A 38-year-old Indian-American has been convicted of international parental kidnapping after he took his US-born child to India and later failed to bring the kid back to the mother in the United States.

Amitkumar Kanubhai Patel, from Vadodara, who formerly lived in Edison, New Jersey, was convicted last week of one count of international parental kidnapping following a five-day trial before US District Judge Renee Marie Bumb in Camden federal court in New Jersey.

The international parental kidnapping offence for which Patel stands convicted carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a maximum fine of USD 250,000. He will be sentenced in November of this year.

Patel is a naturalised US citizen who had been living in India. He was convicted of obstructing the parental rights of his child’s mother by kidnapping the child and failing to return the child to the United States when ordered to do so, US Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said Monday.

According to documents filed in this case and the evidence at trial, the child’s mother and Patel were in a relationship and resided together in New Jersey from August 2015 through July 2017.

The two never married. In November 2016, they had a child, who was born in Edison Township.

According to the child’s mother, Patel wanted to take the child to India to introduce him to Patel’s parents and obtain DNA testing, which Patel claimed was necessary for the child to claim property that Patel’s family owned in India.

Patel also told the child’s mother that in order to obtain an Indian visa for the child, he would need to secure sole custody, which required them to go to court.

Patel instructed the mother to tell the court that they had a mutual understanding regarding the custody of their child. Patel instructed the mother to state that she did not have a work permit and, since she was unemployed, she could not care for her child.

In May 2017, Patel took the child’s mother to New Jersey Superior Court, Chancery Division Family Court, in order to obtain sole custody of the child.

According to the mother, the majority of the hearing was conducted in English with no translator. At the time of the hearing, the mother spoke limited English. The mother answered the court’s questions as she had been instructed by Patel and was not represented by an attorney during the hearing.

The New Jersey Superior Court granted Patel sole legal custody of the child premised on the consent of the child’s mother to the arrangement, but specifically reserved for the mother the ability to file for joint legal custody if she so chose in the future.

Upon receiving the court order, Patel obtained visas to India for himself and the child, and booked air travel, telling the child’s mother that they would only be gone for two weeks to a month.

After taking the child to India in July 2017, Patel called the mother and said that he was never bringing the child back to the United States.

The child’s mother obtained legal counsel and returned to the New Jersey Superior Court.

In October 2018, the New Jersey Superior Court entered an order directing Patel to return the child to the United States immediately. The mother’s counsel emailed the family court order to Patel, who did not return the child to the United States.

In October 2020, Patel and the child flew from India to the United Kingdom.

Upon arrival, Patel was arrested based on a provisional arrest request submitted by the United States.

After a custody hearing in London pursuant to the Hague Convention, the London Court ordered that it was in the best interest of the child that he be returned to his paternal grandparents in India. Patel was extradited to the United States in September 2021 from England to stand trial in the case.

Indian-American man found guilty of international parental kidnapping

Everyone loves to travel, right? But have you thought about making your own aeroplane to fulfil your aspirations? Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, a native of the Southern Indian State of Kerala, built a four-seater aircraft for family vacations. London-based Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, a native of Alappuzha in the Southern Indian State of Kerala, has successfully constructed a four-seater aeroplane in a project that took close to 18 months to complete.

Now, Thamarakshan and his wife fly around the UK and Europe in their home-built aircraft, along with their two daughters. They have travelled to a number of nations aboard their single-engine Sling TSi, which Thamarakshan has dubbed "G-Diya" in honour of his younger daughter Diya.

The son of MLA A V Thamarakshan, Ashok Aliseril Thamarakshan, relocated to the UK in 2006 to pursue his master's degree after earning his BTech from Palakkad Engineering College.

The plan was to have a private plane crash while Covid-19 was under lockdown. The family spent Rs 14 million and 1500 hours in 18 months to finish their project, according to a story in The Sun.

In his conversation with The Sun, Ashok discussed his experience and added, "It's much more exciting than getting a new gadget. We started saving money during the first shutdown because we had always wanted our own plane. Since we had been saving a lot of money in the beginning, we decided to try it out."

