A recent study has suggested that most people who regularly work night shifts suffer from some kind of sleep disorder, including insomnia. In the study, which was published in Frontiers in Psychiatry on Dec 7, researchers from the Netherlands and Belgium collected work and sleep data from 37,662 individuals. "In this cross-sectional study, prevalence rates of short sleep (≤6 h), long sleep (≥9 h) and sleep disorders (screened with Holland Sleep Disorders Questionnaire), and associations between these sleep variables and socio-demographics (age, sex, education, living companion(s)) were analyzed using binominal logistic regression analyses," the study said. "Shift work is related not only to curtailed sleep and shift work disorder but also to a plethora of sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders and sleep-related movement disorders," it added. The findings Researchers said that in the total sample, all socio-demographic factors affected prevalences of short, long, and disordered sleep, consistent with previous studies. "Compared to day workers, shift workers more frequently reported short sleep, most prominently night workers (26 vs. 50%) (p < 0.001)," the researchers said. Six common sleep disorder categories were screened for the surveys - insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia, sleep-related breathing disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, and circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders. Also read: Here's how Artificial Intelligence can help modern-day Goldilocks get a good night's sleep "In night shift workers the level of education had the strongest associations with disturbed sleep with a two-fold higher prevalence of short and disordered sleep in low relative to academic educated groups (all p < 0.02)," the study further said. Over a quarter of regular night-shift workers (26 per cent) reported more than two or three sleep disorders, and 51 per cent of people working such shifts tested positive for at least one sleep disorder. Rotational shifts suggested Professor Marike Lancel from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands told Science Alert, "We showed that compared to working regular shifts during daytime hours, working other shift types is associated with a higher occurrence of disordered sleep, particularly in rotating and regular night shift work." The researchers suggested that rotational shifts were generally advised, particularly fast-forward rotating work schedules, with "night work as short as possible and plenty of resting days in between to recover from the accumulated sleep deficit." "To prevent sleep curtailment and sleep disorders, employers/occupational health practitioners should encourage good sleep health and give tools to deal with shift work as well as possible, both promoting optimal sleep during the resting period and wakefulness during working hours," they added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the Supreme Court's verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 (which conferred special status to Jammu and Kashmir) by saying the court upheld the sovereignty and integrity of India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed the Supreme Court's verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 (which conferred special status to Jammu and Kashmir) by saying the court upheld the sovereignty and integrity of India. In his blog published on Tuesday (Dec 12), Prime Minister Modi said that the Supreme Court rightly observed that his government's decision taken on August 5, 2019, was done with the purpose of enhancing constitutional integration and not disintegration. On Monday, the Supreme Court said that Article 370 was only temporary. A five-judge constitution bench of the court unanimously upheld the validity of the Modi government's 2019 decision to abrogate the article. "It can be garnered from the historical context for the inclusion of Article 370 and the placement of Article 370 in Part XXI of the Constitution that it is a temporary provision," the bench said. Modi said that the court's verdict strengthened the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’. Here are the top points from PM's blog: > Prime Minister Modi said on Tuesday that Article 370 and Article 35 (A) (which empowered the J&K legislature to define Kashmir's permanent residents and their special rights and privileges) were major obstacles. Both these articles ensured that the people of Jammu and Kashmir never got the rights and development that the rest of their fellow Indians got, Modi said. > "Due to these Articles, a distance was created between people belonging to the same nation. Due to this distance, many people from our nation who wanted to work to solve the problems of Jammu and Kashmir were unable to do so even if they clearly felt the pain of the people there," Modi said. Also read | Explained: Article 370 - How India Supreme Court answered key questions on Kashmir special status > Modi said he had observed the Kashmir issue closely over the last several decades. "I had a nuanced understanding of the specifics and the complexities of the issue. Yet, I was crystal clear about one thing- that the people of Jammu and Kashmir want development and they want to contribute to the development of India based on their strengths and skills. They also want a better quality of life for their children, a life free from violence and uncertainty," he said. > The Modi government gave primacy to three pillars while serving the Union Territory- understanding the citizens' concerns, building trust through supportive actions, and prioritising development, development and more development. > The prime minister further said that to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir's development journey, "our Government ministers would frequently go there and interact with people directly." Modi pointed out that these frequent visits played a crucial role in building goodwill in the Union Territory. Also read: What does Justice SK Kaul's separate 'sentimental' ruling on Article 370 intend to achieve? > "From May 2014 to March 2019, over 150 ministerial visits took place. This is a record in itself. The special package of 2015 was a significant step in addressing the developmental needs of Jammu and Kashmir. It contained initiatives for infrastructure development, job creation, tourism promotion and support to the handicraft industry," he said. > "The historical day of 5th August is etched in the hearts and minds of every Indian. Our Parliament passed the historic decision to abrogate Article 370. Since then, much has changed in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. The judicial court verdict came in December 2023 but seeing the wave of development across Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, the people’s court have given a resounding thumbs up to the Parliament’s decision of abolishing Articles 370 and 35(A) for four years now," he further said.

