Congratulations on Kennedy and its premiere at Cannes. How does it feel to be part of such a prestigious film festival and have your work showcased on an international platform? A. I think working with Anurag Kashyap... that itself was sort of like winning an award. And then the film reaching to Cannes, I never expected anything like that. I'd never walked the red carpet and I walked the very first red carpet at Cannes. This is always going to stay with me. But I think working with Anurag Kashyap was a far more important thing for me than my film reaching Cannes. Q. You have been a radio jockey and a TV host. Was being an actor always your end-goal? A. Not end goal. End goal toh kuch bhi nahi hai (I don't have an end goal). The day I get bored of acting, I'll leave acting. It's as simple as that. Whatever makes me happy... I've been doing that. However, as the series reached a conclusion, Kendall undergoes a critical realisation. Despite his persuasive speaking abilities and the facade he presents, he comes to terms with the fact that he will never truly surpass his father or even escape his shadow. Logan may be dead, but even now he cannot escape from his influence.</p>

<p>So, in the end, he unravels completely, even indulging in a bit of a physical altercation with Roman. However, rather than coming across as intimidating or formidable, his actions are viewed as pathetic. His ending is more tragic than the others, as he truly has nothing to live for.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I believe Succession ended on a powerful note. It is a testament to Jesse Armstrong and other writers' talent that the show maintained its authenticity and refused to provide a simplistic resolution or redemption for its characters. Right until the end, this show remained true to itself, insightful, and thought-provoking.</p>

<p>Over the last few years, I have made it a point to deliberately seek out more challenging works of art, be it novels, films, or television. This was not easy, since like most of you I grew up on a steady diet of popular entertainment and big, blockbuster franchises. But once I was able to wet my feet, there was no looking back. I found myself, automatically and without effort, drawn to works that are products of a distinct vision and authorial voice. Now, in an age when the industrious gears of creativity are often consumed by formulaic and profit-driven endeavours, I have found a deep appreciation for these stories that do not follow conventional narrative structures, plots that go nowhere (or at least seem to go nowhere), that test the boundaries of storytelling and demand patience from their audience, characters that are sad and funny, pitiful and inspiring, and often not heroic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I credit writer-director Ari Aster and his scintillating debut Hereditary for that shift in my relationship with art. I also liked his next Midsommar, but not nearly as much. His latest <em>Beau Is Afraid </em>has already proven to be extremely divisive overseas, but I was profoundly surprised to find myself enjoying something that many critics have described as a chore and a grind.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The genre-defying film (Wikipedia calls it 'surrealist tragicomedy horror' and it is far from an exhaustive summation) explores a series of bizarre and haunting events that shape the life of its protagonist, Beau Wasserman, played by Joaquin Phoenix.&nbsp;</p>

He is attacked by an intruder, a police officer, and a murderer on the street, and to make matters worse, he is hit by a food truck. Awakening from this traumatic experience, he finds himself in the home of a married couple who have a daughter struggling with suicidal thoughts and a volatile war veteran. And on and on.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And believe it or not, it gets far stranger. This film ventures into realms of strangeness you couldn't even begin to fathom. At one point, it felt as though it was I who was losing my grip on reality. I exaggerate, but only slightly.</p>

<p>Oh, and before I forget, some or none of these events might not really have happened and our protagonist may just be imagining all of it. There is a lot of ambiguity in the film and a dream-like quality to everything that is not dispersed even at the end.</p>

To borrow (and twist) a popular quote from Forrest Gump, <em>Beau is Afraid</em> is like a box of chocolates, except some of those chocolates are filled with existential dread. It tests the patience of viewers with its almost three-hour runtime, but for those willing to invest their time and attention, it offers a highly rewarding experience.</p>

<p>It need not be said, but Phoenix's performance in <em>Beau is Afraid </em>is a mesmerising tour de force. It is a haunting portrayal by one of the best actors of his generation, and I daresay even better than his Oscar-winning turn in Joker. With a delicate interplay of nuanced gestures, penetrating gazes, and an unguarded vulnerability, Phoenix captures the character's internal turmoil with a rare and unfiltered authenticity, immersing viewers in the raw essence of Beau's struggles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aster's signature attention to detail is evident in every frame of Beau Is Afraid. Even the seemingly haphazard sequences reveal themselves upon closer examination to be meticulously crafted and artistically staged. Beau Is Afraid review: Joaquin Phoenix film is a surreal, mind-bending journey worth taking

