Two years after the Uvalde school shooting, multiple state lawsuits were filed by the families of the victims in California and Texas in which they sued social media giant Meta and Activision, who are the makers of the popular video game "Call of Duty". The families also sued Daniel Defense, who is the manufacturer of the AR-15 which was used by the teen gunman in the shooting. In the lawsuits, the families claimed that these companies played a role in promoting the gun which was used to kill students. As per the lawsuit, the companies partnered to market the weapon to underage boys. Salvador Ramos, 18, had purchased the DDM4V7 rifle weeks before using it to kill 19 students and two teachers and injuring 17 others. He had purchased the weapon months after he started playing a version of the game and also posted different things about weapons on Instagram, said attorney Josh Koskoff, who was representing the families. Also Read: City of Uvalde to pay $2 million to families of school shooting victims The lawsuits were filed two days after the same group, which comprised 19 families, finalised a $2 million settlement with the city of Uvalde. Among the two lawsuits, one was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court against both Activision and Instagram's parent company Meta. The attorney filed the second lawsuit against Daniel Defense in Uvalde District Court. "Preying upon insecure, adolescent boys" The lawsuits have claimed that Instagram, Activision and Daniel Defense have been "partnering…in a scheme that preys upon insecure, adolescent boys," said attorneys, in a press release. They said that Meta and Activision "enabled and emboldened firearm manufacturers' efforts to expand the market for their weapons by granting unprecedented, direct and 24/7 access to children." In the lawsuits, they also alleged that on his 18th birthday, the gunman purchased the AR-15 because "he was targeted and cultivated online by Instagram, Activision and Daniel Defense. This three-headed monster knowingly exposed him to the weapon, conditioned him to see it as a tool to solve his problems and trained him to use it". Watch: How gun politics could affect US polls? "Simultaneously, on Instagram, the shooter was being courted through explicit, aggressive marketing. In addition to hundreds of images depicting and venerating the thrill of combat, Daniel Defense used Instagram to extol the illegal, murderous use of its weapons," said the attorneys. Meanwhile, in a statement to the New York Times, Activision said that “we express our deepest sympathies to the families” in Uvalde, but stated that “millions of people around the world enjoy video games without turning to horrific acts.” (With inputs from agencies)

In a path-breaking discovery, scientists have spotted the largest-ever planet-forming disk - officially called IRAS 23077+6707 - nearly 1,000 light-years away from Earth.

In a path-breaking discovery, scientists have spotted the largest-ever planet-forming disk - officially called IRAS 23077+6707 - nearly 1,000 light-years away from Earth. When the scientists initially spotted it in 2016, the planet-forming disk's true nature remained hidden for years. In the new research, which was carried out using advanced telescopes, it was found that this cosmic element is the largest planet-forming disk ever discovered. A cosmic butterfly? When the planet-forming disk was first observed by Ciprian T. Berghea from the U.S. Naval Observatory using the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS), the disk's unique appearance made it look like a giant cosmic butterfly. Also Read: Another milestone in alien hunt? Earth-size exoplanet may be hiding life in 'Goldilocks Zone' “After finding out about this possible planet-forming disk from Pan-STARRS data, we were keen to observe it with the SMA, which allowed us to understand its physical nature,” said Kristina Monsch, an astrophysicist who headed the Submillimeter Array (SMA) campaign, as reported by Earth.com. The SMA is an array of telescopes in Hawaii which is capable of detecting millimetre wavelengths that are important in unravelling the composition of cosmic objects like IRAS 23077. Protoplanetary disks are nothing but 'nurseries' of planets With the help of SMA, it was found that the massive protoplanetary disk is a cloud of dust and gas in which planets are born. “What we found was incredible — evidence that this was the largest planet-forming disk ever discovered. It is extremely rich in dust and gas, which we know are the building blocks of planets,” Monsch explained. Protoplanetary disks, in a way, are nurseries for planets. In these disks, giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and rocky planets like Earth and Mars are formed around young stars. These disks are filled with dust and gas in abundance and rotate in a way which helps astronomers find their sizes as well as the masses of their central stars. Here's what these disks contain While observing the IRAS 23077, the astronomers were able to gather multiple information regarding the unique protoplanetary disk. Watch: Gravitas: Most promising indication of life on another planet found “The data from the SMA offer us the smoking-gun evidence that this is a disk, and coupled with the estimate of the system’s distance, that it is rotating around a star likely two to four times more massive than our own sun,” Monsch said. Such information is important in understanding how the planets are formed in such extreme environments. (With inputs from agencies)

5 Nutrients Which May Help Increase Red Blood Cell Counts

There are some important nutrients which are needed to make Red Blood Counts. Hence, it is important to meet daily requirements for such nutrients which support the RBC production of the body. Here are five nutrients which are required to increase RBCs:

Iron is important for the production of red blood cells. Such iron-rich foods include seafood, lean meat, poultry, nuts, beans, lentils, raisins and iron-fortified breads and cereals.

