Rio Tinto detonated the aboriginal site in order to gain access to USD 135 million of high grade Iron ore.&nbsp;

This drew international condemnation and damaged the miner's reputation for dealing with indigenous groups in its worldwide operations.

"What happened at Juukan was wrong and we are determined to ensure that the destruction of a heritage site of such exceptional archaeological and cultural significance never occurs again at a Rio Tinto operation," Rio chairman Simon Thompson said on Friday.

The traditional owners of the land, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) people said they had no comment on the executive changes, but would continue to work with Rio Tinto.

"We cannot and will not allow this type of devastation to occur ever again," the PKKP said in a statement.

Rio said a search was already underway to replace Jacques. The board praised his leadership and pointed to his sale of the group's coal assets, development of a climate change strategy and strong shareholder returns under his tenure.

Rio shares drifted down 0.7 percent in Australian trade, in line with a softer broader market.

The controversy, meanwhile, has spilled over to the rest of the sector, with BHP Group and Fortescue Metals Group both pledging to review mine plans that could threaten sacred sites as they step up talks with traditional owners.

The White House decision to remove the flag has also angered war veterans groups.

The American Ex-Prisoners of War group, which represents 10,000 former POWs and their families, said it was outraged last month when it learned of the move, calling it a "slap in the face."

"While he touts his support for the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, actions speak louder than words. And this action speaks of disdain for Prisoners of War and the Missing in Action," the group said.

US law requires the flag to be displayed in a "manner designed to ensure visibility to the public." In its current position, it can be viewed from limited vantage points outside the White House complex.

Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) has issued a show-cause notice to Serum Institute, the world's third largest vaccine manufacturer over safety issues in COVID-19 vaccine trials. DGCI has asked Serum Institute why trials of Covishield were not stopped in India even when the same vaccine-candidate caused illness in one of the participants of the trials.

Oxford University Covid-19 vaccine trials in India to continue despite 'pause' in UK: Serum Institute

Delhi State Government on Wednesday passed an order that made doctor's prescription for coronavirus test unnecessary. As per the order, anyone can get himself or herseld tested for an infection of coronavirus.

"...it has been decided that hecneforth there will be no requirement of a prescription from a qualified medical practitioner for Covid-19 testing in NCT of Delhi..." said the official order.

However, the order added that the tests will be carried out in accordance with the strategy/advisory issued by Indian Council of Medical Research.

Doctor's prescription not needed for Covid-19 test in Delhi from now

The foreign ministers of Russia, India and China (RIC) would hold a luncheon meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Moscow, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is in Moscow on a four-day visit to attend the meeting of foreign ministers of the SCO of which both India and China are members. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is the host of the meeting of SCO foreign ministers being held in the Russian capital from Wednesday to Thursday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will also hold bilateral meetings with relevant member states of the SCO and attend a luncheon for the RIC foreign ministers, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing here.

The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the Presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

India and Pakistan were admitted as observers of the grouping in 2005. Both the countries were admitted as full members of the bloc in 2017.

A special NIA court here has sentenced four militants of the banned Jamat-ul-Mujaheedin of Bangladesh (JMB) terror group to seven years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each for their involvement in the Burdwan blast case of 2014.

Ziaul Hoque, Motiur Rahaman, Mohammad Yusuf and Jahirul Sheikh have been jailed for seven years and fined Rs 5,000 by the court which delivered the judgement on Tuesday, an NIA spokesperson said.

On October 2, 2014, a powerful blast caused by an improvised explosive devise (IED) took place at the first floor of a rented house in the busy Khagragarh locality of West Bengal's Burdwan.

The IED had accidentally gone off at the time of its fabrication by members of the Bangladesh-based banned terrorist organisation JMB.

The rented house was occupied by JMB members for the nefarious activity of bomb making, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) official said.

Two terrorists had succumbed to their injuries caused due to the bomb blast and another survived with grievous injuries.

The case was initially registered by the West Bengal police and was subsequently taken over by the NIA on October 10, 2014.

The JMB conspired to radicalise, recruit and provide training in arms and explosives to its members in India as well as to commit terrorist acts and wage a war against the democratically-established governments of India and Bangladesh, the official said.

A large number of IEDs, explosives, hand grenades, training videos were recovered during the investigation of the case.

A total of 33 accused were charge-sheeted for various offences in this case, out of which 31 were arrested.

Earlier on August 30 last year, as many as 19 accused and on January 15 last year five accused were convicted and sentenced for various terms by the NIA special court.

The trial against the remaining three arrested and two absconding charge sheeted accused will continue.

The document issued by Directorate of Intelligence of Pakistan government has a mention that Syed Salahuddin, chief of terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen indeed works for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). ISI has been found by Indian intelligence agencies to be facilitating terror activities.

Nepal reported 980 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the nationwide infection tally to 46,257, the health ministry said on Sunday.

Nine more people died due to COVID-19 related complications on Sunday, taking the death toll to 289, it said. 
Of the 980 new cases, 290 are females and 690 males, health ministry spokesperson Jageshwar Gautam said.

As many as 354 new cases were reported from Kathmandu Valley in a single day, he said.

Nepal's coronavirus tally now stands at 46,257, Gautam said, adding that 28,941 patients have recovered so far.

While 17,027 patients are currently undergoing treatment at various isolation centres in Nepal, some 4,703 others are staying at various quarantine facilities, he said.
