Former UK culture minister Nadine Dorries has formally resigned as a Conservative MP and accused Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of "demeaning his office" by speaking out against her, British media reported. According to a report by The Guardian late Saturday (August 26), Dorries, who represents the Mid Bedfordshire constituency, said in her resignation, "I shall today inform the chancellor of my intention to take the Chiltern Hundreds, enabling the writ to be moved on September 4th for the byelection you are so desperately seeking to take place." The Treasury confirmed it was notified of her decision to step down. The report said that Dorries' resignation has opened the way for another awkward byelection for the Conservatives. The resignation letter In her resignation letter which was published in the Mail, Dorries accused Sunak of putting her personal safety at risk by whipping a public frenzy against her and disclosed that police had visited her house last week, warning her about a threat to her security. "What exactly has been done or have you (Sunak) achieved? You hold the office of prime minister unelected, without a single vote, not even from your own MPs," Dorries said. “You have no mandate from the people, and the government is adrift. You have squandered the goodwill of the nation, for what?,” she added. Sharpening her attack on Sunak, Dorries also said that the prime minister's actions around 200 of her MP colleagues to face an electoral tsunami and the loss of their livelihoods, because in his patience to become prime minister, Sunak put his personal ambition above the stability of the country and its economy. Dorries announced her intention to resign 11 weeks ago but remained as a member of parliament while she investigated why she was not given a seat in the upper house of parliament. Sunak's criticism of Dorries Prime Minister Sunak had recently criticised Dorries for failing to represent her constituents. According to a report by LBC, Sunak said, “I think people deserve to have an MP that represents them..." "It’s just making sure your MP is engaging with you, representing you, whether that’s speaking in parliament or being present in their constituencies doing surgeries, answering your letters," Sunak added. One being asked if his remarks meant that Dorries was failing her constituents, the prime minister said, "Well, at the moment people aren’t being properly represented." A migrant worker from India successfully sued his employers in Singapore for negligence after he fell off the back of an overcrowded lorry in 2021. A migrant worker from India successfully sued his employers in Singapore for negligence after he fell off the back of an overcrowded lorry in 2021. According to a report by CNN on Sunday (August 27), 37-year-old Ramalingam Murugan's lawyer Muhamad Ashraf Syed Ansarai said that the accident caused him immense pain. “He injured himself coming down from a lorry which was overcrowded – a simple thing that turned out to be risky,” Ansarai said. “But it is not uncommon for companies, especially those involved in heavy construction, to take risk assessments for granted,” he added. The accident On January 3, 2021, Murugan, who belongs to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, fractured his leg while disembarking from an overcrowded truck. Citing court documents, the report said that Murugan was ferried with at least 24 other workers on the back of the lorry from their dormitory to a work site and was the fourth to alight from the vehicle. It was raining that day. He testified in court that he was pushed by another worker who was in a hurry to seek shelter from the rain, causing him to lose his balance and fracturing his right leg. The 37-year-old underwent surgery and was on medical leave for five months. Last year, Murugan launched a lawsuit against Rigel Marine Services (his employer), seeking $73,500 in damages. Murugran argued that his employers failed to institute or enforce a safe system of transport for himself and other workers and did not carry out risk assessments to identify potential hazards. However, Rigel Marine Services denied the claims and said that the accident was caused by the man's own carelessness. The company also counter-claimed for the medical expenses and medical leave wages that had been paid to and for Murugan, CNN reported. Judge rules in favour of migrant construction worker District Judge Tan May Tee ruled in favour of Murugan despite the company's justification. Dee said there was a clear breach of duty by the company, adding that without proper supervision and the maintenance of some order or discipline in alighting, the man was pushed by his co-workers which resulted in him losing his balance and falling. She added that she found no contributory negligence on Murugan’s part, and there had been no way for him to avoid the accident as the vehicle was “not meant to carry more than 22 persons at the time.” In a statement released through his lawyer, Murugan said he was “looking forward to the closure of this matter, and hoped he gets a reasonable compensation for his injuries. Judge Tee, meanwhile, said the damages awarded to the man will be assessed at a later stage. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Migrant worker from India sues employers in Singapore seeking $73,500 in damages, and wins: Report

The Chinese navy has said that it is using the world's most powerful coil gun - a type of electromagnetically powered weapon capable of launching projectiles with very high speed and accuracy.

