<p>Russian forces on Saturday launched an attack in the centre of Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine, which had largely remained untouched by air strikes since the start of Moscow's invasion. Chernihiv is situated about 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Kyiv, near the border with Moscow-aligned Belarus.<br />

"As of 3:25 pm (local time), 117 people were injured in the terrorist attack on the centre of Chernihiv, seven of them died," Oleksandr Lomako, Chernihiv's acting mayor had said on Telegram, earlier. The Ukrainian Interior Minister&nbsp;Ihor Klymenko later reported that 129 people had been injured, among whom were 15 children and 15 police&nbsp;officers.&nbsp;<br />

According to Ukrainian media reports&nbsp;a public event featuring drone manufacturers had been taking place inside the theatre at the time of the attack. However,&nbsp;Klymenko only confirmed that an&nbsp;unspecified event had been taking place&nbsp;and that&nbsp;Ukraine's domestic security service was investigating the matter.&nbsp;<br />

<strong>UN condemns attack</strong></p>

<p>In a statement, the United Nations'&nbsp;humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine&nbsp;condemned the Russian missile attack on&nbsp;Chernihiv's city centre and called it&nbsp;"heinous". The UN official also called for&nbsp;Moscow to end strikes on "populated areas".</p>

<p>"It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians," said&nbsp;Denise Brown, UN official for&nbsp;Ukraine,&nbsp;in an online statement, referring to the&nbsp;Orthodox holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord.&nbsp;<br />

The holiday&nbsp;saw some in Chernihiv attending church services in the morning.&nbsp;"I condemn this repeated pattern of Russian strikes on populated areas of Ukraine, causing deaths, massive destruction and soaring humanitarian needs," Brown added.&nbsp;<br />

<strong>Zelensky calls for action</strong></p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to X (formerly Twitter)&nbsp;and shared a video of the attack which he said involved&nbsp;a&nbsp;university. He also asked the world to take action against the Russian "terror".</p>

<p>"This is what it means to live next to a terrorist state. This is what we are uniting the entire world against. Today, a Russian missile hit the heart of Chernihiv. A square, a university, and a theater. Russia turned an ordinary Saturday into a day of pain and loss. There are casualties. My condolences to everyone who has lost a loved one. All services are working on the site. Rescuers, police, doctors. I urge the world to stand up to Russian terror. Provide Ukraine with additional tools to safeguard life. For life to win, Russia must lose this war," he wrote on X.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Kyiv missile attempt intercepted</strong></h2>

<p>In a separate incident, the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv, made an unsuccessful "terrorist" attempt to strike Crimea "using an&nbsp;S-200 surface-to-air missile re-equipped into a strike weapon," Russian Defence Ministry said. Russian air defence systems successfully intercepted the missile in the air. The ministry also said that there were no casualties or damage caused on the ground.</p>

<h2><strong>Putin's meeting with military commanders</strong></h2>

<p>President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting with Russia's top military leaders at the command post of the Russian "special military operation" in Rostov-on-Don, a city in southern Russia.</p>

<p>"I am originally from Purulia in the Indian state of West Bengal," said&nbsp;photographer Vicky Roy as he reminisced about his humble beginnings. He started talking about his life story by sharing a big decision he made at the tender age of 11 – to run away from home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The conditions in my family were not good," he recalled.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Driven by the belief that cities held the promise of fame and fortune, he stole money from his uncle's pocket and boarded a train to Delhi, uncertain of what lay ahead.</p>

<h2><strong>A glimmer of hope</strong></h2>

<p>Stranded at the Delhi railway station, tears streaming down his face, Vicky was approached by some ragpickers, children his own age.&nbsp;"We can be good friends," they offered. Vicky joined them in rag-picking, and later worked at a dhaba (a roadside restaurant).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amidst this struggle, someone at the restaurant encouraged him to prioritise education over labour&nbsp;and took Vicky to the Salaam Baalak Trust in Delhi's Paharganj.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Apna Ghar," the shelter home under the trust, welcomed him into an environment where school and diverse activities transformed his outlook.</p>

