The east-bound commercial planes found themselves moving at supersonic speeds because of record-breaking wind which flew over the mid-Atlantic region this weekend.

According to the US National Weather Service, a Virgin Atlantic passenger plane - which was travelling from Washington to London - was pushed at a speed of nearly 1300kph (800mph), which is faster than the speed of sound, as per the US National Weather Service.

“This evening’s weather balloon launch detected the 2nd strongest upper-level wind recorded in local history going back to the mid-20th century,” stated the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, in the post on its official X account.

“Around 34,000-35,000ft, winds peaked around 230 knots (265mph!). For those flying eastbound in this jet, there will be quite a tailwind,” said the weather service.

Two other passenger planes, which included one from New Jersey’s Newark Airport to Lisbon, Portugal, flew at a speed of 835mph.

Even though the planes flew at speeds higher than that of sound, their sound barrier did not break as they were not travelling faster than sound relative to the air which had wrapped them in the jet stream.

The fast and narrow current of air which flows from west to east and encircles the globe is called the Atlantic jet stream and is generally used by aeroplanes which travel east from North America to cut down on their travel duration and use of fuel.

The current usually has winds which travel at speeds close to 110mph (177 kph), however, it is known to intensify sometimes, especially in winter months.

So far, there have been no reports of passengers facing difficulties when they were aboard these eastbound flights.

New Zealand's stunning landscapes make it a great destination for a road trip. Indians, who are at least 21 years old and have an Indian driving license, are allowed to drive here for up to a year.

Singapore generally has mandated an international driving license, however, individuals who have a valid Indian driving license in English are free to drive for up to one year.

People with Indian driving licenses printed in English can explore the charming towns of South Africa and drive through this beautiful country.

Indian driving license is also valid on the roads of the United Kingdom for a year. However, Indians are permitted to only drive the vehicle classes which are indicated on their driver's license.

Indian driving licenses are also valid in Switzerland for a duration of one year and this allows tourists to drive on the roads of one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

It is possible to drive in Sweden with an Indian driving license but the license should be printed in one of the following languages: Swedish, English, French, German, or Norwegian.

Spain is another country where an Indian driving license can be used for driving on the roads after completing the necessary residency registration.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the students will now be given the option of appearing twice for 10th and 12th class board examinations in one year. He added that this step will be introduced in the academic session 2025-26.

After the launch of the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme in the Indian city of Chhattisgarh, under which 211 schools of the state are set to be upgraded, Pradhan on Monday (Feb 19) said the new National Education Policy (NEP) is aimed at reducing the academic stress on students.

The new NEP was unveiled by the government in 2020. The programme was held at the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Auditorium in Raipur.

The minister emphasised the concept of introducing 10 bag-less days in school every year and called students to indulge in art, culture and sports, among other activities.

On the plan of the Centre under NEP 2020, Pradhan said that starting from the 2025-26 academic session, the students will be able to appear for the 10th and 12th class board exams twice.

As per the New Curriculum Framework (NCF) announced by the Ministry of Education in August last year, the officials will conduct the board examinations twice a year to ensure that students get a sufficient amount of time and opportunity to perform well.

The students will also have the option of retaining the best score, irrespective of how they perform in another exam.

Education 'not a priority' for Congress: Pradhan

The minister asked students, who were present at the programme if they were happy with this change introduced in board exams and asked them to retain the best marks obtained by them after they appeared in both the exams.

Stars other than the Sun present in our solar system can have a major impact on the planets including Earth, even possibly changing their orbits, scientists have said. The gravitational pull of the stars has the ability to change the orbit of the Earth, an event that can wreak havoc on the green planet's climate.

The orbital changes happened in the past, millions of years ago. When it happened, the temperature of Earth increased by 8 degrees Celsius, according to the study titled 'Passing Stars as an Important Driver of Paleoclimate and the solar system's Orbital Evolution'.

The study has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The study's lead researchers are Sean Raymond and Nathan A Kaib.