The Chinese navy has said that it is using the world's most powerful coil gun - a type of electromagnetically powered weapon capable of launching projectiles with very high speed and accuracy. Citing scientists involved in the project, a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Friday said that in a firing test revealed to the public for the first time, the electromagnetic launcher accelerated a 124kg projectile to a speed of 700km/h in less than 0.05 seconds This was the heaviest known projectile to be used in a coil gun experiment, the report added. It added that one of the closest competitors to the Chinese coil gun is a 120mm-calibre electromagnetic coil mortar test device at the Sandia National Laboratories in the United States. This coil gun in the US can fire a projectile weighing 18kg. What are coil guns? Coil guns feature a series of coils arranged along the barrel of the gun, each one constituting a stage. Each coil is energised one after another to create a magnetic field that can levitate and propel a projectile forward. The projectile typically stays suspended in the centre of the coil during launch. Such weapons can revolutionise the way that wars are fought. The larger a coil gun, the better its ability to fire projectiles similar to those fired by traditional artillery. As per the Chinese team led by Professor Guan Xiaocun with the Naval University of Engineering, these weapons have many advantages over traditional artillery, including higher launch speeds and a shorter preparation time. In a research paper published in the Transactions of China Electrotechnical Society earlier this month, Guan said that a coil gun has the potential for revolutionary breakthroughs in terms of speed, range, power, accuracy, safety, flexibility and reliability. “It is widely applicable in areas such as weapon systems, near-Earth satellites and high-speed missile launches,” the research paper added. Chinese navy testing world's most powerful coil gun: Report

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), an umbrella body of several Imphal-based civil society organisations, on Friday said that during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, its functionaries were encouraged to initiate peace dialogues with the Kuki community.

The organisation said that its delegation called on Shah in New Delhi and discussed various issues related to the state rocked by ethnic violence for nearly four months.

Following the meeting held in Shah’s residence, COCOMI leaders held deliberation with “top officials of the Intelligence Bureau, as per the Minister’s instructions,” the Imphal-based body said in a statement here.

“COCOMI was encouraged to initiate dialogues with responsible Kuki leaders and groups to facilitate problem-solving and peace-building,” the statement said.

The matters that came up for discussion with Shah include steps to stop infiltration into the northeastern state such as border fencing, territorial integrity of Manipur and ensuring that essential commodities reach all sections of the people.

“The Union Home Minister emphasised a firm stance against all forms of infiltration into Manipur’s territory. Measures are being implemented to register immigrants using biometrics, including retina scans,” the statement read.

There will be no allowance for separate administrations in Manipur, the COCOMI said.

Ten tribal MLAs belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi group in Manipur have urged the Centre to create a separate administration for their community in the wake of the violent clashes between the Meiteis and tribals. The legislators include seven leaders of the ruling BJP.

“Ensuring the movement and distribution of commodities in the state can be possibly realised with the support from both sides of the communities. Necessary deployment of convoys to secure the highways shall be ensured in a few days,” the COCOMI said.

Demanding adequate supplies of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo communities in hill areas of Manipur, a tribal group on August 22 imposed blockades on National Highway-37, connecting Manipur’s Imphal with Silchar of Assam, and NH-2, which links Imphal with Nagaland’s Dimapur. The police said the blockades were more or less cleared.

“The home minister appealed for peace in the state and requested COCOMI to convey this message to the people,” the statement said.

More than 160 people lost their lives and several hundreds were injured since the ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur on May 3, after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals — Nagas and Kukis — constitute little over 40 per cent and reside in the hill districts.

