Google Removes 17 'SpyLoan' Apps from Play Store. What are They?

Google recently deleted 17 SpyLoan apps from the Play Store with millions of downloads. A report by Slovak software company ESET said that these apps were designed to defraud users by offering them high-interest-rate loans and were endorsed with deceitful descriptions.

An Alarming Growth In Deceptive Android Apps

ESET said that since the start of 2023, there has been an alarming growth in deceptive Android loan apps, which present themselves as legitimate personal loan services, promising quick and easy access to funds.

SpyLoan apps falsely represent themselves as a legitimate financial service for personal loans, promising easy access to funds. This is done only to trick users into signing up for high-interest payments.
During the signup process, users' personal and financial details are also leaked.

The 17 apps are - AA Kredit, Amor Cash, GuayabaCash, EasyCredit, Cashwow, CrediBus, FlashLoan, PréstamosCrédito, Préstamos De Crédito-YumiCash, Go Crédito, Instantáneo Préstamo, Cartera grande, Rápido Crédito, Finupp Lending, 4S Cash, TrueNaira, and EasyCash.
These apps targeted users living in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The Biden administration is considering getting behind new restrictions on who can seek asylum and an expanded deportation process to secure new aid for Ukraine and Israel in a supplemental funding bill, a source familiar with discussions said.

The White House and US Congress are racing to strike a deal that would deliver military aid to the two allied nations while discouraging illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border with only a week until lawmakers depart for a Christmas break.

Republicans have refused to approve more Ukraine funding without additional measures to reduce the record number of migrants attempting to cross the US border illegally, leading to a complex negotiation pairing the largely unrelated issues.

President Joe Biden, a Democrat seeking reelection in 2024, said on Wednesday that he would be willing to make significant concessions on border security as Senate Republicans rejected a Democratic aid package with $20 billion in border funding.

The White House would be open to heightening the standard for initial asylum screenings, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, requesting anonymity to discuss the talks.

The Biden administration also would entertain some form of a "safe third country" provision that would deny asylum to migrants who pass through another country en route to the US, the source said.

Another possible point of agreement could be expanding a fast-track deportation process known as "expedited removal." The authority would be employed nationwide instead of its current application at the border, the source said.

A bipartisan group of senators trying to reach a deal are also discussing a numerical limitation on asylum claims, the source said. The Biden administration position on such a cap remains unclear.

White House spokesperson Angelo Fernandez Hernandez said Biden has made it clear "the border is broken" and that Congress should take action to fix it.

"The president has said he is open to compromise," he said in a statement.

The Republican-led House of Representatives is scheduled to wrap up work for the year by Dec. 14, leaving a tight window to pass legislation. The Democratic-led Senate faces a similar timeline.

With that in mind, the goal seems more to strike a top-line deal and perhaps work on the exact details of the legislative text over the break, sources said.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons said Thursday the gap between his party and Republicans remains "stubbornly large" but that he remains optimistic they can find common ground.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre criticized Republicans during a press briefing on Thursday.

"They are playing chicken with our national security," she said. "History will remember them harshly."

Republican Senator Thom Tillis, part of the bipartisan group trying to hash out a border security compromise, told reporters on Wednesday that any proposal would have to cut illegal immigration at least by half and that he did not know if a deal could be reached before Christmas.

"We’ve got a lot more work to do," he said.

Former Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, who was ousted from the position in July, reportedly died later that month either from suicide or torture. This shocking claim was made in a report by Politico on Wednesday (Dec 6).