After receiving my pilot's licence in 2018, I initially used to charter modest two-seater aircraft for excursions, he said, adding that as his family increased, two-seater aircraft became obsolete. Since four-seater planes are uncommon and difficult to find, Thamarakshan came up with the idea of building one himself after realising he would need one if he wanted to take his family with him on his trips.

Three homeless people killed in 'targetted' Canadian mass shooting: Report

A 2-year-old boy's parents have lost their most recent court struggle to save his life support from being switched off. Four months after Archie Battersbee suffered a "catastrophic" brain injury, the UK High Court decided that his medical care could end legally. The Court of Appeal enabled his parents, Hollie Dance and Paul Battersbee, to contest the ruling, but they have now lost the most recent court battle.

The prior judgement of the High Court judge, according to three Court of Appeal judges, was not incorrect. The court was informed that Battersbee was brought to the hospital with what was thought to be a heart attack or stroke shortly prior to the decision being reached.

Archie is reportedly "comatose," according to the evidence that was submitted in court. The attorney for Archie's parents, Devereux QC, countered that Justice Hayden had not accorded Archie's wishes and religious convictions "true or sufficient weight."

Additionally, he said that the judge was mistaken in thinking that receiving life-supporting measures would be difficult and pointless. The court was informed that Dance discovered her unconscious son on April 7 and believed he may have been participating in an online challenge.

Since that time, the 12-year-old has not regained consciousness. His medical team contends that removing life support is in his best interests because they believe he is brainstem-dead.On Monday, the Court of Appeal determined that doctors can legally discontinue giving Archie life-supporting measures.

ZEE MD & CEO, Punit Goenka honoured as GameChanger of the Year at the IAA Leadership Award

Young people in and around the Durgapur area in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal are becoming dependent on flavoured condoms for intoxication rather than using them as a method of contraception. What makes this possible, you ask? Apparently, the students soak the condoms in hot water for a while before using them. They remain "high" from the drink for more than 10 to 12 hours.

In recent days, several areas of the state's Durgapur district have seen a dramatic increase in the sale of flavor-infused condoms, according to a news report by Indian media outlets. The need for certain contraceptives has increased in the following areas: Bidhannagar, Muchipara, Durgapur City Center, and Benachiti.

One Durgapur chemistry teacher adds, "Long-term soaking of condoms in hot water breaks down big organic molecules and produces alcohol compounds. The youth are being kept intoxicated by this substance.

There hasn't yet been a formal declaration from the state police. But according to Dhiman Mandal, Superintendent of the Durgapur Subdistrict Hospital, "the condom contains some sort of fragrant ingredient. By dissolving it, alcohol is created. Youth in this Indian city get intoxicated on ‘flavoured condoms’. But why?

The latest indication that Europe's largest economy is teetering on the verge of recession is the drop in German business confidence to its lowest level in more than two years. According to the carefully studied business confidence index from the Ifo Institute, businesses in Germany have grown more pessimistic about both their current situation and the prospects for the next six months. This month, the index dropped to 88.6, from 92.2 in June, which was the lowest reading since June 2020.

Germany has been severely impacted by rising prices and the Russian gas issue, which poses a wintertime production freeze danger to some of the nation's industrial powerhouses.Due to Germany's reliance on Russian gas, concerns have been raised over whether or not Germans will be able to afford to heat their houses this winter.

The government has declared that in addition to taking steps to enhance gas conservation, it will also need more gas storage. Additionally, it declared that it would support Uniper, an energy supplier, raising the possibility of price increases.

According to experts surveyed by Reuters, German growth of only 0.1% is predicted to be shown in the second quarter's gross domestic product numbers. After contracting by 0.3% in the last three months of 2021, the GDP expanded by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2022.

The Ifo figures were worse than anticipated by Reuters' survey of experts, who predicted an average decline in the index of 90.5 points. According to Clemens Fuest, head of Ifo, "higher energy prices and the danger of a gas shortage are weighing on the economy," and the largest economy in the eurozone was "on the edge" of a recession, which is characterised by two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

Recession in Germany? Business confidence slumps to two-year low

As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern warned, an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Indonesia could cost thousands of New Zealand jobs, as her nation and neighbouring Australia stepped up border biosecurity restrictions.