Consuming vitamin B9 (folic acid) also helps in increasing red blood cell counts. Folic acid is filled with enriched breads and cereals, liver, spinach, brussels sprouts and asparagus.

One should also consume foods high in vitamin B12 - which are meat, poultry, fish, dairy products such as milk, and cheese, eggs, fortified products such as cereals and nutritional yeasts - which increase red blood cell counts.

Consuming copper doesn’t directly support the production of RBCs but it helps in increasing the iron which is needed to replicate RBCs. Foods high in copper are shellfish, liver and other organ meats, whole grain products, wheat bran cereals, chocolate, nuts and seeds.

Vitamin A (retinol) helps in making iron reach your red blood cell count. Foods rich in vitamin A are fish, eggs, liver, dairy products, leafy green vegetables, orange and yellow vegetables and tomato products.

A violent scuffle broke out between police officials and pro-Palestinian protesters after new encampments were erected inside the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on Thursday (May 23). The police officials were seen wearing riot gear when they walked inside the UCLA campus before clashes broke out with the protesters. In a joint statement, UCLA’s administrative vice chancellor Michael Beck and associate vice chancellor Rick Braziel said that school officials had “withdrawn consent to remain on campus for the demonstrators on Kerckhoff patio, asking them to disperse immediately.” UCLA officials said that the activities of the protesters, “including erecting barricades, establishing fortifications, and blocking access to parts of the campus and buildings,” had been disrupting campus operations. Also Read: NYU forces pro-Palestinian protesters to watch 'The Simpsons' as punishment As per the UCLA officials, those protesters who did not disperse will be facing a seven-day suspension, arrest and disciplinary action. School’s chancellor Gene Block earlier testified about an infamous protest, which took place on the campus earlier this month. As per KTLA, the chancellor said, “Tragically, it took several hours for law enforcement to quell the violence. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have been prepared to immediately remove the encampment if and when the safety of our community was put at risk." Meanwhile, the union members said that their free speech rights were violated when UC system leaders appealed to police to use force to clear pro-Palestinian encampments from the campuses. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, a graduate student and union member, Vincent Doehr said, “It’s a very fraught, violent environment that the administration has created here. The disruption to campus today is coming from administration shutting down this entire area due to an encampment that’s simply in the courtyard of one building.” Students walk out of Harvard graduation ceremony, chant ‘Free, free Palestine’ Students, wearing graduation robes, walked out of the Harvard graduation ceremony on Thursday (May 23) chanting “Free, free Palestine”. In continuation with the hunt for aliens, scientists have now found a new planet which may be habitable and have the capacity to sustain human life. The new planet named Gliese 12 b has been brought to attention in the latest study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on Thursday (May 23). Scientists said it is “the nearest, transiting temperate, Earth-sized planet found to date.” The planet was discovered by an international team of scientists with the help of NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). According to scientists, this is one of the few rocky planets which has the potential of carrying human lives. The planet is only 40 light-years away from Earth, which makes it the closest one yet discovered. Also Read: Is an ocean of magma creating atmosphere on this 'Super Earth'? The possibility has scientists excited "The majorly interesting thing is that this is a planet that's really nearby; in fact, it's one of the closest transiting planets to Earth," said University College of London scientist Larissa Palethorpe, who was part of the team, while speaking to Space.com. "It's either in the habitable zone of its star or it is right on the edge of it — so, it could be habitable," he added. In size, Gliese 12 b is only a little smaller in comparison to Earth and has been found orbiting a small and cool red dwarf star. Artists concept of Gliese 12 b whose estimated size may be as large as Earth or slightly smaller. (Credits: NASA) This means the exoplanet, even if its distance from its red dwarf parent is almost 7 per cent of the distance between the sun and Earth, still remains in the habitable zone of the planetary system. This habitable zone is called the "Goldilocks Zone". This region around a star is neither too cold nor too hot for hosting liquid water, which is an important ingredient for life. A child of Venus and Earth? This exoplanet also resembles Venus which is generally called Earth’s “twin” due to the similarities they share. "To find it to be such a similar size to Earth was kind of a lovely surprise. So that was a really nice thing to be able to nail down, but I think especially knowing that, in terms of habitability, it could lie between Earth and Venus, is really exciting," Palethorpe said. Gliese 12 b receives about 1.6 times more heat from its star in comparison to the energy Earth receives from the sun, said the scientists. Watch: Gravitas: Most promising indication of life on another planet found The average estimated surface temperature of the planet is only 50°F warmer than Earth’s. Although both Earth and Venus are in the sun's habitable zone, one planet can support life and its atmosphere is favourable while the other planet is inhospitable in nature. The study of Gliese 12 b can help scientists understand why there is a difference between the two. (With inputs from agencies)