Former Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, who was ousted from the position in July, reportedly died later that month either from suicide or torture. This shocking claim was made in a report by Politico on Wednesday (Dec 6). Two people with access to top Chinese officials told Politico that Qin died in late July in a military hospital in Beijing that treats top Chinese leaders. Qin was replaced by veteran diplomat Wang Yi as the foreign minister. Before this, Qin served as the Chinese ambassador to the United States and was also the country's vice minister. In 2014-2018, he became China's chief protocol officer, overseeing most of President Xi Jinping's interactions with foreign dignitaries between 2014 and 2018. Barely six months after becoming the foreign minister, Qin held meetings in Beijing on June 25 with the foreign ministers of Sri Lanka and Vietnam, as well as Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, the report said. Then he disappeared. A Stalin-like purge in China? The report of Qin's alleged death comes amid murmurs that President Xi has been going all out with a Stalin-like purge in China that started in 2012, removing millions of officials. The unexplained disappearance and removal of Qin Gang and Defence Minister Li Shangfu are some of the biggest examples of this purge. The Politico report said that other high-profile victims include the generals in charge of China’s nuclear weapons programme and some of the most senior officials overseeing the country's financial sector. Several of these officials apparently died in custody, the report added. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Rudenko, who met Qin in June in Beijing, reportedly told Xi that his foreign ministers and several top officers in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had been compromised by Western intelligence. An extra-marital affair After Qin disappeared, news started emerging of his alleged affair with a journalist with whom he reportedly fathered a son, who is a US citizen by default. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported in September that Qin had this extramarital affair when he was the ambassador to the US. According to Politico, the woman was Fu Xiaotian- who worked for Chinese broadcaster Phoenix TV. The report said that Fu attended Cambridge University - a traditional recruiting ground for British intelligence agencies. Fu was a student of Churchill College at the university. She first met Qin more than 10 years ago when he was posted to the Chinese embassy in London. In 2016, Churchill College named a garden after Fu in gratitude for her very rare series of generous gifts which reportedly added up to $314,671. Before Qin disappeared, Fu reportedly named him as the father of her child. In April, she flew back to Beijing and has not been heard from since, Politico further reported. The extra-marital affair and the illegitimate child born in the US might have been the main reasons for Qin's purge, the report said. However, the sources cited by Politico said that the real reason for Qin's abrupt disappearance was involvement in a scandal which involved the defence minister and generals who commanded China's rocket force. Rudenko had reportedly told Xi that Qin and relatives of top rocket force officers helped pass China's nuclear secrets to intelligence agencies in the West. (With inputs from agencies)

At least three rockets targeted the US embassy in Iraq's Baghdad on Friday (Dec 8). According to a report by the news agency AFP, an Iraqi security official said that the three Katyusha rockets landed on the outskirts of the district housing government and diplomatic buildings.

Speaking to AFP, a US military official, who chose to remain anonymous, said that alarms had gone off and that "likely impact sounds" could be heard near the US embassy and Union III base, where troops from the international anti-jihadist coalition are stationed.

"We are still awaiting official reports regarding casualties and damage to infrastructure, if any. We are also awaiting official reporting on the type of attack," the official said.

The embassy urged the Iraqi government to protect its diplomats. "We again call on the government of Iraq... to protect diplomatic and coalition partner personnel and facilities," an embassy spokesperson said in a statement.

This is the first attack against the US embassy in Iraq since the Israel-Hamas war started on Oct 7. Since mid-October, there have been several rocket or drone strikes by pro-Iran groups against American or coalition forces, mainly in Syria.

Friday's attack came a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said during a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Baghdad rejected "any attack on Iraqi territory."

According to a statement from Sudani's office, he also said that the government was committed to ensuring the safety of the international coalition advisers present in Iraq.

Google has deleted 17 SpyLoan apps from the Play Store with millions of downloads. Google has deleted 17 SpyLoan apps from the Play Store with millions of downloads. According to a report by Slovak software company ESET on Tuesday (Dec 5), since the beginning of this year, the company observed an alarming growth of deceptive Android loan apps, which present themselves as legitimate personal loan services, promising quick and easy access to funds. "Despite their attractive appearance, these services are in fact designed to defraud users by offering them high-interest-rate loans endorsed with deceitful descriptions, all while collecting their victims’ personal and financial information to blackmail them, and in the end gain their funds," the report said. ESET, therefore, recognised these apps using the detection name SpyLoan, which directly refers to their spyware functionality combined with loan claims. What are SpyLoan apps? SpyLoan apps falsely represent themselves as a legitimate financial service for personal loans, promising easy access to funds, a report by Dark Reading said. This is done only to trick users into signing up for high-interest payments. During the signing-up process, the threat actors also collect the personal and financial details of the victims to blackmail them. Victims of these apps have said that the annual cost of loans offered (on these apps) is much higher than stated, and the loan tenure is shorter. These loans are marketed through SMS messages and social media. Which apps have been deleted? Google has deleted 17 apps from the Play Store. These are AA Kredit, Amor Cash, GuayabaCash, EasyCredit, Cashwow, CrediBus, FlashLoan, PréstamosCrédito, Préstamos De Crédito-YumiCash, Go Crédito, Instantáneo Préstamo, Cartera grande, Rápido Crédito, Finupp Lending, 4S Cash, TrueNaira, and EasyCash. ESET said these apps targeted users living in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. "As an ADA (App Defense Alliance) member, ESET identified 18 SpyLoan apps and reported them to Google, who subsequently removed 17 of these apps from their platform. These apps had a total of more than 12 million downloads from Google Play before their removal. The final app listed changed its behaviour; ESET therefore no longer detects it as a SpyLoan app," the company said in its report.