"While not a threat to humans, it would devastate our national herd. Essentially, all animals that are of cloven hoof are at risk," Ardern told reporters in Wellington.

Ardern warned that the disease, first detected in Indonesia in April, has the potential to threaten up to 100,000 jobs in New Zealand's agriculture sector.

Foot and mouth disease is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock.

It can have a significant economic impact, especially on a country like New Zealand, which exported around 17 million sheep and two million cattle in the eight months up until May 2022.

A foot-and-mouth outbreak has ripped through two Indonesian provinces, killing thousands of cows and infecting hundreds of thousands more.

Ardern said New Zealand has never had an outbreak and wants to keep it that way by tightening border restrictions.

"We want to make sure that we've got all our settings in place to protect ourselves from this emerging threat," she added.

Ardern stated that it is critical to prevent it from entering the country, possibly through Australian tourists who have visited Southeast Asia.

Travellers from Indonesia will not be allowed to bring meat products into New Zealand. Baggage will be screened, and there will be disinfectant mats at airports to clean footwear.

In Australia, parcels and baggage from China and Indonesia are now being checked, and there are also foot mats at airports in response to the disease.

Canberra has so far rejected opposition calls to close the border to Indonesia completely, but further measures have not been ruled out.

Ardern said her government is working with Australian authorities to try to further reduce the risk.

New Zealand is set to fully open its borders at midnight on Sunday to all visitors.

New Zealand's Biosecurity Minister Damien O'Connor said "vigilance is absolutely crucial" as the disease could also affect up to 77 percent of the country's wildlife population, including wild deer, pigs and sheep.

He referred to how foot and mouth devastated British farming in 2001 when millions of cattle and sheep had to be slaughtered.

Indonesia foot and mouth outbreak prompts New Zealand, Australia restrictions

Thousands of Indigenous persons are expected to converge Monday on the small Alberta prairie community of Maskwacis to hear a long-awaited apology from Pope Francis for generations of abuse and cultural suppression at Catholic residential schools across Canada.

Francis is scheduled to arrive in mid-morning at the site of the former Ermineskin Indian Residential School, now largely torn down. He will pause at the sites of the former school and nearby cemetery before speaking in a large open area to school survivors, their relatives and other supporters.

Francis arrived Sunday in Edmonton, where he was greeted by representatives of Canada's three main Indigenous groups—First Nations, Metis, and Inuit—along with political and church dignitaries. The pope spent the rest of the day resting at a seminary in the provincial capital.

The Canadian government has admitted that physical and sexual abuse were rampant in the state-funded Christian schools that operated from the 19th century to the 1970s. Some 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend in an effort to isolate them from the influence of their homes, Native languages, and cultures and assimilate them into Canada’s Christian society.

Francis’ six-day trip — which will also include other sites in Alberta, Quebec City and Iqaluit, Nunavut, in the far north — follows meetings he held in the spring at the Vatican with delegations from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit. Those meetings culminated with a historic April 1 apology for the "deplorable" abuses committed by some Catholic missionaries in residential schools.

Thousands of children died from disease, fire and other causes. The discoveries of hundreds of potential burial sites at former schools in the past year has drawn international attention to the legacy of the schools in Canada and their counterparts in the United States.

Francis is now following through on a commitment to make that apology on Canadian soil.

Maskwacis, about an hour south of Edmonton, is the hub of four Cree nations.

Event organisers said they would do everything possible to make sure survivors could attend the event. Many will travel from park-and-ride lots, and organisers acknowledge that many survivors are elderly and will require accessible vehicles, diabetic-friendly snacks, and other amenities.

The Catholics operated a majority of the Canadian schools, while various Protestant denominations operated others in cooperation with the government.

The Prime Minister, who last year voiced an apology for the "incredibly harmful government policy" in organising the residential school system, will also attend the Maskwacis event along with other government officials.

