How did a mathematician of antiquity create something that is, well, magical (never mind Jürgen's protestations that it works on simple maths)? A good question. We never get a good answer. Nevertheless, this 20-minute opening sequence encapsulates the essence of Indiana Jones, delivering fast-paced, thrilling action involving gunfights, quips, and lots of Nazis meeting their maker. <p>Where do I start? I was really excited initially because I thought our cinema is waking up to our scriptures. We've been so ignorant of our own scriptures for a long time. And finally, it seemed we are waking up. You go in with that kind of expectation, and then you see something like that and then it really disappoints from an audience point of view. And also from an actor's and an artists'&nbsp;point of view, it is even more disappointing. The film lacks intent and research. It is a lazy attempt at making Ramayana and it's like you've made it out of WhatsApp forwards. You're trying to play to the gallery and it shows in the content. It's like just trying to cash in on to the Hindu wave in the nation right now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If one sets out to make something like this in India, it comes with a huge responsibility — not as a maker, but as a conscious citizen. Because cinema and literature are two mediums that educate a generation, even the subsequent 10 generations. And if you're claiming that we are making it for Gen Z, then the responsibility is even bigger. You cannot distort history and facts. You have to be very, very authentic and honest in your depiction so that they can watch and learn from it. If you are distorting our history then it becomes a cultural crime for me.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. As somebody who has played Rama, what qualities do you believe are essential to capture the essence of the character?</strong></h2>

<p>The basic things are humility and honesty. All that [Ram's qualities] are mentioned in popular fiction too, that he was truthful and genuine. So if you are not clear there, it becomes very difficult to portray Rama. What we used to do to play Rama, we did not impose our thoughts on Ram. We need to understand Rama's perspective to portray him. 'What would Ram say? What would Ram do?' They [<em>Adipurush </em>makers] are trying to portray what <em>they&nbsp;</em>think about Ram. Nobody's interested in that. People want to know what Ram thinks. There is no emotion in the film. You do not connect to anything.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Q. Do you think this is the case of focussing too much on visual spectacle at the expense of storytelling?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>I think our filmmakers are suffering from an inferiority complex. We have a colonised mindset. We feel shame in depicting our culture, our society the way it is and the way it has been. Rather than taking pride in it, we try to ape the Western style of filmmaking. I understand they are much more advanced in technology. So take the technology, use the resources, but tell an Indian story! Do not tell a Westernised version of an Indian story Very few of our filmmakers have a truly India-rooted outlook towards our own culture and society. We do not make such brains right now. So it's really difficult to see authentic stuff right now.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. How important is it to you that adaptations and portrayals of mythological epics stay true to the source material?</strong></h2>

<p>There cannot be a retelling of things, there can only be inspired versions of them. Now, our scriptures, our epics... they are written in a way that they will inspire 10,000 things in you. That is the beauty of them. When we read them my interpretation will be different from yours. They force you to find yourself. I tell you what, every depiction of a hero or heroin, or a villain ever in Indian cinema is inspired by either Ramayana or Mahabharata. They all have emerged from these stories. We look to our heroes for the same qualities that Ram or Krishna had.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So you make whatever you want to make! Who's stopping you? But when we have set out to make a depiction of an epic, it has to be true to the events described, history, and context. If I am making Ramayana, I have to get things right. If I do not do that, I am rewriting history and nobody has given me the right. We are not Tulsidas or Valmiki to recreate Ramayana. That is where the line should be drawn.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. Do you think there are any positive aspects of <em>Adipurush </em>that should be acknowledged despite all the criticism?</strong></h2>

<p>I think two things one is the sheer imagination of the fact that how the battle would have gone. There are things to see in those scenes. Then Saif's acting, his screen presence. He has done work on himself and it reflects on screen. He's brought some nuances here and there and he really captures the screen.</p>

I think our filmmakers are suffering from an inferiority complex. We have a colonised mindset. We feel shame in depicting our culture, our society the way it is and the way it has been. So take the technology, use the resources, but tell an Indian story! There cannot be a retelling of things, there can only be inspired versions of them. Now, our scriptures, our epics... they are written in a way that they will inspire 10,000 things in you. That is the beauty of them. When we read them my interpretation will be different from yours. They force you to find yourself. I tell you what, every depiction of a hero or heroin, or a villain ever in Indian cinema is inspired by either Ramayana or Mahabharata. They all have emerged from these stories. We look to our heroes for the same qualities that Ram or Krishna had. So you make whatever you want to make! Who's stopping you? But when we have set out to make a depiction of an epic, it has to be true to the events described, history, and context. If I am making Ramayana, I have to get things right. In a notable scene, the person responsible for onboarding the Lumens refuses to learn their names in their own language, opting instead to anglicise them. Wade finds Lumens' food too fiery (read spicy) for him and has to dunk it in water to make it palatable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of Wade's family members praises Ember's command over their language, to which she responds (and I am paraphrasing) how surprising that is, considering she was born in the city and it is her native language. The film is full of these little moments that talk about the issues related to cultural assimilation and identity.</p>

The 3D does not do much here (these days, only James Cameron can be trusted to do something interesting with the technology) so I recommend catching the movie in much cheaper 2D.&nbsp;</p>

There are also echoes of Invasion of the Body Snatchers if you are willing to go further back. Notably, Don Siegel's iconic 1956 sci-fi thriller inspired the Secret Invasion storyline.&nbsp;</p>