GTA VI's First Trailer Unveiled: Here's What We Know So Far

Rockstar Games released the much-awaited trailer of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI a day earlier than its scheduled Dec 5 release after the video was leaked online. The video has generated millions of views on Rockstar Games' social media platforms, including YouTube, in just a few hours.

The first trailer features car crashes, alligators and scantily dressed people cavorting around a fictional version of Miami as Tom Petty’s thumping song Love Is a Long Road plays in the background. GTA VI introduces a protagonist duo (a woman named Lucia and an unnamed man) with a relationship similar to Bonnie and Clyde. Social media posting and online streaming are potentially part of the gameplay.

GTA VI's urban landscape is quite similar to the legendary GTA Vice City. Rockstar Games said the game heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.

GTA VI will be on the shelves in 2025, ending a decade-long speculation about the game's release among the global gaming community.

A disturbing video has emerged that shows an Israeli lawyer being kidnapped by Hamas militants during the Oct 7 attack. According to a report by the New York Post on Monday (Dec 4), a local Israeli news channel aired a snippet of 40-year-old Amit Soussana’s abduction. The video showed Soussana flanked by several Hamas militants marching outside of her house in Kibbutz Kfar Azza. Soussana struggled to escape the group, but one of the militants propped her over his shoulder to try and get her to be still. However, the lawyer flailed around and kicked another militant trying to grab her legs. Hamas didn't want women hostages to reveal treatment: US A United States official said on Monday that Hamas did not want women hostages to reveal their treatment under the Palestinian militant group's captivity, as it did not want them to speak publicly about sexual violence. "It seems one of the reasons they don't want to turn women over that they've been holding hostage and the reason this pause fell apart is they don't want those women to be able to talk about what happened to them during their time in custody," US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters. "There is very little that I would put beyond Hamas when it comes to its treatment of civilians and particularly its treatment of women," he added. A bomb disposal team in Wales' Milford Haven detonated an old missile which was kept as a garden ornament by a couple, British media reported on Sunday (Dec 3). According to a report by the BBC, Sian and Jeffrey Edwards thought that the missile was a dummy bomb with no charge. The missile, which is thought to date back to the 19th century, was kept outside the Edwards' house. Speaking to BBC, Sian said she used to bang her trowel on the bomb to remove earth after gardening. Last Wednesday, a police officer told the couple that he spotted the bomb and would need to alert the defence ministry. An hour after the bomb was spotted, the couple was told the bomb squad would arrive the next day. 'Didn't sleep a wink all night' Jeffrey told the network he and Sian did not sleep a wink on Wednesday night. “I told the bomb disposal unit: ‘We’re not leaving the house, we’re staying here. If it goes up, we’re going to go up with it.,” he added. The report said that the missile was live but with only a tiny amount of charge. The missile was taken to a disused quarry in Walwyn's Castle, covered with five tonnes of sand and detonated, the report said. "It was an old friend. I'm so sorry that the poor old thing was blown to pieces," Edwards said. He added that he was told the history of the missile by the Morris family, whose relative used to own the house. The family said the missile was discovered more than 100 years ago. "We can confirm that on 30 Nov 23, Ashchurch Troop, 721 EOD Sqn, 11 EOD&S Regt RLC, responded at the request of Dyfed-Powys Police to a suspect item of ordnance," the defence ministry said. The ministry said that the item was assessed and determined to be a 64lb naval projectile which was removed from the scene for subsequent explosive demolition. (With inputs from agencies)
