In a tormenting tale, a mother and daughter duo were forced to spend around four months in Australian jail after authorities mistakenly identified tea as drugs. One little mix-up has cost huge agony to the victims.

Here goes their sordid tale. Vun Pui “Connie” Chong and her daughter, San Yan Melanie Lim, imported 25 kg of brown ginger tea into Australia this year. The duo had intended to sell it at a marked-up rate as the beverage is a well-known remedy for period pain in Malaysia, which is their home country. They had also thought of making a profit of about $90 AUD.

But the wrong identification of this package as amphetamine by Australian Border Force (ABF) officials, who had intercepted the tea packets at the international airport led to the demise of all hopes of the duo.

Not just this, heavily-armed police officers raided Chong and Lim’s home in south-west Sydney in January to arrest them. This all happened despite the fact that authorities were made aware of problems with the tests used to identify the substance in the following months.

Until May, Chong and Lim were not bailed and the charges were also not withdrawn until August 10 when New South Wales Police got its own forensic analysis done.

The duo have now sued for costs, which the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions has refused to pay while the case has also been adjourned till March.

In a striking revelation, Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday said that extremism was not rooted in madrasas, but schools and colleges in Pakistan.

Chaudhry, who was addressing a consultative conference on terrorism in Islamabad, said that the students of "ordinary schools and colleges" had been involved in incidents of extremism in Pakistan and not of madrasas.

Chaudhry added, "You closed their (school and college students') minds. If you cultivate a society where an opposing view is immediately declared kufr (heresy) ... how can you present an opposing view?"

"And if no opposing views are tolerated, how will you bring a soft change (in society)?" the minister asked.

In response to a Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s query for a $6.6 billion plan to combat world hunger, the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) director has finally responded.

Musk had earlier claimed that he would sell his stock in Tesla to fund a plan if the WFP can describe "exactly how" it would work.

Taking on the billionaire, the director has laid out a robust plan. UN food programme director David Beasley, who is also a former Republican governor of South Carolina, tweeted a link to a 1,000-word "executive summary" on Monday.

The document shows how the UN would deploy $6.6 billion worth of meals and vouchers to feed over 40 million people in 43 countries, who are "on the brink of famine" to avert a looming "catastrophe".

In the document, Beasley posted that the WFP proposes to dedicate $3.5 billion to buy and deliver food directly, $2 billion "for cash and food vouchers (including transaction fees) in places where markets can function," and spend another $700 million to manage new food programmes that are "adapted to the in-country" conditions and ensure "the assistance reaches the most vulnerable."

Morning news brief: US auctions oil drilling lease, rare lunar spectacle and more

The residents of New Zealand will be in for a treat on Friday night as they will get to witness an incredibly rare lunar spectacle, which has not been seen in their sky in more than 800 years.

Since 1212, the longest partial lunar eclipse will be visible in New Zealand for the first time. It will start at 8.20 pm NZT when the shadow of the Earth begins to move across moon’s face. It will be covered by almost 97% with shadow by 10 pm.

During that moment, the lunar surface will turn red briefly. Just before midnight, the eclipse will finish its three-and-a-half-hour journey.

Rob Davison, an astronomer, Auckland’s Stardome Observatory, said, “When you have a total lunar eclipse, it’s not uncommon to have the entirety of that lasting for three-and-a-half hours, sometimes a bit shorter, sometimes longer. But for a partial eclipse to last this long, it’s just very rare.”

“Most of the eclipse will be dominated by the shadow moving across the moon, with a brief period where it will appear as a blood micromoon in our night sky,” said Davison.

Overdoses rose in 46 states of the US. The CDC estimated that 100,306 people died from April 2020 to same month in 2021 with the help of data from death certificates. Around 78,056 deaths were reported the year prior to it.

Drug overdoses killed a record 100,000 in US during COVID-19 pandemic

After being stopped by police in South Carolina in July, a Black man was ordered to lie on the ground. When he did not do so quickly, because he has metal rods and pins in his leg and hip, an officer stomped on the back of his head.

The man, Clarence Gailyard, 58, will receive $650,000 in compensation from Orangeburg, South Carolina the city announced Wednesday.

Body camera footage from July 26 shows Gailyard being stopped by Officer David Lance Dukes. The officer points a gun at Gailyard, who is on his hands and knees.

In the video, Dukes, who was later fired, yells, “Get on the ground!” He then stomps on Gailyard, causing his forehead to hit the ground.

Gailyard sustained a head injury. He was stopped by the police that day after “an erroneous 911 call placed stating someone out there had a gun,” his lawyer, Justin Bamberg, said.

Gailyard, who has had rods and pins in his body since being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle a few years ago, was holding a piece of wood wrapped in duct tape that he used to keep stray dogs away when he went walking, Bamberg said.

In a statement Wednesday, the city said that in addition to an apology, Gailyard would receive the compensation paid by the city’s insurance carrier. City officials said that the city would also establish a citizens’ task force to “provide oversight and guidance with regard to interactions” between residents and the Orangeburg police.

Sidney Evering, Orangeburg city administrator, said in a statement that the “vast majority” of the city’s police officers “do their jobs with honor and ensure that the citizens they are entrusted to protect and serve are treated fairly and with respect.”

He added, “However, when an officer falls short of these expectations and conducts themselves in ways unbecoming to their department and the city, that officer must and will be held accountable. That’s exactly what we have done in this instance.”

Dukes was fired after an investigation into the encounter and was charged with first-degree assault and battery. His lawyer and the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday night.

At a news conference in August, Gailyard said he was still in pain. “Every time I look in the mirror and see the scar on my face, it is not OK,” Gailyard said.

In a statement to the city Wednesday, Bamberg said that Gailyard was “pleased to put this very troubling incident behind him.”

“We appreciate how quickly Orangeburg city leadership moved to make this right by Mr. Gailyard,” Bamberg said. “I’ve handled numerous cases involving police violence previously, and rarely have I seen a city swiftly accept responsibility and also work to ensure that this never happens to another person.”

Bamberg said he gave credit to Aqkwele Polidore, a sergeant who was at the scene in July, “who refused to cover for a co-worker.”

“This incident should give all good officers around the country a positive sign that it is OK to take a stand against police brutality in your agencies,” Bamberg said. “Amazing things can happen when dedicated law enforcement officers choose what’s right over what’s ‘blue.’ ”

Bamberg also credited the city of Orangeburg for “changing its police department for the betterment of both its own officers and the citizens it serves.”

“This is what progress looks like,” he said.
