Tens of thousands of homes across the UK were left without power on Saturday and two people were killed after Storm Darragh hit the country with strong winds and caused pre-Christmas travel disruption.

Darragh, the fourth named storm of the season, is also expected to bring heavy rain through the weekend, with the UK's Environment Agency issuing dozens of flood warnings.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told Sky News on Saturday the storm posed a "challenging situation".

Two men were killed as a result of trees falling on their cars in separate incidents in Lancashire, northwest England, and in the west Midlands.

In Wales, the Met Office estimated gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour), with a "major incident" declared in parts of Wales due to the extensive disruption.

The storm has had "very significant effects in many parts of Wales, including on transport, energy infrastructure and property", the Welsh devolved leader said in a statement, warning that the effects could be "felt for some days yet".

As of Saturday afternoon 177,000 homes in England, Scotland and Wales were without power, according to the Energy Networks Association.

Trains were disrupted or suspended on several routes including from Glasgow to Edinburgh in Scotland, and between Cambridge and Stansted Airport in eastern England.

Rail operator CrossCountry, which operates nationwide, put a "do not travel" notice in place for Saturday due to cancellations and severe delays.

Network Rail Wales suspended trains on the Welsh northern coast due to a "fallen tree blocking the line", and several bridges in southern England and Wales were closed for safety reasons.

In Northern Ireland, thousands were left without power, and several bus and train services were suspended or delayed.

Christmas markets and sporting events were postponed, including the Merseyside derby between Premier League leaders Liverpool and Everton.

In Ireland, which issued an "orange" wind warning, 175,000 homes were without electricity as of Saturday evening, according to ESB Networks, which said there was "widespread and extensive damage to electricity infrastructure".

Dublin Airport said "a number of flights scheduled for Saturday morning have been cancelled by airlines" due to the storm.

Darragh comes two weeks after Storm Bert battered much of Britain, causing "devastating" flooding in parts of Wales and knocking out power to thousands of homes in Ireland.

The UK's Met Office had issued a rare red alert for high winds overnight to Saturday morning (0300 to 1100 GMT) covering parts of Wales and southwest England.

A separate amber warning, which is less serious than the red alert but still flags a "potential risk to life and property", covering a larger stretch of the UK and Northern Ireland is in place until Saturday night.

Indian police on Tuesday (Dec 3) said that they will investigate Elon Musk-owned Starlink internet service in order to hunt down drug smugglers.

The smugglers used a satellite internet device to navigate deep seas and to bring meth worth $4.25 billion inside the Indian waters for the first time.

The police made their biggest seizure as they uncovered more than 6,000 kg of meth in the remote outpost of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands last week in Myanmar.

The boat was filled with sacks of suspected contraband and six Myanmar nationals were detained after the seizure.

Starlink gets dragged into smuggling case

The incident for the first time brought into light how a device of Starlink was used for navigating and reaching Indian waters, which raised concerns, said Hargobinder S. Dhaliwal, who is the police officer in charge of the case, while speaking to Reuters.

Starlink has earlier claimed that it covers international waters and is now planning to launch in India but has added that its coverage in territorial waters depends on government approval.

"This (case) is different because it is bypassing all the legal channels. They directly operated (phones) with satellite, creating a Wi-Fi hotspot," Dhaliwal said.

He added that he has planned to get details from Starlink, like who purchased the device along with its usage history. "They (smugglers) were using Starlink since their journey started from Myanmar," he added.

According to the estimate of Andaman and Nicobar police, the retail market value of seized meth was 360 billion rupees ($4.25 billion).

According to Dhaliwal, the smugglers used the Starlink Mini device, which has been described as "a compact, portable kit that can easily fit in a backpack" on its website.

The police have said that they are investigating if there is any involvement of local or foreign syndicates in the whole network.

In its report, the UNODC said that India has been methamphetamine's growing transit and destination market.

Amid the volatility in the stock market, mutual funds, and cryptocurrencies, investors are on the lookout to invest their money in something more stable in terms of profit-churning.

In this hunt, something which has emerged as a promising but stable investment is commercial real estate (CRE), which refers to the property used for business-related purposes or for workspace.

Generally, tenants lease out commercial real estate for conducting income-generating activities.

Ways to invest in commercial real estate?

There are two ways in which investments are made in commercial real estate. One is direct investment, in which the investor gets ownership of the physical property.

Also Read: Money-Wise | Real estate vs stocks: Which investment has more promising returns for you?

Investment in commercial real estate best suits people who either have good knowledge of the industry or the capacity to employ firms for doing that. This is a high-risk but high-reward real estate investment.

Investors can also indirectly invest in the commercial real estate market by investing in ownership of securities like exchange-traded funds (ETFs) or real estate investment trusts (REITs), which invest in commercial property-related stocks.

