The scientists, while analysing data which was collected nearly 30 years ago on Venus, have concluded that the volcanoes are likely to be active currently on the planet. A research group, which was headed by David Sulcanese of the Universita d'Annunzio in Pescara, Italy, used data collected from radar mapping of the surface of the Earth's twin sister in the 1990s when the experts were searching for volcanic lava flows and found their presence in two regions. The latest discovery has hinted that volcanic activity taking place currently on Venus may be more widespread than believed. Also Read: Skygazers assemble! Six planets are set to align in spectacular view for 'planet parade' in June The work was published in the journal Nature Astronomy. Venus, which is also known as "Earth's twin sister", has a CO2-dominated atmosphere which leads to a massive greenhouse effect and bakes the planet's surface at around 465°C (870°F). According to scientists, the surface of Venus was very similar to that of Earth billions of years ago. The presence of liquid water, the brightening sun and volcanic activity increased the planet's temperatures and led to evaporation of all water from the planet, creating a runaway greenhouse effect. Currently, Venus is broiling hot and appears dead as dense clouds of sulfuric acid surround it. Venus likely to witness 42 volcanic eruptions a year: study Scientists, while studying a host of other possibilities, said their "best interpretation" of the observation is that the planet's surface scattering properties like its roughness and composition went through a change between the first cycle of scans and the third cycle, which spanned across nearly 16 months. "Our study covered only about 16% of Venus's surface due to the limitation of comparing images from just the two left-look cycles," stated lead author Sulcanese, who has been employed at his university's International Research School of Planetary Sciences. "Therefore, it is likely that more evidence of this nature exists on Venus," he added. Watch: Gravitas: Most promising indication of life on another planet found The observations have also supported earlier work that had inferred the current volcanic activity on Venus from indirect evidence like changes in a region's thermal emissivity data, variations in the atmosphere's sulfuric acid and morphological analysis of volcanic-like surface features. It was also discovered by scientists that Venus is likely to face nearly 42 volcanic eruptions every year and around 20 eruptions will last more than 1,000 Earth days. (With inputs from agencies)

France's former president Francois Hollande’s scooter, which at one time was at the centre of a presidential love scandal and led to legal action from a bodyguard nicknamed “Croissant Man”, was sold for more than €20,000 (approx. $21,750) at an auction. This was double the listed price of the scooter and much more than its secondhand value. The vehicle, which has been given the name “love scooter”, played an important role in the political crisis which happened in January 2014. After spending two years of his five-year presidential mandate, Hollande was captured by a paparazzi photographer riding the scooter to visit actor Julie Gayet late at night. The nation was not scandalised by reports of the French president making secret visits to his lover but by the fact that he was riding a Piaggio MP3 125cc scooter to do so. After the controversy broke out, Trierweiler suffered “exhaustion” and was admitted to hospital. President Hollande announced the end of his marriage, decided not to contest elections in 2017 and married Gayet in 2022. Auction of a politically infamous scooter On Sunday (May 26), the most famous scooter in France was auctioned off at a château in Montbazon in western France, as reported by AFP. Rouillac auction house organised the auction which saw an attendance of nearly 40 people and continued for just 10 minutes. The owner of a car museum Denis Breheret purchased the grey Piaggio MP3 125. Breheret said he wanted to exhibit the scooter at his museum, which is located in Jallais, so that "everyone can enjoy it". The scooter "is part of French history," Breheret said. "I will be presenting it among the 120 vehicles that I already own, which range from 1922 to the present day," he added. At the auction on Sunday (May 26), the vehicle's starting price was 10,000 euros (approx. $10875). "It's the Rolls (Royce) of scooters, but its value on the second-hand market is only estimated at between 1,300 euros (approx. $1413) and 4,000 euros (approx. $4350)," auctioneer Aymeric Rouillac said. "In January 2014, François Hollande's scooter entered the category of legendary vehicles," said the Rouillac auction house, in a statement. "It tells the story of a man like any other and of a nation torn between its desire for power and the realisation of its decline," it added. (With inputs from agencies)