<p>Once upon a time, in the corporate kingdom of Disney, a trend emerged that aimed to redo animated classics in live-action. However, upon closer inspection, the futility of this endeavour reveals itself, like a fairy godmother's pumpkin carriage turning back into a humble vegetable. In the realm of animation, the artists' brushes create a world where imagination knows no bounds. Talking animals, singing teapots, and magical spells effortlessly transport us into realms uncharted. But when the magic is transposed into live-action, the result can be as underwhelming as a prince who forgets the royal ball's address. The very essence of animation lies in its ability to transcend reality's constraints. In the hands of talented animators and artists, anthropomorphic creatures and fantastical settings flourish, making us believe in a world beyond our own.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yet, when the boundaries of reality are imposed upon these ethereal tales, the results can be as awkward as a fish out of water attempting ballet.</p>

<p>All this to say: you have my permission not to watch Disney's live-action remake of <em>The Little Mermaid.</em> While the original dazzled with its beautifully imaginative underwater kingdom, talking sea creatures, and soundtrack brimming with enchanting melodies, Rob Marshall's remake is a soulless cash grab (I suspect it is not going to grab a lot of cash, either) utterly devoid of any hint of charm of visual whimsy. Instead of vivid colours, here you have drab greys. Even the green and blue of Ariel's getup are so washed out that it looks as if she emerged from a muddy puddle rather than a freaking ocean.</p>

<p>The story is pretty much the same. This is where the movie could have actually done something worthwhile and different. There was an opportunity to reimagine the narrative with a fresh perspective and address certain aspects that could benefit from a contemporary lens. But here, the remake is slavishly faithful to the original.</p>

<p>It follows the story of Ariel Halle Bailey), a mermaid princess, yearns to explore the human world despite the command of her her father Triton, the Sea King (Javier Bardem). She rescues human Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) from a shipwreck and falls in love with him. To explore the human world, she strikes a deal with the sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) to become human for three days and win Eric's love.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No, <em>The Little Mermaid</em> is not worth watching. It is a deeply cynical attempt to capitalise on nostalgia, aiming to squeeze every last drop of profit from a cherished tale without investing the effort to honour its essence. This is a corporate product, through and through. It lacks the heart, the imagination, and the artistic vision that breathed life into the animated classic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also, these films, the Disney live-action remakes, are always made by filmmakers who fail to instill any personality to the narrative, and more often than not try to redo the film almost frame-by-frame. The result, like <em>The Little Mermaid</em> here, is always a pale imitation.</p>

<p>Still, I hazard there are people, particularly young kids, who will enjoy this thing. And that is fine. But even they will be better served by re-watching or watching the animated original.</p>

While the original dazzled with its beautifully imaginative underwater kingdom, talking sea creatures, and soundtrack brimming with enchanting melodies, Rob Marshall's remake is a soulless cash grab (I suspect it is not going to grab a lot of cash, either) utterly devoid of any hint of charm of visual whimsy. Instead of vivid colours, here you have drab greys. Even the green and blue of Ariel's getup are so washed out that it looks as if she emerged from a muddy puddle rather than a freaking ocean. The Little Mermaid story The story is pretty much the same. This is where the movie could have actually done something worthwhile and different. There was an opportunity to reimagine the narrative with a fresh perspective and address certain aspects that could benefit from a contemporary lens. But here, the remake is slavishly faithful to the original. It follows the story of Ariel Halle Bailey), a mermaid princess, yearns to explore the human world despite the command of her her father Triton, the Sea King (Javier Bardem). She rescues human Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) from a shipwreck and falls in love with him. It is a deeply cynical attempt to capitalise on nostalgia, aiming to squeeze every last drop of profit from a cherished tale without investing the effort to honour its essence. This is a corporate product, through and through. It lacks the heart, the imagination, and the artistic vision that breathed life into the animated classic. Also, these films, the Disney live-action remakes, are always made by filmmakers who fail to instill any personality to the narrative, and more often than not try to redo the film almost frame-by-frame. The result, like The Little Mermaid here, is always a pale imitation. Still, I hazard there are people, particularly young kids, who will enjoy this thing. And that is fine. But even they will be better served by re-watching or watching the animated original. Performances are good, but not good enough The cast, led by the talented Halle Bailey as Ariel, delivers decent enough performances. Bailey is truly good, and it is a shame that her first big break is this leaden remake. McCarthy is delightful and very well-cast in the villainous role.
