Protests were held outside the Google Cloud Next conference in San Francisco, California on Tuesday (August 29) against the American tech giant's contract with the Israeli government to provide cloud services for the country's public sector and military. The protesters are part of the "No Tech for Apartheid" campaign, a coalition of current and former Google workers as well as community members and other activists. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, around 100 people attended the protest and it was not known how many of them were from Google. "We have more reasons than ever to recommit ourselves to organizing to ensure that tech companies like Google, based right here in the Bay and in the United States, cannot continue profiting off of and powering Israeli apartheid," Dani Noble, an organiser with Jewish Voice for Peace, said on Tuesday. "These workers have been organizing for two years because they don't want their labour to be used to power Israeli apartheid and violations of Palestinian human rights," Noble added. What is Project Nimbus? Signed in May 2021, Project Nimbus is a multi-year project intended to provide a comprehensive solution for the provision of cloud services to the government, the defence system and other groups in the economy, as per the Israeli finance ministry. The four phases of the project include the acquisition and construction of cloud infrastructure, formulating government policy for migrating to the cloud, integration and migration, and control and optimisation of cloud activity. Amazon Web Services is also a part of the project. Protesters have said the cloud technology was being used against Palestinians, including for surveillance, and racial segregation. "As long as people are aware of this contract, there is nothing more powerful than people power. So what I would urge to people who aren't the decision makers in Google and people who don't make those top line decisions of keeping or dropping project numbers is that they should talk to their colleagues about it," Rami Abdelkarim, a Bay Area organiser, said during Tuesday's protest. Police in Nigeria said on Tuesday (August 29) that they raided a gay wedding in the southern Delta state. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the police in Delta stormed a hotel in Ekpan where the wedding was being held.

Police in Nigeria said on Tuesday (August 29) that they raided a gay wedding in the southern Delta state. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the police in Delta stormed a hotel in Ekpan where the wedding was being held. Initially, 200 people were arrested, but later 67 of them were detained after initial investigations, state police spokesperson Bright Edafe told reporters. Edafe said that homosexuality would never be tolerated in Nigeria. "The amazing part of it was that we saw two suspects, and there is a video recording where they were performing their wedding ceremony. We are in Africa and we are in Nigeria. We cannot copy the Western world because we don’t have the same culture," the police spokesperson further said and pointed out that the suspects would be charged in court at the end of the investigation. In a live broadcast of the suspects' parade by the police, one of the arrested said they were not attending the wedding ceremony and were at the hotel for another engagement. Another suspect said he does not identify as a gay person and was arrested while on his way to a fashion show. Amnesty International condemns arrests Amnesty International's Nigeria office condemned the arrest and called for an immediate end to this "witch-hunt." “In a society where corruption is rampant, this (same-sex) law banning same-sex relationships is increasingly being used for harassment, extortion and blackmail of people,” Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International's director in Nigeria, told the Associated Press. Nigeria is among the African countries which has enacted laws criminalising same-sex relationships. Arrests of gay people are common in the country with a prison sentence of up to 14 years under the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act. Accomplices face 10 years in prison. In the past, activists have accused the Nigerian police of using the same-sex prohibition law to carry out mass arrests that sometimes include straight people. Meta Platforms on Monday (August 28) rejected a recommendation from its oversight board that it suspend the account of Cambodia's former prime minister Hun Sen over allegations he used it to threaten opponents.

Meta Platforms on Monday (August 28) rejected a recommendation from its oversight board that it suspend the account of Cambodia's former prime minister Hun Sen over allegations he used it to threaten opponents. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Meta said that suspending accounts outside its regular enforcement framework would not be consistent with its policies, including "our protocol on restricting accounts of public figures during civil unrest." In June, the oversight board, which is funded by Meta but operates independently, advised that the company suspend Hun Sen's account for six months over a video that it said violated rules on violent threats. Meta said it agreed to take down the video but added it would respond to the board's recommendation to suspend Sen following a review. Intimidation using Facebook In the video from January, Sen, 71, said that those who accused his Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of buying votes in a local election last year should file a legal case, or face a beating from the party's supporters. Sen, who served as prime minister for 28 years before being replaced by his son Hun Manet last week, has been accused by human rights groups of using Facebook to intimidate political opponents and discourage criticism of his government. Sen's Facebook page, which he had temporarily stopped using, had a following of 14 million. Reuters reported that new content started to appear again just a few days after the election in July. The CPP won all but five of 125 lower house seats in the election, which was widely dismissed as a sham after the main opposition party was barred from running. On Tuesday, Meta's oversight board said that it stood by its decision and called on Facebook's parent company to "do everything in its power to deter public figures who exploit its platforms to incite violence". Meanwhile, Cambodia's ministry of post and telecommunications congratulated Facebook for its decision and reiterated that the Meta oversight board was still unwelcome. "They made bad recommendations, which were political in nature, and interfered with Cambodia's internal affairs," the ministry said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. New PM pledges to make Cambodia a 'high-income country' by 2050 Last Thursday (August 24), Cambodia's new Prime Minister Hun Manet pledged to make the kingdom a "high-income country" by 2050. "The next 25 years will be a new cycle for Cambodia," Manet said in a televised speech. Manet also said that the new strategy included improving healthcare and education, as well as addressing climate change. The stabbings at the two-day-long Notting Hill Carnival have reached the highest level in seven years, British media reported on Tuesday (August 29). In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said that there were eight non-fatal stabbings on Monday. The victims included a 29-year-old man who was in critical condition after he was stabbed at Warfield Road, just off Harrow Road. The man "is now in a serious, but stable condition," the statement added. "A 19-year-old man was stabbed in Ladbroke Grove shortly before 20:00hrs and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital," the statement said. The other six men aged 18, 19, 20, 25, 28 and 40 were stabbed in separate incidents and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The carnival was held from August 27-28. Fifty officers assaulted at carnival The Metropolitan Police also said on Tuesday that more than 50 officers were reported to be assaulted at the carnival. This included officers who were kicked, punched, spat on, bitten, head-butted and sexually assaulted. On Sunday, there were 110 arrests for offences including possession of offensive weapons, assaults including assaults on police officers, possession of drugs and sexual offences. "One man sustained a non-life-changing slash wound but declined the assistance of the emergency services," the statement further said. 'Carnival a challenging policing environment' Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, who oversaw the policing operation, said on Tuesday that the Notting Carnival was a challenging policing environment, adding that officers were asked to be vigilant but to be approachable, respectful and sensitive at the same time. “It is regrettable that for a second year in a row, Monday night at Carnival has been marred by serious violence," Adelekan said. “Nobody disputes the significance of Carnival on London’s cultural calendar and the overwhelming majority of those who came will have had a positive experience. However, we cannot overlook the stabbings, sexual assaults and attacks on police officers that we have seen," the police officer added. In a move that will bring respite to households across India battling recent food inflation, the central government has announced a $2.42 (Rs 200) reduction in cooking gas. Briefing reporters on the decision of the Union cabinet, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said the decision is a gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the women of the country on Onam and Raksha Bandhan. The meeting of the Union Cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Effective Wednesday, the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder will be reduced by $2.42 (Rs 200) across the country. In Delhi for instance, the decision will bring down the cost of a 14.2 kg cylinder from the existing $13.34 (Rs 1,103) per cylinder to $10.92 (Rs 903).

