Protesters took to the streets in several Brazilian cities on Saturday to demand the impeachment of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, whose popularity has fallen in recent weeks amid corruption scandals against the backdrop of the pandemic.

This week, news broke that Brazil's defence ministry told congressional leadership that next year's elections would not take place without amending the country's electronic voting system to include a paper trail of each vote.

Bolsonaro has suggested several times without evidence that the current system is prone to fraud, allegations that Brazil's government has denied.

Bolsonaro is facing reelection next year, in a race in which he is likely to face his political nemesis, former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Polls currently show Bolsonaro losing against Lula.

Saturday's protests were at least the second time this month that Brazilians have taken to the streets in several cities to oppose Bolsonaro.

"I'm here because it is time to react to the genocidal government that we have, that has taken over our country," said Marcos Kirst, a protester in Sao Paulo.

Over 500,000 Brazilians have died of COVID-19 under Bolsonaro's leadership, who has been widely criticised for dismissing the severity of the disease and opposing masks and social distancing measures.

Bolsonaro is now being investigated in the Senate, which is probing the possibility of corruption tied to the purchase of an Indian coronavirus vaccine.

In Sao Paulo's Paulista Avenue, the traditional location for political protests, over a thousand people were gathering as of 4 pm on Saturday.

Bolsonaro was in Brasilia, the capital, on Saturday and went out for a motorcycle ride while greeting supporters.

A statue of George Floyd that was defaced in Brooklyn has been cleaned and is headed for Manhattan's Union Square.
The artwork was unveiled on the Juneteenth holiday in a spot on Flatbush Avenue. Five days later on June 24, it was vandalised with black paint and marked with the logo of a white supremacist group.

But members of the group that installed the statue painstakingly cleaned it, and local residents and one of Floyd's brothers gathered around it this week to bid farewell ahead of its long-planned move to Union Square as part of an exhibition in September.

"I heard the news about the vandalism. I was so proud that I got word that Flatbush held it down. They really supported us, looked out for the statue, looked out for the spirit of my brother," Terrence Floyd said at the gathering.

He added to news reporters: "You try to stop us, but you can't stop us. And we still gonna continue, with love."
Andrew Cohen of Confront Art, the group behind the statue, said people spent hours cleaning off the paint with toothbrushes and hands.

"The only method that worked was really, really putting the elbow grease into it," he said. The statue is going back to a studio on Monday for further cleaning.

No arrests have been made in the vandalism.

In an attempt to counter threats from the Taliban in the Tajikistan and Afghanistan border areas, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Tajik counterpart Sherali Mirzo on Saturday discussed several joint measures to be taken, reported Russia’s TASS news agency.

On Friday, Russia pledged to help ally Tajikistan in building a new outpost on the border. Next month, these two countries are also going to hold drills.

Russian foreign ministry said, "The parties discussed the situation in the Tajik-Afghan border area and joint measures to neutralise threats related to the escalating situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan."

In the former Soviet republic, Tajikistan, Russia still operates a military base. Tajikistan's government has expressed concern over the deteriorating security conditions in Afghanistan.

According to Reuters report, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are going to hold joint military drills close to the Tajikistan and Afghanistan border next month.

To prevent possible threats, Russia has already sent military equipment to Tajikistan-Afghanistan border areas.

Earlier, Tajikistan held its largest-ever military exercise involving its entire army. The Central Asian country's President Emomali Rakhmon urged vigilance. The military exercise has come amid Taliban's offensive in Afghanistan to control territory as US-led international forces leave.

Since the US announced its withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban has been on the offensive. At present, they control large part of the country and have been able to encircle many of the main cities. The border crossing between Afghanistan and Tajikistan is now under Taliban's control.

In what could lead to the cancellation of cargo and passenger fights, the airport catering to the second largest metro area of Nevada state in the United States has been facing an acute shortage of jet fuel.

It can result in potential restriction of the flow of tourists and essential goods into the northern part of the state.

In a statement late on Saturday, the political leaders of the state pledged to minimise disruption at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. They also said that they will ensure the aerial fight against Western wildfires isn't hampered.

The passengers have been advised to check with their airline for any delays in order to avoid any kind of inconvenience.

The airport, which is the nearest passenger terminal to Lake Tahoe, also serves Reno, a popular gambling destination.

Gov Steve Sisolak, Sens Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, and US Rep Mark Amodei wrote, "To be clear, further failure to secure adequate fuel supplies is unacceptable."

Across the West region in the US, airport officials have been voicing concerns about jet fuel shortages. They have also raised concern of its effect on what is shaping up to be a very busy wildfire season.

The demand for the jet fuel declined sharply and supply chains atrophied during the coronavirus pandemic. As the economy picks up, they are yet to bounce back in the West.

Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority spokeswoman Stacey Sunday, said the Reno airport's shortage is caused by a confluence of factors, including a scarcity of tanker truck drivers and high demand from passenger airlines and firefighting aircraft.

Morning news brief: Afghan lawmakers voice alarm on air force as US withdrawal comes closer and more

Venezuela's armed forces said on Friday that a US military plane violated its airspace along the South American country's border with Colombia in what it said was a "flagrant provocation."

Venezuela, whose socialist government is under heavy sanctions from Washington, has on several occasions in recent years reported alleged airspace violations.

It said that on Thursday evening, a C-17 plane from the US Air Force flew over the Perija mountains in western Zulia state for three minutes.

"They are performing reconnaissance tasks on Venezuelan geophysical space, and thus we do not rule out other possible hostile actions that violate our sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Venezuelan armed forces said in a statement.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Washington accuses President Nicolas Maduro of corruption, human rights violations and rigging his 2018 re-election, and has pressured him to step down.