Perturbations are a minor deviation in the course of a celestial body, caused by the gravitational attraction of a neighbouring body from passing stars alter the long-term orbital evolution of the sun's planets, including Earth, explained Kaib, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, in the study.

"One reason this is important is because the geologic record shows that changes in the Earth's orbital eccentricity accompany fluctuations in the Earth's climate. If we want to best search for the causes of ancient climate anomalies, it is important to have an idea of what Earth's orbit looked like during those episodes," he said.

Scientists predict Earth's past orbital evolution

To understand the events which have occurred in the 4.5-billion-year lifespan of Earth, the researchers carried out extensive scientific research. They ran simulations to predict the planet's past orbital evolution.

The scientists then chose a single known event, which occurred 2.8 million years ago, when a Sun-like star known as HD 7977 passed through the Solar System.

The star passed from inside the Oort Cloud and was at a distance of some 31,000 astronomical units (1 astronomical unit is the distance between Earth and the Sun).

Hence, it was at a great distance to have any effect. However, it may have zoomed in as close as 4,000 astronomical units.

"It has already been proposed that Earth's orbital eccentricity was notably high during this event, but our results show that passing stars make detailed predictions of Earth's past orbital evolution at this time highly uncertain, and a broader spectrum of orbital behaviour is possible than previously thought," said Kaib.

In a rare case, a 34-year-old man in Colorado, United States died after getting bitten by one of his two pet Gila monsters, as reported by Jefferson County coroner.

Speaking about the rare Lakewood Gila monster case, reptile expert with the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation and medical toxicologist, Dr Nick Brandehoff said, "I think this case highlights that any venomous animals should be respected."

How venomous are Gila monsters? Are their bites usually fatal?

Gila monsters are a kind of venomous reptile which can be found in the southwestern United States. Although their bites can be painful for people, generally they are not fatal.

According to experts, the last report of a human being dying because of the Gila monster bite was in 1930.

"The vast majority of bites cause local swelling and bleeding," said Brandehoff, who claimed that the bites lead to intense localised pain and also lead the victims to pass out. However, deaths are very rare.

"The last case I have been able to find," said Brandehoff, "was 1930 and that was not even a medical journal case."

As per reports, the man owned two pet Gila monsters and one of them bit him on February 12. The pet Gila monster was juvenile and around 12 inches long.

In a rare case, a 34-year-old man in Colorado, United States died after getting bitten by one of his two pet Gila monsters, as reported by Jefferson County coroner. Speaking about the rare Lakewood Gila monster case, reptile expert with the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation and medical toxicologist, Dr Nick Brandehoff said, "I think this case highlights that any venomous animals should be respected." How venomous are Gila monsters? Are their bites usually fatal? Gila monsters are a kind of venomous reptile which can be found in the southwestern United States. Although their bites can be painful for people, generally they are not fatal. According to experts, the last report of a human being dying because of the Gila monster bite was in 1930. However, deaths are very rare. "The last case I have been able to find," said Brandehoff, "was 1930 and that was not even a medical journal case." As per reports, the man owned two pet Gila monsters and one of them bit him on February 12. The pet Gila monster was juvenile and around 12 inches long. Criminal investigator with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Eric Harper said that they were asked to remove Gila monsters from the home after the incident. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Sweden applied to join the US-led Western military alliance in May 2022, at the same time as Finland.

Although it supports Stockholm in principle, Budapest prolonged the process by asking Sweden to stop "vilifying" Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government, which critics accuse of authoritarianism.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday (Feb 19) said that the officers of the national capital are not willing to work due to the pressure from the BJP which has led to a "serious constitutional crisis".

The chief minister claimed that the proposed 'one-time settlement' scheme for redressing inflated water bills was stopped by the officers. He added that Aam Aadmi Party will start a massive protest in the national capital if the BJP does not allow the implementation of the scheme.

Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, CM Kejriwal appealed to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to give directions for the implementation of the scheme to the officers or take action against them if they are not willing to do it.

Hinting at another showdown with the BJP-led Centre, Kejriwal said the Delhi government will make sure that the Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) ‘one-time settlement scheme' is implemented at all costs.
