterated our firm commitment to countering terrorism, observance of international humanitarian law and for a two-state solution," wrote Jaishankar, on his official handle on X.

The discussion between the two leaders emphasised the current situation in Gaza and the importance of finding a solution which can ensure peace and regional stability.

The minister reiterated the firm stance of India against terrorism and emphasised the unwavering commitment of the nation to counter the menace. He further emphasised the importance of observing international humanitarian law and ensuring that the lives of civilians are protected in the conflict zones.

In the talks, the foreign minister further articulated steadfast support of India for a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict between Israel and Palestine.

<h2>Jaishankar calls for dialogue to resolve issues</h2>

On Friday (Oct 3), Jaishankar, at the Joint Secretary Session of the Senate's External Affairs and Defence Commission in Rome, emphasised that the issues being faced by Palestinians need to be addressed and called for resolving the issue through negotiation and dialogue and not through conflict.

He stated that although terrorism is "unacceptable", there is a need to find a solution to the Palestine issue.

Jaishankar said, "What happened on October 7 was a big act of terrorism, the subsequent acts happening after that. This has taken the entire region into a different direction. But surely, it must be everybody's hope that eventually...the conflict can't be the normal of the region and that it comes back to some stability, some co-operation."

"Within this we have to find a balance between different issues. Because there is no question. If there is issue of terrorism, and we all find terrorism unacceptable, we have to stand up. But there is also an issue of Palestine. There has to be solution for the problems faced by the Palestinian people," he further said.

The artificial intelligence startup of Elon Musk, called xAI, is set to release its first AI model to a few select groups on Saturday (Oct 4), announced the billionaire and Tesla CEO on Friday (Oct 3).

The step has been taken almost a year after OpenAI's ChatGPT was launched which changed the ways in which businesses worked across the world and pushed people toward adopting the generative AI technology.

OpenAI, the company which introduced ChatGPT to the world, was launched by Elon Musk in 2015 but he stepped down from the board of the company in 2018.

"In some important respects, it (xAI's new model) is the best that currently exists," Musk wrote on his X social media platform. "As soon as it’s out of early beta, xAI's Grok system will be available to all X Premium+ subscribers," he added.

The billionaire has remained critical of AI efforts made by the big tech firms and had earlier this year announced that he will launch a maximum truth-seeking AI which will make an effort to understand how the universe works and rival Microsoft's Bing AI and Google's Bard.

The team which has worked on xAI, which was launched in July, consists of those who have worked in Google's DeepMind, and other major AI research firms.

Even though X and xAI are separate, the companies have been working closely together. xAI has also collaborated with Tesla and other companies.

Elon Musk makes groundbreaking move in field of AI, set to launch first chatbot

In a stunning claim, the scientists have stated that an infrared northern lights-style aurora, which was spotted on Uranus, is likely to be holding the key to finding alien life.

The scientific researchers spotted the aurora on the distant planet while they were observing the temperatures of the gas giants in the Solar System and hoping that their findings could explain the magnetic fields of other planets, which are closer to Earth.

This is likely to help researchers discover if alien life is being supported by distant planets.

Speaking about the discovery, University of Leicester's Physicist Emma Thomas, who was the lead author of the new study, stated, "The temperature of all the gas giant planets, including Uranus, are hundreds of degrees Kelvin/Celsius above what models predict if only warmed by the Sun, leaving us with the big question of how these planets are so much hotter than expected?"

"By analysing Uranus’s aurora which directly connects to both the planet's magnetic field and atmosphere, we can make predictions about the atmospheres and magnetic fields of these worlds and hence their suitability for life,” she added while speaking to the Daily Star.

"Our results will go on to broaden our knowledge of ice giant auroras and strengthen our understanding of planetary magnetic fields in our solar system, at exoplanets and even our own planet,” the researcher said.

<h2>Extraterrestrials hiding in deep oceans of Uranus' moons?</h2>

Scientists, earlier this year, announced that they have found chances of active oceans deep beneath the surfaces of two of the 27 moons orbiting Uranus, where there is a possibility of the presence of extraterrestrials (ETs).

Scientists have been very hopeful lately of finding signs of life in any corner of the universe in the next few years. As per Professor Michelle Dougherty, it should be "surprising" if no presence of life is detected on one of the freezing moons of Jupiter.