The biggest search for the Loch Ness Monster started in the Scottish Highlands on Saturday (August 26). According to a report by the news agency AFP, the expedition would deploy drones with thermal scanners, boats with infrared cameras and an underwater hydrophone. The searchers believe that the thermal scanners could prove crucial in identifying any strange anomalies in the murky depths. Alan McKenna from the Loch Ness Exploration said, "It's always been our goal to record, study and analyse all manner of natural behaviour and phenomena that may be more challenging to explain." An aquatic ancient monster The earliest written record of the monster dates back to AD 565 in a biography of the Irish monk, Saint Columba. As per the text, the monster attacked a swimmer and was about to strike again when Columba commanded it to retreat. In May 1933, a report in the Inverness Courier newspaper said that a couple e driving along a newly constructed lochside road saw "a tremendous upheaval" in the water. "There, the creature disported itself, rolling and plunging for fully a minute, its body resembling that of a whale, and the water cascading and churning like a simmering cauldron," the report said. In December same year, the Daily Mail recruited Marmaduke Wetherell, a big game hunter from South Africa to locate the sea serpent. Wetherell found large footprints that he believed belonged to "a very powerful soft-footed animal about 20 feet long". However, zoologists at London's Natural History Museum determined that the tracks were made with an umbrella stand or ashtray that had a hippopotamus leg as a base. In 1934, English physician Robert Wilson captured a photograph that seemingly depicted Nessie's head and elongated neck emerging from the water. The photo, which was published in Daily Mail, was later revealed to be part of a hoax. Over the years, scientists and amateur enthusiasts have tried to find evidence of a large fish living in the depths of the loch. Some have suggested the monster could be a prehistoric marine reptile like a plesiosaur. Paul Nixon, the general manager of the Loch Ness Centre that this weekend gave "an opportunity to search the waters in a way that has never been done before, and we can't wait to see what we find." Alabama is seeking to become the first American state to execute a prisoner by making him breathe pure nitrogen. On Friday (August 25), the Alabama attorney general's office asked the state Supreme Court to set an execution date for death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith, the news agency Associated Press reported on Saturday.

Alabama is seeking to become the first American state to execute a prisoner by making him breathe pure nitrogen. On Friday (August 25), the Alabama attorney general's office asked the state Supreme Court to set an execution date for death row inmate Kenneth Eugene Smith, the news agency Associated Press reported on Saturday. The court filing indicated the state's plans to put him to death by nitrogen hypoxia. Smith, 58, was one of the two men convicted in the 1988 murder-for-hire slaying of a preacher’s wife. Alabama's attorney general argued it was time to carry out the death sentence. “It is a travesty that Kenneth Smith has been able to avoid his death sentence for nearly 35 years after being convicted of the heinous murder-for-hire slaying of an innocent woman, Elizabeth Sennett,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said Friday in a statement. What is nitrogen hypoxia? Nitrogen hypoxia is caused by forcing the inmate to breathe only nitrogen, depriving of oxygen and causing death. The Associated Press report said that while proponents of the new method theorised it would be painless, opponents have likened it to human experimentation. Nitrogen hypoxia has been authorised in Alabama, Oklahoma and Mississippi. But these three states haven't used it to carry out a death sentence. Alabama authorised nitrogen hypoxia in 2018 amid a shortage of drugs used in lethal injections. The report also said that Alabama had attempted to execute Smith by lethal injection last year, but called off the execution because of problems inserting an IV into his veins. A day after the execution was aborted, Governor Kay Ivey announced a pause on executions to conduct an internal review of lethal injection procedures. ‘A terrible idea’ Slamming Alabama's proposal to execute Smith using nitrogen, the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal advocacy group said that the state has a history of “failed and flawed executions and execution attempts” and “experimenting with a never before used method is a terrible idea.” Angie Setzer, a senior lawyer, with the initiative, said, "No state in the country has executed a person using nitrogen hypoxia and Alabama is in no position to experiment with a completely unproven and unused method for executing someone." The United States and the European Union (EU) on Friday (August 25) hit out at comments of far-right Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that his right to life outweighed Palestinians’ right to freedom of movement in the occupied West Bank.