The investors can also invest in companies catering to the commercial real estate market, such as realtors and banks.

Experts decode how promising is investing in CRE

The investment in commercial real estate is indeed stable, but is it profitable enough? Here's what experts suggest.

Svaraj Anand, COO, Neo developers

Commercial real estate (CRE) offers stable and predictable returns. Its stability stems from the asset’s intrinsic value—physical properties in economically active areas tend to appreciate over time.

CRE provides investors with fixed rental income and the potential for significant capital appreciation, making it a proven method for wealth creation.

One of CRE’s major advantages is its insulation from market fluctuations. Commercial properties are often leased on long-term contracts, ensuring consistent rental income even during short-term economic downturns.

Additional benefits include tax advantages like depreciation, and investors can diversify further by allocating funds to REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), which combine liquidity with security.

Gunjan Goel, Director, Goel Ganga Developments

Commercial properties in good markets such as Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are not as speculative as cryptocurrencies and have high rental yield and good appreciation in the long run.

The introduction of RERA and GST has also increased transparency in the sector, moving it towards being a more regulated sphere, which enhances security for commercial real estate investments.

After the pandemic, there has been a spike in institutional investment into commercial spaces, and with the creation of hybrid work models, it can be said that the sector is safer as compared to investing in the high-risk crypto and stock markets.

Aman Gupta, Director, RPS Group

New developments such as data centres and co-working spaces, logistics parks, and others have opened new avenues for investments beyond just offices.

Government policies such as ‘Make in India’ as well as continuing shifts in the business environment towards the digital economy are supporting the persistent commercial property market.

As opposed to the volatile markets, commercial real estate has intrinsic value, a potential for long-term appreciation, and also protects against inflation.

However, one should always remember that there are some disadvantages involved in every kind of investment. Investing in commercial real estate has its own drawbacks, like heavy investment, fewer tax incentives, costlier loans, and maintenance woes.

A unique astronomical event will take place on December 7 when Earth will align itself between Jupiter and the Sun.

Due to this alignment, the gas giant will remain visible all through the night and the skywatchers will get a rare chance to see the biggest planet of our solar system.

As per the experts, Jupiter will be 611 million kilometres or 380 million miles away from Earth at approximately 5:00 am (local time) on December 6.

This closeness between the two planets will guarantee that Jupiter will shine its brightest and give skywatchers the best viewing opportunity to take a look at its atmospheric belts and Galilean moons.

Here's how you can spot Jupiter

On December 7, the sky-gazers should try to look east-northeast close to the constellation Taurus. Jupiter is expected to rise at sunset and set at sunrise.

Using a telescope, people can look at the planet's intricate cloud bands and spot its four largest moons which are Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

During this celestial alignment, the sunlight will get reflected from Jupiter and take nearly 34 minutes to reach Earth. It will even be visible to the stargazers across India.

As per Forbes, the faster orbit of Earth will momentarily place it between the Sun and Jupiter.

Eventually, 100 per cent of the disc of Jupiter will be visible. This means Jupiter will be in opposition to the Earth and will become extremely bright.

Here's what is 'full' Jupiter

A full Jupiter means the planet's opposition to the Earth because the Sun fully illuminates its sun-facing side.

From Earth, people can see the sun-facing side of Jupiter and much similar to a full moon, 50 per cent of the moon remains always lit by the Sun.

United States President-elect Donald Trump is once again gaining popularity among an army of clay figurines who have their pants and are shown defecating.

The figurines have been created by Spanish craftsmen as part of a tradition which is popular in the north-eastern Catalonia region of the country.

Why are 'pooper' figurines made in Spain?

Originally, the "caganer" (pooper) figures were designed as comical shepherds who remain hidden from visitors, however, the tradition has expanded and started including celebrities and world leaders who have enjoyed popularity.

Since the 18th century, the figurines have been sold in Catalonia around Christmas. The people place them in nativity scenes with the hope that they will bring a rich harvest and good luck.

The original caganer, which if translated from Catalan means “the fertiliser”, was the figurine of a man who wore a red and black hat along with a peasant costume and was shown performing his biological functions.

The people believed that his fertile deposits when will be mixed with the soil, would result in a rich harvest.

CEO of online store Caganer.com Sergi Alos said that the surge in sales of United States presidential candidates pooping is a reflection of the outcome of the presidential elections in the country.

"Trump has been massive, overwhelming, just like in the elections," Alos said.

Scientists have made it possible for people to see the real face of Santa Claus for the first time in nearly 1,700 years.

Saint Nicholas of Myra was a Christian saint who was known to give gifts to people and was the inspiration behind the Dutch folk figure of Sinterklaas who later became Santa Claus.

