Russia and Ukraine reach grain deal: Wheat prices drop to pre-war levels

Russia and Ukraine today signed separate agreements in Istanbul with Turkey and the United Nations that would permit Russia to export grain and fertilisers and Ukraine to resume grain shipments to international markets, respectively. This ended a standoff that threatened global food security while the two nations are at war in Ukraine.

Oleksandr Kubrakov, the infrastructure minister for Ukraine, Hulusi Akar, the defence minister for Turkey, and Antonio Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations, all signed the paper.

The agreement to reopen Ukraine's Black Sea ports will free up millions of tonnes of grain that have been trapped in Ukrainian ports since Russia invaded on February 24. This will alleviate concerns about a possible worldwide food catastrophe that Russia's invasion has sparked.

These are the key points of the deal:

The UN secretary general, Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey all signed the accord.

Turkey assisted in negotiating the agreement with Russia to open the Black Sea grain trade route from Ukraine.

Ukraine decided against signing a direct agreement with Russia; instead, they will presumably sign "mirror" agreements.

The teams from Russia and Ukraine are both in Istanbul to sign the contract, though.

Following the announcement of the contract, the price of wheat dropped on international markets.

Russia has been blocking Ukraine's main Black Sea ports, despite the fact that it is one of the world's top grain producers.

Ukrainian grain is in limited supply around the world, which has driven up food costs and put millions at risk of going hungry.

In Ukraine, almost 20 million tonnes of grain intended for export are stuck. This might increase to 75 million tonnes after this year's harvest, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Earlier on Friday, Ukraine declared that it would not enter into any direct agreements with Russia and would only sign a pact with Turkey and the UN to restore grain exports that had been halted by Moscow's invasion.

No agreements are signed between Ukraine and Russia. Mykhaylo Podolyak, a presidential advisor, posted on Twitter that "we will sign an agreement with Turkey and the UN," adding that Russia would sign a separate "mirror" deal.

'Depressed' Indian student dies by suicide after YouTube views drop

A third case of monkeypox has been reported in the southwestern coastal state of India, Kerala, this time in a visitor from the United Arab Emirates who arrived in the state on July 6. According to Veena George, the health minister, a 35-year-old in the Malappuram district has been diagnosed with monkeypox. The person had arrived from the UAE on July 6; on July 13, he began to feel feverish. And on July 15, he started to get rashes. As a result, he was quarantined, and samples were submitted for analysis and confirmation.

He is receiving treatment in isolation at the Manjeri Government Medical College hospital, and overall, he is doing well. His close associates have been included in the health department's surveillance system. This is the third incidence of monkeypox to be reported in the nation, and Kerala discovered all three cases in foreign travellers.

Also read | Monkeypox: New study shows symptoms are making recognition of case more difficult

An individual from Kollam who had just arrived from the United Arab Emirates at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport became the first case on July 14. On July 18, four days later, a traveller from the UAE was the subject of the second case discovered in Kannur. Both of these males are receiving therapy and being isolated. So far, no close contacts who have been isolated have tested positive for the virus.

As soon as the first case was discovered, Kerala prepared a surveillance action plan. At the moment, all districts are on high alert for any fever with rashes, especially given that this has also been the season of tropical fevers, with cases of measles, chicken pox, hand, foot, and mouth disease, dengue, and scrub typhus being reported from many districts.

However, the attention is virtually entirely on foreign arrivals when it comes to monkeypox. Airport help stations have been set up, and local health professionals have been instructed to keep an eye out for "suspicious cases," particularly if the person had recently travelled to one of the nations where monkeypox has been documented.

Also read | Monkeypox: New study shows symptoms are making recognition of case more difficult An individual from Kollam who had just arrived from the United Arab Emirates at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport became the first case on July 14. On July 18, four days later, a traveller from the UAE was the subject of the second case discovered in Kannur. Both of these males are receiving therapy and being isolated. So far, no close contacts who have been isolated have tested positive for the virus. × As soon as the first case was discovered, Kerala prepared a surveillance action plan.
The first vinyl records made of bioplastic will hopefully replace the need for the toxic PVC ones. A British company claims it produced the bioplastic records using materials other than oil or gas, like sugars and starches, and added that bioplastics don’t generate any toxic waste during the manufacturing process.
The climate change advocacy NGO Music Declares Emergency, created in 2019 by musicians and other industry professionals, has endorsed the new bioplastic vinyl from the UK company Evolution Music.
“If Evolution can deliver an alternative to guilt-free vinyl, it could get rid of one of the key polluting elements of the music industry completely,” the NGO’s co-founder Lewis Jamieson said.
Toxic, chlorine-based compounds are released during the production of PVC, which Greenpeace describes as the “most environmentally destructive material” and which is currently used to make all vinyl records. These chemicals are “building up in the water, air, and food chain.”
The recent surge in vinyl sales, which exceeded $1 billion in only the United States last year, has brought the issue to light (a first since the mid-1980s).
Few predicted the mid-2000s vinyl rebirth, thus record labels were forced to scramble to obtain PVC, frequently depending on foreign producers with questionable safety records.
Kyle Devine, who wrote a book on the environmental impact of the music industry, “Decomposed”, said the PVC for 90 percent of US vinyls in 2015 came from a Thai company that was “pouring pollution into the Bangkok river”.
“PVC is an especially nasty plastic to make. It’s a difficult one to dispose of, to recycle or decompose,” he said.
The current dominance of streaming and digital music, he continued, should not be interpreted as a solution to the climate impact of the music industry.
“Digital data still consumes energy and takes up space. In fact, considering the scale and scope of the music industry now, it probably has a greater environmental impact than ever before,” Devine remarked.
Through a prize draw, Evolution distributed the first 20 bioplastic records, which featured a collection of up-and-coming musicians like the electro duo Bicep and American singer Angel Olsen.

Kim Durkee, according to 9to5Mac, received alerts from her Apple Watch on two separate nights in May that her heart was experiencing atrial fibrillation. According to the report, which cited CBS News, she initially believed the wearable was misreading her, but then she received a second warning.