This across-the-board reduction is in addition to the existing targeted subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder to Ujjwala households, which will continue. Therefore, the effective price in Delhi for Ujjwala beneficiaries after this reduction will be $8.50 (Rs 703).

It may be noted that there are more than 31 crore domestic LPG consumers, including 9.6 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries.

Thakur said the current government has initiated several schemes for the development of women, including pucca houses, toilets, additional foodgrains and Direct Benefit Transfer during the Covid pandemic.

India is dependent on imports for 60 per cent of its natural gas requirements.

To clear pending Ujjwala applications and to provide deposit-free LPG connections to all eligible households, the government will shortly start distribution of PMUY connections to 75 lakh women from poor households. This will increase the total number of beneficiaries under PMUY to 10.35 crore.

The government said these decisions come as part of its ongoing efforts to ease the financial burden on citizens and promote the welfare of households.

Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, expressed happiness on the decision, stating, "We understand the challenges faced by households in managing their budgets. The reduction in cooking gas prices is aimed at providing direct relief to families and individuals, while also supporting the government’s larger goal of ensuring affordable access to essential items."

The Japanese environment ministry said on Sunday (August 27) that tests of seawater near the Fukushima nuclear power plant did not detect any radioactivity. Japan had started releasing water from the plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, sparking protests in the nation and neighbouring countries. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the government said that the water is safe after being filtered to remove most radioactive elements except for tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. The report said the ministry's tests of samples from 11 points near the plant showed concentrations of tritium below the lower limit of detection — 7 to 8 becquerels of tritium per litre. "It would have no adverse impact on human health and the environment," the ministry added. Speaking to Reuters, an official said the ministry would publish test results every week for the next three months at least. Citizens angry about discharge of water The Japanese government's decision to release water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant has angered citizens. Reuters reported that in early August, various organisations mobilised a petition-signing campaign in opposition to the discharge of contaminated water into the sea. As of Sunday, over 60,000 signatures had been collected from different regions across Japan. "The number of signatures on the Internet exceeded 60,000 yesterday, with over 50,000 signatures being added following the Cabinet's decision to move forward with the discharge on Tuesday," local media journalist Fujikura Hidekazu said. Hidekazu asserted that the government was blatantly disregarding the sentiments of residents, warning that the forced discharge would inevitably wreak havoc on vital industries such as agriculture and fisheries. "With the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water, both agriculture and fisheries will be pushed into a further state of crisis. Many fear that Fukushima's fishing industry will never be able to rebound," the journalist added. The call for a yatra, which was disrupted due to the clashes, was given on August 13. The VHP had said the procession would be taken out and asserted that there is no need to obtain permission for such religious events. India: Security tightened in Haryana's Nuh after govt denies permission for procession

A salt-free diet can reduce the risk of heart problems and strokes by almost 20 per cent. Citing a study, a report from The Guardian early Sunday (August 27) said researchers found that those who never add salt to meals were 18 per cent less likely to develop Atrial Fibrillation (AF), a heart condition, compared with those who always do. The report said that the number of people diagnosed with this heart condition has increased by 50 per cent in the last decade to 1.5 million.

Atrial Fibrillation causes an irregular often abnormally fast heart rate. People with this condition are five times more likely to have a stroke. “Our study indicates that lower frequency of adding salt to foods was associated with lower risk of AF.”

The findings

The study used data from the UK Biobank which involved over 500,000 people between the ages of 40 and 70 across the country from 2006 to 2010. The study said that those who already suffered from AF, coronary artery disease, heart failure or stroke were excluded.

The participants were asked how regularly they salted their meals from “never/rarely”, “sometimes”, “usually” or “always” do so. The study then tracked them over a period of 11 years to see how this affected them. Those who never salted their foods were 18 per cent less likely to suffer AF. And people who sometimes added salt to their meals were 15 per cent less likely to suffer from the condition.

The study further suggested that even those who switch from adding salt to “usually” adding it to their meals could see a big difference in their risk. Those in the usual group were 12% less likely to develop AF compared with those who “always” do so.