The United States and the European Union (EU) on Friday (August 25) hit out at comments of far-right Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that his right to life outweighed Palestinians’ right to freedom of movement in the occupied West Bank. According to a report by CNN, a US State Department spokesperson said that Washington strongly condemns "Gvir’s racist, destructive comments on the freedom of movement of Palestinian residents of the West Bank." The spokesperson added that such messages were particularly damaging when amplified by those in leadership positions. The EU, meanwhile, said, “All human beings are equal and should be treated the same way.” The racist claim On Wednesday, Gvir told Israel's Channel 12 that his right, his wife’s right and his children’s right to walk through the streets of the West Bank was “much more important” than “Arabs’ right to movement and travel. "Excuse me, Mohammed, but this is the reality. This is the truth. My right to life outweighs your right to move on the streets,” the minister said in reference to Palestinian-Israeli journalist Mohammed Magadli, who was present during the interview. Gvir spars with Bella Hadid over Palestinian rights Gvir's remarks during Wednesday's interview drew condemnation from supermodel Bella Hadid, whose father is a Palestinian. "In no place, no time, especially in 2023 should one life be more valuable than another's" Hadid said in a post on Instagram. On Friday, Gvir responded to Hadid's post, calling her an "Israel hater" and saying she had shared only a segment of the interview on her social media account to portray him as a racist. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Gvir's comments. In a statement, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel "allows maximum freedom of movement" for both Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank while implementing security measures to prevent Palestinian attacks. A second aircraft linked to Wager chief Yevgeny Prigozhin in media reports has no connection to the Russian mercenary group and has never had one, a report by the news agency Reuters said on Friday (August 25).

A second aircraft linked to Wager chief Yevgeny Prigozhin in media reports has no connection to the Russian mercenary group and has never had one, a report by the news agency Reuters said on Friday (August 25). A private jet carrying Prigozhin and other senior figures of Wagner crashed on Wednesday evening with no survivors. Some Russian media outlets reported that a second aircraft with the tail number RA-02748 was linked to Wagner and it was in the air at the time of the crash. Speaking to Reuters, Sergey Trifonov, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jetica LLC, said its aircraft had no link with Wagner. "Neither the plane itself nor its passengers are related to Wagner and never have been," Trifonov said. This plane had not been rented out, Trifonov said, though he declined to say who was its owner. Citing flight tracking data, Reuters reported that RA-02748 was landing in St. Petersburg on Wednesday evening on a flight from Moscow when the aircraft believed to be carrying Prigozhin crashed. It then took off back to Moscow about 20 minutes later. Absolute lie: Kremlin dismisses accusations of killing Prigozhin The Kremlin on Friday dismissed West's accusation that Prigozhin had been killed on its orders. Kremlin said that this accusation was an "absolute lie." "There is now a great deal of speculation surrounding this plane crash and the tragic deaths of the plane's passengers, including Yevgeny Prigozhin. Of course, in the West, all this speculation is presented from a well-known angle. All of this is an absolute lie, and it is necessary to rely exclusively on facts when covering this issue," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. "Yesterday, speaking on this topic, the president said he was waiting for the results of the investigation that would be finished in the near future and we would find out the details," Peskov added. Russian investigators have opened a probe into what happened, but have not yet said what they suspect caused the plane to suddenly fall from the sky, nor they have confirmed the identities of the 10 bodies recovered from the wreckage. The Brazilian police on Thursday (August 24) raided the home of former president Jair Bolsonaro's youngest son Renan in connection with a money-laundering investigation. Renan, 25, works as a staffer for a federal senator from Santa Catarina. In a statement, his lawyer Admar Gonzaga said that the 25-year-old's home in Balneario Camboriu was searched by the police, and a cell phone, hard drive, and notebooks were seized. Gonzaga said that Renan was surprised by the raid, adding, "He was not taken for questioning or subject to any other measures." Citing local media reports, the news agency AFP reported that raids also targeted Renan's shooting instructor, Maciel Carvalho, who is the main suspect in the investigation. Raids were also carried out in Brasilia. AFP reported that authorities were probing allegations of larceny, forgery, tax evasion, and money laundering in connection with suspected "ghost" companies. Renan faced police probe in 2021 In 2021, Renan faced a police investigation and was questioned over alleged bribes by business executives seeking government contracts. Jair Bolsonaro's other three sons have also faced legal headaches. Bolsonaro himself faces investigations over the alleged embezzlement of luxury jewelry and other expensive official gifts from foreign governments during his presidency as well as riots by supporters who refused to accept his 2022 election defeat to successor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. On August 19, police probed Bolsonaro's personal finances and communications. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized investigators to access confidential phone and bank records of Bolsonaro and his wife Michelle. Taking to Instagram, Michelle said, "Why break my banking and tax secrecy? Just ask me. It's becoming increasingly clear that this political persecution ... is aimed at tarnishing my family name and making me give up. They won't! I am at peace." Roark Capital is buying Subway, marking the end of over 50 years of family ownership of the sandwich chain. According to a report by CNBC on Thursday (August 24), Subway reportedly sought $10 billion, a price that alienated many potential suitors, leaving only private equity firms to duke it out in an auction.