<p>"There were around 50 children there, including myself. Some of those kids used to do theatre, some would attend dance classes, and some would learn Karate. While I was doing theatre,&nbsp;I realised there is not much I could do in that field."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He adapted to this new life, but it was photography that sparked his passion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite doubts about his academic background, he pursued his interest, learning the art of photography as an assistant to a Delhi photographer Anay Mann.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I started assisting him. He used to give me Rs 3000 per month as salary. After working there for two months, I took a loan of Rs 28,500 from Salaam Baalak to purchase a camera - a Nikon S80. I used to pay back Rs 500 every month to clear my loan."</p>

<h2><strong>Navigating life's challenges</strong></h2>

<p>With a meager income, Vicky faced financial hardships but remained undeterred.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Sometimes, I used to work as a waiter at weddings," he shared with WION, describing his determination to survive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Life in a rented apartment, living with his friends, in Delhi's Mehrauli area was marked by frugality. They bought inexpensive clothes from Chor Bazar. He travelled while hiding his face on the last seat of Blueline buses, to avoid paying for a ticket.</p>

<h2><strong>Success through lens</strong></h2>

<p>In 2007, Vicky's first solo exhibition, "Street Dream," took him on a journey beyond imagination.&nbsp;Supported by the British High Commission, this exhibition propelled him onto international platforms, from London to South Africa and Vietnam.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recognition only grew as the photographer documented the World Trade Center's reconstruction in New York.&nbsp;<br />

"New York gave me confidence as I saw a lot of Japanese and Europeans there had poor English but they work there with confidence. So, there I got the idea that if your work is good, language does not matter."</p>

<p>He was also called to London to have lunch with Prince Edward at Buckingham Palace in the UK. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Essence of giving back</strong></h2>

<p>He engaged in projects for societal benefit through his photography.&nbsp;His German friend built a skate park in Madhya Pradesh and he donated his artwork during its construction and frequently visited for shoots.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2016, learning about water scarcity in Bundelkhand during summers, he and his friend, then raised Rs 8 lakh by selling the photos of that very skate park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Australia's Victoria state will pay A$380 million ($243 million) to Commonwealth Games organisers, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said on Saturday, after it withdrew as 2026 event host citing a projected cost blowout.</p>

<p>In July, Victoria pulled out of hosting the quadrennial multi-sport event, which was to have been held in four regional hubs, with Andrews saying costs could have ballooned to more than A$7 billion from a budgeted A$2.6 billion.</p>

<p>The decision has raised the possibility that the Games may not take place for the first time since being cancelled due to the Second World War.</p>

<p>Singhania has gone a step further by expressing his genuine apprehension that the Maserati MC20 poses a significant risk to drivers, prompting him to implore Indian authorities and consumer courts to investigate the matter.</p>

'Got lemon': Indian billionaire's $ 0.42 million Maserati purchase takes a sour turn

<p>West African military chiefs said on Friday they were ready for an armed intervention in Niger after a coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum last month, but a diplomatic mission was possible over the weekend to keep talks open.</p>

<p>The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has agreed to activate a "standby force" as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger after generals toppled and detained Bazoum on July 26.</p>

<p>ECOWAS defence chiefs met this week in the Ghanaian capital Accra to fine-tune details of a potential military operation to restore Bazoum if ongoing negotiations with coup leaders fail.</p>

<p>"We are ready to go any time the order is given," said Abdel-Fatau Musah, an ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs and security.</p>

<p>But the leaders also say they still favour dialogue and that ECOWAS could send a diplomatic mission to Niger on Saturday.</p>

<p>"Tomorrow there is the possibility of an ECOWAS mission going into Niger to continue to pursue the peaceful path to restoration of constitutional order," he said.</p>

<p>"We are ready to resolve the issue peacefully but it takes two to tango."</p>

<p>ECOWAS leaders say they have to act after Niger became the fourth West African nation since 2020 to suffer a coup, following Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea.</p>

<p>The Sahel region is struggling with growing jihadist insurgencies linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State. Frustration over the violence has in part prompted the military takeovers.</p>