Former United States president Donald Trump, while speaking to a group of wealthy campaign donors, said that the pro-Palestinian protests which have marred the universities will be crushed by him after he comes back to power. Trump said that if he is re-elected, he will deport all pro-Palestinian student protesters to ensure that they “behave”. He further said that there will be a crackdown on campus protests which have swept the country in the past few months. Trump reportedly said that the group of donors encompassed “98 per cent of my Jewish friends". Will push back movement by 25 or 30 years: Trump The presumptive Republican nominee said that protests against the Gaza war were part of a “radical revolution” and said to the predominantly Jewish donors that he would push the movement back 25 or 30 years if he defeats Joe Biden in November’s presidential election. “If you get me re-elected, we’re going to set that movement back 25 or 30 years,” said Trump. He added that any foreign students, if found participating in the protests, will be expelled by his administration. He also appreciated the efforts made by the New York police in clearing the encampments at Columbia University and added that a similar approach should be adopted by other cities. “It has to be stopped now," Trump said. US space agency NASA has collaborated with a private company to develop a new rocket that can reduce space travel time between Earth and Mars. The scientists will design the engine of this rocket in a way to sharply increase the amount of thrust for accelerating space travel and take rocket efficiency to another level. Thrust is the force which lifts the spacecraft in the air. A propulsion system produces this thrust by burning a gas or liquid fuel at the back of a spacecraft to propel it forward at high speed. The new design, which is known as the Pulsed Plasma Rocket (PPR), is being developed by Howe Industries, an Arizona-based company. Currently, the company is in the early stages of studying the technology after which they will start working on building engine models. Also Read: NASA launches satellite PREFIRE to monitor, predict and help mitigate climate change Howe Industries, in a recent statement, said, "Such rocket technology will be needed to support NASA’s plans to return humans to the moon and, after that, possibly Mars." A goal has been established by the space agency for building a long-term base in space. However, one hurdle in all these plans is the long travel times required in the current spacecraft systems. As per the estimated distance of NASA, the moon is around 382,500 kilometres away from Earth. The distance between Earth and its satellite keeps on changing because of the moon's orbit. The average distance between Earth and Mars is 225 million kilometres. NASA says SLS rocket system is most powerful one built till now NASA said it takes at least 200 days to reach Mars from Earth with existing spacecraft. The proposed Pulsed Plasma Rocket's developers said that it could reduce travel time to the red planet to around two months one way. Howe Industries said that the new design has given the rocket the power to reach extremely high speeds for completing “reasonable” space travel times. Watch: NASA restores contact with Voyager 1 after months of silence According to the development team's estimates, the PPR system has the capacity to produce around 100,000 Newtons of thrust. According to NASA, its Space Launch System (SLS) is the most powerful one ever built. The agency said that the SLS rocket system is likely to provide around 53 Newtons of thrust amid space travel. PPR's developers said that along with a huge increase in thrust, the new design also gives a “specific impulse” rate of 5,000. Specific impulse is a method which is used to measure the levels of thrust and efficiency in rocket engines in seconds. (With inputs from agencies)

Israel War Cabinet's member Benny Gantz hinted that the military of the country is not likely to change its course in the Rafah invasion even after the top UN court on Friday (May 24 ) gave the order to halt the widening offensive.

Israel War Cabinet's member Benny Gantz hinted that the military of the country is not likely to change its course in the Rafah invasion even after the top UN court on Friday (May 24 ) gave the order to halt the widening offensive. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to immediately stop the ongoing military offensive in Rafah, which is located in southern Gaza. However, it did not order a complete ceasefire. Even though Israel is not likely to comply with the court's order, it will increase the pressure on the country. The comments were made by Gantz after the top UN court gave an order to halt the Rafah offensive as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained silent over the entire issue. Gantz said that Israel “set out on a just and necessary campaign following the brutal massacre of its citizens". Also Read: World court orders Israel to 'immediately halt' offensive in Rafah “We will continue operating in accordance with international law wherever we might operate, while safeguarding to the best extent possible the civilian population. Not because of the ICJ, but because of who we are and the values we stand for," he added. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has said that accusations made about Tel Aviv carrying out a genocide in Gaza are “false, outrageous and morally repugnant.” “Israel has not and will not conduct military actions in the Rafah area which may inflict on the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” said Netanyahu’s government on Friday (May 24). The ICJ does not have a police force which can help them in ensuring that their orders are enforced. Israel was also asked by the court to reopen the Rafah border crossing. However, it abstained from ordering a complete cease-fire across Gaza. TRIGGER WARNING: Some readers may find the story disturbing. Discretion is advised. A personal assistant of a tech CEO the US accepted that he beheaded his boss after stealing $400,000 to hide his theft from his girlfriend, said his attorney on Friday (May 24). In January 2020, Saleh - who was CEO of Nigeria-based motorbike startup Gokada - had found that $90,000 was missing from a corporate spending account and had confronted Haspil for the same. Tyrese Haspil, 25, was finding ways to cover his crime from his employer so that his French girlfriend Marine Chaveuz would not be able to find out about the theft and break up with him, stated his defence. Haspil got entry into Fahim Saleh's $2.4 million Lower East Side apartment. He tasered and then killed him, said defence attorney Sam Roberts, while speaking to the jurors at Manhattan Supreme Court. Roberts made efforts to convince the 12-person jury that Haspil was going through “extreme emotional disturbance,” which led him to the murder. As per the prosecutors, Haspil was worried that he would be “abandoned” by his girlfriend after she found out about the theft. He thought that there were two options: “suicide or homicide.” He finally went with the latter. But Haspil continued stealing from the company through a Paypal account. After the threat of prosecution started hovering over him, Haspil decided that he would kill his boss, said the prosecutors. “Over this period of time, he was planning not only to commit the homicide but to get away with it …To cover it up and how to erase his debt and prevent Fahim Saleh from testifying in criminal proceedings,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Linda Ford told the court. Employee used credit card of boss to buy supplies for cleaning up his murder According to The New York Post, Haspil also allegedly used credit cards of Saleh to pay for rides and even bought supplies from the same card to clean up the murder. The prosecutors said that Haspil was wearing a mask when he zapped Saleh with a Taser, stabbed his body and later dismembered it by cutting off the head of the victim. Watch: India: Investigation on for 'murder' of Anwarul Azam | Police suspects Azim was honey-trapped After murdering his boss, Haspil vacuumed the area. The disk had a unique number, which matched with the Taser that was bought by Haspil before the murder, said prosecutors. Saleh’s body was found by his cousin in the living room. After radical modification and what is being called as “sinicisation", China's last major mosque - which once had Arabic-style architectural features - has now lost its domes and minarets, according to a report published in The Guardian.

