The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday (March 1) that Americans who test positive for Covid would no longer need to stay in isolation for five days.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday (March 1) that Americans who test positive for Covid would no longer need to stay in isolation for five days. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the CDC said that people can return to work or regular activities if their symptoms are mild and improving and it’s been a day since they’ve had fever. The decision comes as the pandemic is no longer a public health menace it was earlier. The US had been one of the worst-affected countries. The report said that most citizens have some degree of immunity to the virus from vaccinations or infections. Experts said that many people were not following the five-day isolation guidance anyway. CDC's Director Dr Mandy Cohen said, "Our goal here is to continue to protect those at risk for severe illness while also reassuring folks that these recommendations are simple, clear, easy to understand, and can be followed." Also read | Research finds connection between long Covid brain fog and leaky blood vessels The CDC originally advised 10 days of isolation, but in late 2021 cut it to five days for people who were infected and had no symptoms or only brief illnesses. A look at the new guidelines As per the CDC, if you have symptoms, stay home until they are mild and improving and it’s been a day since you’ve had fever. You can remain cautious by wearing a mask and keeping a distance from others. The CDC has emphasised that people should still try to prevent getting infected with Covid in the first place, by getting vaccinated, washing hands, and taking steps to bring in more outdoor fresh air. Also watch | New Covid vaccine study links jab to heart and brain conditions × The agency's guidelines for workers at nursing homes and other healthcare facilities have not changed, the report added. The concerns Some experts have expressed concerns about the CDC's decision. They worry that a change in isolation rules may increase the risk of infection for older people and others who are more vulnerable to getting seriously ill. Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University’s School of Public Health, said, "My biggest worry in all of this is that employers will take this change in guidance to require employees to come back to work ... before they are ready to before they feel well enough, and before they are not likely to pose harm to their co-workers." Two convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case have approached the Supreme Court urging it to refer the matter of their pre-mature release from jail to a larger bench, as two different benches passed different orders.

Radheshyam Bhagwandas Shah and Rajubhai Babulal Soni filed petition saying that the apex court's January 8 verdict which led to the cancellation of their remission (early release from prison) and their re-imprisonment was judicially improper.

On January 8, the Supreme Court had struck down the Gujarat government's order granting remission to 11 convicts who had gangraped Bilkis Bano and murdered her family members during the 2002 Godhra riots.

In their plea, they have mentioned that two different co-ordinate benches of an equal number of judges have taken a different view of the case.

"Issue direction clarifying and directing which judgment of its co-ordinate bench would be applicable in the facts and circumstances of the case i.e. one which has been delivered in the case," it said.

As per the plea, the January 8 judgment delivered by Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan has "not only judicial impropriety but creates uncertainty and chaos as to which precedence of law has to be applied in future."

It was incorrect in law for the two-judge bench led by Justice Nagarathna to overrule a judgment rendered by another two judge-bench of the Supreme Court, namely Justices Ajay Rastogi and Vikram Nath, said the plea.

It is to be noted that the May 13, 2022 judgment rendered by the Justice Rastogi-led bench had held that the State of Gujarat (and not the Maharashtra government) was the appropriate government to decide on remission applications filed by the rape convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.

Thereafter, the Gujarat government decided to allow the remission applications of convicts. The decision was challenged by Bilkis Bano and others in the top court.

The bench led by Justice Nagarathna had found that the May 2022 judgment was secured by Radheshyam after misleading the court and suppressing key facts.

It had held that the judgment of May 13, 2022, by which another bench of the apex court had directed the Gujarat government to consider remission of a convict as per the 1992 policy, was obtained by "playing fraud" on the court and by suppressing material facts.

Justice Nagarathna led-bench in January this year had held that Gujarat government was not competent to pass the remission orders but Maharashtra government. It had said the appropriate government to decide the remission was the State (in this case Maharashtra) within whose territorial limits the accused are sentenced and not where the crime is committed or the accused are imprisoned.

"In view of conflicting judgment on the same issue by bench of equal numbers of judges, the matter must be referred to a larger bench for final adjudication and proper determination on law and merits of the case," the plea filed through advocate Rishi Malhotra stated.

United States (US) presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday (Mar 4) called for immunity for any US president after he won the Colorado ballot disqualification case at the US Supreme Court.