In Maskwacis, the former school where Francis is visiting has been replaced with a school system operated by the four local Cree nations. The curriculum affirms the Indigenous culture that was once suppressed.

Chief Greg Desjarlais of the Frog Lake First Nation in northern Alberta, a school survivor, said after the pope's arrival Sunday that there are "mixed emotions across this country" over his visit.

"I think today of the young people that didn’t make it home and are buried around residential schools," he told a news conference after the airport welcome ceremony. But he expressed optimism that the visit can begin to bring reconciliation.

"I do know when two people have apologized we feel better," he said. "But our people have been through a lot. ... Our people have been traumatized. Some of them didn’t make it home. Now I hope the world will see why our people are so hurt."

On Monday afternoon, Francis is scheduled to visit Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples, a Catholic parish in Edmonton oriented toward Indigenous people and culture. The church, whose sanctuary was dedicated last week after being restored from a fire, incorporates Indigenous language and customs in liturgy.

"I never in my life thought I would see a pope here at Sacred Heart Church," said Fernie Marty, who holds the title of church elder. "And now we get that opportunity."

When Francis visits, the church will display the clothing, bread and other supplies it regularly provides to the needy, including many of Edmonton’s estimated urban Indigenous population of 75,000.

The visit will be an "encounter" that will help "for people to know what we are, who we are," said its pastor, the Rev. Jesu Susai.

Pope set for historic apology for school abuses in Canada

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the premier investigating agency in India, arrested four individuals after they allegedly tried to cheat people out of Rs 1 billion by making false promises of governorship and Rajya Sabha seats. According to reports, the agency recently carried out searches related to the investigation that led to the arrest of four members of the gang.

One of the suspects fled during the search, according to the officials, after assaulting CBI officers. They claim that he is the subject of a second FIR for assaulting agency representatives at the local police station. The CBI has reportedly named several people in connection with the inquiry, including Mahendra Pal Arora, Abhishek Boora, and Mohammed Aijaz Khan of Delhi-NCR, Ravindra Vithal Naik of Belgaum, Karnataka, and Kamalakar Premkumar Bandgar of Latur, Maharashtra.

Bandgar is alleged to have asked Boora, Arora, Khan, and Naik to fix any jobs that needed fixing in exchange for payment of a sizeable illegal gratuity while posing as a senior CBI officer and showcasing his "connections" with powerful people.

The FIR claimed that they acted in concert "with the single ulterior motive of defrauding private persons by falsely assuring them of seats in Rajya Sabha, appointment as governor, appointment as chairman in different government-run organisations under central government ministries and departments," among other positions, for large monetary consideration.

Through its source, the agency learned that Boora and Bandgar discussed ways to exploit the latter's supposed connections to influential people who are said to play "pivotal roles" in appointment choices.

The accused allegedly tried to deceive people by falsely offering them a seat in the Rajya Sabha in exchange for a sizeable sum of money exceeding Rs 1 billion, according to the FIR.

Rs 1 billion for Rajya Sabha seat: CBI busts racket falsely promising governorship, RS seats

Droupadi Murmu, the 15th president of India, addressed the nation after taking the oath of office and noted that she was the first president to be born in independent India and that it was an honour for her to lead the nation as it celebrated 75 years of independence.

Inaugural tribal and second woman to hold the nation's highest constitutional office, Murmu stated in her first address to the nation that attaining the position is not just her own accomplishment but also a reflection of the confidence of crores of Indians.

"Johar! Namaskar! I humbly greet all my fellow citizens from this sacred Parliament, a symbol of the hopes, aspirations and rights of all the citizens of India. Your affection, trust and support will be my greatest strength in discharging my functions and responsibilities," she said.

As it happened: Droupadi Murmu took the oath as president of India

"I express my heartfelt gratitude to all the MPs and all the members of the Legislative Assembly for being elected to the highest constitutional post of India. Your vote is an expression of the faith of crores of citizens of the country," Murmu said.

"Reaching the post of President is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India," Murmu stated in her address.

"It is the power of our democracy that a daughter born in a poor house, a daughter born in a remote tribal area, can reach the highest constitutional post of India," she added.

