People of the LGBTQ community across the United States (US) are arming themselves over a perceived concern that they would be rounded up and placed in concentration camps under the second Trump administration, American media reported on Sunday (January 5).&nbsp;
Since Donald Trump won the November 5, 2024, presidential election, non-traditional gun groups across the US have seen a flood of interest (in purchasing firearms).&nbsp;
<h2>The surge in firearm training requests&nbsp;</h2>
Speaking to The Philadelphia Inquirer, a spokesperson from the Liberal Gun Club said that the group received thousands of firearm training requests since the polls, more than in all 2023 combined.&nbsp;

The foreign ministers of Germany and France met Syria's de-facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Friday (January 3) on behalf of the European Union (EU).

Footage published by news agencies showed Baerbock and Barrot sitting&nbsp;with Sharaa for talks at the presidential palace.

Barrot expressed hope for a "sovereign, stable, and peaceful" Syria. It was also a "hope that the aspirations of all Syrians can be realised", he added, "but it is a fragile hope."
Meanwhile, Baerbock said in a statement that Germany wanted to help Syria become a "safe home" for all its people, and a "functioning state, with full control over its territory."
She said the visit was a "clear signal" to Damascus of the possibility of a new relationship between&nbsp;Syria and Germany, and Europe more broadly.
Despite HTS being designated a terrorist organisation by several international governments, the German foreign minister said, "We must not miss the opportunity to support the Syrian people at this important crossroads."
Berlin was ready to support "an inclusive and peaceful transfer of power", as well as social "reconciliation", Baerbock said.
She also urged Syria's new leaders to avoid "acts of vengeance against groups within the population."

Tahlequah, an endangered Pacific Northwest orca that came into the news in 2018 for carrying her dead newborn for more than two weeks is doing it again following the death of her new calf, American media reported early Friday (Jan 3) citing researchers.
Tahlequah, also known as J35, was seen carrying the body of the deceased female calf since Wednesday. In a post on Facebook, the Center for Whale Research said that it was deeply saddened by the news.&nbsp;

The centre said that roughly two weeks ago, it had been made aware of the new calf. But, on Christmas Eve, the agency said that it was concerned about the calf's health based on its behaviour and that of its mother.
<h2>'Calf was alive only for a handful of days'</h2>
Speaking to the Associated Press, a research scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Brad Hanson said that by New Year's Day (January 1), the agency confirmed that J35 was carrying her calf's dead body.
Hanson said that J35 was draping the dead calf across her snout or on top of her head and that she appeared to dive for it when it sank from the surface.&nbsp;

The calf was only alive for a handful of days. In a post on Facebook, the Center for Whale Research said that it was deeply saddened by the news.

Tahlequah, an endangered Pacific Northwest orca that came into the news in 2018 for carrying her dead newborn for more than two weeks is doing it again following the death of her new calf, American media reported early Friday (Jan 3) citing researchers. Tahlequah, also known as J35, was seen carrying the body of the deceased female calf since Wednesday. In a post on Facebook, the Center for Whale Research said that it was deeply saddened by the news. But, on Christmas Eve, the agency said that it was concerned about the calf's health based on its behaviour and that of its mother. 'Calf was alive only for a handful of days' Speaking to the Associated Press, a research scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Brad Hanson said that by New Year's Day (January 1), the agency confirmed that J35 was carrying her calf's dead body. Hanson said that J35 was draping the dead calf across her snout or on top of her head and that she appeared to dive for it when it sank from the surface. Tragedy strikes again: Orca who carried dead newborn in 2018 loses another calf

Over five years after the Covid pandemic originated in China and led to worldwide health chaos, the country is now facing another virus outbreak.&nbsp;
According to reports and social media posts, China is dealing with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV).
As per social media posts, a state of emergency has been declared in China as not just HMPV, but other viruses including Influenza A are rapidly spreading.
Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about HMPV:
<h2>What is HMPV?</h2>
According to the Cleveland Clinic, HMPV usually causes symptoms similar to a cold. Most of the cases of HMPV are mild, but young children, adults over the age of 65 and people with a weakened immune system are at a higher risk for serious illness.

Cleveland Clinic says that HMPV often causes upper respiratory infections, but it can sometimes lower respiratory infections like pneumonia, and asthma flare-ups or make chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) worse.
The infections are more common during winter and early spring.
<h2>What causes HMPV?</h2>
"A virus &mdash; a small germ that uses your cells to make more copies of itself &mdash; causes HMPV. It&rsquo;s part of the same group of viruses that cause RSV, measles and mumps," Cleveland Clinic says.&nbsp;
<h2>What are the symptoms?</h2>
The symptoms include- cough, fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing, shortness of breath, and rash.
<h2>How does the virus spread?</h2>
HMPV transmits through direct contact with someone who has it or from touching things contaminated with the virus.&nbsp;

The virus can spread by coughing and sneezing; shaking hands, hugging or kissing; and touching surfaces or objects like phones, door handles, keyboards or toys.
<h2>What precautions should be observed?</h2>
These precautions can be observed to avoid getting infected:
&gt; Washing hands often with soap or using a hand sanitiser.
&gt; Covering nose or mouth while sneezing or coughing.
&gt; Wearing a mask when you're sick and cannot avoid being around others.
&gt; Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth unless your hands are clean.
&gt; Avoid sharing food or eating in same utensils.
<h2>How can HMPV be treated?</h2>
Doctors treat HMPV with the following methods- oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and corticosteroids.&nbsp;