A deadly airstrike by Israel on Gaza City hit a school, which was being run by the United Nations and was serving as a shelter, on Saturday (Nov 4).

The attack took place at a time when US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to hear demands of the Arabs for a ceasefire in a meeting to be held in Jordan.

As reported by Reuters, Al-Fakhoura school which is located in Jabalia refugee camp was hit in an Israeli strike and led to many evacuees, who had earlier taken shelter, getting killed or wounded.

At least 15 people were killed and dozens of other were injured, said Mohammad Abu Selmeyah, the head of al-Shifa Hospital, after the incident, reported Reuters.

Gaza City was encircled by the ground forces of Israel on Thursday (Oct 2) after their bombing campaign was stepped up, which was aimed at wiping out Hamas, after a war broke out between Tel Aviv and the militant group in the wake of the October 7 assault.

Last month, Israel asked all civilians to leave Gaza Strip's northern part, which also included Gaza City, and move towards the south of the enclave, which is also being bombed by Israel.

Hamas has been accused by Israel of hiding militants among civilians across the enclave and concealing tunnel entrances and command centres in al-Shifa.

The living conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate further in the wake of war. Food remains scarce and the people have started drinking salty water, as medical services collapse.

The famous Medici Chapel of Florence will finally be allowing four visitors at a time to enter the long-hidden secret room in the Chapel which is said to have charcoal drawings on its walls, some of which have been attributed to Michelangelo.

The secret room, which is 10-by-3 metres (33-by-10 feet) in size, was first found in 1975 when officials started searching for the Medici Chapel's new exit to accommodate increasing visitors.

The then-director of the museum Paolo Dal Poggetto “firmly believed that they were by Michelangelo,’’ stated Paola D’Agostino, the current director. The paintings of Michelangelo have been under fierce debate which continues to this day.

“The major scholars of Michelangelo’s drawings dismissed the attributions” at the time it was discovered 50 years ago, she stated. “Others had a more moderate view, in the sense they thought that some could be by Michelangelo and others could be by followers. So the debate is ongoing,” she added.

Till 1955, the room was used for storing coal after which it was sealed and forgotten for years underneath a trapdoor, which remained hidden by furniture. The drawings on the walls were also discovered under two layers of plaster.

As per the theory proposed by Dal Poggetto, Michelangelo had hidden in the tiny space from “the wrath of Pope Clement VII” after he had supported a short-lived republic which overthrew the Medicis. In the room, the artists had sketched studies for a few of his projects.

The artwork on the wall includes sketches which are said to be the legs of Giuliano de’ Medici, which is near the entrance of the secret room. For the last 50 years, the room's access has remained restricted.

It was decided by the officials that the room would be opened to the public on a limited basis, and the works would be placed in extended periods of darkness after long exposure to LED lights for protection.

The archaeologists have stated that a giant pyramid which is hidden in an underground hillside in Indonesia is much older than Egypt's Giza Pyramids or England's Stonehenge and is likely to compete with the oldest megalithic structures ever created by humans.

This megalithic site in Indonesia is called Gunung Padang. Indonesia's hillside, which is filled with ancient stone structures and is on the island of West Java, is considered sacred by locals, who call it a 'punden berundak' which means a stepped pyramid for the terraces that slowly move towards its peak.

The site's surface has barely been brushed by the archaeologists, and already it is shaping up to become a "remarkable testament" to human ingenuity.

As per experts, Gunung Padang is the world's oldest pyramidal structure and was built atop an extinct volcano before civilisations existed and humans delved into agriculture.

As per new data found by scientists in Indonesia, its interior hides large open chambers which contain many unknown elements.

An extensive analysis of Gunung Padang, which is known as the 'mountain of enlightenment' in the local language, has suggested that the natural hill of lava was "meticulously sculpted" by an ancient civilization into the core of a pyramid-like structure after a long time.

The site's first radiocarbon dating indicated that initial construction started in the last glacial period, which was more than 27,000 years ago. The results of Gunung Padang's current study have come after carrying out many years of careful analysis.

<h2>Archaeologists decode the complex structure of Gunung Padang</h2>

In the years between 2011 and 2015, a variety of techniques like ground penetrating radars, core drilling and subsurface imaging were used by a team of archaeologists, geophysicists and geologists, headed by geologist Danny Hilman Natawidjaja at Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency to investigate the cultural heritage site.

