The total number of infections reached 4,32,96,692 with 72,424 active cases and the death toll rose to 5,24,855 as per the figures updated by the Union Health Ministry. The 15 deaths include seven people in Kerala, three in Delhi, two in Maharashtra and one each in Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The Covid caseload increased by 4,366 in 24 hours. According to the ministry, the daily positivity rate was 2.89 per cent and the weekly positivity rate was 2.50 per cent. The total number of patients who have recovered from the illness has risen to 4,26,99,363. The state wide vaccination push has resulted in the administration of 196.14 crore Covid vaccine doses, reported by PTI.

The national capital, Delhi recorded 1,534 new cases and three deaths with a positivity rate of 7.72 per cent on Saturday (June 18). The state recorded its highest number of cases in nearly four months a day earlier with one death and an 8.18 per cent positivity rate.

Saturday's result means that the shop's employees, who have been voting since Wednesday, should form their own branch of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union, once the agency has certified the results.&nbsp;

IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr said he applauded the workers' "courage."

"They made a huge sacrifice for thousands of Apple employees across the nation who had all eyes on this election. I ask Apple CEO Tim Cook to respect the election results and fast-track a first contract for the dedicated IAM CORE Apple employees in Towson," he said in a statement.

"This victory shows the growing demand for unions at Apple stores and different industries across our nation." 
It was not the first time employees at an Apple store have tried to unionize, but it was the first attempt that resulted in a vote.&nbsp;

Apple's director of distribution and human resources, Deirdre O'Brien, visited the shop in May to address employees, and said, "I want to start out by saying it's your right to join a union, but it's equally your right not to join a union.”

"If you’re faced with that decision, I want to encourage you to consult a wide range of people and sources to understand what it could be like to work at Apple under a collective bargaining agreement," &nbsp;he added.

She said that the presence of an intermediary would complicate relations between Apple and its employees.&nbsp; 
Unions, on the decline for decades, have won several symbolic victories in the United States in recent months, with President Joe Biden voicing his support. &nbsp;

Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, commemorating the end of the legal enslavement of Black Americans, took place Saturday in Galveston, Texas, the Gulf Coast city where Juneteenth originated.

During Saturday’s event at the Ashton Villa, the former headquarters for the Confederate Army in Galveston, speakers praised the efforts of former State Representative Al Edwards, a Houston legislator who helped make Juneteenth a statewide holiday in 1980.

Douglas Matthews, the event’s master of ceremony and Galveston Juneteenth Celebration coordinator, laid out some history in his opening remarks.

“Freedom is a cherished word to all humanity – particularly to those in bondage. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued his promised Emancipation Proclamation. But it took 30 months for President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the enforcement thereof to reach the South. Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with 2,000 troops on June 18, 1865 – two and a half years later – to announce and enforce the freeing of Black slaves. And this was the birth of Juneteenth," Matthews said.

Alana Holloway Edwards, the daughter of the late State Rep. Edwards and a school principal, said promoting her father’s legacy is based on education and awareness of Juneteenth.&nbsp;

“My father, late and former State Representative Al Edwards, was majorly focused on makingJuneteenth not only a state holiday, but also a national holiday, and bringing awareness to the fact that Union Army General Gordon Granger came to Galveston to free the 250,000 slaves that were left still in Texas even two years after the Emancipation Proclamation,” Holloway Edwards said. “And so today, we celebrate here at Ashton Villa because that day is significant and everyone deserves to know the truth about the history that happened right here in Galveston in Texas.”

In June 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed and sent to President Joe Biden a bill making June 19, or "Juneteenth," a federal holiday. Biden signed the bill into law on June 17, 2021.

Commemorating end of legal slavery of Black Americans with Juneteenth

A new enterprise-grade Android spyware called 'Hermit' is being used by the governments via SMS messages to target high-profile people like business executives, human rights activists, journalists, academics and government officials according to cyber-security researchers, as reported by Indo Asian News Service.

The team at cyber-security company Lookout Threat Lab uncovered the 'surveillanceware' that was used by the government of Kazakhstan in April, four months after nationwide protests against government policies were violently suppressed. 
&nbsp; 
"Based on our analysis, the spyware, which we named 'Hermit' is likely developed by Italian spyware vendor RCS Lab and Tykelab Srl, a telecommunications solutions company we suspect to be operating as a front company, " the researchers said in a blog post. 
&nbsp; 
This isn't the first time Hermit has been deployed. Italian authorities used it in an anti-corruption operation in 2019. 
&nbsp; 
"We also found evidence suggesting that an unknown actor used it in northeastern Syria, a predominantly Kurdish region that has been the setting of numerous regional conflicts, " the team noted. 
&nbsp; 
RCS Lab, a known developer that has been active for over three decades, operates in the same market as Pegasus developer NSO Group Technologies and Gamma Group, which created FinFisher. RCS Lab has engaged with military and intelligence agencies in Pakistan, Chile, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Myanmar and Turkmenistan. 
&nbsp; 
Collectively branded as "lawful intercept" companies, they claim to only sell to customers with a legitimate use for surveillanceware, such as intelligence and law enforcement agencies. 
&nbsp; 
"In reality, such tools have often been abused under the guise of national security to spy on business executives, human rights activists, journalists, academics and government officials, " the researchers warned. 
&nbsp; 
Hermit is modular spyware that hides its malicious capabilities in packages downloaded after it's deployed. These modules, along with the permissions the core apps have, enable Hermit to exploit a rooted device, record&nbsp; 
audio and make and redirect phone calls, as well as collect data such as call logs, contacts, photos, device location and SMS messages.

