"I am in favour of the creation of a free and sovereign Palestinian state," Lula said.

"It is a genocide. Thousands of children are dead and thousands are missing. Soldiers are not dying. Women and children are dying at the hospital," he said. "If that's not genocide, I don't know what genocide is," he added.

The Brazilian president's remarks come amid a diplomatic row between the South American nation and Israel after Lula controversially compared its campaign in Gaza to the Holocaust.

Drawing a comparison between Israeli military actions and Adolf Hitler's campaign to exterminate the Jewish people, Lula on Sunday (Feb 18) said "What's happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people hasn't happened at any other moment in history. Actually, it has happened: when Hitler decided to kill the Jews."

Following this, the Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Monday (Feb 19) declared that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is unwelcome in Israel until he retracts his remarks.

Labelling the comments as a "serious antisemitic attack" he said that the Brazilian leader is "persona non grata" until he takes back the remark.&nbsp;

"We will not forget nor forgive. It is a serious antisemitic attack. In my name and the name of the citizens of Israel - tell President Lula that he is persona non grata in Israel until he takes it back."

Reacting to Lula's remarks, Netanyahu deemed them as "shameful and grave", and said that his government had called in Brazil's ambassador in protest.

In a statement, he said that the Brazilian President's comments were "a trivialisation of the Holocaust and an attempt to attack the Jewish people and the right of Israel to self-defence. Drawing comparisons between Israel and the Nazis and Hitler is to cross a red line".

"Israel is fighting to defend itself and ensure its future until total victory, and it is doing that while upholding international law," he added.

A farm tractor pulling a wagon loaded with devotees overturned and fell into a pond in northern India's Uttar Pradesh on Saturday (Feb 24), killing at least 24&nbsp;people, including seven children, officials said.

The wagon was carrying around 40 devotees on the way to take a ritual bath in the River Ganga when it veered off the road in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh state, police said.

Over a dozen others were injured, some seriously.

The accident occurred on Patiali Dariyavganj road in Kasganj on Saturday at around 10 am.

Locals immediately rushed to the spot to rescue the passengers, however, CMO Rajiv Aggarwal said that the accident killed at least 15 people.

Both DA and DR witness a hike twice a year, i.e. in January as well as in July.

The DA was raised by 4% to 46% in October 2023 during the most recent increment. The next DA hike is anticipated to be 4% given the current rate of inflation.

As per the official data, there are 69.76 lakh pensioners and 47.58 lakh central government employees.

After the upcoming DA hike, both employees and pensioners will be benefitted.

Colombia's government on Friday (Feb 23) announced that it would launch an underwater exploration effort in order to investigate and recover artefacts that were discovered on a Spanish galleon that sank in the Colombian Caribbean over 300 years ago.

The officials said that for the exploration mission, they would use an underwater robot guided by the multi-purpose vessel that would gather information about the sunken ship.

The robot would extract items from the outside of the galleon so as to see "how they materialize when they come out (of the water) and to understand what we can do" to recover the rest of the treasures, said Culture Minister Juan David Correa.

The ship called San Jose, which historians believe carried one of the largest unsalvaged maritime treasures, sank in the year 1708 near the historical Caribbean port of Cartagena. The wreckage of the sunken ship was located in 2015.

Colombia is set to invest about $4.5 million in the scientific mission which is set to begin in the second half of 2024.

So far, sonar pictures have revealed weaponry, ceramics, artefacts, and bronze cannons specifically designed for the ship.

The Columbian government on Friday (Feb 23) also said that it had legally started arbitration proceedings with the US company Sea Search Armada, LLC over the patrimonial rights of the ship.

The firm is claiming $10 billion, corresponding to what it alleges is worth 50 per cent of the ship's treasure&nbsp;discovered in 1982.

Correa said that the scientific mission will enable them to perform inter-institutional work that will help train new generations in the social appropriation of knowledge through scientific research. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"We want to tell the world that this government means to leave behind a legacy for Colombian children and young people to do research in underwater heritage, a science or an area of knowledge that has not been specifically developed around the world," Correa said.

On Friday the officer turned himself in to Bondi Police Station, near the country's famed beach.

Footage of the arrest shows him handcuffed and escorted into the building wearing a dark baseball cap and sneakers.&nbsp;

The scientists, examined the larynxes of three stranded baleen whales -- the sei, minke, and humpback species and with the help of modelling techniques and scanning, reconstructed how the whale vocalisations occur.

They discovered that baleen whale sound&nbsp;can travel long distances through water, but at a maximum depth of 100 metres (330 feet) and at a frequency of up to 300 Hz, which is within the range of noise produced by shipping vessels.

"It's really sad that baleen whale vocalisations exactly overlap with the sounds we make, predominantly with shipping noise, and there is no way for the whales to sing louder, at a higher frequency, or deeper in the water," Elemans said.&nbsp;

"These animals really can't escape this, and we really need to mitigate the noise we make."&nbsp;

The scientists said that the noise pollution can push the whales to alter their behaviour.

They will either try to remain silent until there's no more noise or will move to a different location. This will require them to exert extra energy which can further weaken their body condition and affect their long-term survival.

Whales are struggling to communicate due to human noise pollution, says study

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Shiv Sena&nbsp;leader Manohar Joshi passed away at the age of 86 at around 3 am on Friday (Feb 23) due to age-related health complications.

He was admitted to the ICU of PD Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The hospital had released a statement saying that Joshi was in the Intensive Care Unit, under close observation.

"Mr Manohar Joshi, Ex-Chief Minister of Maharashtra, was admitted at P.D. Hinduja Hospital on 21st February 2024. He suffered a cardiac event and is severely ill," said the statement issued by Hinduja Hospital.