However, there was no image of the man who was behind the myth and what the world saw was the representations of 'Old Saint Nick' who dated to centuries after his death in 343 AD.

Now for the first time, the man's actual face has been revealed after it was rebuilt forensically by the experts using his skull.

The lead author of the new study Cicero Moraes said it was a "strong and gentle face". For creating the face, the data collected in the 1950s by Luigi Martino was used by Moraes and his team with permission from the Centro Studi Nicolaiani.

"We initially reconstructed the skull in 3D using this data. We then traced the profile of the face using statistical projections. We supplemented this with the anatomical deformation technique, in which the tomography of a living person's head is adjusted so that the virtual donor's skull matches that of the saint. The final face is an interpolation of all this information, seeking anatomical and statistical coherence," he said.

It's purely white and truly blank. A barren white canvas has given an entirely new meaning to “drawing a blank.”

The canvas has been valued at more than $1.5 million and has been put up for auction in Germany.

The artwork looks completely blank, however, the all-white canvas has a slightly darker white frame which has been painted with enamel and enamel paints, which are generally used for painting metal.

These paint types were used over a cotton canvas and it resulted in a very delicate piece which was not possible to be sent for a global view before the sale.

“The material is very sensitive and the smallest traces in the flawless surface would immediately reduce the value of the work significantly,” said Ketterer Kunst, in a statement in which the painting was described to be “in very good condition.”

“That’s why we are not sending it on a journey," he said.

Robert Ryman and his experimental art

Robert Ryman was a painter who was famous for his experimental work which was generally void of colour and stark white. In 2019, he died at the age of 88.

The painter did not receive any formal art training, but actually, he was a jazz pianist who indulged in painting as a hobby after he took the job of a security guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Some of his sterile works started debates in the art community, however, many of his pieces were sold for millions.

“White is not always white. The white colour makes light, movement and the structure of the material visible,” said Simone Wichmann, who is the auction house expert.

“The viewer is challenged and becomes the creator of the art," Wichmann added.

A Redditor took to social media to share his confusion after he received a total of eight fines while driving on a highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and then back home.

The user said that he was fined for "slow driving" and was not aware of the rules. He added that he got the first notifications late, and if he had received them earlier, he would have been able to avoid subsequent fines.

However, the netizens did not show any sympathy for the man and said that his lack of awareness could prove to be a "hazard" to road safety.

"I travelled to Abu Dhabi from Dubai yesterday. I was driving at 110-115 km/h in the second lane (next to the fast lane). When I reached home at night, I got a message about a total of 8 fines for both my drive towards Dubai and towards Abu Dhabi," wrote the Reddit user (snazzy_champ).

"I was not aware of this rule, and there was no flash from the camera. I had no idea about the fine for slightly slow driving, and it wasn't mentioned on any signs. I travelled to Abu Dhabi in the morning and returned at night," he added.

The user called the incident "totally unfair" and said that "There was no notification until I reached home. Had there been any notification for the morning drive, I would have been more careful on my way back to Dubai. I know it's my mistake, but fining without any notification or news article is totally unfair."

In the post, the Redditor shared a screenshot of the message he received along with the fines.

The posts received comments from various users on social media.

"The rule is displayed literally every 3 km," said another user.

"If OP drove slightly slower, there are 3rd and 4th lanes for that," commented a user.

"The minimum speed is 120 km/h in that lane, and when the rule was announced, it was covered in the news and official socials. What's truly unfair is people thinking they can drive as slowly as they want just because they are in the second lane while being a hazard to others on the road," said a user.

I know it's my mistake, but fining without any notification or news article is totally unfair." In the post, the Redditor shared a screenshot of the message he received along with the fines. Nelson said that she was instructed to take the suitcase to Japan and hand it to the man who she thought was her online lover.

The man, who was named as "Kelly" by Nelson, had said to her that he was a Nigerian man running a fashion business.

The man reportedly paid for her flight to Japan but did not show up when she arrived at Narita airport.

As per reports, the pair had shared numerous text messages with each other and spoken multiple times on video chats.

The prosecutors said that the case had links with an online romance scam, but insisted that the woman was aware of what she was carrying inside the suitcase when she departed for Laos.

After she arrived in Japan, the bag was not declared by Nelson, and she claimed to be in the country on business.

“If she had nothing to hide, why didn’t she just tell the truth, and why didn’t she tell customs that she was going to see her fiancé?,” said prosecutor Ogata in the court, as reported by the ABC.

The woman's daughters, however, claimed that she was innocent. Speaking at the court, one of the daughters of Nelson, Kristal Hilaire, said that her mother was “a good person” in a hearing last month.

“She thought she was coming to Japan for her love story. She didn’t have any other intentions other than that. And that’s what we need everyone to know and hear at the court this week," Hilaire added.