In <em>Secret Invasion</em>, the stakes are still fairly high. A world needs saving. But to do that, the writers and Fury make the decision to operate in the shadows and avoid seeking the support of superheroes. Of course, one or two Avengers can make quick work of the entire renegade Skrull force and there will be little, if any, collateral damage. They might be shapeshifters but Skrulls are not superpowered. But such a swift resolution would render Nick Fury's role obsolete and negate the existence of the show itself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I didn't mind, having had enough of CGI whirlwind of battles in films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. By operating outside the realm of conventional MCU superheroics, the series is able to explore the gritty world of espionage. &nbsp;It allows for the exploration of deeper character dynamics, showcasing the resourcefulness and cunning of Fury that really made him one of the most dangerous people on earth, superpowers or not.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>So... is Secret Invasion any good?</strong></h2>

<p>Critics were only provided with a couple of episodes. Thus far, the show is very watchable, though far from perfect. It is low on action but there is an abundance of tension and suspense. The character-driven storytelling allows the truly fantastic cast to shine. Jackson is astounding as Fury, at ease and casual, and yet there are hints of deep scars that extend beyond his ruined eye. His very way of walking conveys the weight of his experiences and the secrets he carries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Colman is delightfully deranged in the role of Sonya, a sweet-talking agent who is the kind of woman who would break fingers first, and ask questions later — with a wide and toothy materteral grin. Mendelsohn also gets a lot to do as Talos, much more than Captain Marvel, and makes it worthwhile.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is a palpable atmosphere of suspicion in the story, though the series does not take the route of making shocking revelations of this or that character being exposed as a Skrull. It might change in the subsequent episodes, though. That... is a choice. I didn't mind that all that much.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I do hope that in episode 3 onwards, the writers prove that deliberate choice to hold back on or even forego reveals suggests that the series delves deep into the complexities of trust and deception rather than surface-level shocks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If Secret Invasion can stick to the landing, it will be the best MCU show for me. Though, admittedly, that is not a very high bar.</p>

This project went through such turmoil, with filmmakers and writers coming and going like they were auditioning for a revolving door, and then Ezra Miller going on a crime spree throughout the entire western hemisphere even as the rest of the world hunkered down in their homes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. There were at least three moments when it seemed downright impossible for the film, in its current Miller-led form, to ever make it to the screen. But miraculously, the cosmic forces aligned, and here we are, witnessing the improbable birth of <em>The Flash.</em> But was it worth it?</p>

<p>Suddenly, the concept of multiverse (infinite universes or parallel realities) is all the rage these days in superhero cinema. It really blew up with 2018's S<em>pider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse</em>, a thrilling, visually astounding animated adventure that, unlike <em>Spider-Man: No Way Home</em> in late 2021, did not use the concept merely for a fan service and a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but as a core storytelling device. <em>The Flash</em>, it must be said, is like an amalgam of both approaches. It is nowhere near the level of <em>Into the Spider-Verse</em> (or indeed, its recently released sequel <em>Across the Spider-Verse</em>), but I feel it deals with parallel realities in a more interesting way than <em>No Way Home.</em></p>

<h2><strong>What is<em> The Flash</em> all about?</strong></h2>

<p>Miller essays Barry Allen in <em>The Flash</em>, the titular superhero and a member of the Justice League who is the fastest man on earth and uses his speed to fight bad guys. He is so fast, in fact, that he has the ability to exceed the speed of light and thus affect time. And it is this ability of his that is the cause of much of his trouble in the movie. Inspired by the <em>Flashpoint </em>storyline from comics, the film brings back Michael Keaton as Batman and even features a cameo from Ben Affleck's Batman — since there can be multiple versions of the same character.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the film, Barry is still not over the death of his mother Nora Allen (Maribel Verdú), who was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant when he was still a child. Barry's father Henry Allen (Ron Livingston) was wrongfully convicted of his wife's murder. So the tragedy effectively ruined three lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite warnings by Batman (the Ben Affleck one), who urges him to make peace with his scars ("Our scars make us who we are," he claims), Barry decides to use Speed Force and break the temporal barrier to go back in time to prevent his mother's death so he will have that idyllic childhood he was deprived of. And of course, chaos ensues. As happens in these movies, changing just one minute thing can have a ripple effect powerful enough to eventually destroy all reality.</p>

<h2><strong>Is <em>The Flash</em> any good?</strong></h2>

<p>I absolutely loved<em> The Flash</em>. It might be my favourite DC movie since 2017's <em>Wonder Woman</em>. There are a couple of missteps and I was mildly annoyed by the overuse of CGI and fan service overload particularly in the third act, but the film managed to rise above these issues. Even much of the fan service and cameos, except for one egregious instance, I grudgingly admit I cheered at the top of my voice. If you believed the trailers for the film were spoiler-y, you are in for multiple surprises. Most of these moments are just for laughs (and cheers) and are not meant to have any major ramification in terms of the future of DCU.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Christina Hodson's script struck a nice balance of the dark and light tones, I thought. and was able to incorporate moments of intensity and gravity without losing the overall sense of fun and adventure. One aspect that stood out to me was the film's unwavering heart and humour. Miller was, and I cannot stress this enough, brilliant as the two quite distinct versions of the speedster superhero, and nicely evoked that contrast between a veteran Flash and a kid learning to deal with his new superpowers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The relationship between Barry and his mother was at the core of this movie and it added a poignant and emotional depth to Barry's arc. The film is above all about loss and the yearning for that elusive connection, and finally coming to terms with it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Keaton was, well, Keaton. Which is to say, very watchable. His Batman is not my favourite live-action avatar of the superhero, but it comes close. (Those on social media questioning how a 70-year-old man without any superpower can be this lithe and athletic are missing the point of these movies.)</p>

<p>The action is great and in kicking butt, every single superhero gets spotlight, though I once again reiterate CGI is dodgy at times and I mean distractingly dodgy.&nbsp;</p>