In a new research, it has been found that the feathered dinosaurs may not have looked as imagined by people and portrayed in popular media. The study has found that these extinct reptiles were not entirely feathered and had either scaly skin or feathery patches. The new discovery has added a twist to the theories of how the evolution of feathers happened in the dinosaurs. How did the scientists find what feathered dinosaurs' skin looked like? The scientists exposed the unremarkable dinosaur fossil to ultraviolet (UV) light which revealed not-known patches of preserved skin which fluoresced a vibrant orange-yellow. The discovery was made during a Psittacosaurus specimen's examination by palaeontologists at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland. The new findings have hinted that the body of the dinosaurs was not solely covered by the feathers. Also Read: Climate change may have forced some dinosaur groups to become warm-blooded: Study The areas of preserved skin which did not have feathers and were exposed to UV light suggested that these reptiles have a more complex integumentary system than earlier believed. “The fossil truly is a hidden gem. The fossil skin is not visible to the naked eye, and it remained hidden when the specimen was donated to Nanjing University in 2021. Only under UV light is the skin visible, in a striking orange-yellow glow,” said Dr. Zixiao Yang, who was one of the lead researchers, as reported by Earth.com. Fossils of feathered dinosaurs hint at glassy skin: Study Advanced imaging techniques were used by the research team to utilise X-rays and infrared light for examining the details of the fossilised skin. This helped them observe the skin's intricate cellular structure which was kept preserved for millions of years. In the analysis, it was found that the primary composition of the skin was silica, a mineral compound which is commonly called the main component of glass. Watch: These animals are real climate heroes This is the first time that scientists have discovered silica-based skin preservation in vertebrate fossils. The well-preserved soft tissue of the fossil hinted that more secrets may be hidden in specimens. “The evolution of feathers from reptilian scales is one of the most profound yet poorly understood events in vertebrate evolution. While numerous fossils of feathers have been studied, fossil skin is much more rare,” said Prof Maria McNamara, a senior author of the study. (With inputs from agencies)

United Kingdom-born teenager Carlo Acutis, who died at the age of 15 from leukaemia in 2006, will now become the first "millennial saint" of the Catholic Church.

United Kingdom-born teenager Carlo Acutis, who died at the age of 15 from leukaemia in 2006, will now become the first "millennial saint" of the Catholic Church. Carlo Acutis was born in London in 1991. He was a computer prodigy who at a very early age had developed websites for spreading the teachings of the church online before he died. Since then, he has been known as "God's influencer". Acutis lived with his parents in Italy. After his death, his body was shifted to a tomb where it was kept on full display along with the boy's belongings. According to Carlo's mother, the boy at a very early age showed signs of religious devotion and used to ask his parents to take him to church at the age of 3. Also Read: 16 nuns denounce Pope Francis, break from Catholic Church under excommunicated Bishop The boy used to donate his pocket money to the church to help the poor. Carlo had himself learnt how to create websites for Catholic organisations. Acuti also built a platform which had documents of all the miracles which took place across the globe. Why did the church decide to grant Carlo Acutis 'sainthood'? The church decided to grant a 15-year-old sainthood after it was reported that a seven-year-old Brazilian boy made a sudden recovery from a rare pancreatic disease after touching one of Acutis's t-shirts. A priest had also prayed to Carlo Acutis on behalf of the child. The church deemed the boy's recovery as miraculous after the Pope assessed and approved it. According to Catholicism, one person is qualified to become a saint if two miraculous events happen related to them and are approved by the Pope. Also Watch: A second miracle attributed to Acutis was approved by Pope Francis on Thursday (May 23), which qualified the teenager for canonisation. In Florence, a university student was in critical condition after suffering a brain bleed after a bicycle accident, said her family. The student's mother prayed at the tomb of Acutis for her recovery after which she said her daughter was moved from the ventilator and later in the scans, the brain injury had disappeared. Acutis is the first person to be canonised among those born in the 1990s. (With inputs from agencies)
