Most of the victims suffered from 60 to 70 per cent burns, and the health condition of 25 others is also critical.Fire officials suspected a gas leak when worshippers were about to leave the mosque after their Isha (night) prayers at around 9 pm (local time) on Friday.&nbsp;

NSA Robert O'Brien on Saturday said that he was continuously monitoring the situation to detect any attempts by other countries to influence US Elections 2020.

U.S. job growth likely slowed further in August as financial assistance from the government ran out, threatening the economy`s recovery from the COVID-19 recession.

The Labor Department`s closely watched employment report on Friday would come as companies from transportation to manufacturing industries announce layoffs or furloughs. It could add pressure on the White House and Congress to restart stalled negotiations for another fiscal package, and will likely become political ammunition for both Democrats and Republicans with just two months to go until the presidential election.

Programs to help businesses pay wages have either lapsed or are on the verge of ending. A $600 weekly unemployment supplement expired in July. Economists credited government largesse for the sharp rebound in economic activity after it nearly ground to a halt following the shuttering of businesses in mid-March to control the spread of the coronavirus.

"The pandemic has really torn our economic and social fabric," said Sung Won Sohn, a finance and economics professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. "The ending of the fiscal stimulus has not helped the situation."

According to a Reuters survey of economists nonfarm payrolls likely rose by 1.4 million jobs last month, with some of the anticipated gains coming from hiring for the 2020 Census. Employment increased 1.763 million in July and its growth peaked at 4.791 million in June.

Friday`s report is one of just two monthly labor market scorecards left on the calendar before the Nov. 3 presidential election.

President Donald Trump, who is trailing in polls behind former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic Party nominee, is likely to tout the continued job gains as a sign that the economy is improving after suffering its biggest shock in at least 73 years in the second quarter.

But employment would still be about 11.5 million below its pre-pandemic level. Most of the job gains have been workers being recalled from furloughs or temporary layoffs. Though new COVID-19 infections have subsided after a broad resurgence through the summer, many hot spots remain.

United Airlines said on Wednesday it was preparing to furlough 16,370 workers on Oct. 1. American Airlines has announced its workforce would shrink by 40,000, including 19,000 involuntary cuts. Ford Motor Co said it was targeting 1,400 U.S. salaried jobs for elimination by year end. Mass transit rail operators are also eying furloughs.

A report this week from the Federal Reserve based on information collected from the U.S. central bank`s contacts on or before Aug. 24 showed an increase in employment.&nbsp;

The Fed, however, noted that "some districts also reported slowing job growth and increased hiring volatility, particularly in service industries, with rising instances of furloughed workers being laid off permanently as demand remained soft."

"Restaurants and other businesses in the services industry are not going to continue calling workers back when demand is not there," said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody`s Analytics in Westchester, Pennsylvania. "We need the stimulus like weeks ago."

SPENDING IN JEOPARDY

The unemployment rate is forecast to have dropped to 9.8% in August from 10.2% in July, according to the Reuters survey. That would leave it just under the 10% peak shortly after the end of the 2007-09 Great Recession.

But the measurement of the jobless rate has been biased downward by people misclassifying themselves as being&nbsp; 
"employed but absent from work." At least 29.2 million were receiving unemployment benefits in mid-August. 
Lydia Boussour, a senior economist with Oxford Economics in New York, estimated that payroll gains in line with expectations would leave one out of two laid-off workers still unemployed, with an increased risk of a prolonged high unemployment spell.

"The fact that the employment is settling into a trend of slow, grinding improvement is a worrisome sign for the broader recovery," said Boussour. "The combination of slow employment progress and poor health conditions along with the absence of fiscal aid risk jeopardizing the consumer spending rebound in the coming months."

Slowing job growth will likely have a limited impact on gross domestic product in the third quarter, which economists estimate could rebound at an annualized rate of as high as 30% after sinking at a historic 31.7% pace in the April-June quarter. But it will hurt fourth quarter GDP, with consumer spending taking a hit.

Though wages surged at the depth of the pandemic, that was because the job losses were concentrated in the low wage services industries like restaurants and bars.

Average hourly earnings are forecast unchanged in August after rising 0.2% in July. That would lower the annual increase in wage to 4.5% from 4.8% in July.

The service sector is likely to account for most the anticipated gains in August. Manufacturing is expected to have added another 50,000 jobs. Government payrolls were likely boosted by the hiring of at least 250,000 workers for the population count, though some it could be offset a decline in education employment at states and local governments.

"We look for education-related employment to be particularly weak as the back-to-school season will be abnormal in many areas," said Daniel Silver, economist at JPMorgan in New York.

Near-record violence in Afghanistan in the last few weeks creates an atmosphere of mistrust and risks derailing the peace negotiations set to begin soon between the Afghan government and the Taliban, according to a top UN official in the war-ravaged country.

The planned negotiations stem from a landmark pact the US signed with the Taliban in February to promote a peaceful settlement to the Afghan war, the longest overseas military intervention by the American military.

"As I speak, Afghans representing the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan are preparing to sit with other Afghans representing the Taliban to discuss, at long last, a political settlement to the conflict. This is truly a historic moment," Deborah Lyons, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, said in a briefing to the UN Security Council on Thursday.

"After four decades of war, the people of Afghanistan have more reason than ever to hope that this devastating conflict, which has brought so much suffering, may finally come to an end,? Lyons, also the Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), said.