It was found by Natawidjaja and other researchers that Gunung Padang was created in complex and sophisticated stages and its deepest part lies 30 meters down.

The structure's core part was probably created between 25,000 and 14,000 BCE, however, it was later abandoned for several millennia.

"The builders of Unit 3 and Unit 2 at Gunung Padang must have possessed remarkable masonry capabilities, which do not align with the traditional hunter-gatherer cultures," said the team of researchers.

"Given the long and continuous occupation of Gunung Padang, it is reasonable to speculate that this site held significant importance, attracting ancient people to repeatedly occupy and modify it,” they added.

Archaeologists hint Indonesia's giant hidden pyramid likely to be the oldest in the world

Paleontologists have made a startling discovery in South Africa which suggests that it was not humans who created the world's oldest known burial site.

The researchers have found remains of small-brained distant relatives of humans in the burial site, which has hinted at them being the creators. These mammals were known to be incapable of complex behaviour.

The researchers, headed by renowned paleoanthropologist Lee Berger, in June announced that several specimens of Homo naledi have been discovered by them. These remains of Stone Age hominids, who were good at tree-climbing, were found buried around 30 meters (100 feet) underground in a cave system inside the Cradle of Humankind, which is a designated UNESCO world heritage site close to Johannesburg.

"These are the most ancient interments yet recorded in the hominin record, earlier than evidence of Homo sapiens interments by at least 100,000 years," said the scientists, in the numerous preprint papers which were published in eLife.

<h2>Did bigger brains help humans perform complex tasks?</h2>

The discoveries have challenged the current theories associated with human evolution which normally stated that bigger brains' development helped in performing complex, "meaning-making" tasks like burying the dead.

The oldest burials earlier found by archaeologists in the Middle East and Africa had the remains of Homo sapiens, which were estimated to be around 100,000 years old.

Those remains discovered in South Africa by Berger date back to at least 200,000 BC. The remains critically also belong to Homo naledi, which was a primitive species and had brains which were as big as oranges.

Speaking about the latest discovery in the paper, the researchers said, "These discoveries show that mortuary practices were not limited to H. sapiens or other hominins with large brain sizes.”

They added that the burial site is not the only sign which proves that Homo naledi was capable of complex cognitive and emotional behaviour.

The engravings which formed geometrical shapes, including a "rough hashtag figure", were also discovered on the surfaces of a cave pillar nearby which appeared purposely smoothed.

"That would mean not only are humans not unique in the development of symbolic practices, but may not have even invented such behaviours," Berger said, in an interview with AFP.

In 2015, Berger had faced opposition after his discoveries claimed that Homo naledi was capable of doing more than the size of its head.

"That was too much for scientists to take at that time. We think it's all tied up with this big brain. We're about to tell the world that's not true,” he added.

World's oldest known burial site was not created by humans but...

As per the Chinese government officials, their industry's future likely rests on the shoulders of humanoid robots if the new goals of increasing mass production by 2025 and achieving an advanced level of technology by 2027 are to be met.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which oversees the industrial sector of China, uploaded a nine-page guideline on its website, which stated that humanoid robots should “realise mass production by 2025” in China.

MIIT stated that the country would aim to “establish a humanoid robot innovation system, make breakthroughs in several key technologies and ensure the safe and effective supply of core components” by 2025.

The ministry appealed that the humanoid robots should “become an important new engine of economic growth” in China by 2027.

The document stated that by that time, “the technological innovation of humanoid robots will be significantly improved, a safe and reliable industrial supply chain system will be formed, an industrial ecology with international competitiveness will be constructed and our comprehensive strength will reach the world’s advanced level”.

This is the latest step taken by China for promoting tech self-reliance and accelerating the development of its local robotics industry as it faces fierce competition from the US in major technology areas like chips.

<h2>'Humanoid robots likely to become disruptive innovation'</h2>

As per the World Robotics 2022 Report published by the International Federation of Robotics, significant progress has been made by China in industrial robotics as it overtook the United States in 2021 for the first time and became the world's fifth most automated country in the world.

As per the guidelines shared on Thursday (Nov 2), industries like home services, agriculture, healthcare and logistics are likely to see a boom in the use of robots.