The Shiv Sena stalwart was admitted to the same hospital in May 2023 after he suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Joshi served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from the year 1995 to 1999 and was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004.&nbsp;

He was also a Member of Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012, and Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2002.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was pained by the veteran leader's demise.

After the war comes to an end, Gaza's civil affairs would be run by "local officials with administrative experience" who are "not linked to countries or entities that support terrorism", the Times of Israel newspaper reported citing key elements of Netanyahu's plan.

Amid the ongoing protests by the farmers, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, on Thursday (Feb 22), said that the protesting farmers led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will observe&nbsp;'Black Friday' on Feb 23&nbsp;after one of the protesting farmers died at the Khanauri Border crossing in Sangrur district, Punjab.

"We will observe a 'Black Friday' tomorrow condoling the death of a farmer at the Khanauri Border crossing in Punjab. We held a tractor march yesterday as well," Tikait told news agency ANI.

The BKU leader further said that&nbsp;the farmers protesting to push the Centre for their demands will hold a tractor march on Feb 26.

"On February 26, we will take tractors to the highway, and towards the way that goes to Delhi. It will be a one-day programme, and then we will return. Then, all across India, our meetings will go on. On March 14, there will be a programme at Ram Leela Ground in Delhi for one day. People will go without tractors to that event. The government keeps saying that they are not stopping us so let's see if they will stop us or not," he added.

"SKM squarely blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for conspiring to carry out severe repression on the protesters to isolate and divide the Kisan movement, develop alienation among the people of Punjab and try to take electoral advantage of this division," it added.

"SKM while demanding the resignation of Amit Shah and CM and HM of Haryana, ML Khattar and Anil Vij, demanded that the Punjab govt should lodge an FIR under section 302 against them and the police for the murder and injury to the protesters and damage to several tractors at the protest site," said the statement.

If public property is damaged by the agitators during the movement, there is an amendment in the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act 1984 (PDPP Act) under the provisions of the Supreme Court in which, the people who caused damage to public property during the movement or called for the movement and the officials of that organization are held responsible for any damage caused," the official release said.

"In this regard, the actions taken by the administration against the agitators leaders are being implemented. If there has been any damage to any community's property during this movement, the details of the damage can be given to the administration. Proceedings to compensate for the loss of government property during the farmers' protest, attachment of property and seizure of bank accounts of the protestors have been initiated," it added.

The police have also initiated the National Security Act (NSA) against the farmer leaders.

"Proceedings have been initiated under the NSA National Security Act 1980/NSA against the chief officials of farmer organizations and the agitators," the Ambala police said on X.

"The GB paid homage to martyr Shubh Karan Singh who died in police firing yesterday when the Haryana police crossed the border illegally and shot at the protesters. The police also damaged several tractors of farmers at the protest site," it said. "SKM squarely blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for conspiring to carry out severe repression on the protesters to isolate and divide the Kisan movement, develop alienation among the people of Punjab and try to take electoral advantage of this division," it added. "SKM while demanding the resignation of Amit Shah and CM and HM of Haryana, ML Khattar and Anil Vij, demanded that the Punjab govt should lodge an FIR under section 302 against them and the police for the murder and injury to the protesters and damage to several tractors at the protest site," said the statement. Protestors to cover the cost of any damage caused to public property: Ambala Police Meanwhile, the Haryana Police in the Ambala District has stated that any damage caused to private or public property during the protest will be made up for by seizing the demonstrators' bank accounts and attaching their belongings. The Ambala Police released an official press statement saying that the farmer organisations have been making continuous efforts since Feb 13 to break the barricade placed on the Shambhu Border and daily attempts to undermine law and order are being made by the demonstrators by pelting stones at the police administration and causing disturbances. "The damage caused to government and private property by the agitators is being assessed. The administration had already informed/warned in this regard that if the agitators caused damage to government and private property during this movement, then this loss would be compensated by seizing their property and bank accounts. If public property is damaged by the agitators during the movement, there is an amendment in the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act 1984 (PDPP Act) under the provisions of the Supreme Court in which, the people who caused damage to public property during the movement or called for the movement and the officials of that organization are held responsible for any damage caused," the official release said. "In this regard, the actions taken by the administration against the agitators leaders are being implemented. If there has been any damage to any community's property during this movement, the details of the damage can be given to the administration. Proceedings to compensate for the loss of government property during the farmers' protest, attachment of property and seizure of bank accounts of the protestors have been initiated," it added. The police have also initiated the National Security Act (NSA) against the farmer leaders. "Proceedings have been initiated under the NSA National Security Act 1980/NSA against the chief officials of farmer organizations and the agitators," the Ambala police said on X. Zeeshan Siddiqui, who was removed from his position as the President of the Mumbai Youth Congress, on Thursday (Feb 22) made a shocking claim stating that he was asked to reduce weight by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's close aide to be granted an audience with the party scion.

Siddique said that during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra (Unite India Justice March) in Maharashtra's Nanded, one of the persons close to Gandhi told him to shed 10 kgs and only then they would let him meet the Congress leader.

"Mallikarjun Kharge is such a senior leader but even his hands are tied...Rahul Gandhi is doing his work, but it looks like his team has taken 'supari' from other parties to finish Congress. The 31-year-old also denounced the alleged mistreatment of minority leaders within Congress, accusing the party of communalism.

"The treatment being meted out to minority leaders and workers in the Congress is unfortunate. The extent of communalism in the Congress and Mumbai Youth Congress is unlike anywhere else. Is it a sin to be a Muslim in the Congress? The party has to answer why am I being targeted? Is it only because I am a Muslim?" he stated.

Zeeshan Siddique is Baba Siddique's son who had earlier this month announced his decision to leave the Congress party.