She, however, warned that this will be a long and challenging process and already, the pre-talks phase has raised difficult issues related to prisoner releases, which have taken five months to resolve.

Eventually the negotiations will have to tackle a range of profound questions about the kind of country Afghans want. These can only be addressed by Afghans talking with other Afghans. Solutions will not be found on the battlefield, we know this, nor can they be imposed from the outside,? she said.

Lyons cautioned that despite the air of cautious optimism, the level of violence on the battlefield remains deeply worrying and the last few weeks have seen near-record numbers of security incidents, including egregious attacks by spoilers targeting civilians involved in the peace process.

"We must keep in mind the terrible consequences of this violence. The conflict continues to kill and injure hundreds of Afghans every week.And as we look towards the peace talks this violence also creates an atmosphere of mistrust that risks derailing negotiations," she said.

With the negotiations, hosted by Qatar, set to launch soon, she exhorted parties to place a humanitarian ceasefire atop the agenda, and pressed all countries to amplify this call.

"The coming days will hopefully bring the formal launch of intra-Afghan negotiations. I said the coming days, not the coming weeks," she said thanking member states, including Qatar and the United States as well as many others who have engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts to get us to this point.

For our part, the UN will be working with international partners to support both parties and the host countries throughout the process.

She added that a peace process, and even a peace agreement, does not peace make.

All of us must do our part to create a conducive environment for peace talks. In parallel, we must ensure that the ground is prepared for peace to flourish once an agreement is reached, she said.

"Women's rights are also emerging as among the most difficult issues confronting the parties as they enter negotiations and one around which any compromises will pose a difficult dilemma for member states," she said.

This issue will be more central in the Afghan peace process than we have ever seen in any other peace negotiation in recent memory, she added.

Lyons said she has initiated a series of meetings with a countrywide network of Afghan women on the peace process, which is giving the UN important insights into their concerns, as well as possible avenues for greater engagement.

But we all know that it is women's representation at the peace table that offers the best opportunity to ensure that their own rights are upheld, and that their vision for elements of a peaceful Afghanistan is reflected in all aspects of the talks, she said.

Lyons commended the women members of the Afghan negotiating team and other peace structures for their energetic outreach and substantive preparations for intra-Afghan talks.

"As of this moment, we are not yet aware of any women's representation on the Taliban side, but we remain hopeful that they, too, will find a way of meaningfully including women, the other 50 per cent of the population, in their negotiation team," she said.

Bangladesh Government is likely to extend suspension of the prison term of former premier Khaleda Zia by another six months. Family of Khaleda Zia, who is now the main opposition leader in the country, requested suspension of prison term for her medical treatment.&nbsp;

Khaleda Zia has been serving 17-year term but has been out of the jail for last six months. The six-month suspension currently in effect will end on September 24.

Zia's family had filed a plea with the government on August 25 for further suspension of the prison sentence.

Bangladesh law ministry spokesman told PTI that it had cleared the fresh proposal.

The official added that the fresh proposal had come from the home ministry and that it would now be forwarded to Bangladesh Primie Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Zia served thrice as the premier since 1991. Her party was routed in the 2018 election, bagging only six seats in 300-seat Parliament.

Her conviction on "moral turpitude" charges barred her from contesting the polls.

She was sent to jail in February 2018 by a local court on charges of embezzling foreign donations meant for an orphanage, named after her slain husband and president Ziaur Rehman, during her premiership between 2001 and 2006.

Rehman, a military ruler-turned-politician, was the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

She was convicted in another corruption case later the same year, though her party claims both cases are politically motivated.

Bangladesh likely to further extend suspension of Khaleda Zia's prison term

Brazil’s right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, who has consistently downplayed the severity of the coronavirus outbreak, reiterated on Thursday that COVID-19 vaccinations will not be obligatory when they become available.

“Many people want the vaccine to be applied in a coercive way, but there is no law that provides for that,” Bolsonaro said in a Facebook live chat with his supporters.

Vice President Hamilton Mourão said earlier that mass vaccination was inevitable to fight the pandemic in Brazil, but was firmly in line with Bolsonaro’s stance.

“There is no way for the government - unless we live in a dictatorship - to force everyone to get vaccinated,” Mourão said in a radio interview.

In the second worst outbreak outside of the United States, Brazil has recorded more than 4 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and the official death toll from COVID-19 has risen to 124,614, the health ministry said.

In the 24 hours preceding Thursday afternoon, 43,773 new cases were reported in the country and there were 834 deaths from the virus.

Positive news came in from off the coast of Sri Lanka as Indian Coast Guard was able to douse fire in the accommodation area of the oil tanker ship that caught fire on Thursday. The tanker MT New Diamond is still on fire but Indian Coast Guard has kept on its efforts to bring the flames under control.

The Panama flagged ship caught fire as it was hauling crude oil from Kuwait to India. The ship was bound for Paradip in Odisha when fire started in its engine room. The ship was in waters off the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.

Indian Coast Guard said that 22 out of 23 crewmen had been rescued and there was no oil spill.

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif is unlikely to come back to country by September 10 to face cases against him. However, the court also said there was no iota of evidence to suggest that the present accused had in any manner professed or propagated the principles and doctrines of the Tablighi Jamaat or had indulged in Tablighi work as alleged and discharged eight foreigners of all charges.The Saket Court had framed charges against several foreigners under sections 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 (disobeying regulation) of Epidemic Act, 1897.The charges were also framed under section 51 (obstruction) Disaster Management Act, 2005.