Today, in the Central Hall of Parliament, Chief Justice of India NV Ramanna administered the oath of office to the 64-year-old former governor of Jharkhand. She succeeds Ram Nath Kovind, whose five-year tenure ended on July 24. She added that the nation must work faster to live up to the expectations our freedom heroes had for the people of independent India. At a critical juncture, when India is commemorating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, according to Murmu, the nation elected her president.

"A few days from today, the country will complete 75 years of its independence. It is also a coincidence that my political career started when the country was celebrating its 50th year of independence, and today, in the 75th year of independence, I have got this new responsibility. It is my great privilege to be given this responsibility at a historic time when India is gearing up to achieve the vision of the next 25 years," said the President.

She further said, "I am the first President of the country who was born in independent India. We have to work at a fast pace in this Amritkal to fulfil the expectations that our freedom fighters had from us citizens of independent India. In these 25 years, the path to the accomplishment of Amritkal will proceed on two tracks - everyone's effort and everyone's duty."

She made a point of highlighting her path from a small village to the top position in the nation, saying, "I started my life journey from a small tribal village in Odisha. From the background I come from, it was like a dream for me to get elementary education. But despite many obstacles, my resolve remained strong and I became the first daughter of my village to go to college. I belong to the tribal society, and I have got the opportunity to become the President of India starting from a municipal ward councilor. This is the greatness of India, the mother of democracy."

She continued by saying that the ability of a daughter born into poverty or a daughter born into a remote tribal location to ascend to the highest constitutional position in India is a testament to the strength of our democracy.

"Reaching the post of President is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India. My election is proof that the poor in India can dream and make them come true. It is a matter of great satisfaction for me that those who have been deprived for centuries, who have been away from the benefits of development, those poor, downtrodden, backward and tribals are seeing their reflection in me," she said.

My election proves that in India, the poor can dream and achieve too: President Droupadi Murmu

The monkeypox outbreak, which has afflicted nearly 16,000 individuals in 72 countries, was deemed a global health emergency by the World Health Organization on Saturday. This is the highest alarm it can issue.

Monkeypox is an uncommon disease caused by a monkeypox virus infection. Monkeypox virus is a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. Variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus are all members of the Orthopoxvirus genus.

Monkeypox was initially found in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease in groups of monkeys utilised for the study occurred.

The monkeypox virus is no longer transmitted by monkeys, despite its name.

Monkeypox is thought to be spread by small rodents and squirrels in Africa's rainforests, though additional research is needed.

More information on the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and dissemination of monkeypox can be found here.

Types of Monkeypox Virus

The monkeypox virus is divided into two types: central African and west African.

The central African monkeypox virus is more likely to cause serious illnesses and death than the west African monkeypox virus.

Symptoms and Signs of Monkeypox

The symptoms of monkeypox are similar to those of smallpox, however, they are usually milder.

Monkeypox symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle discomfort, and weariness.

Lymph nodes swollen

After one to three days, a rash would appear. The rash usually begins on the face and extends to other regions of your body, such as the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. The rash begins as flat, red pimples that eventually evolve into blisters that fill with pus.

After several days, the blisters may crust over and fall off.

Spread of Monkeypox

Monkeypox can spread for a variety of causes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

When a person comes into contact with an infected animal or human, monkeypox is disseminated. Animal-to-human transmission occurs when an infected animal's blood, body fluids, or pox lesions come into contact with broken skin, such as bites or scratches.

Monkeypox can also pass from person to person, but this is uncommon. When you come into contact with virus particles from an infected person, this is known as person-to-person transmission. Coughing, sneezing, and airborne droplets can all spread the infection. You can potentially become infected by touching an infected person's sores.

Treatment

Although there are no specific therapies for monkeypox infection at present time, outbreaks can be controlled.

A monkeypox outbreak can be controlled with the smallpox vaccine, cidofovir, ST-246, and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG).

The best available information about the benefits and dangers of smallpox vaccination and medicine used for the prevention and management of monkeypox and other orthopoxvirus infections was used to establish CDC guidance.