<p>ECOWAS troops have intervened in other emergencies since 1990, including civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Ivory Coast, Benin and Nigeria are expected to contribute troops to a Niger mission.</p>

<h2><strong>'Grave consequences'</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Bazoum, whose 2021 election was a landmark in Niger's troubled history, has been held with his family at the president's official residence since the coup, with growing international concern over his conditions in detention.</p>

<p>ECOWAS chair and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Friday threatened Niamey with "grave consequences" if the new regime allows Bazoum's health to worsen under house arrest, an EU official said.</p>

<p>During a call to EU chief Charles Michel, Tinubu noted: "President Bazoum's detention conditions are deteriorating."</p>

<p>"Any further deterioration to his well-being status will have grave consequences."</p>

<p>Niger's military-appointed prime minister, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, told The New York Times that the coup leaders would do Bazoum no harm.</p>

<p>"Nothing will happen to him, because we don't have a tradition of violence in Niger," the most senior civilian in the new regime told the newspaper in an interview from Dakar.</p>

<h2><strong>Militarily risky</strong></h2>

<p>Details of the Niger operation have not been released and analysts say any intervention would be politically and militarily risky, especially for regional player Nigeria.</p>

<p>Nigeria is already struggling to contain violence from several armed groups at home, and leaders in the country's north have warned about spillover from Niger across the border if there is an intervention.</p>

<p>Niger's coup leaders have warned against any military strikes and defiantly threatened to charge Bazoum with treason. But they have also said they are open to talks.</p>

<p>The military-ruled governments in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso have also said an intervention in Niger would be seen as a declaration of war against them.</p>

<p>ECOWAS has already applied trade and financial sanctions on Niger while France, Germany and the United States have suspended aid programmes.</p>

<p>Germany's foreign ministry has also said it wants the EU to impose sanctions on the coup leaders, saying that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had held talks with her French and US counterparts.</p>

<p>UN rights chief Volker Turk slammed the generals who seized power on "a whim", plunging Niger further into misery and stranding thousands of migrants.</p>

<p>"The very notion of freedoms in Niger is at stake," he said. "Rule-by-gun has no place in today's world."</p>

West Africa military chiefs ready for intervention in Niger; ECOWAS to send diplomatic mission

<p>Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi has expressed fears regarding her husband's safety at District Jail Attock, Punjab saying his life might be at risk due to the possibility of poisoning while in custody. An Islamabad court on August 5 found Imran Khan guilty in a case related to the non-disclosure of information about state gifts and sentenced him to three years in prison.</p>

<p>Following the verdict, he was apprehended by Punjab police from his residence in Zaman Park, Lahore, and taken to District Jail Attock.&nbsp;Imran Khan's lawyer, Naeem Haider Panjutha, has repeatedly criticised the conditions under which the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is being held.</p>

He said there is an open washroom there, which does not have a shower.&nbsp;He said the jail has flies in the morning and insects in the evening."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Bushra Bibi's letter&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Bushra Bibi, in a letter dated August 17, addressed to the Punjab home secretary,&nbsp;sought her husband's transfer from District Jail Attock to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. She expressed apprehension that Imran Khan's life might be at risk due to the possibility of poisoning while in custody.</p>

<p>Bushra Bibi questioned the justification for her husband's detention at Attock jail and underscored his eligibility for B-Class facilities based on his stature and achievements.&nbsp;She cited his role as the former captain of Pakistan's national cricket team, his status as an Oxford University alumnus, and his past position as the prime minister of Pakistan.</p>

<p>“It was duty of the jail authorities to provide him all the facilities within 48 hours but even after lapse of 12 days no facility whatsoever has been provided which is disgrace to the leader of the largest political party,” she said. “An exhaustive legal inquiry be undertaken to elucidate the legality of his current detention within your jurisdiction,” she appealed to the provincial home secretary.</p>

<p>In addition to requesting B-Class facilities, Bushra Bibi asked for provisions such as access to home-cooked meals and the ability to consult his personal physician.</p>