An unexpected visitor: Massive space debris crash-lands in village in Kenya- Watch

The wife of Matthew Livelsberger, who blew up a Tesla Cybertruck packed with fireworks outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday (January 1), broke up with him six days ago before he killed himself inside the truck, American media reported on Thursday.&nbsp;
Livelsberger, a Green Beret (member of US Army special forces), shot himself in the head just before detonation. The explosion caused minor injuries to seven people. Livelsberger was 37 at the time of his death.
<h2>An argument with wife over apparent infidelity</h2>
Citing sources, a report by the New York Post late Thursday said that Livelsberger left his Colorado Springs home on December 26 following an argument with his wife over apparent infidelity.&nbsp;

Sources said that Livelsberger's wife told him that she knew he had been cheating on her. The two (Livelsberger and his wife) were parents to a baby girl.&nbsp;
The report said that with this development, investigators were now probing whether the 37-year-old's motive was personal rather than political as previously considered given the location of the detonation and the choice of the vehicle.
Earlier, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had been looking into the possibility that the bombing was political as the explosion happened outside President-elect Donald Trump's hotel and inside a vehicle made by Trump's close ally Elon Musk.
But, this would not be the case as Livelsberger was a staunch Trump supporter.&nbsp;
<h2>'If Livelsberger had used a normal vehicle...'</h2>
Sources also told the New York Post that if Livelsberger had used a normal vehicle (instead of a Cybertruck), the explosion would have likely taken out the glass doors of the Trump International Hotel and possibly the lobby- potentially killing innocent bystanders.

Following an argument with his wife, Livelsberger rented the Cybertruck and bought the fireworks and weapons.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that among the charred items found inside the truck were a handgun at the 37-year-old's feet, another firearm, many fireworks, a military ID, credit cards, an iPhone, and a smartwatch.

The Tesla Cybertruck explosion occurred outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The explosion caused minor injuries to seven people.

The wife of Matthew Livelsberger, who blew up a Tesla Cybertruck packed with fireworks outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday (January 1), broke up with him six days ago before he killed himself inside the truck, American media reported on Thursday. Livelsberger, a Green Beret (member of US Army special forces), shot himself in the head just before detonation. The explosion caused minor injuries to seven people. Livelsberger was 37 at the time of his death. An argument with wife over apparent infidelity Citing sources, a report by the New York Post late Thursday said that Livelsberger left his Colorado Springs home on December 26 following an argument with his wife over apparent infidelity. The two (Livelsberger and his wife) were parents to a baby girl. But, this would not be the case as Livelsberger was a staunch Trump supporter. 'If Livelsberger had used a normal vehicle...' Tech billionaire Elon Musk has opened a new front of attack against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, this time accusing him of failing to bring to justice 'rape gangs' when Starmer was the head of the country's prosecution service.
In a series of posts on his social media platform X, Musk said on Thursday (Jan 2), "In the UK, serious crimes such as rape require the Crown Prosecution Service's (CPS) approval for the police to charge suspects."

For several years, there has been systematic rape of young females in the UK by organised gangs, including those in Rotherham, Bristol, Rochdale, Cornwall, and Derbyshire. Many of these gangs were operated by mainly Pakistan-origin men.&nbsp;
Musk's remarks against Prime Minister Starmer came hours after Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called for a full national public inquiry into the rape gangs scandal.

Syria's Education Minister Nazir al-Qadir on Thursday (Jan 2) defended the changes in the country's school curriculum, which were widely criticised.
In a statement shared on Telegram, Education Minister al-Qadir said that the changes were only meant to scrap the glorifying references to ousted president Bashar al-Assad and correct the misinterpretations of the Quran.
"The curricula in all Syrian schools will remain as is until specialised committees are formed to review and audit them," al-Qadir said.

"We have only ordered the deletion of parts glorifying the defunct Assad regime, and we have adopted pictures of the Syrian Revolution flag instead of the defunct regime flag," he added.
<h2>What has been changed in the curriculum?</h2>
The education ministry announced the changes on Wednesday in a post on Facebook.
The changes included scrapping poetry relating to women and love and references to "Gods" in ancient history courses and interpreting a Quranic verse about those who had angered God and strayed as referring to "Jews and Nasara", a derogatory term for Christians.
Syria's national anthem was also removed from textbooks, with the ministry describing it as the anthem of the fallen Assad government.

The nationalistic phrase "to sacrifice one's life in defence of his homeland" has been replaced with the Islamist "to sacrifice one's life for the sake of Allah."
<h2>Outrage over the changes</h2>
Many took to social media to express outrage over the changes in the curriculum. Critics warned that "education based on extremist ideologies may shape individuals whose ideas threaten regional and international security."
"Changing the curriculum under the supervision of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is not just an educational danger, but a long-term threat to the social fabric and future of Syria," journalist Shiyar Khaleal said in a post on Facebook.

The changes to the curriculum came days after Germany said it would back $62.70 million worth of projects in Syria to boost education, women's rights, and other areas in the aftermath of Assad's ouster.
In a statement, Development Minister Svenja Schulze said, "We have clearly formulated our expectations: an education system free of ideology, discrimination, and exclusion."
