Congress on Tuesday (Feb 18) raised concerns over the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the new Chief Election Commissioner, calling it a &ldquo;hastily-taken decision&rdquo; taken by the Centre to bypass the Supreme Court's scrutiny.
Kumar is the first CEC to be appointed under the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, a new law on the appointment of the members of the Election Commission (EC).
His term will continue until January 26, 2029, following which the EC is expected to announce the next Lok Sabha election schedule.

Shortly after the appointment, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal said that the decision was a &ldquo;hasty midnight move&rdquo; by the government to circumvent the Supreme Court's scrutiny.
&ldquo;This goes against the spirit of our Constitution, and what has been reiterated by the Supreme Court in many cases - for the electoral process to have sanctity, the CEC must be an impartial stakeholder,&rdquo; Venugopal wrote on X. &ldquo;The amended law removed the CJI from the CEC selection panel, and the government ought to have waited until the Supreme Court&rsquo;s hearing on 19th February before selecting the CEC.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Such egregious behaviour only confirms the doubts that many have expressed about how the ruling regime is destroying the electoral process and bending the rules for its benefit. Be it fake voter lists, schedules favouring the BJP, or concerns around EVM hacking&mdash;the government and the CECs it appoints are subject to deep suspicion because of such incidents,&rdquo; he said.

Congress leader Manickam Tagore also reacted to the appointment, saying democracy deserves better.
&ldquo;The Government&rsquo;s hasty midnight appointment of the new CEC undermines the spirit of our Constitution and free elections. As LoP Rahul Gandhi rightly said, this should&rsquo;ve waited for the SC hearing on February 19,&rdquo; he posted on X. &ldquo;Rushing it shows their intent to bypass scrutiny. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari also condemned the appointment.&nbsp;
&ldquo;... The formation of the selection committee for this matter has been challenged in the Supreme Court. The matter has also been accepted for hearing in the Supreme Court. In such a situation, what was the hurry that the appointment was made during this time? ... In a democracy, elections should not only be fair but should also appear to be fair ... This is a contempt of the Supreme Court and the basic spirit of the Constitution,&rdquo; Tiwari told ANI.

Congress condemns ‘hasty’ appointment of new CEC Gyanesh Kumar

I didn&rsquo;t believe I would ever get to experience something so unique that happens only once in 144 years. The Maha Kumbh 2025 at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj was indeed an experience of a lifetime.
The &lsquo;Purna&rsquo; (complete) Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years in one of the four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain, where the nectar of immortality from mythological Samudra Manthan is believed to have fallen. However, the Maha Kumbh Mela is held only once in 144 years which happens during a unique planetary alignment, making it even more special.
I travelled by car to the world&lsquo;s largest religious gathering, a destination about 670 kilometres from my home in Delhi-NCR. It was the farthest journey I had ever embarked upon by road.

<h2>Challenges on our way</h2>
The travel to this spiritual place was not an easy one. We started our journey at 7:15 am on February 6. We took the Yamuna Expressway, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and then the Kaushambi-Prayagraj Highway. Our journey was smooth until we reached the outskirts of Prayagraj. It was after that the traffic started to swell and we got stuck in a massive jam.
As we tried to use Google Maps to find our way to the destination, multiple diversions forced us to take routes that were nearly three to four times longer. The traffic measures were put in place to prevent overcrowding in Prayagraj city.
One thing that amazed me during this moment was that no one seemed agitated by these, as they waited to be a part of the grandeur of the Maha Kumbh. Thanks to the Uttar Pradesh Police, who were extremely helpful and guided everyone calmly on their way to the Kumbh, we finally managed to enter the city after the five-hour-long jam.

We reached our accommodation near the Arail Ghat at about 12:30 am on February 7. The area overlooked the beautifully illuminated Triveni Sangam across the river Yamuna. What we expected to be a 12-14 hours journey, turned out to be almost an 18-hour drive. But what we experienced the next morning, was worth it.
<h2>The ghat</h2>
When I woke up, the streets of Prayagraj were already bustling with pilgrims heading to the Triveni Sangam.
My family and I walked along the Yamuna River ghat towards the boat booth, from where the boat rides began. Since we were at Arail Ghat, the only way to reach Triveni Sangam was to board a row boat.
The walk to the starting point of the boats was approximately 4 kilometres. On our way, we took a brief moment to marvel at the arrangements set up around the area.
Walking along the ghat also made me feel connected to every person around us. It was a beautiful thought and understanding that while everyone undertook different journeys, we all were there to experience the same thing that could not be described in words.

There were thousands of people on the ghat&ndash;while some walked towards the boats, some were returning, and others were engaged in buying items for rituals and souvenirs from the vendors.
It occurred to me at that point that Maha Kumbh is not just a pilgrimage. Apart from the spiritual activities, the 45-day festival offers a lot to people and may even change their lives. The city boomed with opportunities for street vendors, boat rowers, the hospitality industry, food outlets and other businesses.
<h2>Dip at Triveni Sangam</h2>
We reached the boat booth and rented a boat to the Sangam point, where the holy Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet.
The boat ride was peaceful and mesmerising as hundreds of seagulls covered the river surface, creating a picturesque view.