After radical modification and what is being called as “sinicisation", China's last major mosque - which once had Arabic-style architectural features - has now lost its domes and minarets, according to a report published in The Guardian. China’s grandest mosque, the Grand Mosque of Shadian, is located in a small town in southwestern Yunnan province. Till last year, the 21,000 square metre complex was a large building with a tiled green dome at the top which was adorned with a crescent moon. Four long minarets and two small domes flanked the big dome. Also Read: Taiwan slams China for 'blatant provocation' after Beijing's military drills around self-ruled island ends However, in the latest photographs, the dome appears to have been replaced with a Han Chinese-style pagoda rooftop, as per the report. Also, the heights of minarets have been decreased and they have been converted into pagoda towers. It has also been reported that there is a faint trace of the crescent moon and star tiles. China's 'Sinification of Islam' Nearly 100 miles from Shadian, another landmark mosque of Yunnan was also renovated recently and its Arabic features were removed. The Chinese government in 2018 published a five-year plan on the “sinification of Islam”. A part of the plan was to resist “foreign architectural styles” and to promote “Islamic architecture … that is full of Chinese characteristics”. In a leaked memo of the Chinese Communist party, it was seen that local authorities were asked to “adhere to the principle of demolishing more and building less”. Watch: China-Taiwan tensions: Is China preparing to invade Taiwan? Speaking to The Guardian, Anthropologist at Cornell University Ruslan Yusupov said, “Sinification of these two landmark mosques marks the success of the campaign. Even if there are small mosques left of Arab style in villages, it will be difficult for local communities to contest their sinicisation”. Meanwhile, a historian of Islam in China at the University of Plymouth Hannah Theaker said that the mosque sinicisation campaign was moved ahead “province by province”, with Yunnan being the farthest province from the capital. “By 2023, there was a sense among communities that architectural sinicisation would reach the famous Yunnanese mosques, as the last major unsinicised mosques in China," Theaker said. The Grand Mosque of Shadian was first built in the Ming dynasty and destroyed amid the cultural revolution in an uprising which was called the Shadian incident. (With inputs from agencies)

In the latest study, published on Friday (May 24), it was found that unpasteurised milk - contaminated with bird-flu virus H5N1 - if fed to the mice, will make them sick and damage their organs.

In the latest study, published on Friday (May 24), it was found that unpasteurised milk - contaminated with bird-flu virus H5N1 - if fed to the mice, will make them sick and damage their organs. The study was conducted in the wake of the bird flu virus detected in the dairy herds of nine states in the United States. A new study has added more evidence to the argument that virus-infected raw milk may not be safe for mammals, especially humans. Virologist Yoshihiro Kawaoka said, “Don’t drink raw milk — that’s the message." Kawaoka works at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was head of the study. In the United States, most of the commercial milk is pasteurised. Food and Drug Administration has found traces of the virus in 20 per cent of dairy products sampled from grocery shelves across the country. Also Read: Bird flu in raw cow milk kills more than half of cats on Texas farm However, no signs of infectious virus have been found by the officials in those samples and have said that it is safe to consume pasteurised milk. While speaking to The New York Times, Boston University Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases Director Dr Nahid Bhadelia said that the findings will have global implications. “If this becomes a more widespread outbreak in cows, there are other places where there isn’t central pasteurisation and there are a lot more rural communities that drink milk," she added. How the study was carried out? While carrying out the study, Dr Kawaoka and his colleagues looked for viruses in the milk samples which were collected from an affected dairy herd in New Mexico. The researchers discovered that there was a slow decline in the levels of the virus in a sample of milk which was stored at 4 degrees Celsius and hinted at the chances of H5N1 being present in refrigerated raw milk for several weeks. The findings from the study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Watch: Gravitas | US: Bird Flu virus found in pasteurized milk, probe results awaited Meanwhile, the mice who drank the contaminated milk became ill and had ruffled fur and lethargy. Bird flu virus also discovered in an ill dairy cow's beef The US Department of Agriculture on Friday (May 24) said that bird flu was found in beef for the first time. However, the officials said that a single sickened dairy cow's meat did not have permission to enter the food supply of the country and hence, beef was safe to eat. The USDA said that they found the virus while testing 96 dairy cows, who were diverted from the supply after federal inspectors saw signs of illness while carrying out routine inspections of carcasses present at meat processing plants.