Artificial Intelligence To Be The Future of Conflicts?

Artificial Intelligence (AI), one of the most widely talked about topics this year, is slowly entering in the fields of education, healthcare, manufacturing and other such sectors. However, now, AI will also impact wars fought between countries, according to a report in The Conversation.

Recently, reports emerged that Israel was using an AI system called Habsora to select targets in its war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The system had been used to find targets for bombing, link locations to Hamas operatives and estimate the likely numbers of civilian deaths in advance.

The Conversation report said the advantages can make soldiers more efficient, and likely enhance the speed and lethality of warfare. AI systems also have the potential to reshape the character of war, making it easier to enter into a conflict.

AI can contribute to disinformation, creating and amplifying dangerous misunderstandings during a conflict. Another problem with such systems could be differentiating between combatants and civilians while launching airstrikes.

Astronomers have detected the oldest black hole ever observed, with around a million times the mass of the Sun. Citing observations published in Arxiv, a report by The Guardian on Sunday (Dec 10) said that the black hole dates back more than 13 billion years to the dawn of the universe. The observations, made by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), reveal it to be at the heart of a galaxy 440 million years after the big bang. The observations of the GN-z11 galaxy, push the origins of this mystery back to black holes’ infancy and suggest that they were either born big or ballooned extremely rapidly early on, the report said. There is no direct image of the black hole captured, which is unseeable as no light can escape it. However, astronomers found telltale signatures of its accretion disk, the halo of gas and dust that swirls around the cosmic sinkhole. A puzzle that seems to be deepening Professor Roberto Maiolino, an astrophysicist at the University of Cambridge, who led the observations, said, “The surprise is in it being so very massive. That was the most unexpected thing.” Also read: A strange star near Milky Way's black hole may have extra-galactic origin: Study Professor Andrew Pontzen from University College London (UCL), who was not involved in the research, said the observations suggested that some black holes instead grew at a tremendous rate in the young universe, far faster than expected. "Understanding where the black holes came from in the first place has always been a puzzle, but now that puzzle seems to be deepening," Professor Pontzen told the publication. The observations are the latest in a series of stunning discoveries by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) space observatory. What is a black hole? According to NASA, a black hole is an astronomical object with a gravitational pull so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape it. Its surface is called the event horizon which defines the boundary where the velocity needed to escape exceeds the speed of light, which is the speed limit of the cosmos. "Two main classes of black holes have been extensively observed. Stellar-mass black holes with three to dozens of times the Sun’s mass are spread throughout our Milky Way galaxy, while supermassive monsters weighing 100,000 to billions of solar masses are found in the centres of most big galaxies, ours included," NASA said. Once formed, black holes can grow by accreting matter that falls into them, including gas stripped from neighbouring stars and even other black holes. (With inputs from agencies)