The report said that Subway dwarfs all of them by number of restaurants, and brings in more annual sales than all but Dunkin Donuts. Through the holding company Inspire Brands, Roark owns Dunkin, Sonic, Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Baskin-Robbins and Jimmy John’s. The firm also owns Auntie Anne’s, Carvel, Cinnabon, Jamba, McAlister’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Schlotzsky’s.

Neil Saunders, a retail analyst and managing director of GlobalData analytics, said that Roark brings more to the table than other investors would have. "And while the deal closed based on cold hard cash, the outcome is a good one," Saunders added.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Subway's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Chidsey said that Roark has plans to keep the sandwich chain as a separate entity within its portfolio.

Subway started in 1965 as an Italian-style submarine sandwich shop. At present, it has nearly 37,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. In February, Subway hired JPMorgan to advise it on a possible sale.

In recent times, executives of the sandwich chain have highlighted cost-cutting efforts to better compete with other restaurant chains, while focusing most growth efforts overseas.

A Russian court on Thursday (August 24) extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich by three months. Gershkovich, a journalist with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), was arrested on March 29 in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on spying charges that carry sentence of up to 20 years in prison. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, the court extended his detention from August 30 to November 30.

The FSB said the WSJ journalist was collecting information about a Russian defence company that was a state secret, and the Kremlin said he was caught "red-handed" but has provided no detail to support the assertion.

The WSJ has rejected the spying charges and the United States has accused Russia of conducting "hostage diplomacy." US President Joe Biden said that the journalist's detention was totally illegal.

No date has been set for a trial. Gershkovich has so far failed in two appeals, in April and June, against his pre-trial detention in Moscow's Lefortovo prison, Reuters reported.

Since Gershkovich's arrest, US Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy has been allowed to visit him in prison only three times, most recently on August 14. The US has pledged to do "whatever it takes" to bring home Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan, convicted of espionage in 2020.

"Once again, we call for Russia to immediately release Evan and also to release wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Paul Whelan. Our efforts to secure their release are ongoing," a State Department spokesperson told Reuters.

The Carabinieri police have suspected two German tourists of spraying graffiti on exterior columns of the Vasari Corridor. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Wednesday (August 24), the director of Florence’s Uffizi Galleries called for stiff penalties against those who defaced the columns. The two German tourists, who were vacationing in Florence, scrawled the name of a German soccer club on the columns. The report said that an investigation was launched, adding no one was reported detained. In a statement, Italy's Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said that actions like these must not remain unpunished. “Now, let justice run its course,” Sangiuliano added. The minister earlier said that the vandals needed to understand "that even a small scratch will be prosecuted from now on.” 'A premeditated act' The Italian police examined the video to identify those responsible for the graffiti, which appeared overnight on the Arno River-facing side of the nearly kilometre-long (half-mile-long) corridor. “Clearly this is not a drunken whim, but a premeditated act,’’ Uffizi director Eike Schmidt said and called for harsh sanctions against those responsible, saying that in the United States, such cases could bring a prison term of five years. “Enough with symbolic punishments and imaginative extenuating circumstances. We need the hard fist of the law,’’ Schmidt added. As per Italian law, someone convicted of “aggravated damage,” which could apply to a vandalism case, risks a prison term as high as three years.