"We theorise that the spyware is distributed via SMS messages pretending to come from a legitimate source. The malware samples analysed impersonated the applications of telecommunications companies or smartphone manufacturers, " said the Lookout team. 
&nbsp; 
The spyware has been used for surveillance of activists, journalists and political leaders from several nations around the world, including India. The Supreme Court-appointed technical committee last month informed the court that it would submit the Pegasus probe report soon. The committee informed the top court that 29 mobile devices have been examined. The Supreme Court gave more time to the technical committee to finalise and submit its report.

Android spyware ‘hermit’ now being used by governments

Four Moroccan&nbsp;women&nbsp;pressed charges against&nbsp;French&nbsp;insurance&nbsp;tycoon&nbsp;Jacques Bouthier on May 21.&nbsp;He is&nbsp;currently under arrest in Paris on charges of raping a minor, a rights group said on Friday.

Karima Salama, a lawyer from the&nbsp;Moroccan&nbsp;Association for the Rights of Victims (AMDV) said that "the women have accused Jacques Bouthier&nbsp;of various acts of people trafficking, sexual&nbsp;harassment&nbsp;and verbal and moral violence,&nbsp;between 2018 and this year".&nbsp;

"An enquiry has been opened and we have faith in the justice system", she added.

According to an AFP report, three of the&nbsp;alleged victims told journalists on Friday about their experiences, using sanitary masks and dark glasses to hide their identities and that they&nbsp;had been sacked after refusing to "give in to&nbsp;harassment&nbsp;and blackmail" over their employment by Bouthier and other&nbsp;French&nbsp;and&nbsp;Moroccan&nbsp;executives.

One even said that Bouthier had presented them to men working at the firm, telling them, "If you bring in contracts, there will be beautiful&nbsp;Moroccan&nbsp;girls".

Bouthier was arrested by Paris prosecutors after an investigation regarding the accusations&nbsp;of people trafficking and the rape of a minor.&nbsp;He is also being prosecuted for other charges against him.&nbsp;

'Marker of climate change': Europe swelters in record-breaking June heatwave

While publicly the World Health Organisation (WHO) maintains that ‘all hypotheses remain on the table’ about the origins of Covid, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO had recently confided to a senior European politician that the most likely explanation was a catastrophic accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, where infections first spread during late 2019, as reported by Daily Mail.

In his opening remark at the Member State Information Session on COVID-19 and other issues, Tedros said, “ It has now been two-and-a-half years since we first identified cases of this novel coronavirus. We do not yet have the answers as to where it came from or how it entered the human population.”

A team of 27 experts was set up by the WHO last year to produce a new global framework for studies into emerging pathogens with the potential of sparking epidemics or pandemics.

In its first preliminary report, the so-called Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) stressed that it had no conclusive findings on the origins of the virus behind the worst global pandemic in a century.

"There are key pieces of data that are not yet available for a complete understanding of how the Covid-19 pandemic began," they acknowledged in their report, stressing that a range of further studies were needed "to follow up on several gaps in our knowledge".

“All hypotheses must remain on the table until we have evidence that enables us to rule certain hypotheses in or out. The only way this scientific work can progress successfully is with full collaboration from all countries, including China, where the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 were reported,” Tedros added.

While publicly the World Health Organisation (WHO) maintains that ‘all hypotheses remain on the table’ about the origins of Covid, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO had recently confided to a senior European politician that the most likely explanation was a catastrophic accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, where infections first spread during late 2019, as reported by Daily Mail. In his opening remark at the Member State Information Session on COVID-19 and other issues, Tedros said, “ It has now been two-and-a-half years since we first identified cases of this novel coronavirus. We do not yet have the answers as to where it came from or how it entered the human population.” A team of 27 experts was set up by the WHO last year to produce a new global framework for studies into emerging pathogens with the potential of sparking epidemics or pandemics. In its first preliminary report, the so-called Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) stressed that it had no conclusive findings on the origins of the virus behind the worst global pandemic in a century. "There are key pieces of data that are not yet available for a complete understanding of how the Covid-19 pandemic began," they acknowledged in their report, stressing that a range of further studies were needed "to follow up on several gaps in our knowledge". “All hypotheses must remain on the table until we have evidence that enables us to rule certain hypotheses in or out. The only way this scientific work can progress successfully is with full collaboration from all countries, including China, where the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 were reported,” Tedros added. A man with restricted ability dies at the Gatwick airport in London while using an escalator inside the airport terminal without a helper. The man and his wife, both needed special assistance to disembark.

The airline said: “A number of our cabin crew provided medical assistance to a passenger at Gatwick airport while waiting for paramedics to arrive, however, the passenger sadly later passed away. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time.”

As reported by The Guardian, a Gatwick airport spokesperson said the incident occurred while airport staff were helping to disembark three passengers with restricted mobility (PRM), adding that staff shortages played no role in the incident.

The spokesperson said: “This is a sad and tragic incident and our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased.

“A member of Wilson James staff was waiting when the aircraft arrived and was in the process of disembarking the three PRM passengers when the incident occurred. Staff shortages were not a factor in this incident as has been claimed. It is normal for one staff member to disembark three passengers who require assistance by taking them one at a time the short distance to the waiting buggy,” he added.

A No 10 spokesperson said: “It’s obviously a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased in what is an incredibly sad time.”

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to reports of a person having suffered a fall and injury at Gatwick North Terminal at approximately 12.50 pm on Wednesday.”

“Despite the efforts of the ambulance service and wider first responders, an 82-year-old man sadly died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner,” he added.

A formal investigation is currently underway.