The Israel-Hamas war, which is intensifying with each passing day, has ignited tensions in many university campuses across the United States. Two universities in particular - Harvard and UPenn (University of Pennsylvania) have been in the spotlight for rising antisemitism on campus after the war started on October 7. Last Tuesday (Dec 5), lawmakers launched an investigation into antisemitism at Harvard, UPenn, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) over whether student protests calling for the genocide of Jews amounted to harassment. Harvard President Claudine Gay, UPenn President Liz Magill who resigned later, and MIT President Sally Kornbluth were grilled during a hearing in the House of Representatives on whether pro-Palestinian student activists calling for "Jewish genocide" violated their codes of conduct on harassment, but all three equivocated, claiming it would depend on the context. Also read: University of Pennsylvania president steps down amid antisemitism backlash on campus The trio gave long, legalistic, and seemingly evasive answers at the hearing. Since the conflict started, hate crimes targeting Jews and Muslims also increased in the US. With tensions spreading in universities, a broader debate has taken place about the boundaries between freedom of speech and deeply offensive, even inflammatory language. The criticism and calls to resign Harvard The presidents of all three universities (Harvard, MIT, and UPenn) were severely criticised over the antisemitism row. According to a report by the news agency AFP, donors at Harvard called for President Claudine Gay to offer more explicit support for Israel and condemnation of student groups who have voiced support for the Palestinian people. There were also calls for Gay to step down from the top post. Last Tuesday, Gay testified before the House Education Committee at a hearing dedicated to holding campus leaders accountable for antisemitic incidents. At the hearing, Republican lawmaker Elise Stefanik likened student calls for a new intifada to inciting "genocide against the Jewish people in Israel and globally." When Stefanik asked Gay if such calls would violate the university's code of conduct, the Harvard president replied, "We embrace a commitment to free expression even of views that are objectionable, offensive, hateful. When speech crosses into conduct that violates our policies, including policies against bullying, harassment or intimidation, we take action." Also read: Explained | Islamophobia, antisemitism, Xenophobia: The many faces of hate in the US The Republican lawmaker called on Gay to immediately resign while Republican Senator Ted Cruz called the comments "disgraceful." Two days later, Gay apologised for her remarks. "What I should have had the presence of mind to do in that moment was return to my guiding truth, which is that calls for violence against our Jewish community -- threats to our Jewish students -- have no place at Harvard, and will never go unchallenged," she told The Harvard Crimson. UPenn Last Saturday, UPenn's President Liz Magill voluntarily tendered her resignation following her criticism during Tuesday's hearing. On Tuesday, Stefanik asked the same question to Magill if the calling of genocide violated university rules or codes of conduct, Magill said, "If the speech turns into conduct, it can be harassment, yes." "I am asking, specifically calling for the genocide of Jews, does that constitute bullying or harassment?" the Republican lawmaker pressed on. "If it is directed and severe, pervasive, it is harassment," Magill said. "So the answer is yes," Stefanik queried. Also read: NYU students seen tearing down posters of young Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas. Watch! "It is a context-dependent decision, congresswoman," Magill responded. After hearing similar answers from others, Stefanik told Magill, "It does not depend on the context. The answer is yes, and this is why you should resign." Though she stepped down, Magill would stay in her post until an interim president was appointed and would remain on the faculty of the university's law school. Apart from Magill, UPenn's board of trustees Scott Bok also announced his resignation. MIT Just like her counterparts at Harvard and UPenn, MIT President Sally Kornbluth faced calls to quit following last Tuesday's hearing. During the hearing, Kornbluth, the only Jewish university president to testify, said, "I know some Israeli and Jewish students feel unsafe on campus.” "As they bear the horror of the Hamas attacks and the history of antisemitism, these students have been pained by chants in recent demonstrations,” she said. Later in the hearing, Kornbluth also advocated for increased Holocaust education as an antidote to antisemitism. A report by the Times of Israel said that at MIT, critics from both sides of the Israel-Palestine debate went after Kornbluth for partially suspending students who participated in a disruptive pro-Palestinian protest on campus. However, her action was not a topic of discussion during the hearing. “The MIT administration, namely President Sally Kornbluth, has failed to address the crisis of rampant antisemitism on campus,” Jewish MIT graduate student Talia Khan told the publication. A rock-salt mine of petrochemicals giant Braskem located in the northeastern coastal city of Maceio (the capital of Alagoas state) partially ruptured on Sunday (Dec 10), after officials warned that the mine was at risk of imminent collapse.

