Biden says he saw evidence of Hamas 'beheading' Israeli children; White House clarifies

An Israeli-American teenager managed to survive a harrowing attack on his family's home by Hamas militants after his parents shielded him from gunfire with their bodies and died in the process.

The Mathias family resided on a kibbutz in southern Israel near the Gaza border and had only a brief moment to seek shelter after being alerted to the impending attack, Associated Press reported.

As the chaos ensued on Saturday (Oct 7), the family (16-year-old Rotem and his parents Shlomi Mathias and Debbie Mathias) huddled in a bomb shelter in their home, a small room designed to protect against rocket attacks.

Shlomi Mathias, the father, had his arm severed while trying to fend off the attackers.

What is Jericho missile system? Israel's potential 'doomsday' nuclear option

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Iran's President, Ebrahim Raisi, held their first phone call since the landmark restoration of ties between the Sunni and Shia powerhouses of West Asia in March.

The two leaders reportedly discussed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and delved upon prevailing situation in Gaza following massive retaliation by Israel.

The Saudi Crown Prince also spoke by phone on Wednesday (Oct 11) with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during which the 38-year-old he was "exerting unremitting efforts through regional and international communication to achieve coordination that pushes for a halt of the current escalation".

Iran-backed Hamas militant group launched a sudden attack on Israel last weekend which so far has claimed nearly 1,200 lives in Israel while more than 1,100 are reported to have been killed in Gaza.

Concerns have grown regarding the fate of over 150 hostages, mainly Israelis, along with foreign and dual nationals, held by Hamas in Gaza. But in the first sign of ease of the hostage crisis, Hamas on October 11 said it had released an Israeli mother and two children who were held as captives by the militant groups.

The ongoing war has put pressure on the potential normalisation deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which has been driven by the US President Joe Biden's administration.

Hostage crisis in spotlight Concerns have grown regarding the fate of over 150 hostages, mainly Israelis, along with foreign and dual nationals, held by Hamas in Gaza. Israel vs Hamas: Iran's President Raisi dials Saudi Crown Prince to address the crisis

Meet Israel's Super-Spy Who Outfoxed West Asia

Eli Cohen, born Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen, was an Egyptian-born Israeli spy.

Subject of the Netflix series, The Spy, Cohen lived as Kamel Amin Thaabet in Syria in the early 1960s

Cohen built intimate friendships with Syrian politicians, military officials and West Asia's community of diplomats.

Before being deployed in Syria, Cohen smuggled Egyptian Jews into Israel amid increasing persecution of the community in Egypt during the early 1950s.

Eli Cohen joined Israel Defense Forces in 1957, and in later years worked for military counter-intelligence Mossad.

Cohen moved to Syria's capital Damascus in February 1962 and took the alias Kamel Amin Thaabet.

Cohen held parties at his Damascus residence, attended by Syrian military officials and businessmen who openly discussed their work and army plans.

Cohen used his ties with Syrian military to visit Golan Heights area bordering Israel. He collected information of Syrian fortifications and marked them by enabling plantation of trees, so that Israelis could know precise location of Syrian's strength.

Cohen's intelligence collection from Golan Heights enabled Israel to capture the strategically significant area during the Six-days war in 1967.

Cohen's activities were intercepted by the Syrian side in January 1965. He was hanged at a public square in Damascus in May 1965.

A national hero in Israel, Cohen was survived by wife Nadia and three children. His body was never returned to Israel