We reached a small island where our boat stopped near the shore, close to the convergence of the sacred rivers. Despite millions taking a holy dip in the river, the water was clean. From there, we could see Yamuna merging into Ganga and becoming one.
We removed our footwear before getting off the boat and immersing our feet in the cold, gentle water. After walking towards a deeper section until the water was at waist level, we took a dip in the water despite the cold. While it was afternoon and the sun was just above our heads, I was feeling slightly cold in the gentle breeze.

On our way back, we fed the seagulls from the boat and took pictures. Once we were back at the ghat, we changed into fresh clothes at one of the changing rooms built in the area. On our way back to our accommodation, we took a brief break to have delicious snacks at the stalls near the ghat.
<h2>&lsquo;Experience of a lifetime&rsquo;</h2>
Shortly after reaching there, we packed our stuff and vacated the room to head back home. Even though we were tired, we managed to leave by 4 pm.
We got into traffic jams on our way out to Prayagraj too, although much less than the ones we encountered previously. We drove overnight to our home, taking necessary halts along the way.
Despite the massive crowd of pilgrims in Prayagraj, the arrangements around the ghats were beyond our expectations.
While the journey ended sooner than I liked, it will stay with me forever as a cherished memory.

Dip at Sangam: My journey to Maha Kumbh 2025

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met the Bangladesh foreign adviser Touhid Hossain on Sunday (Feb 17) to discuss bilateral relations since the ouster of former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s, who is currently in India.

Following terror attacks in India by Pakistan-based outfits, PM Modi declined to attend the 19th SAARC summit hosted by his then counterpart M Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad in November 2016. The SAARC has remained impasse since then as leaders of other nations also decided to stay away and the conclave was cancelled.

Indian EAM S Jaishankar meets Bangladesh FM Touhid Hossain, discusses BIMSTEC

Singapore's Leader of the Opposition, Pritam Singh, was found guilty by a district court on Monday (Feb 17) of lying under oath to a parliamentary committee. He is facing a maximum sentence of three years behind bars with a fine of up to S$7,000 on each charge.&nbsp;
Singh, 48, the Indian-origin secretary-general of the Workers' Party, faced two counts of giving false answers to a parliamentary committee during an investigation surrounding a lie that a former party legislator had admitted in 2021. He was found guilty on both charges by a district court.

This comes months ahead of the expected elections in the Southeast Asian nation as the political opposition is seeking to challenge the dominance of the People's Action Party (PAP), which has ruled the city-state since 1959.
District Judge Luke Tan, who delivered the verdict, said that Singh did not do enough to get MP Raeesah Khan to admit to her lie in parliament, contrary to what he told the committee.
He also said, giving credence to Khan's testimony, that Singh had told her to &ldquo;take the lie to the grave.&rdquo;
Singh&rsquo;s sentence will determine whether he could stand in the general elections, which are expected to be held before November this year.

<h2>Europe warns Trump against striking &lsquo;dirty deal&rsquo;</h2>
European governments warned a &ldquo;dirty deal&rdquo; between Trump and Moscow on ending the Ukraine war was doomed to fail, adding that they and Kyiv must be included in the negotiation talks.
Speaking to reporters at NATO talks in Brussels, EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas emphasised that no deal &ldquo;behind our backs&rdquo; would work and accused Washington of &ldquo;appeasement&rdquo; towards Russia.
&ldquo;We shouldn't take anything off the table before the negotiations have even started because it plays to Russia's court and it is what they want,&rdquo; she said.&nbsp;

However, China alleged that the Australian aircraft &ldquo;intentionally intruded&rdquo; into its airspace, and Chinese jets responded in a &ldquo;legitimate, lawful, professional, and restrained&rdquo; manner.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles told Sky News on Thursday (Feb 13) that the flares fired by the Chinese plane passed the Australian jet at a less than 30 metres distance.
&ldquo;The J-16 was so close that there's no way you could have been able to ensure that the flares did not hit the P-8,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Had any of those flares hit the P-8, that would have definitely had the potential for significant damage to that aircraft,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>First clash in nine months</h2>
The recent incident is the first clash between the military of the two countries in nine months.

In May last year, Australia said that one of its helicopters, which was part of a Security Council mission, had to perform an evasive action to avoid flares from a Chinese J-10 fighter plane over the Yellow Sea.
In November 2023, Canberra also accused the Chinese navy of using sonar pulses in international waters off Japan, which injured Australian divers.
<h2>Monitoring Chinese vessels, says Australia </h2>
In a separate statement on Thursday (Feb 13), Australia said that it was monitoring three Chinese navy vessels that entered its maritime approaches.

This comes the same day a federal judge allowed the deferred resignation programme to go into effect. Around 75,000 federal employees accepted the administration&rsquo;s offer to leave their jobs in exchange for eight months' severance.

The Department of Education employees were informed of their termination through a letter stating, &ldquo;The Agency finds, based on your performance, that you have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest,&rdquo; reported CNN.
The firings at the department have affected employees across the agency, including the general counsel&rsquo;s office, the Federal Student Aid office, and the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, a union source told CNN.&nbsp;

A similar letter was sent to Small Business Administration employees on Tuesday (Feb 11), informing them of their termination.&nbsp;
On Friday (Feb 7) and Monday (Feb 10), probationary employees across the agency received an unsigned draft notice of termination, according to CNN. However, another email was sent advising employees that the draft notice &ldquo;was sent in error - and as such, it is not currently in effect.&rdquo;