A rock-salt mine of petrochemicals giant Braskem located in the northeastern coastal city of Maceio (the capital of Alagoas state) partially ruptured on Sunday (Dec 10), after officials warned that the mine was at risk of imminent collapse. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, authorities said that people had previously been evacuated. Maceio Mayor João Henrique Caldas said the mine was expected to stabilise following the partial collapse. Caldas also said that authorities would continue fighting and demanding responsibility from Braskem, which is the big one responsible for damages. As per the report, the partial rupture of the mine came as no surprise to the Maceio's residents, where Braskem's 40 years of rock salt mining caused the displacement of tens of thousands of people. Apart from mine 18 which partially ruptured, Braskem has said it is in the process of filling eight other cavities with sand. On Nov 28, the company alerted officials of the imminent risk the mine could collapse. Two days later, Alagoas Governor Paulo Dantas warned of the possible “formation of large craters” following the mine’s collapse and said federal teams would arrive that night as backup. Residents were ordered not to travel near the area. The updates that scared residents In the first few days after Braskem issued a warning, the company sent out regular updates, including possible times at which the mine could collapse. These updates scared residents. Speaking to the Associated Press on Dec 1, resident Carlos Eduardo, a student at the Alagaos Federal University, said, "It caused the population to be in terror, unable to sleep, worried." Rock salt mining is a process of extracting salt from deep underground deposits. Once the extraction has been done, the cavities left behind can collapse, causing the soil above to settle. Structures built on top of such areas can topple. The report said that from 1979 to 2019 when Braskem announced the shutdown of its rock salt operations in Maceio, the company operated a total of 35 mines. Troubles in the coastal city started a year earlier when large cracks first appeared on the surface. The first order to evacuate some areas was issued in 2019. Since then, five neighbourhoods in the city turned into ghost towns as residents accepted Braskem’s payouts to relocate. Meanwhile, the Brazilian Senate said that around 200,000 people in Maceio were affected by the company’s mining activities. (With inputs from agencies)

'Don't encourage throwing shoes, but...' Congress leader V D Satheesan, who is also the leader of the opposition in Kerala, condemned Sunday's incident by saying that throwing shoes was not a democratic way of protest and it was an emotional outburst. "We will not encourage such acts," Satheesan said. However, he pointed out that CM Vijayan was making a mockery of the police department "by charging an attempt to murder case for just throwing a shoe." The report further said that the KSU denied certain news reports that it would continue throwing shoes as part of a protest and said it was not a democratic manner of protest. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has come up with an interesting finding. It has revealed that a box-shaped cloud of opaque dust, which lies at the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy, is not just made up of gas, a study on Monday (Dec 4) said. The cloud- nicknamed 'the Brick' is also littered with frozen carbon monoxide, the study published in the Astrophysics Journal said on Monday (Dec 4).

"We catalogue 56,146 stars detected in all six filters using the crowdsource package. Stars within and behind The Brick exhibit prodigious absorption in the F466N filter that is produced by a combination of CO ice and gas," the study said.

"In support of this conclusion, and as a general resource, we present models of CO gas and ice and CO2 ice in the F466N, F470N, and F410M filters. Both CO gas and ice contribute to the observed stellar colours," it added.

According to a report by CNN, the study's findings could have drastic implications on how scientists analyse the region in future. The report said that more carbon dioxide inside the Brick could dramatically change how researchers study and measure dark clouds in the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Adam Ginsburg, an astronomer at the University of Florida, said that people are now close to understanding what is happening inside the brick and where the mass is.

Ginsburg and his fellow researchers gained access to the JWST data in September last year. Being the most powerful space telescope ever built, JWST could offer never-before-seen insights into the Brick.

However, Ginsburg and his team found that the data needed a lot of work, CNN reported.

The researchers spent months cleaning up the data, orienting it to line up correctly with the existing maps of the sky. As they peered at the Brick, they found the images from the space telescope were turning out the wrong colour.

“All the stars were coming out a bit too blue,” Ginsburg told the network. This prompted researchers to wonder if there was something wrong with the data.

However, the University of Florida astronomer said, the problem was with their assumptions. The study said researchers had not expected there to be so much carbon monoxide ice, which caused the colour change.
