Poland education minister working to extradite Nazi veteran honoured in Canadian Parliament

<p>A Thai court on Tuesday jailed one of the leading figures in the kingdom's youth-led pro-democracy protest movement for four years on royal insult charges.</p>

<p>Anon Numpa was convicted under Thailand's tough lese-majeste laws over a speech he made in Bangkok in 2020 at the height of the street demonstrations.</p>

<p>Anon was one of a number of protesters who made unprecedented calls for reform to the monarchy and to the legislation that protects King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his close family from criticism.</p>

<p>Bangkok's Criminal Court ruled Tuesday that Anon's speech at Democracy Monument amounted to lese-majeste, sentencing him to four years in prison.</p>

<p>He was also fined 20,000 baht ($550) for violating an emergency decree in effect at the time.</p>

<p>"Loss of personal freedom is a sacrifice I'm willing to make," Anon, 39, told reporters as he entered the court with his partner and their baby, ahead of the sentence.</p>

<p>"We've come a long way and we've seen lots of changes in the Thai political scene since the movement back in 2020," he said.</p>

<p>"If I get sentenced to prison today, it might be many years but it will be worth it."</p>

Treasure hunt: British Museum launches hotline, asks people to help find missing artefacts

<p>After the heartbreaking death of a one-year-old child from fentanyl overdose at a nursery in New York City, the husband of the Bronx daycare owner, charged with murder,&nbsp;has been apprehended in Mexico after about 10 days on the run, media reports suggested.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fentanyl was reportedly found hidden under a nap mat in the nursery.&nbsp;Surveillance footage showed Felix Herrera sneaking out of the Kingsbridge childcare centre just moments before 1-year-old Nicholas Feliz Dominici was found dying from the drug.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US Marshal Service, in collaboration with Mexican authorities and the US Drug Enforcement Administration, tracked Herrera to Texas before he was captured on a bus headed to Sinaloa, the New York Post reported. Now, Herrera is expected to be extradited to the US and face charges in the case.&nbsp;</p>

Now, Herrera is expected to be extradited to the US and face charges in the case. Jaishankar addressed the situation in India's northeastern state of Manipur during a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, where he said that efforts are ongoing to bring a sense of normalcy.&nbsp;The minister said, “If you ask me what is happening today in Manipur…One part of the problem in Manipur has been the destabilising impact of migrants who have come…There are also tensions that have a long history…The effort is on the part of the State government and Union government, to find a way by which a sense of normalcy returns.”</p>

<p>Jaishankar stated that part of the problem stemmed from the destabilising impact of migrants in the region. Additionally, he noted historical tensions in Manipur that have contributed to the challenges faced by the state.</p>

<p>"The effort is on the part of the State government and Union government, to find a way by which a sense of normalcy returns," the Indian foreign minister affirmed.&nbsp;These efforts, Jaishankar said, include the recovery of seized arms and the enforcement of law and order to prevent incidents of violence.</p>

<h2><strong>UN experts' concerns and India's reply&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In early September, United Nations experts raised the alarm about "reports of serious human rights violations and abuses in the Northeast State of Manipur in India, including alleged acts of sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, home destruction, forced displacement, torture and ill-treatment".</p>

<p>In a statement, they said that there is an “inadequate humanitarian response” in the Indian state of Manipur after May clashes between Meitei and the Kuki ethnic communities. However, India rubbished the statement and termed it "unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading."</p>

<p>The law and order situation has once more become tense in Manipur.&nbsp;This comes in the wake of protests after two students were brutally murdered by suspected armed men. Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence since May. Over 160 people have been killed while tens of thousands have been displaced.</p>

<p>The violence started after a court ordered the state government to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education enjoyed by the tribal Kuki people to the majority Meitei population as well.</p>