United States (US) presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday (Mar 4) called for immunity for any US president after he won the Colorado ballot disqualification case at the US Supreme Court. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court overturned a judicial decision that had excluded Trump from Colorado's ballot under a constitutional provision involving insurrection for inciting and supporting the 2021 Capitol Hill riots. The justices unanimously reversed a December 19 decision by Colorado's top court to kick Trump off the state's Republican primary ballot on Tuesday after finding that the Constitution's 14th Amendment disqualified him from again holding public office. The ruling was issued on the eve of Super Tuesday, the day in the US presidential primary cycle when most states hold party nominating contests. Trump hails SC ruling in Colorado case Addressing the media, Trump hailed the Supreme Court's ruling. "I want to start by thanking the Supreme Court for its unanimous decision today. It was a very important decision, were very well crafted, and I think it will go a long way toward bringing our country together, which our country needs," Trump said from Mar-a-Lago. And it has nothing to do with the fact that it's the leading candidate, whether it was the leading candidate or a candidate that was well down on the totem pole. You cannot take somebody out of a race," he added. "The voters can take the person out of the race very quickly. But a court shouldn't be doing that. And the Supreme Court saw that very well," the 77-year-old Republican added. 'If a president doesn't have full immunity...' "While most states were thrilled to have me, there were some that did not and they did not want that because of political reasons, they did not want that because of poll numbers. We are beating President Biden in almost every poll," he further said. Calling for immunity for a US president, Trump, the 45th president, said, "If a president doesn't have full immunity, you really don't have a president because nobody that is serving in that office will have the courage to make in many cases the right decision or it could be in some cases the wrong decision. But, they have to make decisions and they have to make them free of all terror that can be reigned upon them when they leave office or even before they leave office." Roy, 67, an MLA from West Bengal's Baranagar said he quit as he felt he was not respected in the party. Roy submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee and said he had already put in his papers on March 1 for the multiple party and state government positions he held. Roy hits out at Mamata Banerjee He said that TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "stood in the assembly and said that the ED was targeting Shajahan Sheikh. The 67-year-old further expressed gratitude for opposition party leaders who reached out to him during the raids. "Fifty-two days have passed since the raids, yet I haven’t received a single phone call from the supreme leader (Mamata Banerjee) offering her reassurance,” he further said. TMC dismisses Roy's allegations The TMC dismissed Roy's allegations as baseless, and said that the 67-year-old was exerting “undue pressure for a ticket” from the North Kolkata seat for the upcoming elections. The TMC also questioned the timing of his resignation and pointed out his history of shifting party allegiance. “For quite some time, Roy was making baseless allegations against party leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay. He was trying to exert pressure by using several undue means. He was trying to blackmail the party for a ticket from the North Kolkata seat. Now, he may join the BJP,” senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee. Speaking to PTI, TMC sources said that the party got in touch with Roy just two days after the ED raids. (With inputs from agencies)

Citing a government statement, a report by the news agency Reuters on Monday said that to restore order, the government has imposed curfew with immediate effect throughout the West territory for a "renewable period of seventy-two hours." The curfew will apply between six in the evening and five in the morning from Sunday to Wednesday, the statement said. It added that law enforcement officers, firefighters, ambulance drivers, health personnel and duly identified journalists would not be required to comply with the curfew. Violence, damaged communications, prison breaks The government's instructions came after a dramatic escalation of violence over the weekend paralysed parts of Port-au-Prince, damaged communications and led to two prison breaks. Morning brief: Protests against US aid airdrop in Gaza; Trump wins Republican caucuses in 3 US states

Former United States president and current presidential hopeful Donald Trump inched closer in his quest to become the Republican Party's presidential nominee after he won internal party elections in Missouri, Michigan, and Idaho on Saturday (Mar 2). According to a report by the news agency AFP, Trump, 77, has now won every state nominating contest heading into next week's "Super Tuesday," when voters in 15 US states choose their preferred candidate for each party. The internal elections in Missouri, Michigan, and Idaho had differing rules, in some cases reflecting rifts and tensions despite Trump's formidable sway. Missouri In Missouri, Trump swamped his main rival, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, winning every county caucus in the state. A report by the news agency Associated Press said that voters lined up outside a church in Columbia before the caucus began. Once they got inside, they heard appeals from supporters of the candidates. There was little discussion between caucus goers after they picked a side. Trump had prevailed twice under Missouri’s old presidential primary system. Michigan In Michigan, Republicans at their convention in Grand Rapids began allocating 39 of the state’s 55 GOP presidential delegates. Trump won all 39 delegates allocated. However, a significant portion of the Republican Party's grassroots force was skipping the gathering due to the lingering effects of a months-long dispute over the party’s leadership. Trump handily won Michigan primary this past Tuesday with 68 per cent of the vote compared with Haley’s 27 per cent. Idaho Meanwhile in Idaho, the 77-year-old cruised to victory in the Republican caucuses. A report by Fox News said that 32 delegates in total are up for grabs in Idaho, all of which will go to any candidate winning more than 50 per cent of the vote statewide. Earlier, the state lawmakers planned to push the presidential primary from March to May but passed a bill that ended up cancelling the March primary and never rescheduled it to a later date. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the protesters, who gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC, said that the Biden administration should stop supplying military weapons to Israel. Speaking to Reuters, protester Kathy Boylan said, "We're dropping some food, and we're dropping the bombs, and the tanks and the bullets and everything else at the same time. That's what he's Biden got to do." US makes first airdrop in Gaza The US on Saturday carried out the first of what it said would be a series of humanitarian airdrops of food into Gaza. Reuters reported that three C-130 US military planes delivered more than 38,000 meals into the territory. The Jordanian military also took part in the operation. Palestinians posted videos on social media showing boxes of aid being dropped. An Israeli official in Washington said, "Israel welcomes the humanitarian airdrops by the US, which were discussed and coordinated with us." Tributes paid to US airman who self-immolated outside embassy Meanwhile, the protesters in Washington DC also paid tributes to US airman Aaron Bushnell, who died after self-immolating outside the embassy in protest of the Israeli offensive in Gaza. Bushnell, 52, a cyber defence operations specialist with the 531st Intelligence Support Squadron, died from injuries sustained in the incident. He was an active member of the US Air Force who saw this country’s complicity in genocide and left the world saying the words ‘Free, Free Palestine’. We now ask for a moment of silence in honour of our martyrs and Aaron,” an unidentified speaker told the news agency. (With inputs from agencies)
